Van teensinnige deelnemer tot kampioenGARY VAN DYK

@gvdcapejazz

Bonteheuwel is in the process of recei-ving improvements to public areas thisyear.

Ward 31 councillorNasAbrahamspointedout that some of the biggest concerns overthe past few years have been the state of ro-ads and sidewalks.“There is still a long way to go with all the

roadsandsidewalksbut Iwant to assurepeo-ple that they will be tackled in this financialyear,” said Abrahams.Projects completed so far include:. Oudehout Park inNetreg (GoldenGate).. Tarring of Netregweg.. Tarring of roads and sidewalks Bonte-

heuwel (backstreets as the community na-med it).

. The signalised crossing across RobertSobukwe Road to and from Netreg and Bon-teheuwel. The crossing will mean safer mo-vement for learners and community alike.

. Upgrade of Nooitgedacht Flats is com-pleted, three flats that received brick skinyears ago need to be redone.

. Street lights at the Airport Industrialarea were installed, this is a first for theward.Abrahams also explained there were a

number of projects still in progress.“Safety and security is a major problem.

However, the councillors, together with thecommunity are working extremely hard tocurb crime in the area,” he said.“Installation of bathrooms and toilets in

the Netreg (Golden Gate) area is ongoing inhousing units where toilets were so vandali-

sed over anumber of years that theywarran-ted replacement. “Safety of bridges is alsobeing dealt with continuously by replacingguardrails and stabilising the pathways.“Backyarders’ services are currently in-

stalled, which includes provision of toiletsand prepaid electricity.“Overflow of sewer drains, especially in

streets like Rooi Hout, Rooi Els, is being de-alt with. Proactive work and planning is al-most complete to rid the community of end-less overflows,” said Abrahams.“Foreign objects like rubble, blankets,

plastic bottles found in the sewer pipelinesare one of the causes of blockages.”When it comes to housing, he pointed out

that 777 houses will be built in ValhallaPark.“There is a long list of residents from Val-

halla Park, Bonteheuwel, Netreg, BishopLa-vis andKalksteenfonteinwhowill be accom-modated.“Makriel Park in Nooitgedacht is nearing

completion as part of the Nooitgedacht FlatsRenaissance Project and an upgrade toNooitgedacht Civic worth R10 million is inthe planning phase.”Planning of safety and security measures

in the Charlesville, Montana and Montevi-deo areas arewell advanced, with communi-ty input and consultation in progress. He said there had been “great strides” in

developing the ward, both in terms of inter-ventions and legacy projects.“Youth and Social Development will be a

big focus this coming financial year. I wantto thank thosewhohave showncommitmenttowards uplifting our ward and broadercommunity.”

Bonteheuwel spaces get boosted

stryd tegemoet gegaan sonder beseerdeeerstekeuse-spelers soos Waldo Prins-loo (slot), RenierMarais (haker) enDan-well Demas (vleuel).Daarby het hardebaarde soos Marius

The second round of the SouthAfricanmain circuitchampionship due to take place in conjunctionwith the Extreme Festival sponsored by WingfieldMotors at Killarney on Saturday, is expected to bethe biggest meeting of the year.Topping the bill, the national production cars are

to be seen in a virtual one class format for the firsttime. This has come about after the class T entriesreceived more muscle by being allowed additionalturbo boost, larger tyres and unrestricted suspen-sion modifications. The results of the three events during the first

round at Zwartkops last month which sawMichaelvan Rooyen’s turbocharged Chev Cruze win thefirst race, with class A Audi S4’s in the hands ofHennie Groenewald and Michael Stephan takingthe next two, appear to justify the changes. However, the pit critics were claiming the tyre

wear on the abrasive surface worked to the benefitof the all wheel drive Audis. Additionally, Killar-ney has longer straights that may be an advantagefor the smaller turbocharged Chev and Ford FocusSTs.It sounds like a close one.BrennonGreen (Golf 5GTi) is theCape’s only rep-

resentative in a new production car category forprivateers. His main opposition is likely to comefrom Freek Burger Jnr and Snr, who were out-standing at Zwartkops in a pair of Mazda 3 MPSs.Then there are some who claim the skrik vir niks

tigers in the Engen Volkswagen Cup events are al-ways responsible for some of the best racing of theday. Of course the driver to watch here is teenagerSheldon van der Linde for whom big things are be-ing predicted. Although Sheldon won the firstround up north he was closely shadowed by Tas-min Pepper and Shaun la Reservee, with the Cape’sJohn Craig Jnr, not far behind. With the first race due off at 10:10, admission is

R90 for adults and R40 for scholars under 16. Thereis no charge for kiddies under 12. Tickets are alsoavailable from Computicket.
