The fish and shellfish from the Cantábrico Sea are known for their quality and freshness, but if there is one thing that characterises Cantabrian gastronomy it is its variety. In any restaurant in the city you can enjoy the best local products: cheeses, veal, and naturally rabas or calamari slices, an essential feature of our gastronomy. Santander can be divided into seven gastronomic areas which are marked in orange on the map: Vargas-San Fernando-Burgos: These streets hold bars, wine cellars, and restaurants to suit all tastes. Castilla-Hermida-Barrio Pesquero: Ideal for visiting bars in which time seems to have stood still. Calderón de la Barca: This area is ideal either for nibbles or for sitting down to a menu. Plaza Porticada-Pombo: An area for enjoying a peaceful atmosphere that is known for its tapas. Cañadío-Puertochico: A large number of streets offering a wide choice of restaurants. El Sardinero: For those who want to enjoy a good meal with incredible views. La Maruca, San Román and Cueto: Charming spots where you can sample good fish and shellfish. BY TAXI The following taxi companies provide their services in Santander: RADIO TAXI SANTANDER 942 333 333 TELE TAXI 942 369 191 / 942 343 434 BY TUSBIC BIKE This bicycle service is available 24h and 365 days of the year. A total of 200 bikes are available for users and distributed at 15 stations strategically located throughout the city. Information: www.tusbic.es BY TOURIST TRAIN The easiest way of getting to know the Península de La Magdalena is by hopping on the tourist train that runs through the park. The trains are accessible and the carriages are heated in winter. Information: 695 671 845 BY TOURIST BUS These buses also allow you to move about Santander easily. Follow an itinerary and get to know the city and its magnificent panoramic views. Information: www.santandertour.com BY BOAT Two companies allow you to get to know the city from the bay: BAHÍA TOURS www.santanderbahiatours.com LOS REGINAS www.losreginas.com BY CITY BUS Getting around Santander by bus is a good option. A bus ticket costs 1.30€. For your convenience you can buy a rechargeable card at tobacconists' or kiosks. Information: www.tusantander.es BY CAR In the city centre there is a BLUE ZONE (OLA) which operates from 10.00 to 14.00 h and from 16.00 to 20.00 h from Mondays to Fridays and from 10.00 to 14.00 h on Saturdays. The hourly rate is 1.45€ and parking is allowed for up to 2 hours. HISTORY Its origin dates back to Roman times. It was originally known as Portus Victoriae (Port of Victory) and was renamed Portus Sancti Emeterii on the arrival of the heads of San Emeterio and San Celedonio, the patron saints of Santander. King Alfonso VIII granted it a municipal charter in 1187 which led to its economic and social development. In 1248 Cantabrian seamen took part in the conquest of Seville, which is reflected in the coat of arms of Santander with its Tower of Gold, ship, and chains. King Fernando VI awarded it the title of city in 1755 and during the 18th and 19th centuries it became an important commercial port linking Castile with the American colonies. 1893 saw the explosion of the ship Cabo Machichaco and in 1941 there was a great fire that destroyed the city centre. In 1847 the first advertisement of the "Baños de Ola" appeared and Santander became the summer residence of the Royal Family from 1913 to 1930 thanks to the Palacio de La Magdalena, which was a gift from the city. GEOGRAPHY Santander is a linear city of 35 km2 which in addition to the capital of the province also includes the settlements of Cueto, Monte, San Román de la Llanilla and Peñacastillo. It has a maritime climate which means that temperatures vary between 25 degrees in summer and 10 degrees in winter. The city's most outstanding natural feature is its bay, which belongs to the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. There are 13 beaches, three of which face the bay: Los Peligros, La Magdalena, and Bikini, while the remainder face the open sea. The most crowded are those of El Sardinero, where we can find the Beaches of El Camello, La Concha, and the Primera Playa and Segunda Playa (First and Second Beaches) of El Sardinero (the most popular in the city). As smaller, wilder, and less accessible beaches we have those of Los Molinucos and Mataleñas, which are a little further away from the city centre, and those of El Bocal, Rosamunda, and the Virgen del Mar on the north coast. ON FOOT The city centre can be explored on foot as the distances are relatively short. Moreover, the city has a funicular, ramps, and escalators to make movement easy on steep slopes. If you are in Santander for only one day, we recommend a walk from El Sardinero to the city centre via the Palacio de La Magdalena, Puertochico, Centro Botín, and the Cathedral. On completing the route we suggest you wander in the streets to get to know the essence of the city. El Sardinero and its beaches Palacio de La Magdalena Gamazo and Puertochico Centro Botín and Jardines de Pereda (Gardens) Santander Cathedral Day 1 If you have two days to spare we recommend continuing to discover the city. We suggest you begin in the vicinity of the Town Hall Square and then hop on the Río de la Pila funicular so as to contemplate a fine general view of the city from the top. To end the day, why not go to the Cabo Mayor Lighthouse to enjoy the dusk? Santander Town Hall La Esperanza Market Menéndez Pelayo Library Río de la Pila Funicular Cabo Mayor Lighthouse Day 2 For a longer visit we suggest strolling along the Alameda de Oviedo, eating in the Barrio Pesquero (Fishing Quarter) or La Maruca, visiting the Virgen del Mar, walking along the north coast path, and enjoying the views of Peñacastillo. More days SHOPPING PLANS WITH CHILDREN Santander shopping scene is characterized by a great variety of establishments; the most modern and alternative shops coexist with traditional businesses and shops selling specialized products. The shopping areas of the city can be classified in six main groups and are marked on the map in blue: Alameda de Oviedo: Known for its fashion and food shops. Town Hall: Fashion, accessories, and food shops predominate. Cathedral: This area contains most of the best known chains and franchises. Old Quarter: It has become an essential shopping area. Puertochico: It stands out for its specialized shops in all sectors. Barrio Pesquero (Fishing Quarter), Castilla-Hermida: Two wide avenues near the Barrio Pesquero with a wide variety of products to buy. Santander is a perfect destination if you are travelling with children. The Cantabrian capital has a multitude of spaces and activities aimed at kids that will be enjoyed by the whole family. Santander has a large number of cultural events and museums such as MUPAC, Cantabria Maritime Museum, which is ideal for finding out the secrets of the sea and enjoying its impressive aquarium. The planetarium is suitable for children who are always looking at the sky. There are many parks in the city where they can play in the open air, such as the Península de La Magdalena with its recreational area and the marine park, Parque de Mataleñas and its central wood, Parque de las Llamas, or Forestal Park, which is perfect for the most adventurous, to give but a few examples. Another option is to enjoy a sea trip or one of the festivals held throughout the year such as the European Magic and Visuals Fair which is held in May. GASTRONOMY

GETTING ABOUT

SANTANDER IN DAYS

The most traditional gastronomy of Santander is based on products from the sea.

Santander can be divided into seven gastronomic areas which are marked in orange on the map:

Vargas-San Fernando-Burgos: These streets hold bars, wine cellars, and restaurants to suit all tastes.

BY CARIn the city centre there is a BLUE ZONE (OLA) which operates from 10.00 to 14.00 h and from 16.00 to 20.00 h from Mondays to Fridays and from 10.00 to 14.00 h on Saturdays. The hourly rate is 1.45€ and parking is allowed for up to 2 hours.

HISTORYIts origin dates back to Roman times.

GEOGRAPHYSantander is a linear city of 35 km2 which in addition to the capital of the province also includes the settlements of Cueto, Monte, San Román de la Llanilla and Peñacastillo.

ON FOOTThe city centre can be explored on foot as the distances are relatively short.
