The event, hosted at Hindle Road High, was the culmination of Blankets for Blik- kies/Brei vir Blikkies, a special project started in September last year. Kharnita Mohamed from the project ex- plained that the idea came from Sandra Mar- ais who was involved in a number of projects in the area as part of the Blue Bus Communi- ty Ministry based at the school. “She had learnt that people had died of cold in Blikkiesdorp during the 2014 win- ter,” says Kharnita. “I am an avid knitter so Sandra asked me to teach the women in Blikkiesdorp to knit blankets, for which we would supply wool and needles. “We were joined by Elna Engelbrecht, a veteran octogenarian knitter a few weeks later, who most weeks brought baked goods or some hot soup and good cheer in winter. “Every Friday morning Elna, Sandra and myself go to Blikkiesdorp with the wool we managed to source that week. “As it turned out, we didn’t need to do much teaching as many of the women could knit and are now also teaching myself and others to crochet.” Kharnita was quick to point out that the function on Saturday was not the end of the project. “Our work is not finished here,” she said. “The women in Blikkiesdorp are some of the most beautiful, strong human beings we have had the privilege of meeting. “Every week we are awed by the courage they display and deeply humbled. For two hours every week we laugh and share stories and knit and crochet blankets. “The first blanket is for the knitter herself and every blanket she knitted thereafter was donated to someone in Blikkiesdorp on Man- dela Day.” She also added that the project was about more than keeping people warm. “The women have reported that the act of knitting and crochet have helped to relieve the stress caused by poverty and violence,” she said. “They said the group provides a space for support, friendship and a feeling of commu- nity. Additionally, making a blanket for someone else makes them feel really good. “It was our hope that this project wouldlead to everyday feelings of empowermentand transform Blikkiesdorp residents’lives in other ways.We have seen thatmak-ing it possible for the women to do some-thing for their community themselves hashad personal and social benefits.”There are about 30 women who form the

core group of knitters but the number fluc-tuates from week to week. However, theycould use some assistance to expand thegroup.“We are steadily attracting more women

and have moved to two conjoined contain-ers this year,” said Kharnita.“This is where we need help because the

containers have been vandalised and re-quire windows, doors, some aluminiumsheets for the roof and something for thefloors, aswell as other resources thatwouldmake it a comfortable user-friendly com-munity space.“Because many of the women bring their

children to the group, we would also like adedicated play and story area for the chil-dren. Any assistance in this regard wouldbe much appreciated.”Kharnita also explained that since start-

ing the initiativetheyhave receivedwool ordonations and visits from individuals whohave come into contact with the project invarying ways.“We struggle to consistently supply

enoughwool and supplies.Wewould dearlyappreciate if sponsors can assist us withfunding or donations of wool or any otheritems such as knitting needles, crochet nee-dles, stitch markers and so forth.“Another dream that we have is to take

thewomenon a group outing to a yarn storeand give each woman a budget that wouldallow them to purchase their own yarn toreally unleash their creativity.”

Elsies River history comes to light

GARY VAN DYK@gvdcapejazz

Elsies River has a rich history and agroup has been formed to raise aware-ness of its positive past.

The Elsies River History Society will behosting an open day on Heritage Day onThursday 24 September and call on the com-munity to be part of making the history ofthe area come alive.

Community development worker UrsulaReynolds, who is at the forefront of thisproject basedat theElsiesRiver library, saidthey want to make people, especially theyouth, aware of the positive things that havehappened in Elsies River.

“Our learners want to initiate projectsabout the area but there are no resourcesavailable to them,” she said.

“We want to correct matters and docu-ment the stories of thepeople andevents thatmade a difference.”

Senior librarian at Elsies River, JulianSchreuder, also feels strongly about thisproject, saying his staff always faced prob-lems when children needed informationabout the history of the area.

“It’s a project that’s long overdue,” hesaid.

“Todayall that people knowabout the area

is the crime and negative aspects but thereis so much more to Elsies River and if wemake these children aware of that richhisto-ry it could motivate them to become part ofthat history for the future.

“This area has produced stalwarts of thestruggle against apartheid, produced law-yers, doctors, technicians, artisans andteacherswhoall fought theirwayout of theirdisadvantaged circumstances.

“In the arts field some of the icons of SouthAfrican music comes from here. People likeRobbie Jansen and Tony Cedras who wenton to play and tour with Paul Simon, theirroots are here and we must let the worldknow about this history.”

Reynolds wanted the community to be-come involved by submitting those stories, withphotos anddocumentationwhereavail-able, to the society.

“There are people, families, individualswho know these stories and we want themto join us to share those stories with theworld.

“This is the time for them to come forwardand help us make a difference by telling thestory of Elsies River.”V For more information about the activities of thesociety contact Julian Schreuder on 021 933 8767,Ursula Reynolds on 082 694 2040 or Naidene Lotter-ing on 083 962 7573.

Children in Blikkiesdorp try out the jacketsthey received as part of HOPE Cape Town'sMandela Day activities.

Blikkiesdorp children get Madiba Day HOPEHOPE Cape Town staff and friends dedi-

cated their time in honour of MandelaDay by feeding the children of the

Blikkiesdorp community in Delft.Donor relations manager Fahim Docrat

said they started at around 09:00 and expect-ed to feed around 400 children. “We endedup feeding over 600 children,” he said.

“Fortunately with donations from Has-tens Beds South Africa and HOPE CapeTown ambassador Katlego Maboe, we hadenough porridge for everyone. We also gaveeach child a rain jacket and a party packwith juice, chips, sweets and other goodies.”

He pointed out that communities like Blik-kiesdorp need all the help they can get.“They are truly impoverished and our pro-grammes in the community seek to improve

nutrition and quality of life while also focus-sing on upskilling individuals and facilitat-ing access to health care.

“We encourage others to do their bit to al-so positively impact and make a differencein the lives of the needy. This was Madiba’svision and the true spirit of Ubuntu.”

It was a day with all hands on deck includ-ing HOPE Cape Town staff and visitors fromGermany and the USA.

“We engage the young people in crea-tive activities and involve our senior cit-izens in various projects,” said chairper-son John Killian.

“Our goal is to alleviate the intensepoverty in our areas and we embarkedon this home improvement project forthis semi-blind senior who lives witheight other family members in a two-room apartment. She shares a room withher son who is a TB patient, which is a

threat to her health.”Killian said while the call is to give 67

minutes of your time, they went beyondthis call to make this event special forthis family.

“There was no way that we couldachieve what we wanted in 67 minutesso we went way beyond that.

“Our plans involved painting, plumb-ing, electrical work and carpentry to fixand repair broken windows, cabinetswith no doors, electrical shorts and leak-ing taps in the apartment.

“Margaret was also in need of basicssuch as a bed and bedding, kitchen appli-ances, clothes and food, which we donat-ed to her.

who discovered the joy of music becamemo-re aware of their potential.“From a personal perspective, music has

always been something special in my life,”he said.“Working with children and youth in the

minstrels, I have seen the change in childrenwhen they start playing music and realisedImust do something to kindle that interest.”Abrahams managed to get former police

bandmusician Aubrey Richter and GrahamBarnes involved.

“We’ve only been going for about a monthbut I am already proud of what is beingachieved,” said Abrahams.“If they have the commitment and disci-

pline theywill be part of amusical fraternitythat will echo the positive beat of our com-munity.“At the same time theywill become the fu-

Welcometraining forbuildingcontractors

Better building contractors may beemerging from initiatives started bythe department of transport and pub-

lic works.Western Cape contractors are looking

forward to accredited training from the de-partment which set out to teach partici-pants how to run their businesses more ef-fectively.

Formanyparticipants this is a golden op-portunity to receive valuable trainingwithout having to pay for it.

Shuaib Julius (25), owner of AlmagateProjects in Ravensmead, says he is findingthe training worthwhile.

“I’m upskilling myself. I can use thistraining to further my company’s positionand improve its margins.

“I will also use this opportunity as a plat-form to compete for tenders and create jobsfor others,” he said.

The course has a modular design so thatparticipants can continue to actively runtheir construction businesses. Trainees at-tend five-day sessions every month overthe next ten months.

Progresswill be assessed throughmonth-ly written tests and again at the end of thetraining when participants present theirportfolios of evidence.

Those who successfully complete thecourse will receive a certificate of compe-tence from theConstructionEducation andTraining Authority (CETA).

The course constitutes the foundationphase of the department’s Siyenyuka Con-tractor Development Programme, and itsupports the Expanded Public Works Pro-gramme (EPWP).

It is accredited by the South AfricanQualifications Authority (SAQA) and it isopen to contractorswhohave aLevel 2 Con-struction Industry Development Board(CIDB) rating.

maak alles is in orde.

Party mense bring vir my kos.“Solank ek net my huur kan betaal en iets

op die tafel sit, is ek gelukkig.” Tembies sêhy hoop iemand sal vir hom ’n selfoon skenksodat hy direk met die polisie in kontak kanwees.“En as iemand vir my vullissakke kangee, sal ek bly wees.

“Die stuk grond was eers ’n stor-tingsterrein,” vertel Cynthia.

Daaris nege spelers in ’n span, drie in elke blok,

Belangstellendes kan Wynand Zaayman(WKRF-president) by 083 655 9009 of TaniaBrase (Parow-bestuur) by 074 188 2179 kon-tak of gaan na www.ringballsa.co.za virmeer inligting.

FOOTBALL: BELOVED PLAYER DIES AFTER BATTLE WITH ALZHEIMER’S

Final whistle for DannySTEHAN SCHOEMAN

Danny Abrahams, remem-bered as one of the best foot-ballers in the country during

the 1970s, will be sorely missed. Hepassed away in Ruyterwacht twoweeks ago at the age of 63.Hehad suffered fromAlzheimer’s

Disease for the past sevenyears andthe cause of his death is related tothe disease. His career began in Elsies River

at the local St Augustine’s Club. Itsoon became apparent that he wasdestined for greater things.

As a player he will be remem-bered as a genius who was bornwith the ability to stamphis author-ity on matches. With Cape Town Spurs he en-

thralled crowds and it was no sur-prise when he won the FederationPlayer of the Year Award in 1973.“My dad was a very loving and

humble man. I always had the feel-ing he cared more about other peo-ple than about himself. The way tosum him up would be to say he wasa real people’s person,” says hisson, Dean Abrahams. His long-time friend Ivan Jack,

playedmany games against him, al-so has fond memories. “Danny wasborn to play, he had flair and a setof skills that made it really difficultto play against him. We as the soc-cer community will fondly remem-ber Danny also for the great familyman and friend he was off thepitch,” says Ivan.Ivan recalls the time when there

were serious talks of him going toplay for Crystal Palace.“But then his grandma fell ill and

he decided to rather take care ofher. He decided family was moreimportant than stardom. That real-ly says a lot,” says Ivan.Danny’s friends and former play-

ers started the Danny AbrahamsEx-Footballers Fund to help thosein need.“Danny was the start of the fund,

butwe try andhelp asmany old soc-cer players financially as we can.The fund will continue to grow inhonour of Danny and we will con-tinue to help our friends who arestruggling financially,” said Jack. There will be a memorial service

Cooper, was

Hoewel J.G.
