Mark says he regularly spoke with his brother during the day and tried to call him. “His phone was never off and he always answered his phone – especially when our mother called.” His brother says he knew something was wrong and called Nishendran’s wife, who said she had last spoken to him at 17:15 that day. “I went home, had supper and continued to call him, but his phone was off. I visited his home and got the spare access remote from his wife and went to the factory.” Mark made his way to the workshop in Station Road and says nothing could prepare him for what he experienced next. Nishendran’s bakkie was parked outside and Mark says the entire workshop was dark. The door was closed, but not locked. Using the torch on his phone, Mark tried to find his way in the dark and stumbled across a pool of blood. “The whole place was full of blood. The mate-rials he uses which were stacked against thewall were covered in blood spatter. He hadbeen bludgeoned to death,” says Mark as hestruggles to hold back the tears.Police were called to the scene.Marks says what makes the case so sinister

was his brother was pedantic about security.“He had several cameras and you couldn’t

get in therewithout being picked up by a cam-era.When the policewent through the factorythey found all the cameras had been rippedout and the hard drive containing the footagewas taken. Now who would know where thathard drive even was,” he questions.According to the records Nishendran only

had one employee – a Malawian man namedPromise John. Since the incident he has notreturned to work and the family have now is-sued a R5000 reward for his location as theybelieve he may have information about whathappened to Nishendran.According to Milnerton police spokesper-

son Warrant Officer Daphne O’Reilly the re-sults of the post mortem are not yet availableyet, but she confirms a murder docket hasbeen opened. She says police believe the employee may

have information on what occurred and visit-ed his home in Nyanga but have been unableto trace him.V Anyone with information about the whereabouts ofthe employee can call the investigating officer on082 417 4318 or the family on 076 868 7721.

Alcohol, rape drug alertMONIQUE DUVAL

@monique_duval

Analert over drinks being spiked inTa-ble View and linked to rape cases senttongues wagging last week.

Table View police raised the alarm aboutrape cases in the precinct and according tothe findings the youngest victim was a 15-year-old.In their warning, police indicated that

while analysing all the rape cases reportedfrom January until last week, there wereseveral cases where it was found that thevictim was either drunk or her drink hadbeen spiked.Police spokesperson Lieutenant Adriana

Chandler says in the cases where drinkswere spiked, the victim did not know theperpetrators.

Victim knew the suspect“In the cases where alcohol was exces-

sively used, the victim knew the suspect.”TygerBurger questioned the findings and

was informed that rape victims in the pre-cinct were aged between 15 and 39 and werereported in all three sectors. In the cases involving women being

drunk, Chandler says women reported cas-es against men they knew. These includehusbands, boyfriends, relatives and friendsof the victim.

Analysing the statistics, Chandler says66% of the cases reported between Januaryand May resulted in an arrest as the perpe-trators were identified by the victims.Asked what was used to drug victims in

the reported spiking cases, Chandler ex-plains the type of drug used has not yet beendetermined. She says, in general, the drug Rohypnol

is usedand in somecases victimsdo remem-ber what happened to them. For the spiking cases, police have re-

vealed that the youngest victim was 15.These incidents took place in complexesand residences and not pubs and clubs.“No person should go through an ordeal

such as rape. Neither should the parents ofa child or adult.“Parents should educate their childrenon

general safety so that they can develop thecommon sense to always stay alert andsafe,” she says.Community Policing Forum (CPF) chair-

person David Harris says they wereshocked at the reports and urge parents totake more care.He says while underage drinking is a big

concern for crimefighters, they needed par-ents to be aware of what was happening totake better care.“Underage drinking is a concern and if

you look at these spiking cases it has direconsequences. Parents need to be alert and

aware and check in on their children. Theyshould also play a role in making sure theyknow where their children are.”

Parents need to be awareDr David Fourie, regional director of the

SouthAfricanNational Council onAlcohol-ism andDrugDependence (Sanca) says dur-ing prevention programmes they oftenhighlight the need for parents to be awarewhen their childrenareattendingparties orsocial gatherings. He says with the use of drugs like Rohyp-

nol, the victimsmaynot immediatelynoticetheyhavebeendrugged. Inaddition, he saysthey might not even be able to taste theirdrink has been spiked, but may experiencedizziness, confusion andmay appear disori-entated.TableViewpolice have also issued the fol-

lowing tips:. Never take alcohol from someone you

have just met (male of female). The femalemight be an accomplice.

. Buy your own drinks at the bar.

. Ensure the bartender opens the drinkin front of you and not while his/her backis turned

.Arrangewith your friend prior to goingout to take you home or contact the personwho took you to the club/party.

. Do not drink more than your limit – infact, try not to even reach your limit.

A R11.7 million project to make the N7highway safer is nearly complete. The project being undertaken by the

provincial transport and public works de-partment, has seen the installationof newstreet lights on the N7 between the Bos-mansdam and Potsdam interchanges tomake this road safer.Once this project is complete, the West-

ern Cape government will have installedstreet lights along three critical roads,

namely the N1, N2 and N7 up to the pointwhere the South African National RoadsAgency (Sanral) is responsible. The new lights are being installed along

the median, which includes the laying ofnew cable and four new electrical connec-tions.During winter last year, many motor-

ists raised the alarm about people cross-ing the dark road and the transport de-partment confirmed several fatalities.According to department spokesperson

Byron La Hoe, the erection and installa-tion works have been completed but the

Eskompower supply connections are stilloutstanding.Asked whether the recent protests in

Dunoon and the subsequent closures ofthe highway affected or delayed theproject, La Hoe said these protests havenot affected the construction works as aresult of the efforts of the contractor to li-aise with the local community.“The project has created work opportu-

nities for the residents of Dunoon in par-ticular. Therehavebeen several labour is-sues, but this has been resolved duringthe course of the project.”

There have been hard times, but the joyof challenging views about disabledchildren make it all worth it.

These are the words used by the womenof Elundini home for disabled children andEducare centre in Dunoon.

It all started several years ago whenfounder Indy Kawana noticed many parentsin the informal settlement kept their disa-bled children at home out of embarrass-ment.

“There was this boy who was paralysedand nobody bothered to think about his fu-ture. His family just thought there was nofuture for him so they didn’t bother to getcare for him or find a school for him,” shesays.

“I started looking after him and we real-ised there were more children suffering be-cause parents didn’t know what to do orwere embarrassed.”

In 2008, with help for other women, Kawa-na sought a solution and quickly estab-lished the centre in 2008.

Here they care for and help educate chil-dren who have various disabilities. In addi-tion they assist parents by educating themon each child’s disability and help themcare for the little ones.

Elizabeth Malope, who works at the cen-tre, says the were soon contacted by parentsin other impoverished areas like Joe Slovowho were seeking help.

“There was a great need and the centre be-came big. We started a plan to provide trans-port for the children to assist the parents sothey can work. We charge a small fee butthese children come from very poor homes

and we cannot turn them away.”The centre now has plans to build a centre

in Dunoon, but Kawana says it has beenoverrun with problems with illegal squat-ters. Most recently they were shocked whenthey were called to the site where residentshad found a man had been stabbed and hisbody dumped on their property.

The centre is being assisted by the Chev-ron refinery and according to Donna Fata, refinery policy government public affairsmanager, to date the monetary contribu-tions have been focused on operational

costs.Kawana says the dedication of staff dur-

ing tough financial times is an illustrationof their dedication to the cause.

“There were times when we didn’t knowif we would have electricity or food. We plancarefully, but sometimes the costs are justtoo much. Everyone stands together and wepush through, and it’s so sad to see teacherswho are willing to go on even when thereis no money,” she says with tears flowing.V If you would like more information on the centrecall 083 987 6434.

Centre plans to expand

Old Tokkie’s steam(y) love story

Oom Jim’s sons and their families made a special trip to Cape Town to see Old Tokkie.

Old Tokkie, one of two steam enginesguarding the entrance to Intaka Is-land Eco-Centre, was the subject of a

profound love story. The other protagonist of this love story

was Oom Jim van Rensburg, an engine driv-er at the Douglas Colliery near Emahlahleniin Mpumalanga.Oom Jim started working at the colliery

in 1958. At the time the colliery had threesteam locomotives – two large ones to haulcoal from the mine to the nearest railwaystation at Vandyksdrift and a small DouglasNo 3 engine to help shunt the trucks and oc-casionally to help nudge the larger enginesif theywere battling to haul coal trucks overthe hill, says Lewellyn Janse van Rensburg, the third of Oom Jim’s four sons.He says the small engine was lovingly

called Tokkolos after the small Zulu mythi-cal figure Tokoloshe but to OomJim shewasjust Old Tokkie.“Oom Jim loved steam engines. He used

to joke that when hewent for blood tests, thedoctor had to squirt out the first 10ml, as itwas just steam.”Lewellyn says when his dad worked the

night shift, they would listen for the soundof the steam engine coming back from thestation.“My dad would then use the steam en-

gine’s whistle to say to us ‘I love you’ by giv-ing his signature whistle: one long whistlefollowed by three short ones - tuuuuut, tu-tu-tut, repeated a few times.“I can still hear it.”Shortly before Oom Jim retired in 1986,

the mine decided to retire Tokkolos by plac-ing it ondisplay in front of themine’s offices.“It was my dad’s honour to extinguish the

last fire in her belly, and fasten the hand

brake for the last time.”In a letter Oom Jim wrote in 1991 to Peter

Holz, the then editor of Mining World, hespoke of his affection for Old Tokkie.“I love Old Tokkie....If she could talk she

would say ‘I Love Oom Jim also because healways cleaned me till I looked like a lovelylady with a beautiful dress and shoes.’“I always used to talk to Old Tokkolos and

said if you pull this load for me nicely, I’ll

take you to the Drive In on Friday night. Shealways obliged. Whenever I go to Douglas Ialways go to see her and climb into the cab, work the controls and do a little bit of dust-ing off for her and believe me when I leave,my eyes are wet ...”Lewellyn said his dad’s wishes were to be

Reusedeurbraak in huisrooftogte

Volgens lt.kol.

by ’n huis in die Meerenhof-kompleks.

’n Taurus .38 Special-rewolwer, waarvan diereeksnommer afgevylwas, verderweg in diegras gevind. Dis moontlik dieselfde vuurwa-penwat sowat driemaande gelede in ’n huis-rooftog in Table View gebuit is.“Dis beslis ’n deurbraakenonsmensevoel

We shouldnurture ournursesThey are our friends, our confidants, ourdoctors and our carers.

They come in our darkest hours andthey alleviate our pain and our loneli-ness.

Our heroes, our fathers and mothers, our teachers and our punching bags.

Society’s shame. The ridiculous salary of a nurse should

make us all sleep a little more uncomfort-ably at night.

You know those days when you feel asif something is wrong, but you can’t puta finger on it?

It’s probably the feeling of guilt. Many think a “thank you” is all that is

expected from us when a nurse tends to aloved one in hospital.

I’m obviously not a nurse, so I can’tspeak for them, but while I wouldappreciate a “thank you” as a nurse, itdoes not pay the rent.

“Dear landlord, I regret to inform youthat I don’t havethe cash to pay youthis month, but Ido have 18 234thank-yous.”

Nurses haveprotested beforeand they willagain. What theymost likely won’tdo is cause aninternational sceneby throwing bricksat police, burningbooks and destroy-ing property.

Of all the callsfor justice out there, the one that movesme the most is whispered by the poverty-stricken nurse.

The world is upside down.In far too many sectors those who work

hardest earn the least. So, how doessociety deal with this obvious injustice?

We give them a day, of course!World Teachers’ Day.International Firefighters Day.International Nurses Day!The latter was “celebrated” on Friday,

but really, if I were a nurse, a salaryincrease would have benefitted me more.

There is an argument that a nurse is anurse because it is his/her passion tohelp people. People will say nurses woulddo what they do for free, as long as theycan fulfil their calling. I can only laughat this line of “self-justification”, which isclearly born from guilt.

Nurses deserve so much more than aspecial day, more than a thank-you, andeven more than a substantial raise.

They deserve more than a short piecein a community newspaper.– André Bakkes

Stellenberghethommet 3-41 bloedneus ge-

loop teen HJS Paarl, terwyl HS Bellville met42-23 kous oor die kop getrek is deur HS

Swartland. Maar aan die wenkant was HTSBellville (10-0 t Hottentots-Holland), Tyger-berg-klub (10-5 tMonumentpark),Milnerton(10-3 t Hamlets-klub), Kasselsvlei (41-7 tMelkbosstrand), President (20-14 t ReddamConstantia), Fairbairn (22-13 t Table View),Fairmont (38-10 t Somerset-kollege), Berna-dino Heights (16-14 t Scottsdene) en Excelsi-or (29-3 t Eben Dönges).

GOLF: BELLVILLE AMATEUR MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW

Victorious

Bellville golfer Gerlou Roux retained his SA Mid-AmateurStroke Play Championship title at Silver Lakes CountryClub in Pretoria. PHOTO: ERNEST BLIGNAULT

Western Province’s Gerlou Rouxstaved off Shaun Stapleton fromCentral Gauteng to claim back-to-

back titles in the SA Mid-Amateur StrokePlay Championship recently.“I guess I got a jump on that old adage

that life begins at 40; if 39 is this good, Ican’twait to hit the forties,” jested theBell-ville golfer after he sealed a two-stroke vic-tory on eight under 280 with rounds of 68,73, 68 and 71 at Silver Lakes Country Clubin Pretoria.Roux swept to a four-shot triumph last

year, but this time around, the country’snumber one ranked mid-amateur said vic-tory tasted a whole lot sweeter.“It’s taken a few days to sink in, because

it was mentally a lot tougher to go the fulldistance this year,” said Roux.“When I set myself a goal to represent

South Africa on both the Open Amateurand Mid-Amateur circuits last year, Icouldn’t even describe the feeling when Iachieved it. But like most of the guys onthemid-amateur circuit, I hold downa full-time job and that had to take priority.“I came into the tournament knowing

that I have a target onmy back. It was real-ly tight at the top over the four rounds. Ikept my head down and got the job doneand that’swhy thiswin feels somuchmore

special.”Roux started the final round with a one-

stroke edge over Stapleton and a two-shotlead on Central Gauteng’s Ryan Dreyer.“I knew the last round would be tough,”

Roux said. “When you have three ex-Sun-shine Tour pros going head-to-head, it wasalways going to be an extreme test of pa-tience and willpower.”Rouxburst from theblockswith abirdie,

but short-sided himself at the second hole.“There is a tree right in themiddle of the

fairway at this par five,” he said. “I hit agood tee shot, but the ball just kept goingstraight and it finished up a few inchesfrom the trunk. My only option was topunch out, but I still had 210 metres to thepin. I took my medicine and moved on.”Rouxnotchedbirdies at sevenand 10 and

had a two shot lead on Stapleton when thepair reached the par four 17th.“I pulledmy tee shot in the rough,” Roux

said. “With the pin at the back of the islandgreen, I decided to lay up rather than gofor the pin. I hit a decent chip, but I missedthe par putt. Shaun nearly flew the green, but his ball stayed up. His chip landed twofeet from the hole and he holed the putt tosave par. Going to 18, my lead was cut toone and I was going to go all out. Shaunplayed first and hit his tee shot in the haz-

ard on the right. I knew he would struggleto save par, so I put the driver back in thebag, took out a rescue and a moreconservative approach. All Ineeded was a regulation fiveto win.”Roux parred the hole to

seal victory, Stapletonmade six for a 72 to finishsole second and Dreyerclosed with a 74 to takethird on 285.“I beat kids more

than half my age toreach the numberone spot in therankings and itwas a huge dealfor me when Ireached my goal torepresent South Afri-ca on both circuits last year, butwhen you start knocking onthe door at 40, you have tomake sacrifices,” Roux said.“Now that I have back-to-

back wins, I’ve given my-self a new goal for nextyear. I’m going to go for ahat-trick and that gives every guy on themid-amateur circuit the goal to stop me.”

The 2016 Western Cape Karting Champi-onship explodes back into action at Kil-larneyafter a twoandahalfmonthbreakon Saturday, with leading local racerskeen to reassert their authority, asmuchas their rivals will be out to stop thosewinning ways.Nowhere will the action be fiercer

than in the high school Rotax JuniorMax 125s, where a full grid and perhapsa little unfinished business could makethe action all that much sweeter.WP champion Jason Coetzee (RKT Ko-

smic) will be keen to extend his Capechampionship advantage over nationalseries leader Sebastian Boyd (BoydFreight Kosmic) and the man Coetzeecontroversially tangled with at the Kil-larney national, Dario Busi (AutomanBirel).Never ignoreDaniel Duminy (Kosmic)

who is out to scorehis first Cape regionalwin, Andrew Rackstraw (Tony), AidanStrydom (TurboTech CRG) and Kosmictrio JP Hamman, Sam Lockhoff and Si-mon Simpson-Heath (SAKRA Kosmic)among that lot, and rest assured that thisclass will deliver extreme action in eachof its three heats.A step up to the Senior Max open 125s

sees reigning SA and WP Junior Maxchampion Dino Stermin (DesignerTrims RKT Kosmic) ready for revengeover Delano Fowler (Suprocom FA) fol-lowing both drivers’ fraught weekendson the PE national, while Hylton Peters(CRG), Nicholas Jacobs (SAKRA Zanar-di) Lukas Nel and Arnold du Toit will al-so be keen to join in that scrap. The quickest class of the day sees SA

championship leader Julian van der

Watt (Kosmic), formerWP champion Jo-nathan Thomas (Partners CRG) andTristan de Nobrega (Race Driver SACRG) fighting for DD2 gearbox honours. The smallest classes have long been

thebastionofWPclasses, with local driv-ers dominating the Maxterino 60cc pri-mary school class and Joseph Oelz (Za-nardi), Charl Visser (Battery Energy Za-nardi) and Tate Bishop (Kosmic) set tobattle for overall honours again. They’ll need to keep an eye on Kai Van

Zijl (CRG), Troy Dolinschek (Makita Ko-smic), Jason MacBeath (Kosmic) andyounger Visser brother Kyle (BatteryEnergyZanardi) – all ofwhomareknock-ing hard on that podium door. The smallest karters are the under

eight cadet class kids, the breedingground of future race champions, andthere you can expect the likes of Joaquinde Oliveira, Reza Levy (Jive), Paul Mal-colm, Reese Koorzen, Joshua Smit andEthan Stier to be among the leadingbunch. The Cape Clubmen round off the day’s

action and there the lads will be desper-ate to break the iron grip that kartinglass Isabelle Fowler has with her Supro-com TonyKart. Andrew Thomas (BlakeBros Topkart), Marco Viegas, GeorgeSchwager, Jody van Rensburg and Kianvan der Merwe will be among those outto stem Isabelle’s race-winning tide.V Find Killarney Raceway on Potsdam Road Kil-larney Gardens where the kart track is situatedacross the main circuit from the main pit com-plex where you will find a cool atmosphere, goodcommentary and great grub and drinks at theclubhouse in the pits.
