    CARAVAN GUTTED: FAMILY SAFE

    Home up in smoke

    ANDR BAKKES

After the fire consumed everything his family

owned, Thinus Campher (35) stood in the

smouldering ashes of devastation and ex-

    claimed: Praise the Lord!

TheOu Skip Resorts caravan, which has un-

til recently been the Campher familys home,

    burnt down early Saturday morning.

The family of five Thinus, Barbara (35),

Eliska (13), Mandr (12) and Beulah (9) were

housesitting a home of friends in Melkbos-

strand when the flames destroyed their lives.

Both Thinus and his wife have been looking

for work for months, so this is just another

    tragedy which has befallen them.

He does, however, see the positive in the situ-

ation. Since the fire started in the tent by the

caravan door, the possibility exists that his

family might otherwise have been killed.

That very evening Barbara wanted to go

back to the caravan, but Thinus convinced her

to stay at the house in Melkbosstrand.

One of themanagers at Ou Skip Resort, Ren

Steenkamp, says that the fire department in-

spector told her it could have been an electrical

    fault or even arson.

Thinus says he knows exactly who caused it:

I will stop asking why, why, why! It was an

evil attack. The devil caused it. Beyond that,

who is to blame? I cant be stuck asking this

question over and over or Iwill end up in a neg-

    ative pool of muck!

His traumatic experience will most likely

    live with him forever...

At 05:30 ourneighbour in the caravan resort

phoned me. She was hysterical. Immediately

when I heard that the caravan is on fire I start-

    ed praying, recounts Thinus.

He got into the car and raced over to the re-

sort, which was just three kilometres away.

As he approached the resort he could see

    heavy smoke hanging over it.

It was quite depressing knowing thats all

    your stuff burning!

I didnt stop praying... Lord! Help me! Help

    me!

When he arrived at the scene of shattered

dreams he was overwhelmed when he saw

    the flames.

I never knew flames could get that big...

And all this happened in the rain!

Within seconds the fire department ar-

rivedon the scene.Their efforts and the light

rain prevented the flames from spreading to

    other caravans.

Now there is nothing left but challenges.

I went to the site the next day and I tried

to salvage something in the rubble, but there

    was nothing...

The resort has offered the family alterna-

tive accommodation in the park, but Thinus

says that this would be too traumatic for the

    family.

Other caring people have since also come

to the familys aid by donating food and

    clothes.

The biggest seed of hope that filled Thi-

nuss heart with encouragement was when

a nine-year-old girl walked up to him and

gave him R20 in change all of it her own

    money.

To all those who have contributed I want

them to knowwe are very, very, very thank-

    ful, he says.

The family still needs all the help they can

get, but Thinus doesnt lose heart.

Wewill receive amiracle, he adds assur-

    edly.

God will protect us and I will not back

    down.

V He has vast experience in the IT business and Bar-

bara in financial administration, but despite sending

CVs out all over the country they have not found jobs

    No nonsense beats crime

    LEON STEENKAMP

    Leon du Preezs no-nonsense attitude

on the race track is proving to serve

him well in his efforts to fight crime

    in the Milnerton area.

Du Preez, owner of the Ford Corti-

na Centre in Brooklyn was fed up

with the crime and deterioration of

the area around his workplace and

    his home in Tygerhof.

Some 13 months ago he decided to

    establish the Sector 1Neighbourhood

    Watch.

There was a need for a neighbour-

hood watch in the area, which is sec-

tor 1 of the Milnerton police. I fi-

nanced it, had boards made and put

up all over. I personally patrolled eve-

ry evening and financed a patrolman

on a bicycle during the first four

    months, Du Preez says.

His drive to recruit members for

    the neighbourhood watch saw its

membership grow to 100 within this

    time.

You could see the difference in the

    crime situation, it was disappear-

    ing, he says.

This statement is supported by the

fact that this sector had the lowest

    crime occurrence for most months

from August 2011 to August this year

of all five the Milnerton policing sec-

    tors.

His commitment to this project is

    evident.

    The neighbourhood watch mem-

bers did training with Charl Viljoen

    fromthe citysNeighbourhoodWatch

Task Team and we did training in

    DNA analysis, he says.

He has also organised public anti-

drug campaigns and marches in the

    Brooklyn area, which included soc-

cer matches and feeding local chil-

    dren.

This could however not have been

possible without the support of my

community, the police and the busi-

nesses along Koeberg Road as well,

    he says.

    His successwith theSector 1Neigh-

bourhood Watch led to him being

elected as chairman of the Milnerton

    Community Police Forum (CPF) re-

    cently.

I havebeen racing for 10 years, but

I have now packed up racing to do

what I do now, to servemy communi-

ty, says Du Preez, who is known for

racing his red, white and blue Ford

Cortina V6 in the V8 class at the

    Kraaifontein Oval, with his number

    T22.

    His getting-things-done attitude

has already started to spread into

crime fighting initiatives in other ar-

eas. Last night I was at a subforum

    meeting in Summer Greens. Every-

one was just moaning and complain-

ing and only one guy volunteered to

get involved. I asked if I could take the

mic and started challenging people to

    sign up for the neighbourhoodwatch.

Wehad 19 volunteers putting up their

hands, he says with a grin.

One of his main focus points is to

    establish neighbourhood watches in

all the areas in Sector 1.

I want at least 10 members in each

area, so the community can see that

its working... My next project is

    Phoenix.

V He is urging everyone to get involved in

fighting crime. He can be contacted on

    084 296 2358 or cortinacentre@telkom-

    sa.net.

New chairman of the Milnerton Community Police Forum

Leon du Preez is committed to making the streets of

Brooklyn, Tygerhof and Rugby safer. Here are some of

weapons he and his neighbourhood watch team have

    confiscated off troublemakers.

    Abalone on brink of survival

The abalone (perlemoen) that was confiscated last Monday night.

Despite the concerted efforts of local police

and Sea Fisheries officials, assisted by CPF

    anti-poaching volunteers, the onslaught on

    the dwindling perlemoen resource inMelk-

    bosstrand continues unabated.

    Following an all-night operation last

Monday night, a huge haul of 1 273 perlem-

oen was recovered with a value of around

    R300 000.

A recent report highlights the prospect of

increased poaching and influence of crime

syndicates in Melkbosstrand as the re-

    source becomes scarcer.

    Alarmingly, abalone have become func-

tionally extinct from Hawston to Her-

manus, the Fisheries Department told par-

liamentarians last week. And, according to

a Cape Times report, in the region from

Gansbaai to Quoin Point, stocks are hover-

ing just above the point of collapse.

It is of great concern that the poachers

are being dropped in the middle of Melkbos

and pickedup againwith their bags of per-

lemoen it is only a matter of time before

a local resident is injured by these crimi-

    nals, remarked a CPF spokesperson.

    A permanent pro-active anti-poaching

operation is needed in Melkbosstrand to

prevent and deter poachers rather than act-

ing after the perlemoen has been stolen

from the sea. Without the necessary staff

    and infrastructure, poaching will continue

because perlemoen is a high value item that

can be readily traded for drugs and thus

help fuel the crime syndicates operating in

    the Western Cape, he said.

    Porky and Pooch, a

    strange love affair

I only have eyes for you. Pepper the great

special bond that transcends their differen-

    ces. PHOTO: LEON STEENKAMP

    LEON STEENKAMP

They spend their days traipsing the dusty

grounds of the scrapyard they call home,

but it is at night that love flourishes be-

tween the unlikely pairing of Pepper the

great Dane and Basil the potbelly pig.

Those two are in love. You have never

seen anything like it, says Leon du Preez,

owner of the Ford Cortina Centre in Brook-

lyn, Table View where these two animals

I used to have four other dogs here but

when Basil arrived I had to remove them.

If any of the other dogs came near him, Pep-

    per attacked them, Leon explains.

By day the exuberant and very loving

Pepper is confined to her kennel in the cor-

ner of the premises, as Basil scuffs and

snouts around the sea of car wrecks in the

    yard.

The two-year-old Basil was introduced to

Pepper when Leon adopted him about a

    year ago.

He was a pet of friends of ours, a Jewish

family. He grew up with six dogs and lived

on their verandah. When the daughter left

home, they didnt want him any more and

I brought him here, Leon says.

And since then the relationship between

the canine and the porker has blossomed.

Where other dogsmight have looked at Bas-

il and seen next Christmass lunch, Pepper

was infatuated by the new addition to her

    home.

They do everything together, they sleep

and eat together. I havenever seen apig and

dog like that, says Leons wife Nikky.

A pig at a scrapyard and automotive shop

is also a delightful surprise for Leons cus-

tomers. Basil is well-known tomy custom-

ers. One of the things they like doing is to

put a Ford cap on his head and then take

a photo. And he loves it, he says.

    ST Potgieter

    Gedagtes wanneer jy

    broos en onseker voel

    N

Mens se lewe is nie net een

gelyk lyn van emosie en gevoel

nie. Dit is soos die deinings in

die oseaan. Daar is tye wanneer dit goed

gaan en jy op die toppunt van n golf ry.

Daar is egter ook tye wanneer jy swart-

    gallig en broos voel.

Hoe maak n mens wanneer jy onseker

en bang is? Hier is n paar gedagtes vir

wanneer jy broos en onseker voel:

V Elke probleem het n einde. Daar

Nou moet jy egter

hulp kry, planne maak en fokus op

konkrete stappe om jou probleme aan te

    spreek. Positiewe energie word vrygestel

wanneer jy jou fokus wegskuif van jou

    mistroostige omstandighede.

V Leef gesond. n Mens neig soms om

midde-in n krisis nie jou gesondheid op

te pas nie. Jou gesondheid is belangrik

om jou deur die storms te dra.

V Leef eenvoudig. Soms maak ons die

lewe te ingewikkeld en het ons meer

stiltes en eenvoudige dinge in die lewe

nodig. Vind dus in moeilike tye weer die

    basiese lewensbeginsels van jou menslike

bestaan en sny die fieterjasies uit.

V Verander jou lewe. Moenie wag om

eendag, wanneer jou ellende oor en verby

is, veranderinge in jou lewe te maak nie.

Doen dit reeds in die slegte tye. Wanneer

    jy ongehoorsaam is, word gehoorsaam.

Wanneer jy op skuld lewe, hou op skuld

    maak. Wanneer jy humeurige geaardheid

    het, word bedagsaam.

V Kry berading. Moenie skaam wees

om hulp te soek nie. Berading help jou

om van angstigheid en vrese verligting te

    kry en oplossings te vind.

V Leef dankbaarheid. S weer dankie

vir die klein dingetjies in die lewe.

Moenie so puntenerig en krities oor alles

wees nie. S dankie vir die mense om jou,

en s dankie vir die goeie Vader wat vir

jou sorg al voel jy eensaam en verlore in

    hierdie groot, wye wreld.

V Weet God is in beheer. Soms voel

dit of alles hand uitruk met al die onstui-

mige gebeure in ons land en ook in jou

    persoonlike lewe.

Ons hoop l uiteindelik tog daarin dat

ons sal weet God is in beheer, ondanks al

    die onseker en brose tye.

    FREE-RANGE THINKING

    Tony Robinson

    End is nigh for dirty

    little petrol engines

    I

t may come as something of a

surprise to learn that even the

worst Eskom power station is twice

as efficient as your car. Even if you

    drive a Porsche!

It works like this. Both the power

station and your car burn fuel and

use the resulting heat to create

    mechanical energy. The efficiency is

    measured by comparing the heat

    actually converted into mechanical

energy with the waste heat, which in

the case of Eskom, is returned to the

atmosphere via its smoke stacks and

    giant cooling towers.

When I briefly studied heat engines

a long time ago, the thermal efficiency

of a petrol engine was given as 14%,

diesels were 18% and steam engines

    25%. Petrol engines were preferred

because they were easy to start and

    more versatile.

    There have been many improve-

ments over the years. Metal alloys are

    lighter, lubrication is better, ignition

    systems, valve gear and engine

    management have been transformed

and the result is engines that now run

at a thermal efficiency of about 20%.

Thats in cruise mode. In traffic, the

overall efficiency drops to about 15%.

This means 15% of the heat generat-

ed by burning the petrol becomes

    useful energy while 85% becomes

waste heat to be dumped into the

atmosphere. The really dirty stuff goes

out through the exhaust and is so

poisonous that the fumes have become

a preferred option for unhappy people

    who want to commit suicide.

If the petrol engine were invented

    today its inefficiency and lethal

    emissions would ensure its immediate

    banning.

The real miracle of the motor car is

    that their complicated motors with

dozens of moving, wearing parts have

become so reliable. More reliable than

    Eskom!

One can understand why the oil

    companies were prepared to tolerate

machines with a 15% efficiency rating

but whats your excuse? How did we

all get suckered into accepting what

    Churchill called the infernal combus-

    tion engine when, better cleaner

motors have been around for a

    century?

Yes, the future is electric for we

now have the batteries to power cars

that can outperform the old models

with their suck, squeeze, bang blow

    motors.

    Unfortunately the petrolheads and

the motor industry hate the clean,

silent electric cars that never need oil

changes, new spark plugs or tune-ups.

On the other hand, Tesla Motors is

building the first pure electric car

and, despite the high price, they cant

    make them fast enough.

If you dont believe me have a look

    at www.teslamotors.com and you will

    see the future.

    Joggers, cyclists beware

    The Melkbosstrand Neighbourhood Watch

has warned joggers and cyclists to be

    alert while out exercising.

This follows after a cyclist was attacked

by the occupants of a passing vehicle on

Otto du Plessis Drive near Derdesteen

    recently.

The occupants of the vehicle tried to

take the cyclists backpack, but he mana-

    ged to escape.

    Eric Miles go green

At the launch of the solar photovoltaic project at Eric Miles Cheshire Home on Monday were

Cape branch manager/national treasurer), Karen van der Wath (project manager), Brian Jones

Riet (CCT Electricity), (front) Shaun Sparg (webmaster/resident). PHOTO: CARINA ROUX

    Milnertons EricMiles Cheshire Homewill

be cutting their electricity bill by approxi-

mately 40% when it goes green this Feb-

    ruary.

    The localhome fordisabled residentswill

not only be harvesting the advantages of

green energy, but it will also be instrumen-

tal in an experiment which will illustrate

the economic sense of pursuing this envi-

    ronmentally friendly option.

The home has received grant funding

    from theEnergyandEnvironmentPartner-

ship Programme (EEP) for the project.

As a result, the home will install a 45-

50kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system on

    its predominantly north-facing roof, which

will ultimately save them between R7 000

    and R8 000 a month.

The home currently provides care for 45

    quadriplegic and paraplegic residents of

mixed race and spends an average of

    R20 000 a month on electricity.

Manager Alet Bosman says the project is

part of an ongoing drive by them to reduce

the amount of energy consumed as well as

    reducingoperating costs.Other energy sav-

ings projects include the installation of

heat pumps, which reduce energy con-

sumption by up to 35% and taking part in

    Eskoms compact fluorescent lamp (CFL)

    exchange programme.

Project developer, Karen van der Wath,

elaborates: It is envisaged to up-scale and

install solar PV at all 18 Cheshire Homes

situated throughout South Africa by sourc-

ing donor funding from the corporate sec-

tor in exchange for carbon emission sav-

    ings.

The installationwill also serve as a show-

case for interested parties to see a real life

project before they decide to jump on the

    green bandwagon.

    Die vierde Melkbos-Kersliggiefees is van-

jaar groter as voorheen en Melkbosstrand-

Die fees bied vanjaar n groter as voorheen

skaatsplankbaan, wat om 11:00 open en 18:00

sluit. Die Kersboomliggies word om 18:30

aangeskakel. Die fees duur tot 22:00.

Feesgangers kry die geleentheid om die

    opwindende skaatsplanksport en landroei

aan te durf. Hierdie snelgroeiende sport-

soort is amper soos sneeuski op wiele.

Bekende sterre wat by die fees n draai

gaan maak, is die alombekende SK van

7deLaan-faam, Luna Paige, Sussi Susters en

    Nadine Black.

Kersvader maak die middag n draai by

    Bellville: Vanjaar gaan

    ek saam met my krel

    Sedgefield toe. Ons

    was laasjaar nie saam

    nie, toe besluit ons

    om vanjaar Kersfees

    saam deur te bring.

    Ek sal bietjie dus weg

    van die huis af wees.

    FOTOS: TAMSYN

    COERECIUS

    Deidr Stassen van

    Plattekloof: Ons sal

    weer saam kuier by

    my suster se huis in

    Panorama. Ek en my

    man het albei nog

    ons ouers en dis

    belangrik om Kersdag

    saam met hulle te

    deel. Ons trek

    gewoonlik name en

    dan koop ons

    geskenke vir die naam

    wat getrek was.

    Sylvester Booysen van

    Ravensmead: Ons hou

    elke jaar n groot ete.

    Dis tradisie. Ons trek

    gewoonlik iemand se

    naam, dan koop jy vir

    daardie persoon n

    geskenk. Ons hele

    familie kuier saam.

    Dis belangrik vir ons,

    want jy kry nie baie

    tyd gedurende die

    jaar nie.

    Eben de Bod

    van Kraaifontein:

    Elke Oukers-

    aand maak ons

    geskenke oop

    voor die

    Kersboom. Dis

    meer vir die

    kinders en dis

    tradisie. Ons is

    ook so grootge-

    maak.

    Laetitia Indombe van

    Parow: Ek sal hierdie

    jaar Johannesburg

    toe gaan en my

    Kersfees saam met

    vriende deurbring.

    Ons braai gewoonlik

    en ek koop net

    geskenke vir my

    naaste vriende. My

    familie is in die

    Kongo, so my

    vriende in Johannes-

    burg is soos my

    familie.

    Freddie Panter van

    Tableview: Ons

    vriende en familie

    kom hierdie jaar

    van Johannesburg,

    so ons gaan vir

    hulle bietjie die

    Kaap wys. Ons sal

    beslis Tafelberg toe.

    Op Oukersaand het

    ons gewoonlik n

    familie-ete by die

    huis en dan sing

    ons Kersliedjies by

    die Kersboom.

    Zo Jooste van

    Bellville: Ek gaan

    Kersfees by my

    ouma en oupa se

    huis wees. Ons eet

    elke Kersfees daar.

    Ek wil hierdie jaar

    n fiets vir Kersfees

    h.

    Jackson Steli

    van Kuilsriver:

    Ons gaan nou al

    vir die afgelope

    drie jaar Strand

    toe op Kersdag.

    By die huis eet

    ons net en dan

    is dit verby. As

    ons Strand toe

    gaan, is daar

    darem iets wat

    die hele familie

    saam doen en

    geniet.

    Asiphe Nombewu

    van Delft: Ons gaan

    elke Kersdag kerk

    toe en dan kuier

    ons hele familie

    saam. Die geskenke

    is nie vir ons

    belangrik nie om

    tyd saam deur te

    bring is belangriker.

    Gewoonlik gaan

    kuier ons in die

    Oos-Kaap by

    familie, maar

    vanjaar kom hulle

    na ons in Kaapstad

    Jonathan Laban van

    Ravensmead: Ons

    kuier gewoonlik op

    Oudtshoorn op

    Kersdag, want ons

    het familie daar. Ek

    werk die hele dag op

    Kersdag en sal graag

    dit saam met my

    familie wou spandeer.

    Dit sal n gewone dag

    vir my wees.

    Beste uit jou

    geweste in n

    nuwe baadjie

jare. In die algemeen het ons probeer om

die uitleg minder swaar te maak. Ons

    het moderne, ligter lettertipes gekies,

van onnodige lyne ontslae geraak en

meer orde probeer skep. Dit behoort die

koerant in die algemeen ook meer

    leesbaar te maak.

Ons het vir weke geswoeg om die

template te finaliseer en te oefen sodat

alles op spertyd glad sal verloop. En hier

is ons nuwe baba n ons trots, nou in jou

hande die ene oor wie dit eintlik gaan.

    Geniet hierdie TygberBurger vir sy

    mooi voorkoms, asook soos gewoonlik

vir die jongste oor wat in jou omgewing

ges en gedoen word, en wie betrokke is.

Ja, dis een ding wat nie verander nie:

The article advising that community based

    organisations (CBOs) and non-governmental

organisations (NGOs) are in jeopardy of black

    economic empowerment measures entitled

NGOs under BEE threat has prompted me to

respond by placing on record my views and

sentiments. The proposal by government disqual-

ifying funding to NGOs if their programmes

dont benefit all-out black recipients is nothing

    other than discrimination and narrow-minded-

    ness.

The fact of the matter is that many NGOs and

CBOs are performing wonders under very

difficult circumstances. What we need is commu-

nity organisations to provide wholesome guid-

ance and development, not more legislation and

regulation in order to provide a basis where

individuals can develop and apply their own

skills and talents. I am proud to be associated

with the many NGOs working throughout the

areas under my jurisdiction; it can be said with

pride that these bodies are always at the fore-

front of community service; bringing about

social development and relief to the underprivi-

leged; comfort to the afflicted; and assisting and

caring for senior citizens. They perform these

deeds regardless of the recipients skin colour or

    creed.

The way the government divides South

Africans is by race. Black Economic Empower-

ment (BEE) has been abused to help an elite

few. In contrast to this, in an open opportunity

society, all South Africans are free, secure, and

equal before the law; and in which every person

has the means to improve the quality of his life

    and pursue his own aspirations.

It is true that each of us needs the support of

family, and the support of community and,

yes, the support of the state to make it.

    word.

As I serve on the traffic portfolio of the Table

View Ratepayers Association and am therefore

radio-linked within the Table View Neighbour-

hood Watch, I regularly hear about the most

horrific accidents, in residential areas or the

    surrounding roads in Table View.

Seeing people die and the horrific injuries

they succumb to, is unbelievable. People have no

entitlement to drive 60 km/h in our residential

    areas.

There are residents, who want to get out of

their driveways, animals in the roads, children

playing and cars parked. We have no right to

drive 60 km/h in these areas.

I urge you to slow down if you are in situa-

tions like these. Give right of way in traffic

    circles.

circle does not mean the one who drives the

fastest has the right of way, it means slow down.

It is also not necessary to speed down Wood

Drive, Janssens Road, Raats Drive or North

Road as though it is a speedtrack, it is a residen-

tial area. Just because you live in either West

Beach or Parklands, does not mean you may use

the Table View feeder routes as a speedtrack.

Speeding in Sandown Road and Parklands

Main Road is an equally big problem. How many

more horrific accidents must we see there?

Access to the Beach road area is allowed for

everyone. This does not mean that when you are

on Otto du Plessis road, you should not slow

down and give other motorists a chance to enter.

I appeal to the motorists keep in mind that

there is no entitlement on the roads in our area.

The official launch of the Copperheads K-9

Unit took place on Thursday 22 November,

    where a short introductory demonstration

as to how the sniffer dogs will operate in the

    field, was presented.

Four members of the MTU (Cape Towns

Metals Theft Unit) were recently sent on a

four-week dog handlers course, and as a re-

sult are now fully qualified dog handlers.

The two dogs that will be assisting the of-

    ficerswere trained throughavariety of exer-

cises that aim to simulate conditions they

will be experiencing in the field and will in-

    still a sense of obedience.

Thehandlerswere trained in terms of how

to bond with the dog, how to handle the dog

off the leash, and how to issue commands to

    the dogs.

To offer an idea of just how effective they

can be, a humans sense of smell relies on

an area of membrane the size of a postage

stamp in a dog this is the size of anA4 sheet

    of paper.

This keen sense of smell will allow the

dogs to find stolen copper evenwith the in-

    troduction of disguising odours.

The process, which was initiated by the

head of the unit, Assistant Chief Neil

Arendse, was meant to aid the officers in

    detecting stolen copper and aluminiumca-

    ble.

    This event shouldbe seenas anhistoric

moment for the citys lawenforcement ser-

vices, said JP Smith, mayoral committee

    member for safety and security.

Specialist dogs work in a variety of law

    enforcement and military functions, de-

tecting a wide range of specific scents that

they have been trained to recognise, he

    continued.

Detecting the presence of copper is just

one more field in which they excel. With

the aid of these new members, the Metals

Theft Unit will now be able to search for

copper in a variety of concealed locati-

    ons, he said.

So the word is out for copper thieves: Bewa-

re, the noose just got tighter. The next nose

that sticks itself into your (illegal) business

might be a cold and wet one.

V To report copper theft to Eskom, phone

    0800 112 722 or phone Telkom on 0800 124 000.

Play your part in 16 Days campaign

If you feel strongly about protecting the wo-

men and the children of South Africa, then

    now is the time.

From this week, South Africans will be

called to join the 16 Days of No Violence

    Against Women and Children campaign.

This campaign runs for 10 days until 10 De-

    cember.

A group of celebrities is supporting this

campaign by donating their time to Matla A

Bana, a voice against child abuse, for a fun

    online fundraising project.

The aim of the campaign is tomake people

aware of the reality of abuse against women

    and children.

Matla A Bana, the charity benefiting from

this auction, was started by ex-hostage Mo-

nique Strydom who is also on auction du-

    ring the event.

    Monique says thepublic cannow takepart

in the bidorbuy Celebrities for Charities

auction, where they cannot only win lunch

dates with the celebrities, but also fantastic

    trips and experiences.

People can evenbid on aCapeSidecar tour

with Egoli star, Ivan Zimmerman including

    lunch.

The charity currently helps more than

14 000 children a year in the Western Cape

    and Gauteng, who report abuse.

There are too many people who know

that a child is being abused and do nothing

about it. They are just as guilty as the perpe-

    trator, says Monique.

The harsh reality is that the new Sexual

Offences and Child Protection Laws clearly

state a person can be charged if he or she

knew about abuse and did not report it.

It is a known fact that girls between eight

and 12 are themost vulnerable when it come

to sexual assault and rape, she said.

In 80% of the cases the perpetrator is

known to them. In many cases it is a father,

a brother or the mothers boyfriend.

If this kind of abuse takes place where a

child should be safe and protected at home

how do we stop this from happening?

    asked Monique.

She says members of the public should

start taking responsibility. The law places

    an enormous responsibility on institutions

    like schools and churches.

Often a teacher is the only confidante of

a child and many schools do not know how

    to deal with a disclosure.

Schools and churches need a Child Pro-

tection Policy, not only to help them report

abuse, but also to protect them against beco-

ming targets of abusers which can happen

even if people think it is impossible, Moni-

    que warned.

It is a known fact that paedophiles will

use the supposedly safe environment of a

    church to source victims.

In celebration of the 16 Days campaign

Matla A Bana will be opening seven child-

friendly facilities and rooms in the two pro-

    vinces.

These facilities are based at the SAPS Fa-

mily Violence, Child Protection and Sexual

    Offences units and hospitals.

This year there is a very strong focus on

not only empowering children but also wo-

men. Together with Radio Tygerberg, Matla

A Bana has produced 16 short radio pro-

grammes to educate and equip both women

and children to protect themselves. Thiswill

    be broadcast during the campaign.

You can support this campaign by repor-

    ting abuse, byhelping an abusedwomanand

    by educating others.

So if you are keen to hang out with a cele-

brity anddo somethinggreat then start bid-

ding on the Celebrities for Charities on

    www.bidorbuy.co.za.

Opportunities created by old dance gear

    LEON STEENKAMP

A local project to collect second-hand

dance clothes is aimed at promoting

the arts among those less fortunate.

Cynthia Bevan, owner of the Dance

    Euphoria store, which specialises in

all types of dance clothes, co-ordinates

    this project.

There are so many dance clothes

and shoes lying around in cupboards,

that children have grown out of. We

asked all schools to get involved in col-

    lecting second-hand clothes for the

dance charity of their choice, Cynthia

    explained.

    Two local schools, ParklandsCollege

    and Elkanah House, greatly supported

    the initiative.

Last Wednesday the first batch of

ballet and tap shoes and a variety of

    dance clothes anduniformswerehand-

ed over to Dance for All and the Rain-

bow School of Dance in Lamberts Bay.

Dance forAll is based inAthlone and

has for the last 21 years taught dancing

to children in areas like Langa, Gugu-

    lethu and Khayelitsha.

    These children have nothing. So

everything will be used and appreciat-

ed.We especially struggle to find shoes

and clothing for the boys, a grateful

Philip Boyd, CEO of African Dance

said. Both these dance schools are

    teaching children who may otherwise

be overlooked as dancers and left to

    take other avenues of recreation

frowned upon by society. The children

from these studios are doing some

amazing shows and have developed a

love for dance and pride in them-

selves, Cynthia added. She said the collec-

tion drive of second-hand dancing clothes

will run all through the year.

Ourmission is to extend this programme

to hopefully get anyone in the community

to come to 4 Sunningdale Drive, Sunningale

to drop off any dance attire that their chil-

dren have grown out of or are no longer us-

    ing.

She thanked the two dance teachers Meg-

an Davies (Elkanah) and Sylvia Stander

(Parklands College) for their support of the

    project.

V Any donations can be dropped off at the Dance

Euphoria shop in Sunningdale Drive or you can con-

    tact Cynthia on 082 780 5973 or 021 557 6887.

One hand cannot clap on its own,

it needs the other hand to make a

    clap. Nowhere was this saying

    more true than Saturday when

about 80 volunteers gathered at De

Vrije Zee Primary School in Good-

wood to make meal packs that will

go to the hungry all over the prov-

    ince.

In the spirit of International Vol-

    unteers Day, the peoplewho turned

up to make a difference left at the

end of the marathon session as he-

    roes and heroines.

If two hands are required to clap

then the sound of them working to-

gether would be akin to rapturous

    applause.

    Various Lions clubs and Stop

    Hunger Now collaborated when

more than 17 000 meal packs were

    prepared by volunteers from all

    over Cape Town.

Many a hand made light work of

    this mammoth task.

    Somehandswere young and inno-

cent, some were old and wise and

    others belonged to Kraaifonteins

Miss SouthAfrica Top 16 finalist, Si-

    mone de Kock.

De Kock was, of course, just one

of many who volunteered that day,

so its fair to say that every single

    hand contributed to a beautiful

    cause.

As the African Maasai tribe says:

We are all what we are because of

    those around us.

    Merriman Lions president, Clive

Fox, sums it up: The projectwas in-

itiated by us to celebrate Interna-

    tional Volunteers Day, which falls

on 5 December. The goal is to pack

17 500 meals. Today we have Lions,

Leos, a group from the University of

the Western Cape called the Golden

Key and members of the public

    here.

    While Fox elaborates on proceed-

ings, Michael Jacksons We are the

World songplays in the school hall.

The songs opening lyrics ties in

    with the uplifting atmosphere

There comes a time when we heed

a certain call, when the world must

come together as one. There are peo-

ple dying and its time to lend ahand

to life the greatest gift of all!

    The Lion clubs, Merriman, De

    Grendel, Durbanville, Tygerhills

and Table View, funded the whole

    process.

Ten percent of the meals will go

to Stop Hunger Now and the rest

will go back to the Lions for distri-

    bution amongst local beneficiaries.

    The dehydrated food pack con-

    tains enough essential nutrients to

sustain one adult for one day with

onemeal. It consists of a veggiemix,

rice, soya and a little packet of 21 nu-

trients that gives the meal flavour

    and vitamins.

In South Africa, 250 children are killed on

the road each year because someone didnt

    buckle themupcausing theWesternCape

    government to consider various legisla-

    tion in this regard.

According to statistics, more than twice

as many children die as pedestrians. Fur-

thermore road crashes in South Africa

claim the highest mortality in the age

group one to 18 years worldwide.

But this could be prevented by parents

who opt to buckle their children up.

To this end, Childsafe, and the manage-

    ment of RedCross ChildrensHospital, last

week launched their Buckle-up or youll

be back campaign in an effort to raise

awareness as to the dangers of not buck-

    ling-up when driving, particularly when

driving with children in the vehicle.

Children are among the most vulnera-

ble on our roads, both as passengers and

    pedestrians. Through our SafelyHome ini-

tiative, we will be gearing up our enforce-

ment and educational efforts during the

upcoming festive season to reduce the car-

nage on our roads. Last year, 139 liveswere

lost on the provinces roads during the fes-

tive season, with pedestrians and passen-

gers making up the bulk of that number,

says Minister of Transport in the Western

    Cape Robin Carlisle.

Appropriate restraints are a crucial ele-

ment in child road safety. The national sta-

tistics in terms of restraints, particularly

for children, are shocking. In 2010, it was

    observed that 92 %of back-seat passengers

    (including children) were not wearing

    seat-belts.

According to Carlisle, the province is

currently looking into child restraints reg-

    ulations thatwouldban shared seatingand

mandate the use of seatbelts, rear and for-

ward facing child seats, and booster seats,

as appropriate to age with harsh penalties

    for non-compliance.

fence for reckless behaviour with children

in the vehicle, such as speeding, drunk
