Documentary Wild equestrian games, fairytale palaces and hospitable people proud of their magnificent culture – all this will be encountered by those traveling through Uzbekistan on the Silk Road. The central Asian country borders Kazakhstan to the north and Afghanistan to the south. The journey begins in Samarkand, one of central Asia’s oldest cities. For centuries cities like Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva provided the necessary infrastructure for the caravans on the Silk Road, allowing merchants to trade their goods and providing accommodation for them and their animals. Many buildings still survive to underline the splendor and wealth that trade once generated. In Samarkand, one of the world’s oldest cities, three outstanding Koran schools, known as madrasas, on Registan Square have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the Boysun region in the Hissar Mountains the ancient, and none-too-gentle riding game known as Kopkari is held at Nowruz, the New Year festival. More than a hundred horsemen try to pick up the body of a dead goat from the ground and to escape with this from all the others. In 1380 the Uzbek folk hero Amir Timur (Tamerlane) had the gigantic Ak Sarav, the White Palace, built in Shahrisabz, the town of his birth. It had a thousand rooms adorned with gemstones. This documentary depicts Uzbekistan with its magical buildings, its fascinating landscape with deserts and mountains and its people, challenged by the clash between rich traditions and modernity. But it also illuminates the country’s problems such as the salinization of fields caused by large-scale cotton growing and the limited freedom of the press.

05:15 The Secret Revolution – Documentary They are swathed in religiously-correct floor-length black coats and may neither sit at the wheel of a car without the permission of their husbands nor work: Women in the Islamic monarchy of Saudi Arabia are meant to be invisible. Now they are fighting for change despite stiff resistance. This film portrays the pioneers who want to reform their society. Rasha Hefzi was elected to the city council of Jeddah in December 2015. It was the first election in the country's history where women could both vote and stand as candidates. But the first council meeting was fractious: her conservative colleagues did not want to sit in the same room with her and tried to banish her behind a wall. But Rasha Hefzi stood her ground. She represents a new generation of Saudis, many of who have studied abroad and are critical of their county and no longer wish to be the mere subjects of a repressive absolutist kingdom. Two filmmakers spent several weeks travelling through the desert kingdom, meeting exceptional women who want to change their country's future - with wisdom, diplomacy and persistence.

Documentary The demilitarized zone, or DMZ for short, is four kilometers wide, 250 kilometers long and splits Korea in half. It is not only symbolizes the division of the country but also clearly illustrates its reality. For the very first time, a camera crew has been allowed to shoot in the inaccessible border zone. Since the end of the Korean War in 1953, the DMZ has been the symbol for the division of Korea and is under UN administration. South Korean writer Kim Hoon joined our camera team on a trip to this forbidden no man’s land, making hidden realities accessible to the public for the first time – for example, the infiltration tunnel built by the North Koreans deep into the southern zone. Or the special compound run by the South Koreans to deal with the psychological problems of soldiers who have to keep lonely watch for days on end. We also see for the first time the mass graves of Russian, American, Chinese and Korean soldiers more than half a century after they died. The Cold War, of which this "wall” was an indirect consequence, ended in 1989. But the demilitarized zone makes it clear that a reunion of the hostile twins could still be very difficult.

Ouro Preto – City of Black Gold, Brazil The first pioneers arrived in Ouro Preto – "Black Gold" – in the 17th century, after the discovery of unprecedented deposits of gold. Our film looks at the architecture of one of the most important mining towns in the world, and traces the career of its main architect, Antonio Francisco Lisboa. Lisboa was known by the nickname "O Aleijadinho" (the little cripple) because he suffered from a debilitating disease – possibly leprosy – that left him increasingly disfigured. His work and his tragic life are closely linked to the fate of the city. His extraordinary sculptures, reliefs and architectural works are scattered throughout Ouro Preto. Even though working must have caused O Aleijadinho terrible pain in his later years, he remained creative until his death in 1813, tirelessly designing and constructing new variations on the style that later became known as "Barroco Mineiro." Legend has it that even when his hands were paralyzed, he tied a chisel and hammer to them so he could continue sculpting.

Documentary Instinctive certainty, phenomenal bow technique, a velvety tone – the critics are constantly beside themselves with praise. The Argentine cellist Sol Gabetta, who plays around 150 concerts every year, has long been an integral part of the classical concert scene – a portrait of a classical music star, including works by Vivaldi, Elgar, Schumann, Bloch and Shostakovich. Born in Argentina, her scholarships took her to Switzerland via Spain. Her parents and siblings all went with her – they all now live in the Basel area. Sol Gabetta discovered her love for the cello and its beautiful warm sound as a four-year-old. Her older brother Andrés was already playing the violin and so she chose the larger instrument for herself. Since then, she and her cello have been inseparable. Gabetta has a wide repertoire, with baroque and contemporary works as well as the traditional solo repertoire. But it’s not her musical sensibility as much as her personal charisma that has won her such a devoted following. Her performances invite her audiences to enter her world of ideas and feelings.

18:00 DW News 19:00 DW News 19:15 At Home in Tanzania – Germans in the Shadow o f Mount Kilimanjaro

Documentary The colonial era has left its mark on Tanzania, the country at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Even though the Germans were pushed out of East Africa after the First World War, the ties remain close. Many farms there have change little since, and Germans still live in some of them. German settlers originally built some of the old farmsteads on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro during the colonial era. Makoa Farm is one that dates back to that time. German veterinarian Elli Stegmaier and her husband Laszlo run a clinic there where they mainly treat sick and injured wild animals. It’s their dream come true. Not far from their estate is Momella Farm, where actors John Wayne and Hardy Krüger filmed the Hollywood classic Hatari in the early sixties. Krüger fell in love with the property and bought it and turned it into one of East Africa’s first bush hotels. Germans have left their mark on many of the country’s towns and cities as well. Lushoto, which used to be called Wilhelmstal, still has its old butcher’s and post office – they look as if their owners have just popped out on an errand. But our film also shows a different Tanzania and the challenges the country faces. A remote Maasai village is constantly seeking new grazing land for its livestock. And in the national parks such as Tanzania’s largest, the Selous Game Reserve, illegal ivory poaching has reduced the number of elephants from 70,000 to around 13,000 in the past five years.

The Grand Canyon – A Cross Section of the Ages, United States Planet Earth may be home to gorges that are deeper and narrower – but none is as spectacular, as awe-inspiring, as fascinating and as famous as the Grand Canyon. Located in northwestern Arizona, the Grand Canyon consists of a 1800-meter-deep gorge, up to 30 kilometers wide in some places. About 450 kilometers long, this tremendous gash in the earth’s crust runs through the wooded Kaibab Plateau. Geologists estimate that the area evolved over the past 40 to 50 million years. To the European colonizers, the canyon for centuries represented an impregnable no-man’s land. Only in 1869 did Major John Wesley Powell finally explore the interior of the ravine on his legendary voyage down the Colorado River. It was Powell who named it "The Grand Canyon.” Today, it is one of the most visited places in the United States, attracting some 5 million people every year.

in more than 60 roles in films and on television. Now he guides us around his second home, off the beaten track: Brühl’s Barcelona, full of memories and insider tips... From sunrise until the next morning, from Mount Tibidabo to the sea: Daniel Brühl presents faces of the Catalan capital that are particularly close to his heart. The son of a German TV director and a Spanish teacher, his lead role in the hit film "Good Bye Lenin!" brought him international fame. Then, in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," Brühl played a German war hero. "A film about Barcelona should be a personal film," he says. "One where I tell you what has happened to me since I was born here, what special people I have met here over the years and the hidden places I have discovered away from The Ramblas and the Gaudí Park." These include places such as the colorful artists’ quarter Gràcia, or Sant Gervasi where he recalls his childhood; and Born and Raval, where he enjoys the nightlife. Of course he also pays a visit to his favorite football club – Barca. "One is a life-long fan of few things," he says, "but what will never change is my enthusiasm for FC Barcelona."

Documentary 19:00 DW News 19:15 Transoceânica – The World’s Longest Bus Journ ey

Through the Desert to Lima Documentary From coast to coast: Our five-part film series Transoceânica is a road movie that takes us deep into the soul of South America. We take the longest direct bus journey in the world: 6300 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro to Lima in 100 hours. Episode 5 leads from the Andes down to the Peruvian coastal desert and the capital Lima – two days late. In Peru, roughly three times as many people, per capita, are killed on the roads as in Germany or France. Dangerous places in the Andes are often given names such as "Death Bend" or "Jinxed Bend," marking the spot where people have died. On the high plateau of the Andes, we find vicuñas, a type of lama, which produce the most expensive wool in the world. However, a parasite has recently decimated vicuña stocks, attacking the animals’ skin, leaving them unable to cope with the cold and rain. The western slopes of the Andes are dusty and dry. These mark the start of the Peruvian coastal desert, where the Nazca culture developed over 2,000 years ago. All that remains now are the famous Nazca Lines, enormous geoglyphs etched into the hard floor of the desert. The road then turns north along the Pacific coast, where there are numerous fishing villages. One of them is Pisco, where the local fishing trade has been badly hit by the El Niño weather phenomenon. And then finally, after 144 hours and 6,300 kilometers on the bus, we arrive in Lima – just two days late.

The Gold Road Documentary From coast to coast: Our five-part film series Transoceânica is a road movie that takes us deep into the soul of South America. We take the longest direct bus journey in the world: 6300 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro to Lima in 100 hours. In the third episode, our bus travels from Brazil across the border into Peru, where a raid on illegal gold prospectors is being prepared... People in Acre, Brazil’s westernmost state, are not interested in trade with neighboring Peru, even though this has become easier with the completion of the Transoceânica. No Brazilian goods are shipped to Asia through Peru’s ports either. The Transoceânica ought to have given international trade a boost, but this remote region is still lost in slumber. In the Peruvian Amazon, on the other hand, the new road has led to some major changes. The journey down from the Andes used to take days, now it lasts just a few hours. The gold deposits in the jungle’s rivers have attracted hordes of fortune hunters. The Peruvian government estimates that 20,000 people are panning for gold here – illegally. At the end of May 2016, most of the region of Madre de Dios was declared an emergency area after mercury used in gold extraction threatened to poison 50,000 people. Every few months, raids are carried out – but with limited success. The panhandlers return to their sites soon after the police have left. The Transoceânica bus passes through this region without incident. During the raids, the prospectors sometimes block the highway for days.

Married, but childless – there can be hardly a greater disgrace for women in some Muslim countries. That’s how it is in Niger too: Women are expected to have children. In this film, director Aicha Macky talks about her own childlessness and the sadness and stigma attached to it – but also about her courage, and the courage of other women who choose to live their own lives. Having no children is simply unimaginable in Niger, Aicha Macky says. Although the doctors cannot establish any medical reason in her case, she hasn’t been able to conceive. Her mother-in-law abuses her as a "fruitless tree." In strictly hierarchical Muslim societies, the cause of infertility is rarely sought among the men – the woman is almost always blamed. Aicha Macky tells her own touching story in this film. Her mother died giving birth to one of her siblings; in quiet reflection, she asks for advice from the dead woman and tries to overcome her sadness. That women openly talk about this issue at all is bordering on taboo in Niger. Aicha says this film has helped her to find herself. No longer willing to be excluded from society, she is bravely going her own way.

Candy Dulfer 19:00 DW News 19:15 Gabo – The Creation of Gabriel García Márquez , Part 1

Documentary Gabriel García Márquez is one of the best-known writers in the world and honored as a national hero in Colombia, his homeland. In particular, his books "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Love in the Time of Cholera" brought him world fame. He was the friend of great statesmen and was seen as one of the most important political voices in Latin America. Juan Gabriel Vásquez, a writer and admirer of Márquez, who was also affectionately known as Gabo, follows in his footsteps and tries to explain how a boy from a small Colombian village managed to change 20th Century western literature. His novel "One Hundred Years of Solitude," a family saga that reflects the tragedy of Latin America, marked the birth of so-called "magical realism." García Márquez grew up with his grandparents in Aracataca and the stories of his grandmother in particular fed into his writing. The second of these films takes the viewer through García Márquez’s life and looks at important moments, meeting friends, companions and admirers such as Bill Clinton and even shines a light on his often criticized friendship with the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

09:15 Transoceânica – The World’s Longest Bus Journey Of Gods and Mountains Documentary From coast to coast: Our five-part film series Transoceânica is a road movie that takes us deep into the soul of South America. We take the longest direct bus journey in the world: 6300 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro to Lima in 100 hours. The fourth episode takes the viewer from the Amazon basin up into the Andes. The mountains mark the most difficult stage of the trip for both drivers and passengers. The passengers have a large part of the journey behind them now. They have crossed Brazil and driven through the Peruvian Amazon basin to the Andes. Here, the endless greenery of the basin gives way to increasingly steep rock faces. The Incas worshipped these mighty mountains as deities and called them Apus – Gods. The road takes us close to one of them: Apu Ausangate, which is 6,384 meters high. We circumnavigate its flank through a 4,725-meter high pass. The temperature here is much lower than in the Amazon basin. Soon we reach Cuzco. For centuries the town was the center of the Inca Empire, until the Spaniards came and burnt it to the ground and built their own palaces on its walls. Today, the city is mainly one thing: a tourist magnet, and the starting point for tours to the legendary ruins of Machu Picchu. The complex is crumbling under the tread of millions of visitors from all over the world, and now the authorities are facing a dilemma: on the one hand, the tourists bring money; on the other the archaeologists want to preserve Machu Picchu for generations to come.

Economic pioneering, product piracy and strict monitoring of the opposition in exile: China does not shrink from anything. For ten years, the filmmakers meticulously researched how Beijing gets hold of data. The result is a vivid picture of the machinations of a worldwide espionage network that resembles a mythical "thousand-headed dragon." Like other great powers, China no longer bothers to conceal its intentions. In 2006, the Chinese Communist Party announced a new policy of acquiring foreign knowledge and converting it into Chinese property through domestic patents. This type of technology "transfer" is not new: it has already affected some well-known industrial companies such as TGV and Airbus in recent years. The process is familiar to Europe’s secret services and foreign ministries, but China’s gigantic internal market often distracts politicians and diplomats from the risks, the Chinese continue to snap up third-party intellectual property and expand their network of influence. Beijing is also stepping up the pressure on any Chinese citizen abroad who might pose a threat to the supremacy of the party. Millions of civil servants, as well as more than a billion other Chinese, serve this gigantic machine.

Fontenay – The Monastery of Poverty, France By the end of the late 11th century Christianity had become well established in France and the aristocratic abbots in the Benedictine monasteries enjoyed comfortable lives. The monastic ideals of poverty and humility seemed to have been forgotten. Then a new order calling for a return to Christian ideals and a simple lifestyle appeared in Burgundy. The monks called themselves "Cistercians." The monks built their first monastery in Citeaux and later called themselves the Order of Cistercians. It grew quickly and new monasteries arose including Fontenay, founded in 1118 by Bernard of Clairvaux. The well-preserved abbey is seen as a prototype of Cistercian architecture and now attracts some 12,000 visitors a year. The film examines the life of the Cistercians and outlines the history of Fontenay.

Documentary Sibel, Nermin and Dilek are three daughters of immigrants who’ve been successful in their careers. These three women, one lawyer, one high school teacher and one manager, have managed to obtain jobs in well-respected professions. That’s not something that can be taken for granted, because their parents are from Turkey and came to Germany as so-called guest workers. Even though she had good grades, Nermin Erdogan didn’t get into high school. Yet today she is a high school teacher herself, in spite of frequent discrimination and rejection. Dilek Yogurtcu has also made it. She studied German and history at the University of Tübingen and got a job in an international company. She doesn’t see her dual cultural identity as a problem but an asset. That’s how Sibel Yüksel feels too. She knows from personal experience how important it is to feel at home in both languages. She works as a lawyer and specializes in international family law. Around half of her clients have foreign roots. This film is about these three daughters from immigrant families who have successful careers in spite of many of the obstacles closely connected to the story of their parents’ generation in Germany. When they were young, all three women were often made to feel that immigrant children were unlikely to be successful at school or at university.

Gorée – The Slave Island, Senegal Gorée is a small island in the Cape Verde Sea just off the coast of the Senegalese capital Dakar. Its ensemble of pastel-colored colonial houses from 18th and 19th centuries is nothing short of idyllic. But appearances can be deceptive: Gorée was originally built on the slave trade. The hourly ferry brings day-trippers from the modern metropolis to the island, seemingly transporting them back to another time. Less than half a kilometer square, with no cars, telephone lines or no modern buildings, it’s place steeped in history, where a piece of the past has been preserved. But that past was steeped in misery. Gorée was one of the main hubs for "human goods," slaves the Europeans brought in from Africa. They were collected and branded here and then shipped off to the New World. The slave trade was so lucrative that the Europeans fought amongst themselves for control of the island for centuries. Now the only remaining slave house is a museum, and today descendants of slaves from all over the world come to this symbol of tragedy in search of their roots.

Bernasconi investigates the prospects of eternal life coming across some unusual methods as he does so. Ageing is simply inescapable – or is it? Controversial age researcher Aubrey de Gray doesn’t think so. He says it should be possible to see life expectancy increase dramatically in the near future, perhaps even by as much as a thousand years. The philosopher Stephen Cave on the other hand confronts filmmaker Bernasconi with the question of whether we can ever really escape mortality. Meanwhile, in the US, Bernasconi investigates cryonics, a method where the human body is frozen in liquid nitrogen. And, at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, researchers are working assiduously on the potential fusion of humans and robots – how human consciousness can be transferred to a virtual world and thus sustained forever. Waiting for Immortality – an entertaining, enlightening and philosophical documentary.

Elvis Costello 02:00 DW News 02:03 The Day – News in Review 02:30 Sand – A Dwindling Resource?

Documentary Everyone talks about oil and water, but a battle has broken out for another resource: sand. The small grains must be the most underestimated resource of our time. We all need it: sand is used in the casting molds for automobile manufacturing, in microchips, in food, glass and especially in concrete. As sand becomes scarce, the potential for conflict increases. Sand will be a key resource in the future. This film visits locations from Germany to the Gulf States to look at how dependent our modern society is on sand, and what conflicts can emerge as a result. One of Germany’s biggest reserves of quartz sand is west of Cologne at Frechen. It produces 3,000 tons of sand every day. But to get at the deposits, the ancient forest above is being cleared. Environmentalists say this is a disaster for nature and want the woodland to be put under protection. Internationally, it’s mainly larger-grained sands that are leading to conflict. Desert states such as Dubai are reaching the limits of their own resources with their prestige projects and mega-structures, which means they now have to import sand. Ironically, the desert sand is unsuitable for construction because its grains are too smooth and round. The insatiable demand for sand has led to sky-high prices and illegal quarrying and a real mafia has grown up. The consequences are serious: India’s coasts are being quarried and entire islands are disappearing off mainland Indonesia. If the international construction boom continues, are we heading towards a global sand crisis?

Documentary 19:00 DW News 19:15 Baghdad – The Divided City

Documentary Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims used to live side by side in the Iraqi capital thanks to the high walls that separated them. But today, Baghdad is gripped by fear and violence. Political and religious groups are fighting for control. This documentary tells the story of a war-torn city. Baghdad is sinking into fear, chaos and violence. More assassinations occur in the Iraqi capital than anywhere else in the world. The city’s inhabitants have also witnessed the bloody end of Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship, the American occupation and the explosion of religious conflict between Sunnis and Shiites that began in 2006, which has since been further fueled by the rise of the so-called Islamic State. In 2015, more than 3,500 people were killed in murders and assassinations in Baghdad. This documentary looks at the recent history of the city and its inhabitants, who fear for their lives every day, yet have clung onto their humanity in spite of their despair. Fourteen years of war have made three million Iraqis refugees in their own country. Most of them seek safety around the capital. By talking to residents, religious leaders, politicians and militia fighters, the authors, who have been working in Baghdad for years, tell the story of this ancient city, which has long been at the epicenter of a destructive modern war.

Silbermond 19:00 DW News 19:15 Gabo – The Creation of Gabriel García Márquez , Part 2

Documentary Doping among professional athletes is a well-known phenomenon, but what about amateur athletes? It would be a serious error to believe that performance-enhancing drugs are not an issue there too. An estimated 450,000 Germans have taken performance-enhancing drugs at some point. They seem to be fit, but many, especially bodybuilders, are in fact sick. Yet the politicians pretend this is news. Anabolic steroids in particular are becoming a life-threatening danger for amateur athletes, who, while they seem to be in rude health, are often suffering from multiple internal organ damage. Heart attacks are also common. And quite a few dopers with massive muscles often lose precisely what they are seeking to embody: their masculinity. Other countries have already recognized that doping is a serious social problem: in addition to individual tragedies, the long-term consequences cost the healthcare system a lot of money. So what are politicians in Germany doing about it? The government’s doping commissioner, Marlene Mortler, doesn’t feel responsible and passes any enquiries on to the Interior Ministry. The ministry in turn says it’s only responsible for professional sports, not sport in general. But thousands of trials, hundreds of guilty verdicts and around half a million dopers in gyms are

Belém – Monuments of Former Colonial Power, Portuga l In the late Middle Ages, Portuguese seafarers pushed beyond the limits of the known world. Belém, one of Lisbon’s oldest suburbs, was their home port. It became an important place because navigators as Vasco da Gama came back here with precious spices. In 1516, the Torre de Belém was erected at the mouth of the Tejos River, and one year later, construction began on the monastery. Originally, the tower of Belém, now left high on dry land, served as a fortress and lighthouse. A year later, King Dom Manuel I ordered the monastery to be built nearby. The radiant white Hieronymite was to be visible proof of the regal power and indescribable wealth of Portugal. It houses the tombs of Vasco de Gama and Luís Vaz de Camões, author of the Luisades, Portugal’s national epic. Both structures date from the era when Portugal was one of Europe’s major powers.

Documentary Merapi, the volcano on the Indonesian island of Java, is one of the ten most dangerous and unpredictable in the world. In the past hundred years alone, it has claimed over 1,500 victims. The risk of another serious eruption is high and could even have a global impact. Volcanologists from all over the world are now observing Merapi’s every movement because it has become highly unpredictable since its last major eruption in 2010. The researchers are pursuing two main aims: on the one hand, increasing the chances of predicting an eruption, which would protect people in this densely populated region in the future; and on the other, they want to improve their understanding of the way this highly volatile volcano works and apply that knowledge to other particularly dangerous volcanoes around the globe. The filmmakers accompanied scientists from Germany’s Research Center for Geosciences into the dangerous and fascinating world of the steaming crater 3,000 meters up. What is the significance of the mysterious channel that suddenly appears in the heart of the volcano? And what dangers are really lurking beneath the island of Java?

Roeros – Copper Town, Norway For 300 years, the town of Roeros was the center of copper mining in central Norway, where both locals and laborers from Sweden and even Germany worked as day laborers. The men and children worked in its numerous mines in two shifts, assailed by deafening noise and acrid stench. The ore-bearing rock was transported to the town’s smelting plant by horse and cart. The pay was low and most people also had to work on the land to make ends meet. While the administrators of the copper mines lodged in splendid villas a distance away from the pits, the day laborers and farmers lived in the simple wooden houses that still dominate the townscape. The last mine only shut down in 1977. Today, the wooden houses as well as the smelter and the adjacent forges are all part of the Roeros museum.

Documentary Over 200,000 underage migrants reached Europe since 2014. Tens of thousands of them have disappeared. They were either taken from reception areas for asylum seekers or were never registered in the first place. They live in a parallel world that remains invisible to most Europeans. They are often forced into prostitution and drug trafficking. This documentary goes looking for them. According to official data, 10,000 unaccompanied refugee children and young people have disappeared in Europe over the last three years, although unofficial estimates put the number as high as 30,000. Greece, Italy and Germany have simply lost track of them, and the authorities report them as missing. But who are these children? How can they just disappear? Filmmaker Chiara Sambuchi goes looking for them in large cities, ports, crowded refugee camps and secret hiding places. The reality of the children is hard to bear. The two Moroccan brothers try to scale the high walls of the Spanish exclave of Melilla to get to the ferries that will take them to the mainland. Mi Lad's parents paid a trafficker in Afghanistan to get him away from the Taliban. Farid has made it to Rome and talks about the pedophiles that lure children into hotel rooms with a few euros and the prospect of a hot shower. A 14-year-old girl from Nigeria was lucky: she found refuge in a special facility after being forced into prostitution.

Denmark’s old Knabstrupper horses are known their unusual spotted coloring. The most famous of them is probably Pippi Longstocking’s, from Astrid Lindgren’s children’s books. Three hundred and fifty years ago, Knabstruppers were so valuable that their stallions were worth their weight in gold to Europe’s royal houses. Today the Knabstrupper is facing extinction. There are only around 350 pure-breds left in the world, and their survival is thanks not least to Heinz Hackmann from Werpeloh in Germany’s Emsland region. He has devotedly bred them for the past 35 years. He doesn’t cross them with any other breed, as is now customary in Denmark. A gardener by training, he admits that you have to be a little crazy to dedicate every spare moment to the preservation of this breed, which is now especially popular among Baroque riding enthusiasts. But when this award-winning amateur breeder looks out at nearly twenty mares and their foals in his meadow, his eyes light up with passion. Our documentary follows Heinz Hackmann and his Knabstruppers from the birth of the foals in spring through to auctions and competitions at the Bückeburg riding school. And we also unmask a secret: the genetic legacy behind the spotted hide that was depicted as far back as in Stone Age rock drawings.

Documentary 19:00 DW News 19:15 Zubin Mehta – A Portrait

Documentary Zubin Mehta is one of the most charismatic conductors of our time and a citizen of the world with many facets: Indian Culture, a North American lifestyle and European music traditions. On April 29, 2016 Zubin Mehta turned 80. This film accompanies him on current projects and shows important stages of his life. If you are talking about Zubin Mehta, his great contribution to the classical concert and the opera will be one topic – the other will be his commitment to a better world. He has constantly made political statements, as when he rushed to Israel during the Six Day War in 1967 and conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in gas masks. Or when he traveled with the Bavarian State Orchestra to the crisis region of Kashmir a few years ago to appeal for reconciliation between India and the Kashmiris. He shares this sense of responsibility with another conductor, Daniel Barenboim, who is also his lifelong friend. This documentary follows Mehta to places that are closely connected with his life – Mumbai, Israel, Berlin and Florence. It also looks back on a great career straddling Europe and North America – one that has also been furthered by his flair for major events with great public appeal.

19:00 DW News 19:15 Crimea through the Ages – Documentary

In March 2014, Russia’s annexation of Crimea attracted the West’s condemnation, but the Russians living there, as well as Russia's President Vladimir Putin, believe it was justified. But in fact, if you look at the history of the Crimea, you will see that conflicts over the Black Sea peninsula have a long tradition. This film immerses itself in this history and links the past and the political situation today. For thousands of years, different peoples have left their mark on the cultural identity of the Crimean peninsula. First came the Scythians and Greeks, whose early settlements are still preserved as historical sites. The Khan's Palace in Bakhcharsaray, the national shrine of the Crimean Tatars, is also now a museum. The synagogues of Yevpatoria and Kerch stand beside the splendid palaces of the old Russian nobility. Stalin had his dacha in the hills of Crimea. Crimea was annexed by Russia for the first time in 1783. In 1954, the Soviet head of state Nikita Khrushchev handed it to Ukraine, but in Russia itself, the sentimental regret over the "loss" of Crimea has never gone away. Our film looks at the lives of the different ethnic groups in Crimea: Ukrainians, Russians and Tatars, and historians and experts on international law examine the present political situation there.

Documentary The market for traditional African art is booming worldwide. In the last few months, some pieces have sold for millions at auction. Masks and unusual cult objects have always attracted European collectors. What is new is that African art is now often bought as a purely speculative investment. Over the last 200 years, Africa has lost countless important cultural treasures. Thousands of them have ended up in museums, private collections and galleries. New excavations in the Nok tribal lands in Nigeria have unearthed centuries-old art that was lost because there was no written culture there, yet today many Nok artifacts can be found in museums from Boston to Brussels. Masks and sculptures have become expensive speculative objects in the art market, which has also led to a boom in counterfeiting. This documentary takes us to voodoo rituals in Togo, cult rites in Benin and to a European fair for primitive art. It also charts the way value is added on the route from poor wood carvers in Mali to prestigious auctions in Paris and New York. Recently, a beautifully carved female statue from the Senufo in West Africa was sold for a record price of more than $12 million. Today, almost a million people in Africa live from making and selling replicas.

Roskilde Cathedral – Burial Place of Kings, Denmark In the 10th Century, when the Danes were still Vikings and feared throughout Europe, their king built the church that eventually became Roskilde Cathedral – one of Denmark’s national monuments. Most of the country’s rulers are buried in the first Gothic brick building, which is the largest church in Scandinavia. Over the centuries, the kings and queens of Denmark added funerary chapels to the original nave: Among others, Queen Margrethe, who also ruled over Norway, Sweden and Iceland, is buried here. Christian IV, a particularly powerful ruler, rests in a correspondingly elaborate crypt. For centuries, Norway rulers built themselves burial chambers here, and every style from Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque and Classic can be found here. In fact, most of them were introduced into the country through the cathedral anyway. Today's rulers are more modest and recent additions are more discrete: it is privilege enough to be buried here. For the descendants of the Vikings, Roskilde Cathedral remains an important national monument.

Documentary What’s it like to live without running water? In Peru’s sprawling capital, Lima, this is the everyday reality for 1.5 million children and adults, forced to pay up to a week’s salary for just one day’s water. And the problem isn’t confined to the capital, across the country, the shortage of water is putting lives in danger and provoking conflict, as it displaces communities and threatens their agricultural livelihoods. Climate change is partly to blame, but in this film we explore how European consumers are making this crisis worse. The fruit and vegetables – avocados, asparagus and exotic fruits – that end up on our supermarket shelves are literally sucking Peru’s land dry. In Lima we meet families struggling to live without one of life’s basic necessities. With only a few liters of water a week, their children’s health is at risk, and they’re at the mercy of unscrupulous businessmen, whose water trucks sell allegedly contaminated water at inflated prices. For others, the situation is even bleaker – we meet people without access to any water at all, who are forced to beg their neighbors every day for enough to wash and cook with. But there are no easy answers to the deepening crisis. Peru’s industries have brought jobs, wealth and even women’s empowerment to vast areas that used to be desperately poor. This film goes right to the heart of the water crisis – showing how society’s poorest are caught in the middle of a struggle between business, climate change and international politics.

Petäjävesi – Upon these Logs We Built Our Church, F inland Built in 1763, the small wooden church in Petäjävesi in Finland is a monument to the simple beliefs and the craftsmanship of the people who built it. Ever since it became a World Heritage Site, the church has been used in the summer months for weddings, baptisms and services. Petäjävesi means "Great Pines on the Water" and that name reflects its surroundings in some of the most beautiful lakeland scenery of Central Finland, In the summer of 1763 the local people had been waiting for two years for permission to build a new church. When they failed to receive an answer to their request from the Swedish king they decided to go ahead and build it anyway. The wooden blockhouse construction was completed in just 35 days. Now it is one of the finest examples of Finnish wooden architecture still in existence. The church is laid out in the form of a cross with arms of equal length. With its logical proportions, octagonal domed ceiling and ornate details, the church still fascinates even today. The wood was never painted, neither inside nor out, and has developed an exceptionally fine patina over the past 300 years.

The Nazi era was long taboo as a subject of light fiction in Germany. But crime fiction has drawn many readers to a topic that would normally put them off. European authors are enjoying great success with crime stories set in the Third Reich, which was itself the scene of inconceivable crimes. In 2004, Dominique Manotti published her darkest novel, "Le Corps Noir " about the French Gestapo in Paris in August 1944. Philip Kerr has been sending his hardboiled investigator Bernie Gunther to the darkest corners of the Nazi Reich since 1988. And in contrast to Kerr, Volker Kutscher began his series of novels in the Weimar Republic, investigating how his protagonist Gereon Rath deals with the transition from democracy to dictatorship. Crime novels reach millions of readers around the world. They are like a drug: atmospheric with a delirium of violence and lawlessness and great high contemporary relevance. Our camera follows the writers to Berlin, New York, Paris, London and Cologne and takes the viewer into grim, unfamiliar places.

Amy Macdonald 02:00 DW News 02:03 The Day – News in Review 02:30 The Tale of Europe – Documentary

Is there a common vision of Europe? In 1989 it looked like this: The Berlin Wall had fallen and Europe was expanding. The EU brought open borders, visa-free travel, the free exchange of goods and prosperity for many. Is all this now being threatened by growing populism in many European countries? We embark on a journey through a continent in upheaval in search of a common future. Europe was a great idea born out of the ruins of the Second World War, German guilt and the knowledge that reconciliation even with an archenemy was necessary to create a united Europe. Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl and François Mitterand made it reality. Europe stretched from Greece to Ireland and from Portugal to Poland. Then came the financial crisis, Greek debt and the refugee crisis. And now the Brexit referendum has made it clear: You can also get leave Europe. Millions of people no longer see a common European future. Europe is in deep crisis and threatened by a new wave of nationalism where national outweighs common interest. But wasn’t that a birth defect – to forget that every country in Europe has its own history with and in Europe? Our film team set off across Europe to meet writers, filmmakers and theater people and asked them how their countries see Europe.

Western Union, MoneyGram and many other money transfer agencies are making a killing. The international migration of labor has created a flourishing and profitable financial services industry. Every month, around 200 million people send their hard-earned pay back home to the countries they left in search of work. And that is changing entire economies. It’s dead simple: money is paid in at an office in the USA, Europe or the Arabian Peninsula and can be picked up within a few minutes at one in the recipient country – in Latin America, Africa or Asia. The World Bank estimates the transactional volume at about $420 billion a year, sent by Chinese garment workers in Chinese-owned factories in Italy; by Nepalese servicing air conditioning systems on skyscrapers in Dubai in over 50 degrees of heat; or by Hondurans working on Florida's construction sites. The complex effects of these transactions are changing the economies of the home countries: in fact they now make up a significant part of gross national income for some of them. In the meantime, agriculture and infrastructure are left untended, which means that even more people are being forced to emigrate. It’s a perfect vicious circle.

19:15 Afro.Germany – Documentary

Where are you from? Afro-German journalist Jana Pareigis has heard that question since her early childhood. In fact, black people have been living in Germany for 400 years. In our documentary Pareigis travels through the country to speak with other black Germans, including rap stars and pro footballers, and find out what their experiences have been – and what needs to change. Black people have been living in Germany for around 400 years, and today there are an estimated one million Germans with dark skin. But they still get asked, "Where are you from?" Jana Pareigis is all too familiar with this often latently racist question. When she was a child, the Afro-German TV presenter also thought her skin color was a disadvantage. "When I was young, I wanted to be white," she says. Parageis takes us on a trip through Germany from its colonial past up to the present day, visiting other dark-skinned Germans to talk about their experiences. They include rapper Samy Deluxe, pro footballer Gerald Asamoah and Theodor Michael, who lived as a black man in the Third Reich. They talk about what it’s like to be black in Germany. DW’s Susanne Lenz-Gleissner and Jana Pareigis made this film together with Afro-German director Adama Ulrich.

Documentary There has been a railway line across Myanmar’s Shan province for more than a century. The Mandalay-Lashio Express connects the hot, deep plains with the hilly highlands and is vital but fragile lifeline for thousands of residents. Many monks, traders, travelers and smugglers use the daily train from the metropolis of Mandalay to the northeast of Myanmar. The breathtaking views on the 16-hour trip are of less interest to the many commuters than the snacks and drinks sold by traders like Daw Dee, who sells homemade tealeaf salad. The former Burma’s colonial past meets the modern-day Myanmar along the railway track. Between Mandalay and Lashio, the Goktheik Viaduct built by the British colonial power spans a 300-meter deep gorge. Built in 1900, the bridge is a technical masterpiece, 700 meters long and 250 meters above the riverbed below. The train has to cross the aging steel construction at walking pace. Until a few years ago, it was strictly forbidden to take photographs of this strategically important structure, and even today minefields protect its pillars from attack by rebels. Our camera team accompanies train driver U Zaw Win, railway inspector Ko Tha Naing and the traders on their journey.

The "ochre city" arose from an encampment of the conquering Almoravids in the 11th century. The Berber Almoravid Dynasty built an expansive irrigation system, transforming Marrakech into an oasis at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. In the center of the old town is the Place Djemaa el Fna, the "Square of the Beheaded," where, until the turn of the 20th century, the heads of executed criminals and enemies of the sultan were displayed. Today, the square is teeming with attractions of a less bloodthirsty nature: a market, storytellers and street performers during the day, and open-air restaurants and cafés in the evening. Not far from the square is the Madrasah Ben Youssef, a 14th century Koran school, the Bahia Palace with its lavish harem courtyards, and the Saadian tombs. Behind the walls of the royal palace is a world of luxury and splendor – a world normally closed off to the common people, including tourists. Camera teams were granted access to the magnificent chambers and private gardens of King Hassan II for the first time for this report.

Documentary Colonia Dignidad was the scene of shocking crimes in Chile: torture, the rape of minors, the forced administration of psychoactive drugs and spying. To the outside world, Colonia Dignidad looked like a model German settlement. The cover-up continues today. Many victims have been waiting for compensation for decades. Founded in 1961 by Christian German emigrants in Chile, Colognia Dignidad presented itself to the outside world as a model settlement. But it was really hell on Earth for its residents. It later even became a torture center for the Pinochet regime. Reports about crimes committed by the colony’s leader, Paul Schäfer, emerged early on. But nobody intervened. For years, German diplomats denied the human rights abuses, covered up the horrendous conditions, and even sent back members of the cult who had fled. For years the pensions of the colony’s German citizens were paid directly to the Colonia Dignidad’s leaders. The German Foreign Ministry has now opened its archives to shed light on the role of German diplomats in this scandal. Paul Schäfer went into hiding in 1996. He was arrested in Argentina in 2005 and extradited to Chile, where he died in prison in 2010. But his accomplices continued running the cult. While the area where the colony was based is now used for tourism, many of the victims, Germans and Chileans alike, are still severely traumatized and waiting in vain for help and compensation.

Monasteries in Moldavia – The Refinement of Religio us Images, Romania The monasteries of northern Moldavia were built as spiritual bulwarks against the advance of Islam. After Constantinople fell to the Turks in the middle of the 15th Century, Rumania saw itself as the final bastion of the Christian West. For the Moldavians, the fight against earthly enemies such as the Turks, Tartars and Saracens was the same as the one every believer had to fight against the devil. This belief led to the creation of Moldavia’s most beautiful monasteries. Seven of them are World Heritage Sites, including Humor, Voronet, Sucevita and Moldoviţa. The frescoes on their walls allude to the imagery within. The images are flat like icons – Orthodox tradition has it that only two-dimensional images can extend into eternity, and it is from this eternity that the saints on the walls gaze out at the visitor. Although they exude calm and their gestures are terse and stern, the multitude of saints, angels, monks, bishops and apostles who inhabit the walls seem to be in a constant state of motion.

Memories can be deceptive. Psychologists and criminologists know that eye witnesses are not overly reliable, even when they’re acting in good faith. But what psychologists and criminologists have long known is still news to the justice system, the police and the public. This film reveals how our memory can be manipulated, and why we can rely so little on it. Adapting interrogation techniques and therapies to the latest insights into memory is a slow process. "Memories don’t create an imprint in the brain that we can retrieve at any time – in fact, our memory is malleable," says psychologist Elizabeth Loftus. As a result, innocent people are frequently found guilty because witnesses don’t remember things correctly. The NGO Innocence Project estimates wrong witness statements contributed to 242 of the 343 verdicts subsequently overturned by DNA evidence in the United States. Even our memories of our own lives can be manipulated. This documentary explores the conditions under which false memories can arise, and what the far-reaching consequences of this can be in court – for prosecution and defendants alike.
