    CONGESTION PROBLEM: ROBOTS NOTWORKING

    Traffic light vandalised

    LEON STEENKAMP

    T

he traffic congestion problem in Table

    Viewhas recently beenworsenedby re-

    peated incidents of vandalism.

Over the past few weeks, the City of Cape

Town has received reports from concerned

    residents regarding increased traffic con-

gestion in the Table View area.

The spike in traffic congestion in the Ta-

ble View area was caused by the non-func-

tioning traffic signals at the intersection of

Plattekloof Road and the N7, mayoral com-

mittee member for transport, roads and

stormwater, Brett Herron, said last week.

    These signalsmalfunctioned due to cable

theft and vandalism that necessitated cable

replacement as well as equipment repair

and replacement, that was completed last

    week, he said last Tuesday.

Herron added that vandalism continues to

be a significant problem in Cape Town.

In this particular instance, there was

heightened traffic congestion in the areadue

to the vandalised traffic lights. In addition

to this, funds that could be used for, among

other things, newly installed traffic lights

and traffic calming measures, have to be di-

verted to repairs of vandalised infrastruc-

    ture.

    Cable cut

Herron on Monday again expressed his

disgust as these traffic lights were vandal-

    ised for a second time.

The perpetrators cut both the link and

the loop cables of the traffic signal at this in-

tersection, including the new cable that re-

cently had to be replaced due to theft, Her-

    ron said.

The damagewill cost the city an estimated

    R50 000 to repair.

I am extremely disappointed that our in-

frastructure is being vandalised. It is disre-

spectful and disgraceful that people wilfully

damage city property in this manner. I

would like to appeal to all Capetonians to re-

port these incidents should they witness

    them, he said.

I would like to urge motorists to avoid

this intersection if possible, anduse analter-

native route if they are able to, while repairs

are being made. Traffic in this area is al-

ready under strain. The vandalism of the

traffic signal has exacerbated the situation,

    he added.

It is estimated that the work to repair the

    Plattekloof/N7 intersection will be complet-

    ed before the weekend.

A further measure to help alleviate con-

gestion, is the construction of the Sandown

    Road/N7 link.

Director of Aska Property Group, Tony

Clark said progress on this project is run-

    ning smoothly.

    Bridge

The construction of the bridge over the

railway is currently three weeks ahead of

    schedule, Clarke said on Monday.

We are however entering the winter

months shortly and although we have al-

lowed for days of noworkdue towetweather

conditions in our estimated time of comple-

tion, this could prevent the current speedy

    progress.

We are however certain that we will

reach the September target for the contract

    completion, he said.

Long queues are standing in the way

of efficient service at testing stations

    all over the city.

The City of Cape Town Traffic Serv-

ices has noted that there has recently

been a major influx of residents visit-

ing the Citys Driving Licence Testing

Centres (DLTCs) to renew their licenc-

es and to book test appointments.

To alleviate the problem the operat-

ing hours have been adjusted to man-

    age the process.

For card renewals and all other cash

    transactions, officeswill be openMon-

days to Fridays from 08:00 to 14:00 and

on Saturdays from 08:00 to 10:00. All

other transactions such as card collec-

tions and enquiries are open until

15:30 on weekdays and until 12:00

    (noon) on Saturdays. This arrange-

ment will be in place until the end of

    June 2013, unless otherwise stipulat-

    ed.

    Drivers are reminded to collect

their new cardswithin the cut-off time

period as those not collected within

120 days will be destroyed. Drivers

will have to re-apply for a new card

which results in longer waiting times.

    Residents applying for learner and

driving licence tests, aswell as card re-

newals, can now make use of regis-

tered optometrists for their eye tests.

An appointment must be made with

    theoptometrist,whowill thenconduct

the test (free of charge), and supply the

    certificate accordingly. This form, to-

gether with the application form, will

be accepted at the DLTC. Please note

that even though applicants may have

the certificate, they are still required

to join the queue to conduct the

processing of the application and to

    have their fingerprints and photo-

    graphs taken.

    FROM PAGE 1

In the interim the city has deployed points-

men to several traffic hotspots inTableView

as an exercise to determine whether the de-

ployment of these officers will make a differ-

    ence in the long term.

The areas include Blaauwberg Road and

Popham Road; Blaauwberg Road and Otto

du Plessis Drive (the R27); Blaauwberg Road

and Raats Drive; Blaauwberg Road and Boy

de Goede Circle; and Blaauwberg Road and

    Gie Road.

    Herron said the MyCiTi construction

along Blaauwberg Road is scheduled to be

completed by the middle of this year, weath-

    er-permitting, while the construction on

Potsdam Road, from the intersection with

    Blaauwberg Road northwards, is scheduled

for completion by the end of 2013.

The construction of the bus shelters and

totem poles throughout the Table View,

    Parklands, Sunningdale and Blouberg areas

is also completed. Construction work that

necessitates the closure of traffic lanes is on-

ly undertaken after 09:00 on weekdays, and

the lanes are re-opened again by 16:00 so as

tominimise the disruption to peakhour traf-

    fic.

I would like to encourage people to make

use of theMyCiTi bus servicewhere it is pos-

sible and convenient for them to do so.

In response to the demand at peak travel

times we have increased the headways of

our buses, meaning that a bus departs from

the Table View station bound for the Civic

Centre station every six to eight minutes.

This has drastically reduced the waiting

time for a bus, so even if the station appears

to be very full and the queues look long these

move fast, getting more people onto the bus-

    es quicker.

We are working tirelessly to improve the

road conditions and public transport in the

area, as well as other areas across the city.

We are encouraged by the overwhelming

support from the public that we have re-

ceived thus far and look forward to welcom-

ing even more people onto our buses, Her-

    ron said.

V Incidents of vandalism can be reported

to the citys call centre on 086 010 3089.

Vandalism of the traffic lights at the Plattkloof/N7 intersections has worsened the already

frustrating traffic congestion in Table View.

Congested traffic jams will soon become a

thing of the past, because passengers have

placed their travel burdens on the shoulders

    of the MyCiTi bus service.

Since its inception at the 2010 FIFAWorld

Cup the service has surpassed five million

passenger trips. Up until the end of Decem-

    ber 2012 a total number of 5 374 508 passen-

    gers were recorded.

Of this total, over 4,5 million passengers

havemadeuse of the airport route, theTable

View trunk route, as well as the area routes

in the city centre and the Table View area

since the systems launch in May 2011.

Surpassing five million passenger trips is

a significant milestone and indicates that

the residents of the city have embraced this

vision of transport for Cape Town.

    MyCiTi plans for 2013 include:

V Nine routes whichwill be incrementally

implemented in the city centre, stretchingas

far as Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay and Hang-

berg. These routeswill all be operated by the

newmedium-sized, low floor buses to enable

    universally accessible boarding from the

    pavement.

V The current services in the Table View

area will be expanded to include routes to

Mamre and Atlantis, Century City and Du

Noon. These services will be a mix of larger

high floor buses along the main routes, and

    low floor buses.

We are excited about being able to bring

    thisworld-class service to evenmore people.

Not only is the service comfortable and con-

venient for passengers, but offers a consider-

able cost saving to commuterswhenone con-

siders factors such as the petrol price, said

    mayoral committee member for transport,

    roads and stormwater, Brett Herron.

    MyCiTi has plan for 2013

    LEON STEENKAMP

    P

olice are investigating a charge of as-

    sault against two bouncers following

an incident at Marine Circle pub re-

    cently.

Xander Loggenberg (26) laid a charge

with the Table View police after he was as-

saulted outside the German Locker pub on

    12 February.TygerBurger last week report-

ed on Loggenberg claims that he was as-

saulted by a group of young men that ap-

peared to be friends of the bouncer outside

    the pub (Vicious club attack).

    Wounds

He suffered a variety of bruises to his

body as well as an open wound to his scalp

    andacut on this forehead.Hewasalsoalleg-

    edly tasered in the face.

Although Loggenberg claims that he did

nothing to provoke the assault, owner of the

    German Locker, Rhyno Vermaak, differs.

These persons are lying about that

evening, one of my bouncers was attacked

and the other bouncer then pepper sprayed

the one so that he could get him to let go

    of the bouncer, Vermaak says.

    Threats

    Vermaak says Loggenbergs description

of the evenings events and subsequent pub-

licity has harmed his business negatively

and has also seen threats levelled at his se-

    curity guards.

He adds that Loggenberg, his friend and

younger brother were asked to leave the

pub numerous times but kept coming

back, trying to enter the premises.

Vermaak says he has several witnesses

who saw the intoxicated pair of Loggenberg

and his friend threatening the establish-

    ments bouncers.

    Allegations

This guy jumped on the bouncer while

he was still sitting on a chair (outside the

pub entrance), Vermaak says adding that

    Loggenberg was pepper sprayed and

tasered but never attacked with poles

(steel police batons) and sjamboked as

    Loggenberg alleged.

This guy attacked the bouncer outside

first and everyone that saw this climbed in,

they got assaulted by bystanders after my

    bouncers chased them away, Vermaak

    claims.

Police this week confirmed that a charge

of assault against two bouncers were being

investigated. They have not been detained

but have been told to appear in court pend-

ing further investigation, said the Table

    View polices Lt Elizabeth Munro.

    Charges follow club assault

A baby grysbok the size of a small cat was

born at a wetland reserve in Century City.

The baby, which is estimated to be just

a few weeks old was spotted and photo-

graphed by a regular visitor to Intaka Is-

    land, Pat Elk.

The island is part of a grysbok project be-

ing undertaken by the Cape Town City

Council that enables smaller nature re-

serves to house this animal in a more sus-

    tainable way.

In June 2010 two grysbok were re-intro-

duced to Intaka following a lengthy ap-

proval process and with the full support of

Cape Nature, the City of Cape Towns Na-

    ture Conservation Department and the

    Blouvlei/Intaka IslandEnvironmentalAd-

    visory Committee.

    Century Citys environmental manager

Alan Liebenberg says that grysbok are sol-

itary and nocturnal animals that spend

most of the day under bushes and aremore

    active between dusk and dawn.

Last year we found two sets of spoors

close to each other, which is unusual. We

hoped that there would be an offspring and

    our wish was granted.

When people heard about newly married

Richard Kohlers plan to paddle from Na-

mibia to Mozambique along the Atlantic

and Indian Oceans, everybody said he was

    having a mid-life crisis.

It wasnt long before Richard found him-

self paddling on the Orange River in Na-

mibia on a mission to make his dream a re-

    ality.

People said all sorts of things, but on 24

October 2012, I was in my canoe on the Or-

ange River and started paddling towards

Mozambique via the Atlantic Ocean, says

    Richard.

    The 33-year-oldMilnertonRidgemanwas

made for the open waters. He is a paddle

coach and has been a professional yachts-

man for the last 20 years. In 2007 he repre-

    sented SouthAfricawhenhewas amember

of the well-known Team Shosholoza, that

    competed in the Americas Cup.

For Richard being a member of a prestig-

ious sailing teamwasnot enough. I always

    hadaburningdesire to single-handedly sail

across the Atlantic Ocean, but someone

beat me to that. I did more research and

learned that no one had ever paddled from

Namibia to Mozambique. I then found out

about the Operation Smile charity and de-

cided to raise funds for the work that

    theyre doing.

It took Richard 70 days to complete the

mission. I paddled for 45 km each day, that

lasted between four and five hours. At

times it was tough, with the Atlantic Ocean

presenting extremely windy and cold con-

    ditions that needed perseverance.

Richard laughs as he recalls his journey

    paddling back from Mozambique.

On the third day I got attacked by a

shark. On the fifth day my boat broke in

half and I had to spend some time in hospi-

tal. Just as I thought Id recovered and was

ready to continue the mission I returned to

my accommodation and discovered that I

was robbed of everything, except my car

and the clothes on my back, says Richard.

This setback cost Richard a year to recov-

er from, because he needed to acquire the

right equipment to make his journey suc-

    cessful.

Despite all of this Richard says that hell

do it all over again, because ofwhathe expe-

    rienced on the journey.

The biggest highlight of his journey he

says is seeing 15 killer whales as he crossed

    False Bay.

He admits that the experience changed

his life and taught him about his strengths.

Years ago a surgeon told me that Id never

be able to run again. Others toldme that Ill

never finish, but Ive learned that you have

    to challenge yourself.

Richard hopes to raise enough funds for

200 cleft lips and palate operations in south-

ern Africa and Mozambique. The money

has not been calculated yet, but Im hope-

    ful, says the paddler.

    Long paddle is to

    bringmany smiles

Richard Kohler sitting on the West Coast during his journey to Mozambique.

The recent handing over of a trusty bakkie

marked the end of an era at the Eric Miles

    Cheshire Home in Sanddrift.

The Nissan 1 400 bakkie that has been in

the service of the home, which caters for 45

disabled residents, for the last 14 years was

donated back to the De Grendel Lions Club

    last Tuesday.

The De Grendel Lions in conjunction

with two German Lions Clubs donated the

bakkie to the home years ago. The last cou-

ple of years the Lions have been borrowing

the vehicle over weekends for their food

    parcel deliveries.

    Thehome inJanuary receivedanewRen-

ualt Kangoo panelvan thanks to the contri-

bution of the Nomads Golf Club Western

Province. Eric Miles Cheshire Home is the

beneficiary of the clubs Andrew Mentis

    Endowment Fund.

This is very special forme. When I start-

ed working here in 1984 we only had one ve-

hicle which had also been donated by the

Nomads. After all these years it is very nice

to receive another vehicle from the No-

mads, said the homes manager Alet Bos-

    man.

Bosman said they thought it fitting to

give the bakkie back to the Lions for its

    charity work.

    Bakkie heads home again

Handing over the Nissan bakkie to Martin Kallis (left) president of the De Grendel Lions Club is

Rulof Jooste, chairman of the Eric Miles Cheshire Homes executive committee. Also present

were (from left) John Masterton, Martin Thelander (members of De Grendel Lions and Eric

Miles executive committee) and Virginia Kasana, another member of the homes committee.

    Beach cleanup time again

The Blouberg Beach Cleanup invites all

families to its 1Ton1Day Beach cleanup

    on 2 March.

    Volunteers meet in the beachfront

parking lot (Seli 1 wreck) at 10:00.

This will be the third time we are

    running this hugely successful cleanup

day. We are looking for people who will

come and collect bags from us and head

to Big Bay and Melkbos to go cleanup

    there, says organiser Gregory Player.

The beaches are in a very sad state.

    House that Lego built: The

    Parklands College Prefect Body of

    2012 made contact with the

    organisation, Habitat for Humanity,

    which builds houses for underprivi-

leged people. This year the prefects

    have embarked on raising the

    R90 000 needed to build a house.

    The Grade 11, engineering and

graphics and design learners built a

house with Lego. Each Lego brick is

being sold for R100 and they are

    encouraging as many people as

    possible to contribute to the

project. Anyone who would like to

support this cause can send a mail

    to: [email protected].

    Learners from Parklands College

    (from left) are Kay-Lee Lewis,

    Caitlin Moriarty, Giovanni DAmbro-

    sio and Josh Spencer-Hicken.

For the next four months the City of Cape

Town will visit about 26 000 households

across the city to research the transport

    needs of residents.

    According to Councillor Brett Herron,

    mayoral committee member for transport,

roads and stormwater, the 2013 Household

Travel Surveywill guide the development of

a city-wide Integrated Public Transport Net-

    work.

The survey forms part of this administra-

tions commitment to building an inclusive

city, and one that responds directly to the

needs of communities around Cape Town...

    he said.

The surveyors will also visit neighbour-

ing towns such as Paarl and Wellington.

Survey participants will be requested to

    respond to questionnaires that determine

    the residents current travel behaviour.

In addition to questions on current travel

behaviour, a randomly selected sample of

survey participants will also be questioned

on trips during the previous 24 hours and

travel choices that they might make under

different conditions: for instance, if trains

were less crowded and cleaner or if car trav-

    elwas cheaper,wouldmorepeople use them.

Surveyors from the two survey companies

appointed by the city to conduct this re-

search will each carry a name tag and also

an official City of Cape Town appointment

    letter.

    The Table View Neighbourhood Watch

(TVNW) and local community police are ad-

dressing crime by now also cleaning the lo-

    cal green belts.

Theproject started a couple ofmonths ago.

The Community Police Forum (Sector 2),

and the neighbourhood watch have cleaned

up the green belts in our area, which were

in a disgusting state, said Hendrik du Ples-

sis, vice-chairman of the CPF Sector two.

The group also focuses on graffiti cleanup.

During a project on 26 January, the volun-

teers collected two trailer loads of rubbish

from the green belt stretching from next to

Driftwood Caf, in Hamstead Close towards

    Humewood Drive.

The next cleaning operation will take

place on Saturday 9March. The group of vol-

unteers will be cleaning up the CBC School

green belt, which runs to Wood Drive.

CPF chairman Andrew Brace says the

more volunteers show up, the easier it will

be to get the job done.

The team will meet in Sterling Crescent,

and work both ways towards Parklands

    main Road and Ravenswood Drive.

    Fromherewewillmove further up in the

Green belt towards Wood Drive. Depending

on time available, wemay do another couple

of areas as well, Du Plessis said.

Local ward councillor Heather Brenner is

also supporting the initiative by providing

the volunteers with snacks and drinks.

As part of a city clampdown on road

offences, traffic officers of the City of

Cape Town targeted motorists in Ta-

    ble View over the weekend.

    On Saturday roadblocks were held

    on Blaauwberg Road between Pots-

    damRoad andMarineCircle,where 12

    motorists were arrested for driving

    under the influence of alcohol.

    The highest breathalyser reading

recorded was 1,07 mg of alcohol per

1 000 ml of breath. Officers also issued

    38 fines for unlicensed vehicles.

    Similar operations which also in-

cluded the metro police were held in

    areas across the peninsula including

Strand, Grassy Park and Sea Point.

In addition the LiquorUnit also con-

    ducted inspections on night clubs

    throughout the city. These inspec-

tions were based on complaints re-

    ceived from the various communities.

A total of 18 clubs were inspected

which resulted in fines to the value of

R9 500 being issued to club owners for

not complying with the citys regula-

    tions.

    These contraventions mostly in-

    cluded non-compliance relating to the

Business Act and the Community Fire

    Safety Bylaw.

The Citys Noise Control Unit also

    issued written warning notices to

those clubs for allowing loud music to

    be audible outside their premises.

This is the first step towards the con-

fiscation of the sound equipment for

    continued transgressions.

Nothing could be more heart-breaking and

frustrating as to have your child injured, ly-

ing in hospital in a foreign country and hav-

ing no means to be there for him.

This is the reality of the situation Karen

    Cornelius ofTableView is findingherself in.

    Karens son Warren Dinkelmann (22)

started teaching English at the Krathum

Baen School in Thailand in September last

    year.

He really enjoyed it. He was really happy

there and loved working with the children.

I think he really found his niche, Karen

said adding that Warrens Facebook page is

full of photos of him teaching in front of the

    class all smiles.

However, things took a turn for the worst

    on Friday 8 February.

Warrenwas at a friends flatwhenhe leant

against the balcony railing. It gave awayand

he fell three storeys to the ground below.

It was terrible. What was worse is that

no one speaks English and the initial stories

were so confusing. We didnt know what ex-

actly his injuries were and what his condi-

tion was, Karen said describing her emo-

    tions upon hearing the news.

    Pointing towards the communication bar-

rier, Karen and her family only found out

that Warren had also cracked his jawbone

    the Monday following the accident.

    Warrenwas first rushed to anearbyhospi-

tal but then transferred to the Samut Sakhu

    Hospital.

Updates of his situation came to Karen via

    Warrens long-time friend Jamie Stephen

who joined him on the trip to Thailand.

The first couple of days we didnt know

whether he had brain damage orwhether he

was going to make it. He drifted in and out

    of consciousness.

Jamie tookpictures ofWarren in the ICU,

but the hospital staff confiscated his phone

and deleted all the pictures, Karen said.

A Skype conversation with Warren last

week Saturday was the first time Karen saw

    her son after the fall.

It was terrible, because his whole face is

like this, Karen said gesturing a circle with

her hands around her face. But he is re-

    sponsive.

    Warren suffered massive head swelling

and bleeding on the brain, both eye sockets

are cracked, his right cheekbone has been

crushed and his left is cracked, his jawbone

is cracked, both wrists are broken with the

right wrist having an open fracture.

An operation on Sunday 10 February was

    done to repair his wrists.

That Tuesday the doctors said they cant

wait any longer to operate on his injuries as

the bones can start growing back incorrect-

    ly.

That operation lasted seven hours. Anoth-

er operation was done to repair the damage

    to his nose.

Warren currently breaths with the help of

a tracheostomy a pipe that is inserted into

    his throat.

The pins in his wrists will also need to be

    removed in the future.

Karen and her family are now desperately

trying to raise funds for Warrens medical

costs and for a plane ticket to Thailand for

    herself.

His medical costs are currently an esti-

mated R60 000. According to Jamie the doc-

tors saidWarrenwill have to stay inhospital

    for another three weeks.

He has however starting taking in water

and juice. They will try to feed him liquid-

ised food thisweek, as his jaw iswired shut,

    Karen said last Wednesday.

She said there are many South Africans

    in Thailand.

One thing I can tell parents is that they

should take out medical insurance for their

children. Warren said: Ag mom, I wont

    need it, Karen warned.

An elated Karen on Friday received pho-

    tos from Warren.

You cant believe how happy I am. He

looks so, so good. There is still some swelling

but he looks like he did before the fall, she

    said.

Having started renovations to their home

twoweeks before the accident, Karen has no

money to pay for Warrens medical costs or

    to fly abroad.

Theyare currently selling tickets for a live

    show at theWillowbridge Barnyard Theatre

    at R130 each.

The Surfing Safari show takes place on 9

March at 20:00 and features music by San-

tana, The Beach Boys, UB40, Maroon 5, Katy

Perry and the Grease soundtrack. A host of

raffle prizes will also be offered at the show.

To buy tickets or help Karen with a dona-

    tion contact her on 082 096 8338.

Warren Dinkelmann is busy recovering in a

hospital in Thailand following a three storey

    fall.

    first time director, Nevil Sanda-

    ma.

I was so surprised. It was awe-

    some winning the prize, Sanda-

    ma said.

One of the highlights of the film

    festival for Sandama, producer Howard

James Fyvie and associate producer Lauri-

an Guy, was a screening of iBalaclava to

over 300 locals inKliptown, Soweto at a pop-

up cinema. iBalaclava also played at the Bi-

oscope Independent Cinema in the Mabo-

neng Precinct. The Kliptown viewers sat

with eyes glued to the screen as they

    watched iBalaclava and theOscar nominat-

    ed student film Kanye Kanye.

Set in the Du Noon township in Cape

Town, iBalaclava is a gripping drama that

tells the story of two brothers trying to sur-

vive in a community filled with gangster-

    ism and poverty.

iBalaclava is part of a local film project

by a bunch of young film makers who em-

    barkedona journeyof film, producing three

short films that showcase some of South Af-

    ricas exciting new talent.

The project was spearheaded by Joshua

    Generation Churchs Film andMedia team,

the Film Kru. The team was made up of

many first-time film makers and was pro-

duced on a budget of under R8 000.

They got together and invested their

time, creativity and passion into making

modern day parables that show the love of

God to local movie-goers. Over 300 volun-

teers were involved in the project pouring

their hearts and passion into every area, in-

cluding the film making, post production,

    graphics, event co-ordination and every

other aspect involved in pulling a project of

    this size together, said Guy.

Headed by the up and coming filmmaker,

Howard, the teams were given extensive

    training throughout the project.

When the time came for the first screen-

ing of iBalaclava nothing beat a venue in

Du Noon itself. The local high school Ink-

    wenkwezi High, partnered with Joshua

    GenerationChurch to host aYouthFunDay

on 16 June 2012 (Youth Day) ending off with

the first screening to the local community.

    The momentum continued for iBalaclava

at the Love Bombs Film Festival at The La-

bia on Orange from the 2 to 9 August 2012.

Over 2 000movie-goers attended the event

and Sandana and the team had an opportu-

nity to share their experiences of creating

this dramatic film to a sold-out crowd. After

the huge success of this festival, The Love

Bombswent back for the an encore showing

    on 14 and 15 September.

    The filmmakerswere also interviewedby

renowned South African film expert, Barry

Ronge, for Sunday Night at the Movies on

Talk Radio 702 and have been interviewed

several times on CCFM Radio Station.

SABC 2s highest rated youthmagazine pro-

gramme. Hectic 9 nine, also had Sandama

    and the team in studio.

Film makers are excited about the jour-

ney so far, but keep holding onto their seats

for the next step in the adventure.

    DESIRE RORKE

    A

    n unidentified flying object recent-

ly seen in the night sky has astrono-

mers scratching their heads, but one

thing is certain: it was not a meteor.

A report of the sighting was made on the

UFoRSA website on 17 February, by Ferdi

    van Zyl from Brackenfell.

According to Van Zyl, the family was out-

side at about 20:35 that night, when they

suddenly saw a blue light turning red in the

    western skies.

It was very high up, directly over New-

lands. It then slowly turned orange and

then disappeared to a ghostly white shape.

It moved very fast without tumbling in a

    straight line towards the Hottentots-Hol-

    land Mountain whereafter it disappeared

from view, he said adding that the object

    moved at great speed.

    Straight flight

It was not a random movement as with

    asteroids ormeteorites but a definitemove-

ment by the flying object in a straight flight

pattern. It was huge. No sound and no

    lights.

Another sighting was reported on the

same night by a man from Northpine. Ac-

cording to his report a steady orange/red-

dish light moved over Bottelary road and

headed west towards the same mountains.

He spotted it twice within a five minute pe-

    riod.

Both times it disappeared suddenly as

though lights are switched off. The light

was way too big to be that of an aeroplane

andway to steady and bright to be themere

fluttering of aero lights, he said.

Also, on the same night in Hout Bay, at

about 19:58 another couple, spotted what

looked like a bright orange flame, with no

sound. According to their report the light

went out after a second or two, then a large

    grey object plummeted down towards

    Camps Bay.

    Unsure

    SALT Astronomer Nicola Loaring from

the South African Observatory this week,

told TygerBurger that she was aware of at

least one of these sightings, but is not sure

what exactly it could have been.

It could be one of two things, a meteor

or a piece of space junk re-entering the

    earths atmosphere, she said.

Meteors couldmove fast or slow, and ap-

pear to be a shooting star. But in Van Zyls

case he was adamant that what he saw as

a ghostly white shape appeared to be a

rock. In that case it eliminates the possibili-

ty of ameteor, as ameteor, (which is a rock)

would not appear as a rock but rather as a

bright light in the sky, aswas seen inRussia

    recently, she told TygerBurger.

    Earth shaking

She added that if it was a huge meteor

plummeting to earth, there alsowould have

been reports bynowof a crater in the vicini-

ty, which is not the case.

As in the case of Russia, there would

have been a massive disturbance such as

the noise, very bright light and the earth

    shaking.

    Anight out

    shouldnt end

    in hospital

Yet another assault has been reported

outside a club in the northern suburbs.

A 26-year old has laid a charge against

two Table View bouncers for allegedly

assaulting him outside a club on Marine

Circle. While the club owner denies the

charges, this is not the first incident of

its kind in the prominent party spot in

the area. This comes just weeks after a

19-year-old was attacked by a group of

about eight young men and beaten into a

coma in Edward Street. A quick search of

    TygerBurgers archive brings up count-

less articles where young people have

ended up in hospital after being attacked

    near entertainment venues.

This raises the question, what can be

    done to solve the problem?

It is high time effective measures are

put in place to make these areas of the

    northern suburbs safer.

After the much publicised death of

Corn Hale a young teenager, after he

was beaten up in Edward Street in 2011,

    TygerBurger ran an article questioning

the responsibilities of club owners and

    bouncers (Club Safety queried, Tyger-

    Burger, 7 December 2011).

In the article, club owners agreed that

more security was needed on the strip,

but recent incidents show that if security

was upped, it has not made a difference.

One reader suggested earlier this year,

via SMS, that cameras and mobile police

    stations may help the situation.

Whatever the solution may be, it needs

to be found soon, before more teens lose

their lives or are injured while enjoying

    a seemingly harmless night out.

    How do disabled people afford

    to play sports?

    Do they find their own

    sponsors or does someone

sponsor them or must they use

    their own finances?

    I was involved with wheel-

    chair tennis (ACSA) and yes,

    was loaned a sports wheel-

chair. We had to pay for all

    repairs, services and parts.

    I was sponsored on each

occasion for a bus ticket to

    different cities in the country.

Due to the nature of my

disability I needed to fly, so I

    had to pay the difference.

    Upon arrival, all expenses

    were paid, such as accommoda-

    tion, meals, transport to and

    from tennis courts, etc.

    If you wanted free coaching

you had to go to Mitchells

    Plain. You were lucky if

    anyone arrived on time, never

    distance to drive and very

    unsafe.

It is unfortunate that the Oscar

    Pistorius tragedy has been

seized by the anti-gun lobby as

    an opportunity to once again

    spread their lies about a

    gun-free country equalling a

    crime-free country and to attack

    legal firearm ownership.

    More than 150 years of

    worldwide empirical evidence

    and many studies by reputable

    researchers has proved beyond

any doubt that gun control is a

    miserable failure to control

    crime. The anti-gun lobby is

quick to point out that violent

    crime has declined since the

    implementation of the Gestapo-

    style Firearms Control Act

    (read Civilian Disarmament

Programme) in 2004. The fact is

that since 1994 the amount of

    legal firearms has increased as

    black people, who were previ-

ously denied the right to own

    firearms, were now also procur-

    ing firearms for self-defence

which is the real reason for the

decline in violent crime, not the

    frivolous and Draconian FCA.

    There is an inverse correlation

    between the amount of firearms

in a community and the level of

    violent crime. He who sacrifices

    some freedom for security will

    end up having neither freedom

    nor security.

The Table View primary school u-9 mini cricket team was invited to play at Sahara Park in

Newlands on 14 February. It was at the same time that South Africa played against Pakistan,

which added to the excitement of the day. They all looked striking in their red and white Mini

Cricket outfits. Mini Cricket has been played at Table View Primary School for many years and

serves as an introduction to formal cricket. It is for both u-8 and u-9 boys and girls. Everyone

has a turn to bowl, bat and field, teaching them important cricket skills. Here are (back from

left) Cole Welch, Hein Griesel, Elan Davids, Roland Kasper, (front) Neil Barkhuizen, Skye Schnaar,

    Aden Fouch and Jordan Zackey.

Table View Primary School celebrated Valentines Day with enthusiasm and everyone was

dressed beautifully in red and white. Love letters were posted in special boxes and delivered by

the prefects to many lucky recipients. Red balloons were also available and added to the

    festive atmosphere.

Table View Primary recently had their

    annual Swimming Gala. Although the

day was hot, the swimmers had a

good time in the water. A number of

trophies were won by various partici-

pants. Jordan Bosman stood out as

the winner of three trophies the

100 m individual medley (girls open

trophy), the 200 m freestyle (girls

open trophy) and the senior Victrix

    Ludorum trophy.
