Today is our 4th Sunday of listening to the Bread of Life Discourse from Chapter 6 of the Gospel according to John. We began 3 weeks ago by hearing of the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and the fish. Then we moved into the discourse where Jesus, the bread of life, is presented as God’s wisdom and revelation. Last week we heard of the murmuring of the people, which was a sign of unbelief. We are now hearing the more directly Eucharistic portion of this discourse in which Jesus reveals that he will give us His flesh and blood as our food, to give us His life. The fact that Jesus is teaching this in a synagogue (in Capernaum) is significant. The synagogue was the place in
which the rabbi (teacher) taught his disciples (learners).
The Eucharist is truly, really, and substantially, the Body and Blood of Jesus. Substance denotes the basic reality of
a thing, that is, what it is in itself.
Jesus is teaching to prepare for the institution of the Eucharist, the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Before the Synod on the Eucharist in 2004 (a meeting of selected bishops from throughout the world), they were to reflect
on:
65. The Eucharist’s meaning for the person is put in relief, so to speak, by St. Cyril of Jerusalem who remarks that through the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ a person becomes “one body (sýssomos) and one blood (sýnaimos) with him.” St. John Chrysostom imagines Christ speaking to him in the following manner: “I have again descended to earth, not simply to be present among you but to embrace you. I leave myself as food for you and I allow myself to be assimilated until our oneness and togetherness are truly perfect. Persons united together maintain their individuality, but I become totally one with you. In the end, I do not want anything to come between us; this only I desire: to be one with you.” On this basis, the body of the believer becomes the temple of the Trinitarian God: “he has Christ living in him, together
with his Father and the Paraclete.” …
[THE EUCHARIST: SOURCE AND SUMMIT OF THE LIFE AND
MISSION OF THE CHURCH, 2004]
Following the Synod, Pope Benedict XVI wrote in 2007 in
his Apostolic Exhortation, Sacramentum Caritatis:
#11 … The substantial conversion of bread and wine into his body and blood introduces within creation the principle of a radical change, a sort of “nuclear fission,” to use an image familiar to us today, which penetrates to the heart of all being, a change meant to set off a process which transforms reality, a process leading ultimately to the transfiguration of the entire world, to
the point where God will be all in all (cf. 1 Cor 15:28).
Let us approach our reception of Jesus in Holy Communion
with wonder and amazement.

Lost Bible - E100 military edition Catholic Bible with Lectio Devina. Bible had numerous prayer cards inside, act of contrition, hand written notes and a letter and envelope addressed to me from Sister Eunice Theresa of the Divine Mercy. If anyone remembers seeing this bible or knows of it whereabouts, please contact Yolanda at 703-
