A Le er from Fr. James

Dear Friends,The Gospel reading this weekend focuses on the theme of “iden ty.” In par cular, the iden ty of Jesus and the iden ty of the Church. Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am, and who do you say that I am?” In applying this ques on to our lives, we need to ask ourselves, what have I learned from others about God, and what is my personal convic on about the iden ty of God and my rela onship with him? This is very crucial because it is one thing to know about God, it is another thing to have a personal rela onship with God. Every Chris an is called to be an evangelist, to preach the Good News of the Gospel to others. The challenge is, we cannot preach eff ec vely to others about God if we do not have a personal encounter with the Risen Lord. The disciples and early Chris ans did not have a complete Bible or organized theological doctrines like we do today. They evangelized by simply sharing stories of their personal experiences and encounters with Jesus Christ, and brought others closer to God by commi ng their whole life to him. This is what we are also invited to do today, to share with others our personal experiences and encounters with God.

We also see in the Gospel today that Jesus revealed the iden ty of the Church to his disciples when he said, “Upon this rock I will build My Church.” No ce how Jesus clearly revealed the iden ty of the Church as “My Church,” not just any church. Jesus did not say, “I want you to build a church for me upon this rock.” In revealing the iden ty of the Church, Jesus also clearly iden fi es the leadership of the Church as being built on Peter. This clearly shows that Jesus established only one Church, the Catholic Church, entrus ng the leadership of the Church to Peter and his successors. He did not say that anyone is free to establish churches in his name.

This is a Gospel passage we can easily put into prac ce in our daily lives. During the week, try to ask a family member, friend, or neighbor these two ques ons: Tell me about your personal percep on of the iden ty of God? What is your understanding of the Catholic Church and her leadership? A er you listen to them, share with them your own experience and your personal understanding of God and Church. The more we engage in this reciprocal faith sharing, the more we grow in our faith.

    Thank you and remain blessed,

    Fr. James

Religious Educa on for 2020-2021Registra on for RE programs at St. Benedict (Journey of Faith, JAM and EPIC) is open online via our website at stbenedict.org. Classes begin the second week of September. Although sessions may look diff erent this year, we have worked hard to develop crea ve ways to con nue quality faith forma on for children and teens in our parish. We realize that new ways of learning, gathering, and praying may be diffi cult to embrace, but we trust that the Holy Spirit will con nue to guide our hearts and minds.

For all in-person gatherings, children and adults are expected to wear face coverings and proper physical distancing will be maintained. No snacks or sharing of supplies will be allowed. These prac ces are all for the protec on of everyone.

We look forward to beginning the new year of faith forma on together!

Saint Monica (332-387)August 27She had smiles for the neighbors, though her husband found her religion and the charity it inspired annoying. She made tearful prayers in private for a son, outwardly self-assured but, as his mother knew, inwardly restless, and whose girlfriend of a dozen years had borne his child out of wedlock. Though not the fi rst or last such mother and son, Monica and Augus ne are the Church’s most famous, so we keep their feast days back to back, with Monica’s, fi ngly, fi rst. To Rome she followed Augus ne, then to Milan, where years of prayer—and nagging—fi nally bore fruit in his conversion by Saint Ambrose. For six months, mother and son enjoyed the blessing of rediscovering each other. Just in me! On the way home to North Africa, Monica took sick and died near Rome. No child who has mourned a parent can read, unmoved, Augus ne’s tender account, in his Confessions, of Monica’s last days. At this me of the year, when parents watch apprehensively as children leave for school, may Monica’s perseverance and Augus ne’s long-prayed-for conversion ease anxiety and kindle hope. ~ Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. St. Monica PrayerSt. Monica,

    I need your prayers.

You know exactly how I’m feeling because you once felt it yourself.

I’m hur ng, hopeless, and in despair.

I desperately want my child to return to Christ in his Church but I can’t do it alone.

    I need God’s help.

Please join me in begging the Lord’s powerful grace to fl ow into my child’s life.

Ask the Lord Jesus to so en his heart, prepare a path for his conversion, and ac vate the Holy Spirit

    in his life.

    Amen.
