The Cape TownHigh Court ruledon Friday that the eight Ruyter-wacht families who were evictedtwo weeks ago from their Com-municare houses in Ruyter-wacht can return to their homes.

The attorney representing thepeople of Ruyterwacht and secre-tary of the Ruyterwacht Tenants’Committee, John Adams, workedinto the small hours of the morning

to see that justice was served. The threats of evictions have

been coming for months, but onWednesday 19 September, they be-gan in earnest.

Eight families were “put out onthe street” with no plan put in placefor where they should sleep thatnight.

Their friends and family offeredalternative places to sleep and onthe Thursday when it rained, theCity of Cape Town managed to or-ganise a place where the families’

belongings could be stored.Ward councillor Michael Britz

and Councillor Cedric Thomas acti-vated disaster management andthis unit, along with the city and theprovince’s Department of Social De-velopment offered help where theycould.

“It shows we’re a city that cares,”explains Thomas.

Be this as it may, the eviction it-self was something those who it in-volved would like to forget.

One person who was evicted and

wishes to stay anonymous feels itwas done in an undignified mannerand that it was one of the most trau-matic moments in her life.

She also alleged that she receivedno prior notice of eviction.

Communicare, the Section 21company that owns a large portionof Ruyterwacht and rents it out tolow-income households, has been atloggerheads with some residentsfor a very long time.

Joel Mkunqwana, Social Housingand Community Development di-

. From page 1.The residentwho sawaneed of represen-

tation for the community, John Adams, in-sists however that those who are threat-enedwith eviction are up to datewith theirrent and that the costs which Communi-care claim are outstanding are actually le-gal costs.“Residents are, in effect, paying to take

themselves to court,” says Adams. The legal battle between the community

and Communicare has been going formonths and as yet there seems to be nolight at the end of the tunnel for either par-ty.Adams, who himself is apparently sup-

posed to be evicted from his home in Ru-yterwacht, continues: “Every year at thesame time they try to evict residents. This

time Communicare used 2011 eviction let-ters.” Thiswas according to him, one of thereasons why the court decided to give theevicted residents 60 more days of relativesecurity in their homes. But Mkunqwana insists that the recent

evictions were related to late rental fees.“Communicare has formal rental agree-

mentswith their tenantswhich outline therespective roles and responsibilities ofboth landlord and tenant. Tenants shouldcontact their area office as soon as they ex-perience difficulty in paying their rent sothat we can review their situations and of-fer help. To assist tenants who fall on hardtimes we support different relief pro-grammes. There are right-sizing and offerindigent grants or housing benefit allow-ances to genuine cases of hardship or af-

fordability, which allows us to reduce rent-al charges per month. This is in effect foran initial period of threemonths whilst weassist the affected tenant to meet afforda-bility challenges.”Poverty alleviation programmes and so-

cial development services are being of-fered by Communicare, so Mkunqwanastates clearly: “We cannot tolerate instanc-es where our clients choose to unreasona-bly ignore above prescriptions which aremeant to alleviate affordability problemsto their benefit.“Proper collection of rental is one of the

key requirements of an accredited socialhousing institution as legislated withinthe South African housing context if onewill be able to sustain its continuous provi-sion of affordable rental opportunities.”

Capt Pierre Jordaan is a policeman withhis eye on the ball way beyond his crime-fighting duties.

Working as the communications officer atElsies River SAPS, Jordaan from Bracken-fell is one of the top snooker players in thecountry, and is still pocketing those ballswith the best of them.Currently he is ranked number one in

South Africa and with a little help will beheading off to take part in theWorld Champi-onships in Bulgaria later this year. The jovial policeman is well known in the

community for his involvement with crime-fighting projects and working with youth inempowerment projects, but confesses thatsnooker is his other passion in life.He laughs when he remembers that he ac-

tually started playing when he was seven.“We lived in Joubert Park in Johannes-

burg and I learnt to play at after-care on aquarter-sized table,” he says.“The teacher’s name was Miss Ray, that’s

all I remember but I loved playing eversince.”Since then he has achieved some good ti-

tles under his belt that included winning theGoodwood Championships in 1988, the WPJunior Title, but he confesses that there arestill some titles that allude him evenwith histop ranking.“Sometimes I take things too easy in the

big games, but that is justmy temperament,”he confesses.“If you look at my records youwill also see

that I have been the WP runner-up seventimes, four times in the SA Classic, as wellas in the SA open.“It just happens but I still enjoy playing

and I’m always positive that the big break isgoing to be there for me one day.”His achievements in recent years speak for

themselves with him winning the BolandOpen earlier this year, fourth in the All-Afri-ca tournament where he compiled the high-est break and he has represented the policeat five World Police and Fire Games over-seas.This year will mark the fourth time that

he is chosen for the World Champs and heis very proud to represent his country, butthere are financial aspects that may keephim from attending.“Only a portion of our travelling expenses

are paid for. The rest we have to fund our-selves or find sponsors,” he says.“Unfortunately I do not have the extra

money that is needed ... ”For more information Jordaan can be con-

Die gaping tussen rykdom en armoede wordal hoe groter – teen só ’n tempo dat meer enmeer Suid-Afrikaners jaarliks in armoedegedompel is.Een organisasie wat begrip het vir dié

A student from Stellenbosch brought itback home with a workshop at MarianHigh recently.

Shannon Lambrechts, currently studyingfor his BSc inMicrobiology andBiotechnolo-gy, is originally fromClarke Estatewhere heattended Clarke Primary. He recently proved that he has not forgot-

ten his roots when he was part of a projectthat was hosted at Marian High by the 2012South Africa-Washington International Pro-gram (SAWIP) on Saturday 8 September. This project that involves students from

the universities of Stellenbosch, Cape Townand UWC is helping to inspire, prepare andsupport South African youth to lead a sus-tainable democracy with a peaceful andprosperous future for all its citizens.Lambrechts explained that this year the

group held three formal meetings to discussand decide on a viable community serviceproject.“In each meeting, members presented

their project proposals to the group for con-sideration. As a group, we agreed that ourproject should be driven by two fundamentalprinciples, youth development and account-ability,” he said.

“After several lengthy discussions, we de-cided to merge the two main ideas, which fo-cused on three key aspects, skills develop-ment, refurbishing a high school library, and government accountability.“Marian High was chosen to have their li-

brary refurbished and considering wherethe school is located we implemented ourskills development andgovernment account-ability projects there.”In theareaof skills development, thegroup

hosted a very successful series of workshopsthat concentrated on CV writing, businessplan development, writing skills and assist-ance with university applications. The workshop even attracted some adults

from the community. When it came to the library Lambrechts

said that their vision for the librarywas two-fold.“Firstly, it is to provide learners access to

educational material in the form of text-books, fiction and non-fiction books, and vis-ual materials.“Secondly, we wished to create more than

a mere physical space filled with books. Wehope to create a space that inspires learningand a reading culture among the learners.“We envision the school library as a vital

instrument in the education process, not asa separate entity,” he said.

Twosocialwork students areworkingonmaking some special learners at a schoolin Belhar, extra special.

Mxolisi Mangxola and Adrian Seherriefrom the University of theWestern Cape arecurrently doing their practicals at the OasisSpecial School in Belhar.“This is a school for severely mentally

challenged learners,” said Mangxolo.“As part of our practicals, we are organis-

ing a fundraising and awareness project onWednesday 17 October to assist the school toaddress the dire educational needs of thelearners.“Many of the learners come from the sur-

rounding extremely impoverished commu-nity. Sincemany of the learners are often ex-cluded from mainstream society, the focus

of the project is to create an awareness aboutsocial inclusion.“We will also address the following fac-

tors; teenage pregnancies, and HIV/Aids,which may cause social exclusion.”Mangxolo added that they would be invit-

ing many of the key stakeholders that facili-tate awareness programmes on HIV/Aids,schools, nurses and social workers of thecommunity to participate in the project.“We would like as many people from the

surrounding communities to be a part of thisproject to showour learners that the commu-nity cares about them.“Part of our appeal is also that we would

appreciate any consumables as donationssuch as cool drinks, sugar, tea, biscuits, cof-fee, milk, sweets, paper plates and cups.”Further information about the event from

the school on 021 952 2100, or emailMangxolaat [email protected].

Pushing social inclusion

The Belhar Principals’ Forum are playing their part in supporting the Oasis Special Schoolby helping to raise funds for the school, and to make the community aware of the plight ofthe disabled in the community. They recently handed over a cheque for R10 280 to the schoolas part of their ongoing support. June Hamman and Robin Reid are seen here getting thecheque from chairman of the forum, Kevin Sonn, with some of the principals in the forum,(from left) Andy Josephus (Belvue Primary), Owen April (Accordion Primary), Jonathan Henkeman (Principal Oasis) and Ralph Talmarkes (Perserverance High). speaking skills, leadership and self-confi-dence will encourage and inspire others tojoin Toastmasters,” continued Holman.“Her personal and professional achieve-

ment will inspire others to step out of theircomfort zone and make a difference in thecommunity of Bellville South and surround-ing areas.“We want people from all areas to take up

the challenge and we will be there for themto help them set up their own clubs whenev-er and whever it is needed.”Siemens Toastmasters Club meets every

An important partnership inmobile com-municationwill be benefiting young peo-ple in the community.

Keep the Dream 206 is a cross racial, cul-tural and religious organisation that hasbeen operating in the Delft and surroundingareas since 2003, offering the youth at riskof the areas an alternative to drugs, teenagesex and pregnancies, abuse, alcoholism, gangsterism and most of the negative influ-ences that penetrate our communityonadai-ly basis.

They are now set for greater achievementswith their partnership with Uronimo, a mo-bile media platform that enables virtuallyeveryuserworldwide to enjoya superiormo-bile experience and receive any form of digit-al content on their mobile device, regardlessof the type of phone, network or carrier.

Margo Lawrence of Keep the Dream saidthat what initially attracted Uronimo’s at-tention to the plight of the organisation wasthe possibility of the institution possibly be-ing forced to close its doors, unless much-needed funding was made available.

“It is for this reason that Uronimo ZA hasagreed to a partnership with us,” she said.

“There is undoubtedly a great need for so-cial development in South Africa and with

technology of this nature we are able to pro-vide this institution and others with assist-ance through mobile advertisements to as-sist with the raising of funds.”

She pointed out that this initiative will en-able them to continue their work in the com-munity where instead of the negatives, theywarn the youth about the dangers of HIV andAids, anger, crime, rape, teenage pregnan-cies, etc, and offer them dancing, singing, art, poetry, sport, and life skills.

“Through our programmes we motivatethem to complete and further their educa-tion. We say that without education, there isno liberation.

“We also run a programme called TakingCharge which is a concept that has been de-signed to be used as an early interventionpreventative model relating to the negativesthat penetrate our youth at risk on a dailybasis.

“Through this programme the youth aretaught preventative measures and how tocope with peer pressure and temptations.”

Dance also plays a big part in their activi-ties. “Currently dance is the foremost pro-gramme and our dancers have performed atmany of the big stages in Cape Town,” shecontinued.

For more information Lawrence can becontacted on 072 703 9948, or email [email protected].

sake onderling uitspook, waarnadie afdelingwenners deurdring nadie eindronde. – (Sarel Burger)
