Vena Cava FilterThe purpose of vena cava filters is to prevent pulmonary embolisms by intercepting thrombotic material (blood clots) within the inferior vena cava.

MR Imaging of Vena Cava Filter (VCF)MRI of conventional VCF is significantly compromised due to the magnetic susceptibility and RF artifact of the devices.
Catheterization followed by X-ray angiography with iodine contrast agent are required to image the VCF.
Remnant thrombus clots are not directly visible, thus timing for removal of the filter is difficult.
