The 10th TETRA World Congresshas opened with the news thatthe Asia-Pacific TETRA market hasdoubled in the last 12 months.With an increase of 98 per cent*in awarded contracts, the regionis the fastest-growing critical com-munications market in the world.

TETRA technology is now pre -sent in 103 countries, with a buoy-ant global industry demonstratedby a near 40 per cent increase intotal contracts awarded over thelast 12 months. While the major-ity of countries using TETRA are

now outside Europe, it is EasternEurope that delivered the secondfastest growing region after AsiaPacific, with the market showingcontracts up 48 per cent. The100th country to adopt the tech-nology was Namibia earlier thisyear, where Artevea Digital is delivering a network for the government.

While public safety remains thelargest global user base, in AsiaPacific the Transportation sectoris extremely strong with almost40 per cent of the market.

Globally, non-public safety sec-tors are showing huge potential,with the Oil & Gas market up 110per cent, and general commerceand industry up 94 per cent.

TETRA market doubles in Asia Pacific

Motorola is deploying its Dimetra IP TETRA solution for SK Energyin Korea. The system will include Asia’s first MTP850Ex ATEX TETRAterminal, used to provide comprehensive user safety in potentiallyexplosive environments.

Motorola has introduced the smallest body-worn TETRA CovertRadio to provide fully featuredTETRA radio functions to users incovert operations. The MotorolaTCR1000 in thin form factor canbe concealed in light clothing, andweighs under 180 grams.

Control features include the useof audio tones to identify talkgroup number to enable audio-

only recognitionof talk group selec tion. TheTCR1000 is con-trollable from a remote unit, andhas an integratedGPS. The radio also has an extend-ed battery pack option which canextend surveillance periods.Stand W

Sepura has launched a networkof Repairs Service Centres, to further improve its service to customers. The centres are beingset up by its distributors in Korea,China, Malaysia, Pakistan, Ar gen -tina, Germany, Spain and Sweden,with further countries to follow.

The Centres will assist Sepuradistributors through training andbusiness management advice. Anew help desk service centre hasalso been opened at Sepura’sheadquarters at Cambridge in the UK.

Multi vendor TEDS target for 2010Data Service, which will complyto the ETSI TEDS standard andwith the TIP specifications. Theirimplementations will provide anopen air interface and all compa-nies are committed to perform thenecessary IOP (interoperability)testing with other TETRA vendors.

Six leading TETRA manufacturershave signed a Joint industryStatement of Direction for TETRAEnhanced Data Service (TEDS),with the purpose of acceleratingthe development of TEDS func-tionality in their TETRA products.The targeted t imetable for a multi-vendor product offering isin 2010.

Artevea Digital, EADS, Rohill,Selex, Sepura, and Teltronic havesigned the Statement, drawn upby the TETRA Association.

It is recognised that the TEDSimplementation from multiple vendors has to be agreed at aconsiderable level of detail. TheTETRA Association’s TechnicalForum is currently working on theTEDS TETRA Interopera bi l ityProfile (TIP) specifications. Thisensures that any proprietary implementations are avoided.

EADS is to expand the KoreaElectric Power Corporation (KEP-CO) TETRA network. KEPCO hasawarded EADS reseller NuriTelecom the project to set up thenetwork in South Korea followinga trial deployment.

The new radio communicationsnetwork is replacing the existinganalogue system. It will be usedfor controlling and monitoringKEPCO's power distribution andtransformation network.

The network, operating at 380 MHz, will cover the seven

The Chinese economic boom isbeing matched by growing de-mand for Metro-style rail trans-port in almost every majorChinese city. Such rapid devel-opment presents several engi-neering challenges, not least ofwhich is providing effective com-munications for the new rail net-works.
