A Woman from Goodwood sufferingfrom a form of motor neurone disease(MNS) has laid a complaint with the

South African Human Rights Commission(SAHRC) against a security guard at the N1CityMall after shewasallegedly treatedbad-ly by the man.

Michelle Pillay (49) suffers from Fried-reich’s ataxia, a milder form of the diseaseformer Springbok captain Joost van derWesthuizen suffers from.

This causes her to use crutches to preventher from falling. For this reason shedisplaysa disability sign onher car andparks in disa-

bility bays when she goes shopping. This ledto the recent unsavoury incident at themall.

“I was parking as usual when this manfrom the security company approached me.He askedmewhy Iwas parking in a disabili-ty bay when he cannot see what is wrongwith me. I showed him my disk, but he wasadamant that I was not disabled. When heasked me to show him my disability I toldhim that he was not a doctor,” says Pillay,who was declared medically unfit afterworking for a bank for 20 years.

The man, whose name is known to Tyger-Burger, warned her that her car will beclamped because he didn’t believe she hada disability. “A man who usually sees me atthe mall came to my rescue and told the oth-

er man that I was indeed allowed to parkthere,” recounts Pillay.

Her humiliation did not end there, shesays.

“I went to see the mall management buthad towalkup three flights of stairs, one stepat a time.

“I met with Michael Stow, operationsmanager of themall, and they could see Iwasin a terrible state andwas crying. Theywereobviously very disturbed by the incidentand apologised. After they calmed me downthey went with me to the car.”

Stow sent Pillay an email saying they hadspoken to the security companyabout the in-cident. “Whilst the parking guards are notemployed by N1 City Mall we have held

meetings with the company and securityguard and have also addressed a letter tothem advising them that the mall will nottolerate any insensitivity or similar behav-iour to its patron’s or shoppers.Wehave alsoonce again impressed upon them the impor-tance of ensuring that our processes, proce-dures and expectations in respect of their in-teraction with our patrons and shoppers areat all times adhered to,” Stow wrote.

Pillay wrote back saying she was not hap-py with the email. “I am shocked and disap-pointed with the lack of compassion in yourletter. There is nomention of the consequen-ces to (the accused) regardinghis unaccepta-ble verbal abuse.

Learners atRiversideCollege inBurgun-dy Estate had “babies” to teach themabout the responsibilities of being par-ents.Learners from Grade 8 to 12 took part

in the project in which they carriedaround 2,5kg bags of flour which repre-sented their infants.The bags of flour were carried around

by the learners and they also took themhome. Instructions were sent via SMSand the learner had to reply to confirmthat he or she has taken care of the baby.School principal Dave Swart says the

project was designed to simulate the reallife unpredictability of caring for babies.“Babies don’t cry or get sick according

to a schedule. By using text messagesthatwere sent at random times, we couldreplicate a real life scenario – the noveltyof having a new born baby quicklywearsoff when it’s waking you up for a feed at3:00 and then again at 4:30 because it hascolic,” says Swart.Learners at the school say the experi-

ence has shown themhowbig a responsi-bility a baby is.“This project was a realistic simula-

tion of having a real baby. It was a goodexperience to show how our lives are af-fected byhaving a baby in school.Not on-

ly did it affect our study life but also ourrecreational life. I will keep that experi-ence for some time in the distant future,”said Grade 12 learner Mickey Kruger.Thimna Rapiya, another Grade 12

Difference Thru Sport (DTS) in Parow Val-ley has applied to register as a non-profit or-ganisation which will allow them to applyfor funding and sponsorships.In the meantime, this community-run or-

ganisation is going from strength tostrength, although almost no moneychanges hands, thanks to the enthusiasticvolunteers teaching a growing group of un-derprivileged children sport and life skills.“We recently hosted a five-a-side soccer

tournament andachieved amajor objective:to get different leaders from neighbouringareas and similar community projects to-gether,” said DTS founder Ricky Vigeland.“We are all struggling, so we said: ‘Let’s

connect and seehowwecanstrengtheneachother’. These are people I connectedwith onFacebook and they all came,”Vigeland said.More than a hundred children and 11

teams from Leonsdale, Brooklyn, Riverton,Ruyterwacht, Cloetesville and the JoubertStreet side of Parow took part in the tourna-ment to conquer an intercommunity tro-phy, which will be competed for regularlyfrom now on.This time, the Riverton team were the

winners.DTS already has a junior and senior

league soccer team, and also offers dancing,cricket, karate and kick-boxing training.“Because of this event, others became in-

terested. They want to take part because itis structured,” Vigeland says.On 30MayDTSwill host a basketball clin-

ic presented by Cape Town Basketball.The clinic will consist of an introduction

to the rules and skills of basketball, followedby matches.

incident. “N1 City Mall management con-firms that onMonday 20 April, a patronwhohad parked in one of the centre’s disabledparking bays was approached by a parkingpersonnel employed by an independent cus-tomer assistance company. During thistime, the validity of the customer’s disabili-ty stickerwasqueried.N1CityMall has, sub-sequent to the incident,made enquirieswiththe independent customer assistance com-pany, who has advised that the relevant pa-trondidhold the correct parkingpermit.Un-fortunately the centre has seen an increasein incidents where people who are not eligi-ble to park in these disabled bays do so thusmaking them unavailable for those in need.N1 City Mall has addressed this matter withthe company and reiterated to them its pro-

tocols and procedures in respect of the useof disabled parking bays,” says Natalie Dip-penaar, marketing manager of the centre.

.Thiswas the second incident in less than12 months where a disabled person wastreated badly at the centre.In November last year Mohammed Gor-

don (25) was waiting for his parents in themall’s parking lot when hewasmistaken fora car thief. Security and police pulled himfrom the car and allegedlymanhandled him.His father, Johardien, is suing thepolice, thesecurity company, the head of security, aswell as N1 City.

Michelle Pillay was rattled after a securityguard did not believe her when she told himshe was disabled.

Moerieda Morat, voorsitter van Cup, sêhulle probeer hard om ’n verskil in die le-wens van inwoners te maak, maar kry niehulp van die regering af nie.

“Dit is reeds 21 jaar sedert daar ’n demo-kratiese bestel in die land gekom het, maarsteeds sukkel mense met basiese goed. Hieris nie een regeringskantoor naby nie. Virelke klein dingetjie moet daar êrens andersgegaan word en dit kos geld. In Ruyter-wacht is baie bejaardes en arm mense, sohulle het nie altyd die vermoë om by rege-ringskantore uit te kom nie,” sê Morat.

cases of theft in which the suspects are do-mestic workers or gardeners.

The items that are stolen are usuallysmall valuables which could only be mis-sed in the long run as they are not usedon a daily basis.

According to Warrant Officer JacquesMostert, what makes the cases difficult tosolve is that the employer does not haveany information except their names.

“In most of these cases the employerdoes not know the surname or the residen-tial address of the employee. This is some-times also the problem when a person hasbeen working for a long time and was re-

ferred by word of mouth. Residents are re-quested to ensure that they obtain a copyof the employee’s identity book and wherepossible, proof of address and a photo-graph of the employee.”

A photograph of the identity book canalso be taken with a cellular phone if itcannot be photocopied. “Ensure that theinformation on the photo is legible. Thisinformation should be kept in a safe placewhere it can be accessed when necessary,”says Mostert.

He also says picking up workers waitingnext to the road could also be risky as itcould sometimes be criminals pretendingto be workers.

The reason beingthat there was at least a 75%chance that you would be‘caught’ resulting in seriousrepercussions. Livestockwandering on a nationalhighway would be impoundedif not eliminated in the inter-est of not endangering humanlife. I remember delaying a tripplanned on a Saturday to aMonday as I could not get atail light on my car to work. IfI had not done so there wasagain a 75% chance that Iwould have been caught andwould have suffered seriousconsequences.

We are a country with ahigh unemployment rate.Please consider creatingemployment opportunities byputting sufficient numbers of(uncorrupted) law enforcementofficers on the road with theright authority/power to dealwith undisciplined users. Whatis the point of displaying a100km/hr sticker on the backof your overloaded publicvehicle and travelling at140km/hr on a freeway in thefast lane and then suddenlybraking to veer off to the leftto stop and allow passengers todisembark on the same free-way? If the people ‘designing’these draft regulations havenot experienced this or similarissues perhaps they are not theright people in charge of thedepartment.

I have dealings with thesepeople, the so called foreigners,or “aliens” as they are calledhere. I found them to be veryintelligent and cultured. Myhusband and I have assistedone such a person for almost ayear. This guy had to flee hiscountry because he reportedmisconduct of a high official inhis country and received deathtreads. He has been here forthree years and in that timehas spent about R10 000 tryingto get the required documenta-tion, which he has still notreceived.

Because of this situation hehas to duck and dive from theimmigration and undoubtedlywill be sent back to his countryshould he be caught. He can’tfind a job. His wife was denieda job too and was told by asenior official that she is notwelcome here. The same thinghappened to her husband, whowent to work and was told “wedon’t want you here, We willkill you”.

These people are beinghunted down, harassed andinsulted.

I find this very sad andupsetting seeing that numberone in the country said “all areone” and welcome.

This man is an upstandingman with outstanding charac-ter. What can be done for him?The mystery is why were theyallowed in the country in thefirst place?

A family is diagnosed with childhoodcancer, not just the child.These are the words of Vanessa Ver-

maak, Western Cape regional manager ofCHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA.CHOC is one of the three beneficiaries of

this year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can!charity concert, takingplace at the endof Ju-ly. TygerBurger is the event media sponsor.CHOC was established in 1979 when a

group of parents with children sufferingfromcancer and other life-threatening blooddisorders decided to start a support group.In the 36 years since, CHOC has grown in-

to a country-wide charity that looks after theemotional andpractical needs of entire fami-lies where children are diagnosed with can-cer, without any government support.CHOC is involved with the whole family

from the diagnosis of cancer until the out-come, which, if detected early, is completelycured in 85% of cases.“We take as much stress off the family as

possible,” says Vermaak.“Treatment is a very long process and in

the majority of the families one of the par-ents will lose their job in order to be withthe sick child,” she says.“In Cape Town we work mostly with the

academically linked hospitals: Tygerberg,Red Cross and Groote Schuur, because theyhave paediatric oncology units, so we do notneed funding for medication. But often afamily will be sent here from as far as theEastern Cape for tests and the doctor will di-agnose the child and say: ‘you have cancerand you have to start treatment today’. Thatfamily is completely unprepared. They comeherewith nothing and then they have to stayfor at least three to six months.”CHOC owns ten houses and three lodges

throughout South Africa where children

and a parent can stay forthe duration of treatment.Everything that comeswith the lodging is free,from food and toiletries tohospital transport andprogrammes with thechildren and parents.CHOC in Cape Town

alone has a R3.8 millionannual budget, but likeany charity they still haveto go out and raise money,Vanessa says.“We get funding from

ordinary people, localbusinesses and schoolsthat support us and thishas been going on for 36years, this is what kept usgoing, but we constantlyhave to cut back on pro-jects to make ends meet.”CHOC gets some Lotto

funding to cover salaries, rent and petrol.“So every cent the public gives us goes di-

rectly to the families and the treatment cen-tres and educational and awareness pro-grammes,” Vanessa says.She says many projects had to be cut back

seriously in the new financial year due tobudget constraints.Early detection is essential, which is why

CHOC emphasises awareness programmes.“In the last two weeks we lost five chil-

dren. This weekwe had to send a child homebecause it was too late to do anything.“The majority of deaths are unnecessary.

If it was caught early enough it could havebeen cured and that is what frustrates us.”In SouthAfrica one in 600 children is diag-

nosed before the age of 16, but according toVanessa, that is only half the children thatshould be diagnosed.Because the symptoms are so similar to

other diseases it is often missed. For manyyears, the basic symptoms of childhood can-cer were not included in the nursing diplo-ma or basic medical degree.“So we have thousands of doctors in this

country that do not know what to look for.”In the last three years CHOC has trained

11 000 medical professionals and 3 000 tradi-tional healers on basic warning signs andwhat to dowhenyou spot them.Themessageto parents is to trust your intuition when achild is not well.She says the image of a little white child

with no hair and a bandana is just not thereality of childhood cancer. Instead, the ill-ness is completely representative of theSouth African population.This disease levels you. You are the same

as anybody else, it does not discriminate be-tween race and economic status. It just ran-dom it will affect anybody,” she says.

Grade 3learners fromGoodwood ParkPrimary, KoosSadie Primaryand Ruyter-wacht Pre-Pri-mary wereasked to water,feed and care for their own tomato plant –the aim being to grow the biggest plant andultimately win a prize.

The Cangro project proved a success,with learners putting in the effort to growhuge plants. At the end of the period, tenfinalists were chosen from each school, andfeatured in TygerBurger, the project’s offi-cial media partner. These pictures were inturn displayed at N1 City Mall over theschool holidays and the public voted fortheir favourite.

It was the perfect way to get the inauguralFNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN off theground. A dip on the finish line and miss-

ing the world’s best by one second.Kenya’s Emmanuel Bett and Daniel Salel

fought to the finish line with the decision,after much deliberation, going the way ofBett in a time of 33 minutes and 32 seconds(33:32). Salel recorded the same time.In near perfect conditions, the race got un-

derway in Milnerton at 9:00. The country’stop 10 men and women were competingagainst the likes of Daniel Salel, EmmanuelBett, Moses Kipsiro and Vivian Cheruiyot.Within the first 2km it was evident this

was to be a hard and fast race. EmmanuelBett, who has run a 27:51:16 over 10 000m,was in no mood for a bunch finish and seta blistering pace from the start. Within 2kmthe lead group of twenty plus had been whit-tled down to eight, with Bett setting the paceand Salel running next to him with Kipsiro,Timothy Toroitich , Elroy Gelant, GladwinMzazi and Lucky Mohale sitting on theirtails.By 3kmMohalehadbeenblownaway.Bett

continued to race at 2:47/km (2 minutes 47seconds) pace which saw first GladwinMza-zi drop off (around 4km just before the raceentered the harbour). Gelant was to fadefrom the leading pack shortly thereafter,and when Kipsiro dropped just before the

halfway mark, it was down to three.Bett was not going to slow down despite

the onset of nausea at around the 6kmmark.As they entered Government Avenue at thetop of Adderley Street (9km), there was still

no splitting Toroitich, Salel and Bett. The10km mark was passed in 27:48 and the racefor a world record was on.Not even the short but sharp climb up

Buitengracht Street separated the trio, but

the climb lost the leaders some valuable sec-onds as they chased the record and huntedfor the win.With just over 1km to go, Bett and Salel

upped the pace and Toroitich fell off. Therace for first place went to the line as bothSalel andBettwere awarded the time of 33:32– just one second off the world record, theofficials giving Bett the nod.Timothy Toroitich finished third and Mo-

ses Kipsiro fourth, with the first South Afri-can home being Elroy Gelant in fifth.“I’m very happy with my run today,” said

Bett. “I have had some injury problems inthe last few years, so this show’s me I’m ingood shape and getting back to where I was.I will be competing in the Prefontaine Clas-sic on 30 May in the 10 000m and then theKenyan trials. Iwant to qualify for theWorldChampionships”.Gelant was ecstatic after his fifth place.

“My hamstring is now all good. This was ahard race. The Kenyans were really flying,but I am very happy”.The women’s race saw four-time world

champion and Olympic silver and bronzemedallist Vivian Cheruiyot break away justbefore half way.She crossed the line in 38:32. Yenenesh Ti-

lahun of Ethiopiawas second (39:17)withLe-bo Phalula the first South African home in(39:21).
