vrou wreed aangerand het, gaan uiteindelikboet vir sy misdade.Die inbrekerwat ’n egpaar vanMonteVis-

ta vroeër vanjaar aangeval het, verskyn uit-eindelik ná meer as drie maande in die hofop aanklagte van moord en huisroof.Dít nadat die ondersoekbeampte dag en

nag aan die saak gewerk het.Die vermeende moordenaar wat eers Er-

nest la Grange in sy huis bewusteloos ge-slaan het, word vir moord aangekla nadatErnest drie weke later in die Panorama-hos-pitaal aan sy beserings beswyk het.Die verdagte het ook die 70-jarige Ohna la

Grange, Ernest se vrou, bygedam,waarna syin ’n plas bloed gelê het.En dít vir twee blikkies vis, ’n selfoon en

Maart het die Goodwood-polisie ’n oproepuit Arnistonweg ontvang. Dié oproep wasvan La Grange se buurman wat ’n geskreeugehoor het.

TelevisieErnest en sy vrou,Ohna, het glo vroeër die

aand televisie gekyk.Ohna het later op die bed in haar slaapka-

mer gaan lê.Dit is toé dat Ernest vermoed het daar het

iemand by sy woonwa ingebreek ná ’n ge-raas buite.Ernest het dadelik ondersoek ingestel en

’n man in die woonwa betrap.“Hy het die dief verras en is toe aangeval,”

sê ao. Wayne Theunis, polisiewoordvoerdervir Goodwood.Lynette Naude, Ernest se dogter, sê: “My

Spore gemaakDie dief het spore gemaak nadat hy Ohna

geskop en geslaan het.Daarna het die polisie ondersoek ingestel

by die La Grange-huis. Op daardie oomblikhet Ohna die voordeur oopgemaak.“My ma was in ’n dwaal. Sy weet nie eens

hoe sy bydie deuruitgekomhet nie,” sêNau-

die hospitaal,” sê Naude.Ohna is ’n paar dae later ontslaan en het

’n verklaring by die polisiekantoor gaan af-lê.Intussen het Botto inligting ontvang van

Botto en sy span het dadelik die verdagtegearresteer.

Die verdagte, wat op Maandag 8 Julie indie Goodwood-landdroshof verskyn het, issteeds in aanhouding.

Weens die positiewe selfoonrekords, vin-gerafdrukke en DNS-uitslae, is borgtog ge-weier, sê Theunis.

Die verdagte sal weer op Dinsdag 16 Juliein die hof verskyn.

“Dit is te danke aan die buurman, aan ao.Botto en die samewerking van die polisie dathierdie verdagte vasgetrek is,” sê Theunis.

Volgens Theunis sal die moord op LaGrange nie ongesiens verbygaan nie.

“Ons as familie wil graag dankie sê aan diepolisie, ER24, die Panorama-hospitaal enons familie en vriende wat ons bygestaanhet,” sluit Naude af.

Dít is hoe die 19-jarige Christelle vanBiljon op Donderdag 4 Junie met vier aan-vallers in Bellville afgereken het, toe diéhaar van haar selfoon en handsak wou be-roof. Van Biljon is deur dié mans vasge-keer nadat sy alleen van haar werk na dieM-Kem-apteek in Durbanweg gestap het.

Van Biljon, wat vir ’n rekenmeesters-maatskappy werk en in Goodwood woon,was op pad na die apteek vir ’n inspuiting.

Sy het meer as R600 in haar handsak ge-had toe sy op die hoek van John X Merri-man- en Raglanstraat oorval is.

Maar in dié geval was dit die aanvallerswat sleg tweede gekom het. “Hulle heteers suggestiewe woorde geskree en daar-na het hulle vir my gefluit,” sê Van Biljon.

Sy het vinniger geloop en het hulle “af-gejak” toe hulle nader aan haar beweeghet. “ ’n Afgeleë deel naby ’n videowinkelen ’n muur het my verhoed om verderloop. Dit is waar die mans my vasgekeerhet,” sê sy.

Een van die aanvallers het sy hand byhaar hemp ingesteek om haar selfoon tegryp. Sy het dadelik gereageer.

“Ek het hom aan sy skouers gegryp enhet hom tussen sy bene geskop,” sê sy.

Die tweede man het haar handsak ge-gryp. “Toe hy dit doen, was ek nie baiebeïndruk met hom nie. Ek het hom op dieneus geslaan en die bloed het gespat,” sêsy.

Sy beweer dat selfs nadat hulle haar met’n mes gedreig het, sy nie bang was nie.

Die ander twee aanvallers het spore ge-maak nadat hulle dié geveg aanskou het.

“Indien hulle my regtig wou aanval, souhulle my goed gevat het, maar hulle het

alles net so gelos.” Van Biljon is ná dieaanval na die apteek waar sy vir 30 minu-te gewag het. “Ek moes kalmeer. Die skokvan die gebeure het my eers na die tyd ge-tref.”

Die sekerheidswagte wat by ’n selfoon-winkel werk, het ná die voorval die omlig-gende omgewing deursoek vir die aanval-lers. “Hulle was nêrens te vinde nie. Ekhet ook besluit dit is nie die moeite werdom die saak by die polisie aan te meld nie.Hulle gooi net hierdie sake uit, en ek kanmyself mos verdedig,” sê sy.

Ao. Wayne Theunis van die Goodwood-polisiekantoor sê egter: “Enige saak worddeur die polisie ondersoek en die hof salbesluit of die saak verder moet gaan. Men-se moet die saak aanmeld en die polisiedie kans gee om die verdagtes op te spoor.As ’n verdagte vandag wegkom, sal hymôre ook met dieselfde daad probeer weg-kom.”

’n Paartjie van Parow-Wes se grootste nag-merrie het onlangs waar geword toe dieweverlede week by hul woonplek ingebreek enverskeie van hul kosbare besittings gesteelhet.Die paartjie trou hierdie Saterdag volgens

alles uitgegooi.“Ons vermoed die diewe het by die slaap-

kamervenster ingekom,” sê Joubert.Hy sê die polisie het hul verklarings kom

neem en die plek gefynkam vir vingeraf-drukke.“Ons het net daar in trane uitgebarstoe ons besef daar is ingebreek. Ons is noubaie gestres en gaan beslis diefwering en ’nalarm moet installeer,” sê Joubert.Volgens hom is hul gesteelde trouringe

baie uniek. “Dis replikas van die Lord of theRings-flieks se ringe.‘Mynaamen ons troudatum (13 Julie 2013)

is in Martin se ring gegraveer, en sy naamen die datum in myne,” sê Joubert.

Een van die paartjie se ringe – ’n replika vandie Lord of the Ringsflieks se ringe. Diepaartjie het dit spesiaal van Amerika af laatinvoer. Dit is aan die binnekant gegraveer.

The Green Merchant non-profit organi-sation carries a serious message – onethat bringshope to families fromBoth-

asig and surrounds in search of a new be-ginning.“Our project is not about a quick fix but

about providing people with sustainabili-ty,” says Bronson Vos, founder of TheGreen Merchant.The organisation consists of a handful of

volunteers who sustain and develop an ur-ban piece of land.Thiswill be used to produce food and sup-

ply shelter and work for retrenched fami-lies.The organic farm,where fruit andvegeta-

bles will be planted, is based in Bothasig.From here the offset will be sold to resi-

dents in Bothasig, Richwood, Edgemead,Plattekloof and Tygerberg to name but afew.

Low costAt this stage the farm is still in its first

production phase, so for the next sixmonths various other organic farmers willsupply the Green Merchant with fresh pro-duce.The plan is to provide a low cost solution

to produce foodwhile giving families a newfoot to start off with.“As part of our strategy to get to know the

families in need, we will have a very firstcommunityoutreach inBothasig,wherewewould like to invite these struggling fami-lies to come and join in on the day,” Vossays.However, this will not be another soup

hand-out but an opportunity for families toshare their triumphs and tragedies.The farm will not only produce food for

many but also a happy family home forsome.Retrenched workers will be able to apply

for an eco-shack at the Green Merchant infuture.Women and children will enjoy prefer-

ence and will be given shelter and foodwhile they work on the farm.

InspirationalThey are working in collaboration with

Mitchell’s Missions, an organisation help-ing kids and adults to beat their drug addic-tion by providing themwith shelter and as-sisting them with the road ahead. Accord-ing to Vos these organisations are theleaders teaching struggling families aboutliving healthy and inspirational lives.“So many families buckle in times of fi-

nancial strain, commitments, or job cutsand are unable to recover,” he adds.While empowering the community they

want to encourage schools, church groups,businesses and general households to be ac-countable for the environment and theirwaste so as to contribute to a greener andbetter lifestyle.Furthermore, Jacqueline Esterhuyse-

Smit,marketingmanager says: “Themodelserves as an example for integration in oth-er areas in South Africa for the rehabilita-tion of people back into society.”The Green Merchant is planning to run

TLC Outreach Projects, a beacon oflight in the Table View community,has been recognised for their tirelessefforts in enriching the communityfor all its inhabitants.The NPO recently received the Ap-

preciation Award from the City ofCape Town’s Social Developmentand Early Childhood DevelopmentDirectorate at a ceremony in Good-wood. The city is extremely gratefulfor the role that TLC has played insuccessfully bettering the communi-ty.Says Colleen Pietersen, founder of

this NPO: “It’s wonderful to have re-ceived the award and we are veryhappy. However, what makes meeven happier are the ongoingachievements of the students.”For the last 16 years the organisa-

tion has dedicated itself to caring forimpoverished youths in rural and in-formal settlements. They currentlyoperate in seven settlements inTableView and surrounding areas, provid-ing aid through feeding schemes, ed-ucation programmes and social out-reaches.The organisation is committed to

uplifting the community socially, bymeans of skills development. Thenew skills development centre ad-dresses the needs of displaced per-sons holistically and places them inlong term training programmes, theultimate goal of which is to createproductive citizens.Johan van den Berg, chairman of

A service honouring the uniformed mem-bers of the greater community was recent-ly held at the New Faith Church in Good-wood.The service was organised by Maurisha

formed services thatwere present includedthe South African Police Service (SAPS),correctional services, the city emergencyservices and military staff.Some of the senior ranking officials who

led by Reverend Jerome Campher.He says Rev Campher paid tribute to the

efforts of the uniformed services who en-sure the safety of Cape Town’s residents,either in their crime-fighting capacity or inthe provision of emergency services to thecommunities in which they operate.“He (Rev Campher) also cautioned

against allowing a culture of entitlement todevelop where the efforts of these servicesare taken for granted,” says Justus.

South African Young Falcon learners willreceive training at Ysterplaat and the navalbase in Simon’s Town during the comingdays.Aside from high-calibre training, the ob-

jective of the Combined Aviation Youth De-velopment Programme is to build partner-ships and enhance co-operation between thespecific air forces.The UK Cadets and the Young Falcons

comprise youngsterswho showa keen inter-est in aviation, and could potentially jointheir respective air acadamies in the future.Says programme manager Lt Col Chris

Oosthuizen: “It came through the BritishHighCommission that this groupwould liketo come and visit us and we started organis-ing it as early as last year. This is the firsttime in history that the Young Falcon Pro-gramme has combined with the UK Air Ca-det Programme.”According to him one of the main reasons

whyCape Townwas chosen as one of the des-tinations was for the youngsters to learnabout the maritime environment throughthe South African Navy.Squadron Leader and camp commandant

of the UK Cadets, Michael Perrins, elabo-

rates further: “The Royal Air Force Cadetsoperates all over the UK. There are about50 000 cadets in an established structure thatgoes back quite a few decades. We attendcamps all over the UK, but some of us ar-range overseas camps if and when we can.The concept was to target South Africa, be-ing the second oldest air force in the worldafter the RAF. There is also naturally a

strong link between South Africa and theUK.” He adds that the response from theSouth African contingent was “exemplaryand fantastic”.Along with the Cadets, 46 Young Falcons

the chance to “Adopt a Park” as part of thelocal council’s Love, Own and Improveyour Street initiative.

The aim of this project is for residents toactively participate by cleaning up theirparks.

The plan forward was discussed at acouncil meeting on Thursday 20 Junewhere representatives of City Parks gave apresentation.

Jurie Swart from the City parks depart-ment says unemployed people staying adja-cent to the parks will have the first opportu-nity to tender their services in maintainingthe parks.

“The project is already in place and willbe changed according to the needs of thecommunity. There are many jobless peoplewho are looking for an income,” he says.

The Parks Department will pay the suc-cessful tender a monthly stipend and will

also supply proper training and equipmentin order for the candidates to perform theirduties.

These duties include cleaning up litter,keeping the gardens neat, as well as keepingan eye on the safety of children at the site.

Clive Justus, Subcouncil Chairman, saysthere is unanimous support for this projectand adds that consideration is being givento appointing a manager of the Adopt a Parkinitiative. The manager will co-ordinatethis project across the City of Cape Townso as to ensure consistency in the stipula-tions established for the project.

A regular report-back session to thecouncil will be made in September wherethe progress of the initiative at all the ma-jor parks in Subcouncil 4 will be assessed.

The decision (dated25 June 2013) and the conditions for authorisation, as well as reasons forthe decision are attached to this letter of notification, and are alsoavailable for download onwww.savannahsa.com.
