Dr. Lily D. McNair has been selected as Tuskegee Uni-versity’s eighth president by unanimous vote of the university’s Board of Trustees. Her appointment as Tuskegee’s first female president comes after nearly seven years of ser-vice as provost and senior vice presi-dent for academic
affairs at Wagner College - a private college of 2,200 stu-dents located on New York’s Staten Island.
She previously served as associate provost of research and divisional coordinator for science and mathematics at Spelman College, where she was responsible for culti-vating the institution’s research capabilities. This includ-ed strengthening its infrastructure of policies and pro-cedures related to faculty involvement in research, and developing a coordinated system to improve the efficient use of its research resources.
Dr. McNair served as associate professor of psychology and associate director of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training Program at The University of Georgia, where in 1999 she was the first African-American woman to ob-tain tenure and promotion in the Department of Psychol-ogy . She also has served as professor of psychology on the faculty of The State University of New York at New Paltz, and as a clinical psychologist at Vassar College.
A clinical psychologist by training, Dr. McNair’s research has focused on the development and evaluation of com-munity-based interventions targeting substance use and early sexual behavior in African-American youth. Her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Men-tal Health, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Preliminary findings of these longitudinal
studies are demonstrating the significant impact of posi-tive parenting practices on children’s outcomes across a variety of domains. Dr. McNair is also the co-editor of Women: Images and Realities (4th ed.), an introductory multicultural women’s studies textbook.
Dr. McNair’s continuing research interests include ex-amining the role of stress in the alcohol consumption of female college students. This interest, dating back to her dissertation research, marked the beginning of her longstanding interest in gender-related issues in social behavior. She continued this line of research while at The University of Georgia by investigating cognitive factors related to alcohol use and risky sexual behaviors, with particular attention to gender-related influences on de-cision-making and risk taking. Her work examines two specific areas of sexual risk: sexual behaviors related to the transmission of HIV/AIDS (unsafe sexual practices) and sexual aggression (i.e., acquaintance rape). Dr. Mc-Nair also is interested in the dyadic nature of alcohol use and sexual risk-taking, and has begun to investigate the changes in alcohol consumption and sexual risk-taking that occur in dating couples over the course of their re-lationships.
Dr. McNair has served as major professor for more than 10 doctoral students in clinical psychology at The Uni-versity of Georgia, where she was actively involved in both undergraduate and graduate training. She consid-ers her contributions to the education of junior scholars to be among the most rewarding aspect of her career at UGA, where she was actively involved in increasing the numbers of African-American graduate students in the Department of Psychology.
A native of New Jersey, Dr. McNair holds an undergradu-ate degree in psychology from Princeton University, and master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She is mar-ried to Dr. George W. Roberts, a retired senior adminis-trator at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention. Together they have two adult children: Randall Roberts and Marguerite Roberts.

On behalf of the faculty, staff and students, we extend greetings and welcome to the 54th Annual Veterinary Medical Symposium that is being held at our new location, Auburn Marriott Opelika Hotel & Conference Center at Grand National in Opelika, Alabama. Our theme this year is Veterinary and Human Health Professionals: Mutual Benefits as Synergistic Partners.
We have planned another outstanding Symposium filled with various dynamic speakers as well as several new activities that will add some additional social and health benefits to all participants. The kick-off begins on Wednesday, March 20th with an Alumni/Student Reception sponsored by the Tuskegee Veterinary Medical Alumni Association (TVMAA). This venue serves as a platform for students to network and identify mentors with alumni and speakers in various disciplines. The opening session on Thursday, March 21st begins with the T.S. Williams Lecturer, Dr. Fermin V. G. Stewart, who is a 1985 veterinary medical graduate from Tuskegee University and furthered his medical education as an MD Otolaryngologist.
Therefore, his presentation to open the symposium is befitting for our theme and exemplifies the legacy of Dr. T. S. Williams, Dean Emeritus of the College.
The Alumni Banquet, which is one of the most highly anticipated features of the Symposium will be held on Friday night, March 22nd honoring the alumni reunion classes of 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969 (50th year - golden class), 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994 (25th year - silver class), 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014. The Symposium continues on Saturday, March 23rd back on campus at the Veterinary Complex and is brought to a successful conclusion on Saturday afternoon with the alumni barbeque and annual basketball game featuring the TUCVM alumni vs. the TUCVM students.
I extend my sincere appreciation to the Symposium Committee under the leadership of Co-Chairs, Mrs. Catina Woods Sistrunk and Dr. Tomeshia Hubbard, for another well-planned, educational, and successful Symposium. We look forward to seeng you next year for the 55th Annual Veterinary Symposium where we will also celebrate our 75th Legacy Anniversary on the founding of our veterinary college at Tuskegee University. So be sure to mark your calendars and please plan to return on March 18-21, 2020.

Greetings Veterinary Alumni, Friends and Supporters
At the 51st and 52nd Annual Veterinary Medical Sympo-siums, the Tuskegee Veterinary Medical Alumni Association (TVMAA) demonstrated the kind of support that has sus-tained the legacy of our beloved alma mater over the many
years since its envision in 1945. In 1935, Dr. Frederick D. Patterson became the third president of Tuskegee Institute and began fulfilling his vision to establish the School of Veterinary Medicine. With over 2,600 alumni, we shall sustain our Legacy and our accreditation.
At the TVMAA business meeting on Thursday, May 31, 2016, the alumni pledged to develop a $250K renovation fund specifically to assist with the renovations of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) required to meet accreditation standards. Due to your loyal support, we exceeded our goal with a grand total of $369,322.45 which was raised at the 52nd Annual Veterinary Medical Symposium held at Tuskegee University on March 22-25, 2017. From our records, this is the largest amount ever raised at any of our annual veterinary medical symposiums in the past. These funds were used to complete Phase II of the renovations in the Veterinary Medical Teach-ing Hospital to fulfill accreditation standard 3, and we achieved full accreditation in October of 2016.
Not only are you making a difference to ensure that we can support the renovations and purchase of equipment needed for the veteri-nary medical teaching hospital required for accreditation, but you are ensuring that future generations of students seeking a veterinary medical education from Tuskegee University may continue to do so! “Sustaining Our Legacy” is truly the mission for the College and you remain an integral part of a sustained legacy since its inception in 1945.
Our Next Charge: As we move forward in preparation for the next AVMA Council on Education site visit scheduled for 2020, we remain “action ready” to meet all 11 accreditation standards and celebrate our 75-year Legacy. In order to stay the course, we are launching the “Sustaining our Legacy $500K Veterinary Alumni Renovation Fund” to assist the College in preparation for the AVMA Council on Educa-tion Site Visit in 2020. Phase I and Phase II have been completed as outlined here. Phase III will include the purchase of major equipment for diagnostic areas in the VMTH, upgrade gross anatomy with a new cooler and HVAC system and upgrade of medical records system.
I extend my heartfelt appreciation to each of you for your contribu-tions to the Alumni Renovation Fund. As the dean and an alum (Class of 1977), I also pledge to continue my financial support to my be-loved veterinary school and will join you in making my contribution to the Alumni Renovation Fund. With the support of each of you for this project and future projects designed to improve the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and learning facilities, a major difference can be achieved.
Again, much thanks to each of you for continuing to help the College hold a special place in the history of veterinary medicine. Your contin-ued support is appreciated more than words can ever express. Thank you Colleagues, Friends and Supporters!

The T.S. Williams Lecture was established in 1978 by the Tuskegee Veterinary Medical Alumni Association, Inc. (TVMAA) Executive Council under the presidential leadership of Dr. Adam E. McKee, Jr. This event honors the late Dr. Theodore Shields Williams, Sr. who served the Tuskegee University (then Tuskegee Institute) School of Veterinary Medicine as the second dean from 1947- 1972. Dr. Williams was born in Kansas City, Kansas on June 2, 1911. He earned the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) de-gree from Kansas State University in 1935, and practiced in Kansas City, Kansas before join-ing the faculty in 1936 at Prairie View State Normal & Industrial College (Prairie View A & M University) in Texas. He was em-ployed by the Federal Meat Inspection Service, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Des Moines, Iowa from 1936-1945. Dr. Williams completed the Master’s degree in Veterinary Pathology in 1946 from Iowa State College (Iowa State University), and his area of research dealt with pathological le-sions associated with tissue invading migra-tory parasites in ani-mals. Dr. Williams was appointed as the Head of the Department of Pathology and Parasitology and served from 1945-1951, and later appointed as dean and served in this role from 1947-1972. Under his deanship, the first class of five students graduated in 1949. He returned to the faculty and served as Professor of Pathology and Parasitology until his retirement in 1981. From 1981 until his death on April 15, 2002, he was dean emeri-tus and professor emeritus at the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. His honors and recogni-tions include the Kansas State University Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1959, the Norden Award for Distinguished Teaching in Veterinary Medicine in 1963,
and the Tuskegee Faculty Achievement Award in 1973.
The lecture series represented the ideals of Dean Emeritus Williams emphasizing the highest standards of scholarship and teaching in advancing veterinary medi-cal education. Veterinary alumni were invited to present topics of interest in a venue supplemental to the regular symposium program. The impact of the presentations on returning veterinarians and students propelled the
lecture series to be-come an integral part of the Annual Veterinary Symposium and con-tinue to be supported by the TVMAA. Dr. T.S. Williams was al-ways present for the presentations until health issues prevented his attendance prior to his death.
The first T. S. Williams lecturer was the late Dr. Laval N. Cothran (’57). Others that fol-lowed included Dr. Adam McKee, Jr., Dr. Rebecca Kirby, Dr. Robert Shomer, Dr. Walter C. Bowie, Dr. Eugene Adams, Dr. Harold Davis, Dr. Michael Blackwell, Dr. Arthur Davis, Dr. Jack O. Walther, Dr. Irving W. McConnell, Dr. Bonnie V. Beaver, Dr. Earl Rippie, Jr, Dr. William O. Jones, Dr. Willie M. Reed, Dr.
Christine Jenkins, Dr. Lloyd Webb, Dr. Phillip Nelson, Dr. Jan Strother, Dr. Stephanie Miles-Richardson, and Dr. Gloria Dorsey. Several accomplished non-alumni veterinary researchers and administrators also presented lecturers including Dr. Russel Lindsey, Dr. Steven Pakes, Dr. Charles (Bud) Middleton, and Dr. Gregory Parham.
The TVMAA continues to serve as a participating part-ner with the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) in support of the T.S. Williams Lecture Series.

T. S. Williams Lecture Speaker
Fermin V.G. Stewart, DVM, MD - Class of 1985
The One Health Initiative is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care for humans, animals and the environment. A coalition of medical, veterinary and Ph.D. doctors signed an agreement that was aimed at fostering closer working relationships between medical health professionals. While veterinary medical training, already versed in the concept of comparative medicine, embraced and forged ahead with the implementation of this initiative within its curriculum, physician training programs did very little to promote the concept, with even recent graduates being unaware of the meaning of One Health.
Dr. Fermin Stewart, having acquired both a DVM and MD, is a veterinarian and medical doctor with intimate understanding of both medical and veterinary training programs and the attitudes and aptitudes of their graduates. His presentation during the symposium will outline what he sees as both challenges
and opportunities facing the One Health initiative, and suggest concrete short term and long term solutions to effectively moving this initiative forward. Dr. Stewart is a member of Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine Class of 1985. He received his Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry in 1981 from Tuskegee Institute. After graduating with his DVM, Dr. Stewart went on to receive an MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. In 1989, he began a residency in otolaryngology at University of Tennessee, Memphis that he completed in 1995. From 1995-1996, he completed a fellowship in otology/neuro-otology at Baylor University. He practiced and taught medicine at Emory University and the Emory University Clinic from 1996 to 2001. In 2001, Dr. Stewart opened his own successful private specialty medical practice which he owns and operates to the present. He has delivered numerous presentations in both the national and international arena.
General Session Speaker
Dr. Horace Errol Walcott - Class of 1984DVM, Ph.D., DHSc, MSPH
Dr. Horace E. Walcott’s current area of research focus is neuroquantology, in which he is investigating, altered states of consciousness in individuals who use the sensory deprivation tank or flotation tank. Dr. Walcott is a science educa-tor and Weston Research Mentor at Brooklyn Tech and a visiting scientist at the Dynamical Systems Laboratory, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, New York University Tandon School of Engineering. He is the co-inventor on a patent for a drone solar hydrogen electric water sampling boat and has been developing an amphibious tranquilizing dart rifle kit, including a spe-cial night vision diving mask. Walcott is a science ambassador for the float com-munity and was awarded a medal by the Policy Studies Institute in Washington, DC. He has been a distinguished panelist at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a national semi-finalist for the 2013 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Award. Dr. Walcott also received in 2010 and 2011, the Siemens Founders Award and the STARS award. His training in aquatic animal
medicine includes thesis research investigating neuroendocrine disruption due to halogenated hydrocarbons on biosonar in harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in British waters in 1997. He also completed the AquaMed program during an internship in Atlanta and AquaVet II at Woods Hole, while commencing doctoral studies at Tulane. At Tulane, Walcott and his major professor Dr. W.R. Hartley developed as bioassay system for detecting sub-lethal, low dose carcinogens, using the life cycle stages of the Japanese Medaka, Orzias latipes. Dr. Walcott has also worked as a veterinary medical officer, Ministry of Agriculture, in Guyana from 1986-1990.
