But the absolute winter highlight of the Saxon capital on the Elbe is the city’s Christmas market, one of the oldest in the world – it first took place in 1434. Back then, it lasted just one day and was mainly held for the sale of meat for the religious holiday. But it owes its modern name to a different kind of food: the Dresden Christmas Stollen – known as “Striezel.” Check-in presenter Nicole Frölich explores the “Striezelmarkt” – the twinkling lights, Christmas music and the smell of mulled wine put her in the mood for the festive period. Starting Sat 22 December 06:02 GLOBAL 3000 Too Much! We’re exposed to consumer temptation on a daily basis; this applies to those living in industrialized nations, but also large sections of populations in emerging markets. The United Nations says that by the year 2030, the global middle class will have grown to 5.4 billion – up from 3 billion in 2015. All of whom want to, and should be able to, consume to their hearts’ content. But at what cost? Take the textile industry for exam- ple, where seasonal collections are quickly yesterday’s news. Today, just a few weeks separate design and dispatch – what’s known as “fast fashion” dominates the market. Its primary product: surplus. And what if nobody buys it? No matter, then the goods will just be destroyed – common practice in the fashion industry. Moreover, only a small portion of our discarded clothes are recycled. Wrestling Our Inner Couch PotatoA pledge to begin doing some form of exercise is a classic New Year’s resolution for many. After all, the importance of physical movement to our health is common knowl-edge these days. But often, this initial enthusiasm peters out after just a few months. People who are not used to playing sports often lose interest. Because execise is hard work, because the motivation is weak, because they’ve set themselves unrealistic goals or because they can’t integrate the sport into their everyday lives. That’s why it’s important to approach the issue gradually, by asking yourself a few key questions. What kind of exercise would I enjoy? What’s my physical starting point? People who’ve never played sports, or not done so for a while, should also have medical check-up beforehand. But how best to ensure an optimal return to regular sporting activity? And more importantly, how to stick at it? For answers to all these questions, our In Good Shape presenter Carsten Lekutat asks an expert.
