“We tend to think of acruise ship as a travelingbank vault,” he said, not-ing the potential for peo-ple on cruise ships tospend time and money ina local community.

Funding sources forthe project included pro-ceeds from the sale of theHemlock and Canadicelakes watershed to thestate, federal and stategrants, and the city’s cap-ital improvement pro-gram.

Fifty-four of the boatslips in the marina are be-ing rented on a seasonalbasis, beginning at$2,800. Twenty-two slipshave already been rent-ed.

The remaining 30 slipsare rented on a short-term basis up to twoweeks.

The cost for the mari-na project is $22 million.Much of the excavatedslag from the marina hasbeen trucked to Lexing-ton Street, where it wasused to create a pad for asolar farm planned on a

former city-owned land-fill.

The marina was origi-nally scheduled to open inthe spring of 2015, but is-sues between the originalcontractor, The Pike Co.,and the city about soilconditions at the site, aswell as the cost and de-sign of the project,caused a parting of theways.

As a result, the cityhired Spencerport-basedCrane-Hogan to finish ex-cavating the basin.

Related plans are inthe works for a private

developer to construct a10-story building with ahotel, condominiums andsome commercial spaceon what is now city-owned land.

The 129,000-square-foot building, located onvacant land at the south-east corner of Lake Ave-nue and Corrigan Street,will cost about $40 mil-lion.

The city’s plans for thearea have drawn opposi-tion from some residentsin the group CharlotteStrong who questionedthe viability and site ofthe project.

Think Chimney BluffsState Park, where numer-ous offshoots haveemerged atop the famousBluff Trail. Follow one ofthem blindly and you’llwalk right off a cliff.

If a hiker gets hurt af-ter leaving a designatedtrail, it becomes far hard-er for friends, park staffor police to find that in-jured and/or missing per-son.

Plus some trails — likethe Finger Lakes Trailthroughout the state andthe Crescent Trail in Pe-rinton — are on privateland. Landowners havegiven permission for pub-lic use of the path, but notfor people to venture offon their own.
