Our Lady of Victories Oktoberfest

Our Lady of Victories Parish will hold a parish Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 29, 2012 from 7PM – 11PM in Monsignor Dalton Hall. Bernie’s Orchestra will provide entertaining German music. The Bayern Verein dancers will entertain throughout the evening. A delicious German dinner will be served along with mouth-watering German desserts. German beer, wine, soda, and water will be available all evening. The ticket price is $35.00 and can be purchased by calling either Teri at (732) 727-7639 or Joe at (732) 257-4351. Tables of ten can be reserved for the event. Tickets are now available after all weekend Masses.

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6 A rich woman invites many guests to her home to eat and drink. She appeals to those who lack understand-ing to forsake foolishness and “advance in the way of understanding.”

Second Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20 Paul advises the Ephesians to abandon foolish ways and evil deeds. All Christians should concentrate on doing God’s will before all other things. He reminds them to always give thanks to God in the name of Je-sus Christ.

Gospel: John 6:51-58 Jesus had just told the crowd that anyone who ate of the bread He planned to give would live forever, and that this bread was His flesh, which He would give up for the sake of the world. The people do not under-stand, but Jesus reassures them that His flesh is real food and that “those who feed on this bread shall live forever.”

New Life Weekend New Life is a weekend course in the style of a retreat in which participants hear and experience the power of the Gospel message proclaimed. This unique course uses dynamic teaching methods to engage the partici-pants and bring them to an encounter with Jesus Christ. It will be presented in both English and Spanish and is open to ALL.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in Me and I in him.” As we know, our loving God cannot be seen by our eyes, but only experienced through loving people. Jesus’ invitation in giving us His flesh and blood to eat and drink is an invitation to enter into His own self-giving. We can be self-giving like Jesus because through the Eucharist, the body of Christ, we become Jesus. The mystery of Eucharist strengthens us for our daily dying and rising, our daily giving of ourselves for the sake of others so that we all might share more abundantly in divine life.

Back-to-school collection: Thank you…to all who have donated school supplies for our back-to-school collection. Because of your generosity we were able to put together over 50 backpacks so far!

Food pantry needs: The food pantry is running low on the following items: jelly/jam, tuna fish, macaroni and cheese, canned ravioli, spaghetti-o’s, beef-a-roni, coffee, cereal and peanut butter. All non-perishable food pantry donations can be left in the baskets at all Church entrances. Thank you, as always for your gen-erosity!

OLV Seniors September Meeting

The OLV Senior Group will hold their first monthly meeting of the 2012-2013 year on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 1PM in Monsignor Dalton Hall. Prior to the business portion of the meeting, the group will have a short prayer service to begin the new year. After the business portion of the meeting, coffee and cake will be served. Yearly dues of $10.00 will be col-lected at that time. Sandwich orders are being taken for the meeting. The sandwich choices are: ham and cheese, roast beef, turkey, tuna salad, and egg salad. Please call Geri at (732)257-4351 to order your sandwich. Please bring a food donation for the St. Vincent de Paul Society pantry. Anyone 55 years or older is welcome to join our Senior Group. We have always been a Church that draws its member-ship from various nations and ethnic groups. It’s a time to embrace our differences, to learn from one another the various ways in which we understand and cele-brate the mysteries of our shared faith. Hence, the new OLV Multi-Cultural Diversity Minis-try, in its initial stage of formation, would like to invite parishioners of all ethnic backgrounds to join us to pray together and to share unique religious and secular customs and faith traditions with the parish family.

Nurturing Parents: Raising Kids with Values, Strong Minds,

and Caring Hearts

Support, assistance and guidance are precious gifts for anyone raising a child. And it is with a full apprecia-

tion of parents and their important role in raising faith-filled children that the Diocese of Metuchen will host a day of workshops centered on contemporary parenting issues on October 6 at the St. John Neumann Pastoral

Center in Piscataway. Fee for the day is $15 and babysitting is included.

The program, “Nurturing Parents: Raising Kids with Values, Strong Minds and Caring Hearts,” is co-

sponsored by the diocesan Department of Formation and Leadership and the diocesan offices of Family Life and Schools. It will include workshops in both English

and Spanish dealing with special needs, social re-sources, bullying and internet safety, chastity, single parenting, prayer, medical resources and educational

opportunities.

Knitting/ Sewing Ministry

We will be knitting, crocheting and quilting items such as hats for preemies, lap ropes and prayer shawls. All items will be donated to local charities. Everyone is invited– experienced and those who would like to

learn. We are excepting donations of yearn, quilt bat-ting, embroidery thread, crochet hooks, knitting nee-dles and scissors. Thank you to all who have already
