The Happy Valley situation might bereaching a boiling point if allegationsthat the Department of Public Works

(DPW) will be handing out eviction ordersto families living there are true.There are 19 “official” shelters on the land,

housing 18 men, 15 women and 18 children.Some of the approximately 20 “unofficial”

shelters have no access to basic human

needs such as water and sanitation.At a meeting in August between the City

of Cape Town, the Community Police Forum(CPF) and DPW, it was agreed that it isDPW’s responsibility to remove current ille-gal land invaders.It is unclear at themomentwhere the fam-

ilies would be moved to (if they are indeedevicted) and who’s responsibility it wouldbe to find alternative accommodation.Other aspects DPW have committed to in-

clude erecting fencing aroundHappyValley,

the clearing of bush and overgrown vegeta-tion, the urgent erection of appropriate sig-nage, future regular maintenance of theland, and future provision of regular securi-ty interventions to prevent further land in-vasion.Happy Valley is situated off the R27 West

Coast Road near West Beach.According to Table View Neighbourhood

Watch and CPF Sector 1 chairperson BarrieJarrett, Happy Valley has been a growingconcern since 2005when families started liv-

ing on Erf 1117. The concern is not only forthe people living there, but also for the adja-cent home owners.“There have been a lot of incidents that

point to an increase in crime the closer youget to Happy Valley. Criminals hide in thedense vegetation and if the security compa-nies or the police find someone on the landthen they don’t know if they’re living thereor hiding there. Nearby home-owners areregularly targeted,” says Jarrett.

Dealers stop on theside of the road and deliver their goods tothem. This is becoming a massive problemas drug abuse leads to domestic violence andother social issues. Further tenancy scams has seen a womanassaulted in her flat by someone posing asa prospective lessee.A well-dressed man recently came to

view a room in the complainant’s Milner-ton Central flat before allegedly threaten-ing her with a knife before stealing numer-ous small items.Milnerton Crime Watch’s Craig Peder-

sen emphasised the importance of stayingabreast of current crime tendencies and be-ing prepared when renting out a propertyor looking to rent.“There was a case recently closer to Ta-

bleViewwhere aman rented a flat andpaidthree months rent in advance,” said Peder-sen.“During his stay he advertised the flat

and held several viewings. Deposits werepaid into his account and after the threemonths he cancelled his own payments forrent and escaped with thousands of randsin his name.”Milnerton police spokesperson W/O

Kidrogen drivers took to the streets in Ta-ble View, Melkbosstrand and Milnertonlast week to voice their discontent overemployment conditions.In the process they burned tyres, bloc-

ked IntegratedRapid Transport lanes, sto-ned a MyCiTi bus, and intimidated pas-sengers and colleagues.Police reportedly responded with rub-

ber bullets and tear gas.However, provincial police spokesper-

son Lt Col André Traut refused to verifythis.“The appropriatemeasures were imple-

mented to control the situation. I cannotreveal anything else in this regard,” hesaid.When asked if any injuries were repor-

ted to the police, he said he was not awareof any.The strike action severely impacted on

the T01 and T03 trunk routes between theCivic Centre station and Table View, DuNoon, Melkbosstrand, Atlantis and Cen-tury City, as well as the feeder services inTable View and Atlantis.The unprotected strike was apparently

due to dispute over wages.What began as a peaceful demonstrati-

on on Wednesday rapidly escalated about90 drivers disrupting MyCiTi services.The City of Cape Town condemned the

strike “in the strongest possible terms”,saying violence and intimidation will not

be tolerated.On Thursday city mayco member for

transport, Brett Herron, said various vio-lent incidents were reported.“At around 12:30 in Parklands Main Ro-

ad striking drivers assaulted a non-stri-king bus driver and forced passengers offthe MyCiTi bus. The driver managed toget awaywith the bus.Weare shockedandappalled by this behaviour. No form of vi-olence can be tolerated as a lawful or legi-timate form of protest no matter the rea-son.Bus services returned to normal on Fri-

day when all of the drivers reported forthe morning shift.

The City of Cape Town has declared aself-imposed deadline of 6 Novemberto clarify issues and clear up the mis-

conceptions surrounding Wolwerivier.This statement by John Taylor, chairper-

son of the Wolwerivier Action Group(WAG), came after a Democratic Alliancemeeting in Table View where Premier He-len Zille was guest speaker.

WAG sent an email to Zille before themeeting and raised various issues whichhave been reported by TygerBurger.

After the meeting, Taylor said it was evi-dent that Zille received the email and hadbeen briefed on Wolwerivier by the city.

Open dialogueShe nonetheless referred the matter to

the speaker, Dirk Smit.“Smit announced that the city will have

a detailed report ready on the future of Wol-werivier within seven working days. Thedeadline for this is 6 November,” says Tay-lor.

“We eagerly await this report and lookforward to further open dialogue and inte-raction with the city.”

In the email, Taylor said that if the Wol-werivier development goes ahead, the WAGis greatly concerned about the potentialproblems arising from the integration of sixdifferent communities into very small anddensely packed shelters.

“Given their dire circumstances, coupledwith the infiltration of drugs and alcohol,criminal activity, domestic violence andchild neglect is set to rise.”

One day after the meeting, mayco mem-ber for human settlements, SiyabulelaMamkeli, released a statement with the hea-ding “City’s Wolwerivier project to impro-ve living conditions of residents”.

“We are changing the lives of these bene-ficiaries for the better,” stated Mamkeli.

“When the development is completed,they will have services, space to expandtheir homes, and there will be communityfacilities and safe spaces for children toplay.”

The project, with a cost of approximatelyR35 million, will see the accommodation ofa maximum of 500 families.

The temporary relocation area near Wol-werivier (where Richwood residents havebeen moved) has resulted in numerous ob-jections from concerned parties.

The living conditions, such as the spora-

dically flooded land they are occupying, ha-ve been well documented in TygerBurger.

Better servicesThese conditions cast a curious light on

Mamkeli’s next statement.“They (Richmond residents who were re-

located) now have better access to basic ser-vices,” stated Mamkeli.

He goes on to say that these families wereissued with a relocation kit which includespoles, galvanised corrugated iron roofsheets, a door with a lockset or padlock, anda window, as well as a solar panel and lightkit with cellphone charger. They have alsobeen provided with chemical toilets andstandpipes.

The Wolwerivier development is appa-rently expected to start at the end of the ye-ar.

The Richwood families will only then re-ceive serviced sites with security of tenureand electricity.

“The units will have their own built-intoilet and shower with full waterborne ser-vices. The units will be built to a high stan-dard and specification and will be clad withcolorbond or chromadek which is far supe-rior to galvanised sheets,” concluded Mam-keli.

Moet Liza Goodwin, bekroonde wynma-ker van Meerendal-wyne, egter nie onder-skat nie. Al het sy so onlangs as net ’n jaargelede nog nie eens fiets gery nie, pak syhaar voorbereiding met fyn beplanningaan.

Meerendal het dié Epic Endurance-wynonlangs bekendgestel om die eerste proloogvan die Absa Cape Epic, wat in 2012 op Mee-rendal aangebied is, te gedenk. Slegs 600bottels is van dié Merlot-wyn gemaak.

Terwyl dié wyn reeds in die Franse eike-houtvate in die kelder lê en verouder het,het Liza, wat met haar gesin op Meerendalbly, in Januarie vanjaar op haar nuwe fietsgeklim en “sommer op die plaas” beginfietsry.

“’n Mens het nie altyd tyd vir ’n sportklubof gimnasium nie. Ons het mos die trailshier op die plaas,” verduidelik sy. Die plaashet drie roetes oor 4 km vir beginners,13 km-intermediêre roete en 17 km vir meerervare ryers.

Later het langer roetes gevolg – ondermeer 40 tot 80 km roetes om stamina op tebou, vertel sy. In die middae ná werk doensy steeds die roetes op die plaas.

Liza kry ook twee keer per week CadenceCycling-afrigting by ’n sentrum in Tyger-vallei, waar ’n hartmonitor aan haar gekop-pel word. “Dit leer my nie net hoe om teenbulte en afdraendes te trap en die pedaal tebeheer nie, maar versterk ook jou coremus-cles,” sê sy.

Dít doen sy twee ure per week reeds virdie afgelope vier maande. “Dis ongelooflikintens.”

Liza was op skool sportief en het vir die

Hoërskool Bellville aan atletiek en hokkiedeelgeneem. Sy het ook WP-kleure in juk-skei behaal, maar haar gunstelingsport wasbeslis hokkie, waarvoor sy ook aan die WP-proewe deelgeneem het.

Na skool het sy wingerd- en wynkundeaan Elsenburg studeer en het sy nie meeraan formele sport deelgeneem nie.

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department will be completing a zero-pressure test on the water supply feeding the water supply zone in Melkbosstrand onThursday 13 November 2014.

This process will result in the disruption of the water supply to the Melkbostrand area,covering Duynefontein, Van Riebeekstrand and Atlantic Beach Estate from 22:00 until 04:00the following morning.

Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure minimaldisruption to the water supply in the affected areas.

The water supply network across the City is divided into reticulation zones which are smallerand much more manageable sections of the large network for purposes of maintenanceand upgrades. This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Plan and willsignificantly reduce the occurrence of pipe bursts and the subsequent water losses.

Residents are advised to store water in clean sealed containers for domestic use during this period.

The City regrets any inconvenience caused.

“Superbikes, keep both wheels on the road,adventures bikes, keep to the road, HarleyDavidsons, keep up!” Those were the rulesfor the bike run that growled around Tyger-berg for cancer on 1 November.

The cancer awareness campaign, Snors fora Cause, was organised and hosted byHarleyDavidson dealerships across SouthAfrica onthe launch of Movember and R50 000 was do-nated to the national “More balls thanmost”men’s cancer and health initiative.

Hundreds of bikers in full regalia showedup at the Willowbridge centre on Saturdaymorning for theCapeTownrunandwhen theclock struck 10:00, a collective roar deafenedthe crowd who then filed quite orderly outon to Tygerberg Valley drive heading towardthe N7.

Although it was more about the ride thanthe destination, the circular route took themback to the N1, Durban Road and theWillow-bridge centre again, where bands and braaiswere ready to cater for the leather clad parti-cipants with something soothing for the earsand dry throats.

Led by traffic services, the Snors for a Cause bike run invited stares, smiles and waves frompassing motorists on the N1 on Saturday.

Clubs from all over the Western Cape were represented at the Snors for a Cause bike runaround the Tygerberg for cancer on Saturday.

Jannie Moolman is ’n wandelende ensi-klopedie as dit kom by dinge wat homna aan die hart lê. Soos sy moedertaal,

geskiedenis, digters – van hier en van ver,lewend en dood – en skry-wers. Skrywers wat ge-digte met behulp van mu-siek ingekleur het en nu-we lewe in soms vergetegedigte geblaas het.Dis ook die titel van sy

nuwe produksie, Digtersen Skrywers, wat weer inJanuarie by Die Boer op-gevoer word.Dat Jannie passievol is

oor dié nuwe projek, isverseker. In een asemnoem hy die name van ’nhele rits digters en kom-poniste en eindig danmet’n aanhaling van Henry Purcell, ’n Britsekomponis wat in die 17de eeu geleef het:“Soos digkuns die harmonie vanwoorde is,so is musiek dié van note. Musiek en dig-kuns is susterskunste wat hand-aan-handwandel. Apart kan hulle bloei, maar saamis hulle soos die karaktereienskappe vanhumor en skoonheid in een.”Hoewel meeste mense bekend is met die

wat hom so inspireer om gedigte te toonset.Hy het dit so mooi beskryf en gesê ‘dit voel

of Antjie Krog woorde uitsy mond gesteel het, of synet voor hom gelewe het’,”vertel Jannie.Hy praat met bewonde-

ring van die FAK-sang-bundel wat in 1937 vir dieeerste keer verskyn het.Getoonsette werke van

digters soos Leipoldt, Lan-genhoven, Visser en Keetkom in dié bundel voorwat, volgens die inleiding,ten doel gehad het “om diegevoel van samehorigheidonder Afrikaners te ver-sterk; juis daarom is sowat

How many of these shops arelegal? Has it ever been investi-gated?

I believe that there arebillions of Rands in taxeswhich go unpaid and couldhelp our economy.

foreign-owned shops across thecountry. It seems that theConsumer Protection Act,especially the right to returngoods, does not apply to them.

Consumers have the right toreturn unsafe or defectivegoods, and request a fullrefund for such goods –provided this is done within areasonable period.

When you take goods back tothese shops, they refuse torefund you.

Switzerlandand Israel, with the mostheavily, legally armed citizens,have the lowest armed crimerates in the world.

As someone who has savedtwo lives with a licensedfirearm and never shot anyone,I say: “Let the criminal go infear!”

The persons handling theseweapons are, by law, supposedto be competent people. Howmany security personnel are inpossession of a certificate ofcompetency? Who takes respon-sibility for the weapons?

It is said the weapons arelocked in a safe and the key isgiven to you. Is there a dupli-cate key? No form of receipt orform of registration is presentto prove the weapon has beenhanded in for safekeeping. Ifthe weapon is misplaced, whatproof have I got it was handedin?

Those enforcing these lawsshould get their act togetherbefore enforcing laws they haveno idea about.

Canal Walk is supposed tohave high tech security in

place, yet crime is rife. Whereis the sophisticated securityand what training do thesecurity personnel have?

Is it not law, that any personwho carries a weapon issupposed to be a registered ascompetent? If security person-nel at Canal Walk are onlyarmed with batons, whatchance do they stand against anarmed patron? When securitycompanies are employed tosafeguard patrons, what guaran-tee has the patron got that theyare safeguarded?

Much research and investiga-tion is to be done beforeinnocent, law-abiding, regis-tered firearm owners aretargeted.

John Hadley gaan met syrewolwer winkelsentrum toe.Hy is paraat en enige gewapen-de rower gaan les opsê. Hy stapby ’n winkel in en ’n rooftogvind plaas. Die rower rig syvuurwapen op John en hy pluksy rewolwer uit. Hy het ’nsertifikaat en lisensie wat sê hykan skiet. Die rower skietterug. Nie een van die twee isakkuraat nie en koeëls vlieg diewinkel vol. Die ander mensehardloop vir die deur. Dieopslagkoeëls tref mense.

Die rower word doodgeskieten John voel soos ’n held. Baiemense is gewond en hy wordvan moord aangekla. As Johnsy vuurwapen tuis gelos het ennet gedoen het wat die rowersbeveel het, sou daar geenbeseerdes of sterftes wees nie.

Hy sou ook nie in die sellegesit het nie. Ek verkies dat diemense hul vuurwapens by diehuis los en dat winkelsentrumsstrenger toegangsbeheer toepas.

The guitarist behind Afrikaansrock band, Zinkplaat, has beenquietly working on a side

project that’s beenpickingup steam.Basson Laubscher started Basson

Laubscher&TheViolent Free Peacein about 2004, while still playingwith Zinkplaat, as a way for him toplay some of the music he loved out-side of the band.“This project started very organi-

cally,” he says. Being a fan of blueshimself, The Violent Free Peacestarted out as a cover band and away to have fun.“It kind of grew into something

else.”Today the band, made up of Bas-

son on guitar and vocals, Beitel VanDerMerwe on bass and Jan Fyfer ondrums, plays what Basson describesas a good mix between blues, rock,folk and country.

Raw and loudAlthough the band released their debut-

EP, Shakedown, earlier this year, Bassonsays their sound is rawer and a lot louderthan what you’ll hear on the album.When they band first started, the line

up was constantly changing. Die HeuwelsFantasties’ Fred den Hartog even did astint with The Violent Free Peace and itwas he who came up with the band’sname.The band was enjoying a “beer drink-

ing/ rehearsal session” when Fred sug-gested the name “Die Wrede Vrede”, butbeing an English band, they decided to gowith a translated version.“It worked outwell because it’s an abso-

lute pun and it works in the context of theband,” Basson says of his three-piece.“Plus your name gets used big on postersbecause they have to write it all out”.Bassonwillmakehis second turnon the

Table Mountain Blues Summit stagewhen he performs with The Violent FreePeace in December.“It’s an amazing event and there should

be a lotmore every year.”ButBasson saysit’s interesting that he’s on the line up ashe sometimes tries to steer clear of the“blues” label.He says blues, especially in South Afri-

ca, has a bit of a cliched stigma attachedto it.

“People usually think of old greyguys sitting in a corner playing thesame 12 bar stuff over and over.”His music is definitely influenced

by blues though. As a child, Bassonlistened to punk and metal, prefer-ring not to listen towhat his dadwaslistening to, until he discovered hisfather’s vinyl collection at the age of14.“He had this vinyl of this crazy

dude with this big hat and pink cow-boy boots and a really beaten up gui-tar. I remember I put it on and fromthe first track, the virus set in.”The crazy dude was Stevie Ray

Vaughn and Basson was hooked onthe raw honesty of the blues.

Camphill Village West Coast, a communitynear Atlantis where intellectually disabledpeople live and work together, celebratedtheir 50th birthday recently with a WildWest Barn Dance.

Friends and family joined residents andco-workers dressed up in cowboy hats, plaidshirts and neckerchiefs.

Straw bales wrapped in red cloth madecomfortable seats outside the communitycentre and plenty of music created a relaxedand celebratory atmosphere.

There were speeches reflecting on 50 yearsof Camphill Village, followed by an auctionand a fund-raising raffle with great prizes upfor grabs, from a night at Cape Town’s Am-bassador Hotel, to boutique wine estate ham-pers, and a hamper of Camphill goodies fromthe cosmetics workshop, dairy and bakery.

Then the floor was cleared in the commu-nity centre for some spirited line dancing.

We are always striving to im-prove our service delivery, in particularto those who do not have access to workopportunities,” says mayco member forTransport, Brett Herron.

“However, we must fully comprehendthe demand for the service and knowwhere our residents with disabilities livebefore we can make any adjustments toimprove the current operating model.”

He urges people with disabilities tobook for an assessment before the dead-line of Sunday 30 November.

Appointments can be made by calling0800 600 895 during office hours.

The appointments will be scheduled be-tween 10:30 and 21:00 from Monday toSunday and the city will provide trans-port from the applicant’s home to Tyger-berg Hospital and back.

Those being assessed will need a certi-fied copy of their identity document,proof of address, proof of income and amedical report.

Applicants will be asked to complete atravel survey questionnaire, which willassist the transport department in deter-mining the demand for the service andunderstanding the travel needs and pat-terns of those with disabilities.

EFC: LOCAL FIGHTER RARING TO GET INTO THE RING AT GRANDWEST

No fear for title fight

Gideon Drotschie is itching to getback in the hexagon after a year’slay-off with a back injury, and

looks forward to defending his heavy-weight title against Norman Wessels onThursday night.

Drotschie, known as the “Jugger-naut”, last fought at EFC 25 in Novem-ber last year when he successfully de-fended his title against Fraser Opie.

According to head coach Rico Hat-tingh of REPS Fitness in Bellville, Nor-man “Chef” Wessels will be the toughestopponent in Drotschie’s short but everso successful professional career thusfar. “This will be our toughest fight yet,no doubt. But having said that, we arevery confident that Gideon will retainhis title. We thoroughly did our homework and we are prepared.

Raring to go“We know Norman’s strong points

and we know where to attack. The im-portant thing for us is to focus on ourown game. Training has been excep-tionally good and Gideon recoverednicely from a niggling back injury. Heis fit and raring to go,” said Hattingh.

Gideon is counting the days to fight

fessional fight at the end of August atEFC 33 in Durban, is brimming withconfidence. Michael also trains underHattingh.

“It feels good to have that first win asa professional in the bag. I will also faceRegis Muyambo at EFC 35. I am lookingforward to getting in a solid perform-ance in front of our local fans and keep-ing a clean record,” said Michael.

Michael lives and breathes MMA. “Heis one of the most dedicated and hardworking individuals in the sport. He isstill a rookie, but give him a chance, heis going places in the industry. He istough as nails, and his technique isright up there. I am very excited abouthis future,” said Hattingh.

The Table View Football Club women’steams had a splendid year, receivingthree top awards at the recent Tygerbergsenior league awards dinner.

Table View was the 2014 league winner,and won the Team of the Year trophy.

Ashley Kondowe was also announcedas the Player of the Year.

Table View held their own awards din-ner two weeks ago and Kondowe was thestar of the evening. She was awarded thePlayer of the Year in the Women’s TeamAward and the Club Senior Awards cate-

gory.She also walked away with the club’s

Golden Boot award for her 18 goals du-ring the season.

Robyn Windsor was the Players’ Playerof the Year, and Estelle Martin was crow-ned the Most Improved Player of the Ye-ar. Gary Heyburgh, who did a phenome-nal job as coach of the women’s first team,was awarded Coach of the Year.

Shenneca Cassidy, who captained thewomen’s side to victory, received theSports Woman of the Year award.

Following an exciting 2014 season, fiercecompetition marked the national finals ofthe Spur High School Mountain Bike Leaguethat was hosted at Bekker School in Maga-liesburg.

A record number of 355 riders represen-ting the cream of high school mountain bikeriders from more than 69 schools acrossSouth Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe whocompeted in the two-day event.

DF Malan, who formed part of the WesternCape team, came third in the interprovincialtournament. The 4.5km track at BekkerSchool proved more challenging than previ-ous seasons, boasting a lot of single trackstretches as well as tricky falls and climbsthat required both stamina and technicalskills from the riders. The lap-race formatof the event saw the various age categoriescomplete a specific number of laps ranging

from two laps for the sub-junior girls to a tes-ting five laps for the junior men.

The team from Menlopark High Schoolwas on top form and secured four podium po-sitions as well as logging a number of top tenpositions to secure both the girls and mixedteam national championship trophies, whileGrey College in Bloemfontein won the boysteam category.

The league was launched in 2009 as a jointinitiative between Spur and Amarider tocreate a fun racing environment for child-ren, and has also facilitated the building ofmountain bike tracks on school propertyand community grounds.

Earlier this year the league cemented itsposition as one of the leading sport develop-ment programmes in the country when itwas shortlisted as a finalist for the 2014 Dis-covery Sport Industry Awards.
