Law abiding residents in Sum-mer Greens feel as if they’re try-ing to sell ice to an Eskimo.

They are apparently complaininguntil they’reblue in the face, but thebattle against stopping the tide ofdilapidation in the suburb is seem-ingly being lost.TygerBurger reported in August

on some of the issues affecting Sum-mer Greens (“Anarchy looming”).

Since then the newspaper has

been inundated with complaintsranging from zoning regulationcontravention to disrespectful resi-dents.

One resident is convinced the sit-uation is getting worse.

“I have been living here for 12years and it was never this bad. Theplace has been deteriorating rapid-ly over the last two years. People ofall colours complain. Some reckonit’s like living in Khayelitsha!”

She prefers to stay anonymous toavoid a backlash from the “guilty”parties.

In the most recent TygerBurgerarticle, chairperson of the SummerGreensResidents’Association,DolfColyn, said that one property wasbeing sub-letted to more than 20people.

It was also mentioned that sever-al houses arebeingusedasbusinesspremises.

She is convinced that drugs arebeing sold atmanyof these so-called“businesses”.

However, spokesperson for Mil-nerton police W/O Daphne Dell,says suspects who have recently

been arrested on drug tradingcharges were selling drugs fromtheir own homes and not from theseresidential businesses.

Dell agrees, however, that drugsare a major problem in the suburb.

“We raid a place every week andhave made numerous arrests. Tikand dagga are big problems in Sum-mer Greens,” she confirms.

A plethora of other crimes anddisturbances are being committeddaily says the fed-up woman.

“People urinate on the sidewalk,slaughter chickens, hang their

washing in the street and make ex-cessive noise at night,” she says.

Yet another resident who prefersto stay anonymous agrees with thefirst complainant.

“Four families are living in athree-bedroom house with onebathroom, but those who live in theshack in the back have no toilet fa-cilities. Where do they relievethemselves during the night?

“One of the ladies that stays therebrushes her teeth in front of thehouse...”

Visitors to a Milnerton pub were shocked af-ter a patron shot himself in the toilet lastweek.

The incident took place on Wednesday af-ternoon at 16:45 at the London Pub in Koe-berg Road.

Witnesses said that Rory Perry (50) fromTygerhof was a frequent visitor to the puband always ordered a beer, a meal and thenanother beer.

According to W/O Daphne Dell one of thebar ladies working at the pub was allegedlyin a relationship with the deceased.

She adds that it is believed at this stagethat the bar lady recently broke upwith him.

It has, however, been revealed by a staffmember that the bar lady broke up with himmonths before Perry shot himself.

“I think it was down to a lot of stress and

pressure,” says the staff member, beforementioning that Perry also had some finan-cial issues.

“He came in and ordered a T-bone steak!Little did we know he was also concealing agun. The pub was always his home awayfrom home. It is devastating.”

Dell elaborates: “On this particular day,Perry visited the pubasusual.After themealhe informed the bar lady that he was justquickly going to the bathroom. Twominuteslater she heard a gunshot coming from thedirection of the bathroom,” Dell said.

The bar lady rushed to the toilets andfound Perry lying near the foyer of the bath-room. He had a gunshot wound to his headand a pistol was found next to him.

The police were immediately contacted,but Perry was dead when they arrived.

Dell confirmed that an inquest docket hasbeen opened and is being investigated.

Man ‘commits suicide’ at pub

The luck of a gang of three house robbersthat is suspected of terrorising victims inMelkbosstrand, Table View and Durban-ville over the last couple of months has fi-nally run out.

Two of the men were arrested and one shotand killed by police after their most recent jobin Melkbosstrand went awry.

An internal police investigation by the Inde-pendent Police InvestigativeDirectorate (IPID)is currently under way into the shooting of thesuspect along the N7 on 29 August.

The incident followed after a house robberyin Kiewietjie Road, Van Riebeeckstrand, Melk-bosstrand on the same night.

According to Capt Ronita van der Toorn, sta-tion commander of Melkbostrand police, threemen broke into a house at around 01:30.

“The three suspects gained entry to the prop-erty by jumping over the back wall facing thebeach.

“Themanwasworking late andwas standingoutside smoking when three men threatenedand forced him inside through the back slidingdoor,” she said.

The robbers then tied up both the 57-year-oldman and his 55-year-old wife and made themsit on their bed while the robbers raided thehouse.

Wearing balaclavas, gloves and armed withknives the three suspects loaded valuables likecellphones, a laptop, a camera, jewellery anda firearm in the victims’ white Toyota Yaris be-fore fleeing the scene.

“One of our patrol vans spotted the car and,as it looked suspicious, they followed it. Achase ensued and back-up was called in overthe radio,” van der Toorn said.

Members of the K9 Unit and Flying Squadwho were at the time conducting an opera-tion in Du Noon, responded to the call.

The Yaris was forced off the road along theN7, in the direction of Cape Town, oppositeDu Noon.

According to the IPID they are investigat-ing the death of one of the three suspects.

“It is alleged that oneof the three occupantsof the vehicle attempted to escape afterwhichthe police members shot him. He was de-clared dead on the scene,” said MosesDlamini, national spokesperson for IPID.

The other two suspects did not attempt toescape andwere promptly arrested inside thevehicle.

The stolen property including the firearmwas recovered inside the stolen vehicle.

The deceased is a 26-year-old Angolan na-tional from Hout Bay.

The other two suspects – a 23-year-old An-golan and a 30-year-old Namibian – are bothfrom Du Noon.

They have appeared in court but the casewas postponed to 21 September pending a li-ne-up identification this week.

Melkbosstrand police are investigating thethreemen’s involvement in six similar houserobbery cases inMelkbosstrand over the pastfew months.

“We are also investigating whether theymight be involved in house robbery cases inTable View and Durbanville,” van der Toornsaid.

Dlamini on Friday confirmed that the in-ternal investigation into the shooting is stillunder way and that no arrests have yet beenmade.

In connection with the drug problem,Dell says they must inform the police im-mediately if there is a suspicion of drugsbeing sold in the suburb.

More imminently, residents can go andmeet ward councillor Joy McCarthy at aDemocratic Alliance information day atthe Summer Greens Hall on Saturdayfrom 10:00 and discuss the state of the sub-urb face to face with her.

McCarthy says there is definitely hopefor Summer Greens, but adds that theprosecution process takes a long time tocomplete.

A passion for saving lives, has recently ear-ned a Bloubergstrand resident the title ofWestern Province Lifeguard of the Year.The title is the cherry on top of a seven-ye-

ar-long involvement with the Big Bay SurfLifesaving Club.Lifesaving became away of life for Darren

Willars after his younger son Craig Willars(14)was first spotted by one of the club’s juni-or coaches.The idea of combining his love for water

andbeingoutdoorswith lifesavingappealledto the then 42-year-old Darren.Despite the challenge of completing 12-

hour patrol shifts and acquiring the know-ledge, skills, fitness and stamina to be a life-guard, he took to this new lifestyle like aduck to water.Darren is also actively involved as the co-

ach andmanager of the u-14 Nippers (the na-me given to the club’s junior budding lifegu-

ards).“Coaching the Nippers is a reward on its

own,” Darren said. His u-14 Nippers werethe Western Province Champions this year,a historical first for the club and an achieve-ment he is really proud of.“It is probably my biggest achievement as

a lifeguard,” Darren said.His enthusiasm is shared by both his sons

Dayle Willars (20), who is a spot guard andCraig who is currently doing his junior life-guard programme.Darren places great emphasis on safety -

amongst beach goers, swimmers, surfersand his fellow lifeguards, who he constantlyreminds of this ever crucial concept.“I don’t think there’s anything greater

than saving the life of a human being.”Darren’s beach front resumé includes be-

ing a qualified surf-instructor, completinghis level-three first aid course, surf exami-ner and completing 137 hours of voluntaryhours.

It is this passion for lifesaving and thosewhoneed looking after on the beach that ear-ned him a lifeguard of the year title.

A missing child at Table View beach wasamong the emergency calls the Melk-bosstrand NSRI Rescue Station respond-ed to this past weekend.

Beaches at Table View, BloubergstrandandMelkbosstrandwere teemingwith eagersun seekers following the first signs of warmweather over the weekend.The NSRI crew in Melkbosstrand had a

busy start to the season on Sunday whenthey received three rescue calls in less thanan hour.“The first call was received at 16:20 when

the rescue station was activated to a reportof a drowning in progress on the beach near

Woodbridge Island, Milnerton,” said NSRIstation commander Rhine Barnes.The rescue vessel, Spirit of the Vines was

launched at Melkbosstrand while the rescueboat, Mens Health Rescuer was taken byroad to be launched in the area of the inci-dent.“Arriving at the scene, NSRI members

found that the City of Cape Town Fire andRescue Services were already in attendancebut no sign of any drowning incident couldbe found and no one on the beach could shedany light on any drowning incident on thebeach,” Barnes said.While still busywith the report of a drown-

ing in progress, the NSRI received another

call at 16:36 reporting a male kayaker over-due in the area.“According to his wife, the 57-year-old

man from Australia, now living in AtlanticBeach in Cape Town, had set off from thebeach in front of Woodbridge Island on hisdebut paddle at around 10:00 and was sup-posed to meet his wife near Dolphin Beach.However, when he did not arrive she raisedthe alarm.”A search commenced and just after 17:00,

the man was found at Big Bay, Blouberg-strand.“It would appear that he had paddled

much further and longer than he had intend-ed but since he was safely ashore, no furtherassistance was required. It is not believedthat these two incidents are related,” Barnesconfirmed.At 17:15 NSRI Melkbosstrand were alerted

to a seven-year-old girl, reportedly from DuNoon, who according to her child minderhad disappeared from the beach, at TableView.“The childminder stated that shehadgone

into the water for a quick dip to cool off andwhen she returned the childwas gone. It wasnot clear if the child had followed her intothe water or wandered off.”Fearing that the child had entered the sea

and drowned while the child minder wasswimming, NSRI and police were alerted. Asearch commenced at sea and on land andthe NSRI was joined by the local Table ViewNeighbourhood Watch.Despite an extensive search, however, no

sign of the child has been found. As the lastlight faded, NSRI withdrew their rescueboats and the police took over the scene –there was no further information.

.Lifeguards will be on duty during theSeptember school holidays from 10:00 to18:00.

The new footbridge at the KillarneyRace Track will make movingaround thevenue for spectators andcrews alike much easier and safer.The footbridge, which took about

two months to build, was recentlycompleted.According to Killarney Race

Track’s public relations officer it isjust in time for the biggest race oftheyear that takesplace at the trackthis coming Saturday – the SouthAfrican Championship WesbankSeries

“We had a bridge that was shapedlike a tyre when the track openedin 1962 but it was difficult to crossas it was very steep. It started rust-ing and deteriorated to such an ex-tent that it eventually started sway-ing in the wind,” Pheiffer said add-ing that the bridge was eventuallyremoved.As the track became more popu-

lar so the need arose to expand thepit area.A second pit was built on the oth-

er side of the track but this made itdifficult to gain access to the pitwhen racing was under way.

“Unlike other racetracks wedon’t charge the public to visit the

pits. The new footbridge now con-nects both the pit areas and can be

used by anyone, pit crews and thepublic,” he said.

Next year will see a brand new schoolopen its doors in Sunningdale.

The building of the new Sunningdale Pri-mary School has been completed and was of-ficially handed over to theWestern Cape Ed-ucation Department by the Department ofTransport and Public Works on 30 August.This school is served by the Metro North

Education District (MNED) whose officesare located in Parow.This new school, situated in Tryall Street,

Milnerton police are still waiting for the rel-atives (if there are any) of Bernard Chris-tiaan Greyling to come claim his body.

Greyling’s body was discovered on 15 De-cember last year behind London Pub inKilldare Road, Milnerton.

His fingerprints identified the man withno fixed address as Bernard ChristiaanGreyling.

Hewas dressed in blue jeans, black leatherjacket, striped T-shirt and white tekkieswhen he was found.

There were no visible injuries or woundsand post mortem found that he died of natu-ral causes.

The investigating officer has no contactdetails of any possible family members norhas any missing person been reported thatfits his description.

Spokesperson for the local police, W/ODaphne Dell, concludes: “We want to appealto anyone who might know the deceased orthe whereabouts of his family to please con-tact W/O Jody Pienaar on 021 528 3800.”

play world would stretch theirbacks and promptly return to theirdefault position to avoid suspicion.

All this plays out in the imagina-tion, of course.

Or does it?When I walk past the giant Bis-

marck boat model, the rows of gunsfollow my every move...

I turn my head in disbelief andthen the propeller starts whizzingalarmingly.

Startled I try to act nonchalant as

I leap back in horror.The older man with the remote

control giggles like anaughty child.Isn’t that, after all, what these

conventions are all about?Getting in touch with one’s inner

child?The Cape Model and Toy club

members insist it ismore about col-lecting those toys that leave today’sadults reminiscent of a bygone era– a less hurried time.

Present-day children sometimesstare in fascination at the thingstheir parents did when they wereyoung, and even sometimes desiresomething they never knew.

There were indeed children atthe annual Spring Fair on Satur-day, but their wide eyes were foronce matched by their adult peers.

And peers they were!Everyone who walked into the

bustling and colourful hall at thesport complex shared an unparal-leled wonder.

I am told that the club is “tryingto get as much exposure as possibleto the Toy Shows so as to grow thehobby and to encourage the young-er generation to take part”, but per-haps it gives them an excuse toshow off their toys to like-mindedadults.

Members buy and sell varioustypes of die-cast toys, train sets, slotcars, plastic kits and all manner ofcollectable toys.

The club has between 160 and 170members.

Local schools are taking on thechallenge to get tough withtrash!

Lastweek theCity ofCapeTown’sWasteWise programme signed asponsorship agreement with TuffyBags to encourage schools to takeup the battle against trash in theircommunities.

The sponsorshipwill provide freebags for school cleanup events to so-me 30 schools participating in theWasteWise Eco-Schools projectacross the Cape metropole area.

On Thursday last week the agree-ment was signed at Oval North Se-condary School in Mitchells Plainwhere principal Na-eem Cassiemspoke about the need to encouragelearners in all communities to beco-me aware of their environment andthe greening of communities.

“This sponsorship encouragesour learners in all communitiesthat they must become responsible

citizens in keeping communitiesclean,” he said.

“We are a technical high schoolwhere we are hoping to produce theengineers and technicians of the fu-ture, but they must be inspired bytheir surroundings.

“The blue skies, greenery and flo-wers must inspire them to whatthey want to achieve in their workone day.

“We have already started thatprocess at this school where oureco-club is taking responsibility fortheir surroundings and influencingthe whole school to be part of thatprocess.

“Westartedagardenwhere itwasdifficult at first but we kept on withit, eventually getting the communi-ty around the school also involvedby giving them various cuttingsand plants to grow at their homes,and it is working.

“These are the building blocksthat we want to encourage with aproject like this becausewemust te-ach our children that theymust not

be deterred by the poverty fromwhich they come, but the futurewhere they are going.”

Marketing director of TuffyBrands, Rory Murray agreed withCassiem and added that this projectwas part of the company’s strategyof getting people to believe that rub-bish has value.

“Its part of a growing programmeto focus on recycling which is gro-wing into big business, but alsoplaying part in keeping communi-ties clean,” he said.

The initiative is aimed at givingschools who are part of the city’sWasteWise Eco-Schools project freebags to assist in keeping theirschool grounds and premises cleanand litter-free.

There are 32 schools that formpart of the WasteWise Eco-Schoolsproject in thewiderCapeTownareaat the moment, with more to come.

SEWENDE AANVULLENDEWAARDASIELYS TOT DIE 2009-ALGEMENEWAARDASIELYS (SV07), VIR DIE 2012/2013-BOEKJAARIngevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(i) van die Wet op Plaaslike Regering: Munisipale Eiendomsbelasting (Wet 6 of 2004), hierna die “Wet” genoem, worddaar hiermee kennis gegee dat die sewende aanvullende waardasielys van die 2009- algemene waardasielys (SV07) vir die 2012/2013-boekjaarvir die publiek by die lokale hieronder ter insae lê vanaf 21 September 2012 tot 31 Oktober 2012. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is byhierdie lokale beskikbaar. Die waardasielys is ook vanaf 21 September 2012 op die Raad se webwerf beskikbaar (adres hieronder).

Eiendomme word ingevolge artikel 78(1) van die Wet op die sewende aanvullende waardasielys van die 2009- algemene waardasielys (SV07) geplaasindien dit: a) foutiewelik uit die waardasielys gelaat is; b) na die laaste algemene waardasie by die munisipaliteit ingesluit is; c) na die laaste algemenewaardasie onderverdeel of gekonsolideer is; d) ‘n wesenlike toename of vermindering in markwaarde ondergaan het sedert die laaste algemenewaardasie; e) in die laaste algemene waardasie aansienlik verkeerd gewaardeer is; f) om enige ander buitengewone rede herwaardeer moet word; g)waarvan die kategorie verander het.

Ingevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(ii) van die Wet kan enige eiendomsbesitter of ander persoon wat wil, binne die gemelde tydperk ’n beswaar bydie munisipale bestuurder indien oor enige saak wat op die waardasielys verskyn of daaruit weggelaat is. Besware kan slegs ten opsigte vaneiendomme wat op die SV07-lys gewaardeer is, ingedien word. Die eienaars van hierdie eiendomme sal skriftelik van hul SV07-waardasies inkennis gestel word via die posadres wat tans op die Stad se databasis is.

Aandag word spesifiek gevestig op die feit dat ‘n beswaar ingevolge artikel 50(2) van die Wet met ‘n spesifieke, individuele eiendom verband moet houen nie teen die aanvullende waardasielys as ’n geheel ingedien kan word nie. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is by die lokale hieronder genoembeskikbaar en kan van die webwerf afgelaai word. ‘n Afsonderlike beswaarvorm moet vir elke eiendom ingevul word.

waaraan skryf jy dit toe?“Ek is baie, baie dankbaar vir my gehoor.

Wanneer ek ’n vertoning bymekaarsit ofvoorberei, ismy fokus in die eerste plek altydop hulle – en ek probeer hulle altyd behandelop die manier wat ek graag behandel souword as ’n gehoorlid.”2. Jy het jouself al telkemale herskep en

sodoende nuwe aanhangers bygekry.Wasjy nooit bang dat jy jou bestaande gehoorsal vervreem nie?“Ek het altyd gehoop as ek selfs my foute

Vehicle-operating companies(VOCs) and vehicle suppliers ormaintenance service providers(12-year contracts):The plan is for the VOCs to use,control or manage the buses,bus depots, parts of stations,bus lanes and staging areas of theMyCiTi service.The City proposes transferringownership of MyCiTi vehicles tothe VOCs at no cost at the end ofthe contract period, to encourageproper maintenance of these

Local rockers, Van Coke Kartel,will be among the big names onstage at Symphonic Rocks on 29September.

The band is currentlyworking ona new album, but are doing thingsa little differently this time round.“Our last release came out last

year,” says bassist, Wynand My-burgh, referring to Wie’s Bang.He points out that while they

have been active with playing, theyhave also currently been busy atBellville Studios recording andwriting new music with producer,Theo Crous.

Wynand says it is important fora band like them to be able to pro-duce a rock album of an interna-tional standard, which is why theyare working with Theo.Francois andWynand, originally

from Fokofpolisikar, are often de-scribed as pioneers of the local “Bel-lvilleRockCity” culture, a title theyboth feel honoured to carry.“Growingup inBellville,wewere

bored,” Francois says, explainingthat music was his outlet. Despitehaving moved out of the area, thegroups the two have been in havealways been strongly connected toBellville.“We were seen as the guys from

Bellville,” Francois says.

“The first CD talks about subur-bia,” Wynand says of Fokof-polisiekar’s first album, As Jy MetVuur Speel Sal Jy Brand.When asked about their favourite

acts to comeout of thenorthern sub-urbs, the boys point out aKing,Heu-wels Fantasties, Ashtray Electricand Jack Parow, but admit that it’shard to keep up with the endlessbands popping up.A huge portion of those bands

come fromBellville, or more specif-ically, DF Malan High School.Francois says he thinks this has

something to do with them havinga culture that allows for music atthe school.“It feels like they support it a bit

more,” Wynand adds.Wynand, Francois and guitarist,

Jedd Kossew, will be playing someof Van Coke Kartel’s most wellknown songs along with a 65-pieceorchestra at Symphonic Rocks atthe Grand Arena on Saturday 29September.The setting unfortunately doesn’t

allow for drummer, Jason Oosthui-zen, to be in on the action.Tickets for the show cost between

El Shaddai Christian School in Durban-ville,with a total of 70 high school girls,40 of whom play hockey, is celebratingtheir two recently announced u-18ASouth African players, Beatrix West-dyk and Tarryn Glasby.

The two girls have been coached at ElShaddai Christian School by Tracey Glas-by since 2006.

In addition to receiving SA colours forthe first time, Beatrix, a Grade 12 student,played outstanding hockey to earn the u-18IPT Goalkeeper of the Tournament awardduring the event held in Potchefstroom inJune.

She captains her school side as well asher club side. Her school’s first team playin the WP Girls’ Grand Challenge Competi-tion. Her club, Durbanville Women’s Sec-ond Team, play in the WP Women’s TownChallenge League.

Tarryn, still in Grade 11, is having an ex-tremely busy provincial season, securingplaces in both the SA u-18A and the SA u-21

Representing the South African u-21squad, Tarryn is scheduled to play for theJunior Women’s Africa Cup qualifiermatches in Randburg in October this year,in the lead up to the FIH 7th Women’s Jun-ior World Cup next year.

A third WP player, Nicole Muller, fromThe Settlers High School in Bellville, wasalso selected for the SA u-18A Team.

During the IPT, the WP u-18A side,coached by Paulene de Bruin, won theirfirst five matches against Boland, North-erns, Amathole, Peninsula and EasternProvince A to make it into the semi-finalagainst KwaZulu-Natal Coastals.

TheWPgirls had to settle for fourthplacein the IPT when they lost the 3rd/4th play-off match to Amathole 3-1.

The Airports Company South Afri-ca Strand Open, sanctioned by theInternational Tennis Federation(ITF), is part of the NEC WorldWheelchair Tennis Tour, and takesplace from 1 to 4 October at theStrand Tennis Club.

The Airports Company South Af-rica Strand Open is one of three en-try level international events host-ed in South Africa. Around 84 play-ers are expected to participate inevents, with the majority of playersbeing from the country’s regionalprogrammes.

The focus for this event, being aFuture Level Event, is to give asmany players as possible the oppor-tunity to gain world ranking points

and experience.It is the perfect environment to

introducenew talent to internation-al competitions, and provide themwith valuable competitive experi-ence.

The Open Men’s Draw is set to of-fer exciting tennis. Evans Maripa,SA’s No 1 and Nyasha Mhar-akurwa, Zimbabwe’s No 1 playerhave just returned from the 2012Paralympics where they both wontheir first rounds and lost to playersranked in the top 15 in the world.

Two teams of the Milnerton Squash Clubproved themselves worthy after finishingamong the top five in their respective divi-sions this season.

This year saw the Milnerton club enter awomen’s team in the league for the first timein four years. They competed in the fourth di-vision of the Western Province League.Despite a rocky startwhich saw them losing

their first fixture, the teamof BiancaBesener,Maureen Campbell, Linda Besener, DenisePotgieter and captained by Robyn Walkerwent on to win the league comprehensively.Themen’s first team alsomade their return

to the prestigious first division again.This team always knew it was going to be

a tough season back in the top division.During the course of the season, the home

fixtures were always well supported, and thespectators got to see some of the country’s topplayers back in action again. Most matches

were tightly contested and coming into the fi-nal fixture against Welgemoed on 5 Septem-ber, Milnerton was in sixth position on the ta-ble, with Welgemoed lying in fourth spot.Only a comprehensive win would see Mil-

nerton leapfrog UCT (fifth position) and Wel-gemoed. With the ever-vocal home groundsupport, the fixture got off to a great start forMilnerton with number four Mikhail Scha-bort winning 3-0, and number three PikkieSwanepoel winning 3-1.Number two playerMatt Marshall went the

distance in hismatchwithKobus van derVyf-er, although ahead in the fifth, he lost 3-2.The finalmatch of the evening saw local pla-

yer Gary Wheadon take on Rudi Willemse,both ranked in theSATop10.Witheverygamecritical to the final league positioning, Garycame out firing, and made short work of theslightly higher ranked Rudi. This gave Mil-nerton a 13-4 win, which saw them finish theseason in fourth position.
