editor’s note: Holly Ralston-oyler has been working with today’s Woman almost since the conception of the magazine. she started as a writer and progressed into makeup styling for photo shoots. Holly, who owns Holly cosmetics, takes us back to a few of the shoots and articles to tell you what you didn’t know. all these covers she refers to were taken by photographer James Moses.

We DiDn’t Fall inthe photo was being taken in water, which set up a whole new level of makeup artistry, techniques, and products to consider. Photographer James Moses and i needed all the help we could get. this was an evening shoot and my husband, Ray, had come along and jumped (no pun intended — well, maybe) right in when it came to holding the lights, managing the electrical cords and holding the reflectors. there were a couple of technical glitches, but this is truly one of my favorite covers and definitely the most unusual one.

leaving a ReminDeR BehinD We took this photo a year in advance during a beautiful autumn afternoon. after raking leaves the editor’s daughter Kayla spent time finding the pretty red ones for the top of the pile for our photo. later that evening Kayla started itching and the rest of the story is history…a face swollen with a terrible outbreak from the poison sumac for several days.

Because i Was Back!

this cover was shot during a routine in-studio photo shoot along with the Gifting Gurus fashion layout. What made it

special was that it was also my first photo shoot since my

strokes in July 2010. it felt great to be back in-studio

doing the work i love.

motheR’s lovethis is one of those magical

covers and it shows. the bond between Penny love and her daughter stacye Bouchillion jumps off the cover and into

your mind. there was not much makeup needed on

this shoot. their glows came naturally.

RaDiance not in a Bottlethere is only one word to describe Brenda Woodling — radiant. While photographing her in her flower shop she was surrounded by so many different and beautiful colored flowers it was hard to choose one to use on the cover. We finally decided on the tiger lily to contrast her clothing, creating yet another magical cover. truthfully, the beauty in this cover is all about the person rather than the color.

make it snoW!only one problem — we shoot the december cover in fall, way before there is snow. We purchased cans of spray snow flocking and found

some evergreen trees. the concept was simple: spray evergreens with

the snow — enough so that it really looked like it had snowed. the only

possible issue: we were in a city park. (note: no one stopped us, and after

the shoot, we did shake down the trees to remove the flocking.)

“snow ball? did you really say we need a snow ball, anita?” after

rummaging through our vehicles, anita came up with a tennis ball. a

little spray — and instant snow ball.

readers and they are still talking about it today. We all want to have larger lips, but being realistic about how much larger they

should be is the key. this article goes into detail about what to expect, how to line your lips correctly, and the products you will need. there are even

going to WaR in iRaQ i have never understood how a woman could survive being in the armed services, much less a war zone — an iraq war zone, no less. interviewing army chaplain Major susan addams by email was certainly informative and enlightening. she painted such a graphic description with her words, it was like sitting in the sand alongside her. several months later she returned to Kentucky to visit her parents and family. We had kept in touch via email as much as possible, so it was great to finally meet her in person. We spent five hours talking over dinner (yes, we left a great tip) and became friends.

our cover model was originally chosen for the jewelry and fashion layout inside the magazine. When she was called back for the cover shoot, the look created was a parallel universe from the fashion layout. don’t ask how we managed to get the hair so high on top, just know it was not pretty from the back. We ended up with an ethereal cover that crossed over decades of beauty trends. Perfection is in the imagination of the today’s Woman Photo shoot team.

a makeoveRtaking Karen Povidn’s look from all neutrals to bright colors

and contrast has to be one of the most enjoyable articles i have written. Karen blended in — to everything. she

did not come across as having confidence in her style or appearance. she moved from ordinary to exciting, after selecting a new wardrobe for just under $300, getting

a new haircut and color along with a new eight-minute makeup routine. Moving on to some basic tips on how

to work with accessories, line, and design, she took on the image of a confident woman moving forward

in her career.
