Background (Copied from the Tuncurry Golf Club website) The Tuncurry course is the hidden gem on the Mid North Coast, and very few players leave this course

untouched by its natural beauty. It was designed by Kel Nagle and Mike Cooper and carved out of the

seaside bush land in Northern Tuncurry by the members. The championship layout is sure to test

golfers of all skill levels. Demanding from the tee, the rolling couch fairways and relatively flat putting

surfaces reward the player that drives the ball well from the tee. The Banksia and Tea Tree rough have

been thinned out over the years thanks to the great work from volunteers to make playing this great

layout more user friendly. The course has the great ability to handle rain in extended wet periods; the

sand base keeps the course in perfect playing conditions when surrounding clubs are closed for days and

weeks. The old clubhouse has plenty of character to add to the charm of the course. It’s well worth a

game and not to be missed if you’re passing through the area.

Course Review Plan Why is a golf course review necessary?

The Board had asked me to conduct a golf course review plan. In which I have made suggestions as to

how the course can be improved and updated for today’s equipment.

Main changes to the golf course are:

• There are no added fairway bunkers and only 4 greenside bunkers included in the review.

• 3 greens will be enlarged to allow for more hole locations.

• Soft undulations and mounding added for short game options around the greens.

• Removal of selected large pines on the right side of the 3rd fairway.

• Removal of all lomandra grasses, asparagus weeds and dead banksia trees burnout by the bushfires.

Whilst keeping with the original designers visual of Kel Nagle and Michael Cooper.

This is completed to indicate as to how the golf course can be improved with minor changes that will

leave golfers with a more enjoyable course to play.

Happy Golfing

1st Hole Par 4 355m 338m 328m 273m 258m

Green is 465m2

Tee

• Reshape tee by extending 2 metres to the left.

• Remove right hand side by 2 metres.

• This lines the tee up better with the fairway and tree line.

Bunker

• New greenside bunker added on the right hand side.

3rd Hole Par 4 337m 330m 322m 264m 262m

Green is 298m2

Tee

• Remove forward green tee, as it is not needed.

Fairway

• Removal of selected pines that affect the way in which the hole plays. Allowing good drives to be rewarded with a clear shot to the green.

Green

• Extend the green back and to the left giving more hole locations.

4th Hole Par 3 163m 155m 114m 111m 105m

Green is 394m2

Bunkers

• One new bunker added to left greenside.

• Pointless to add any more bunkers as these would not be seen from the tee.

5th Hole Par 5 494m 478m 469m 422m 422m

Green is 304m2

No changes for this hole. As it is a wonderful par 5 that already has

enough trouble awaiting the wayward shot.

6th Hole Par 4 378m 368m 332m 336m 328m

Green is 278m2

This is a long and demanding straight away par 4. Having a small

narrow green is enough of a defence to intimidate any golfer.

Green

• Re-cut grass shorter around the green. This will allow players to play different approach shots from around the green.

7th Hole Par 4 379m 361m 353m 307m 283m

Green is 308m2

Green

• Extend the front right-hand side of green towards the bunker allowing for more hole locations along the right side of green.

• Increasing the size of the green by 48m².

Another wonderful par 4 with two well placed fairway bunkers that need to be avoided. The small green sloping back to front is the ideal design for such a hole.

8th Hole Par 5 452m 440m 426m 385m 372m

Green is 334m2

Tee

• Reshape forward tee box for additional tee space.

• This will line up better with the fairway tree line.

Fairway

• Remove sandy waste area and reshape with grass undulations and swales to match in with fairway.

• Short cut grass will allow players to play different approach shots from off the green short right.

9th Hole Par 3 140m 130m 120m 120m 93m

Green is 213m2

Fairway

• Soft mounding added to the rear of the green.

• Re-cut grass at rear of the green shorter allowing players to play different approach shots from around the green.

10th Hole Par 4/5 433m 392m 378m 418m 360m

Green is 525m2

Tee

• Remove bushes that are 20 metres off the front right of the tee box.

• Reshape Black tee to the left as it aligns the tee and fairway better.

Green

• Re-cut grass shorter around the green. This will allow players to play different approach shots from around the green.

These minor changes are cost effective and will change the hole dynamic from the tee shot through to the approach shot.

11th Hole Par 5 462m 441m 422m 417m 363m

Green is 269m2

Bunker

• Enlarge and reshape left greenside bunker. So that can be seen whilst hitting the approach shot into the green.

Green

• Enlarge green putting surface on both front right and rear. Allowing for more hole locations.

• Green size would change from 269m² to 407m².

12th Hole Par 4 336m 323m 311m 304m 289m

Green is 485m2

Tee

• Level the existing teeing area.

Fairway

• Re-cut the grass around green shorter allowing players to play various approach shots from around the green.

Only minor alterations are needed, as the hole has many undulations

that give the golfers uneven lies and a variety of shots.

Green is 500m2

Fairway

• Re-cut the right side of green shorter allowing different approach shots to be played.

This is the longest par 3 on the course which doesn’t need any additional bunkers or difficulty added due to the challenging length and surrounding undulations.

Page 19: Tuncurry Course Review Plan By Craig Parry Design November ... · Practice Green and Practice Fairway • Re-cut the practice fairway wider. • Remove both practice bunkers and add

Green is 448m2

Tee

• Re-cut the right side of green shorter to allow different approach shots.

The 15th is a strong par 5 with many options to play this hole.

Tee

• New tee added to right side.

• Pruning of large eucalyptus & pine trees along left side.

• Will allow the forward left tee to be used.

Fairway

• Re-cut the right side of green shorter to allow different approach shots to be played.

293m Green is 429m2

Fairway

• Remove the lomandra grasses through the fairway.
