Project 1:Tommee Tippee Perfect PrepTM Machine MK 2
Objective: Find a mechanical way to dissolve the baby powder...
and make it take off somehow!
≈
Problem at handFinding a mechanical way to dissolve the powder
Is it as simple as one may think? NO!
Powder added to water Water added to powder
Beaker, tap water temperature
Background
‘Baby evolution’66% of customers gave a 5
star rating on Amazon
Therefore the Perfect PrepTM machine is good, but not perfect!
Methods
Investigate the effects of:• Temperature• Flow rate• Installation of mechanical parts• Shape of pod
TemperatureHigher tank temperaturesDisconnect thermostatAdd hot waterVary the temperature and determine how well the powder dissolves
Thermometer is set to read at room temperature and therefore any temperature can be tested
Temperature (°C) Percentage Mixed

I tested from a temperature range of 50-80 degrees Celsius with a composition of an 8Oz (33.6g) cycle of water, supplying 4Oz (16.8g) of baby powder,Table showing the effect of temperature on mixing the baby powder- the baby milk was dispensed in a bottle (Not in test pod)Table showing the effect of temperature on mixing the baby powder- the baby milk was dispensed in a bottle (Not in test pod)Table showing the effect of temperature on mixing the baby powder- the baby milk was dispensed in a bottle (Not in test pod)

Flow Rate
An extra pump has been installed parallel
Flow regulators are doubled and in parallel
Boost flow rateTurn up PRV (Pressure relief valve)Use a second pumpTwo parallel flow regulators and pumps
0.6mm Jet
Jet demo test video
Closer look at the jet test – does it lift up powder?
Jet in from side of cup.wmv
Structure of the pod
Beaker:•Flat base•Easier settlement•Hard to uplift and move the powder
Cone:•Converging shape•Encourages circular flow•Vortex effect•Easier to lift the powder and make it dissolve
Mechanical proposals- using a whisk
Beaker Conical Funnel
Adding the ‘water to powder’ at tap water temperature
Adding the ‘water to powder’ at 30°C

Project 2:Strix Steamer Blender
Objective:• Develop a competitive Steamer Blender
So that it retains more nutrients
BackgroundWhat is a steamer blender?• Steams vegetables/meat
and blends it!• Method to prepare baby
food• Alternative to buying
premade baby food in supermarkets
• For babies between 3-12 months
Tommee Tippee ruling the baby market?
Method• Nutrient research• Understanding the
chemistry of the reaction• Making a Vitamin C
titration test• Create reliable and
reproducible results
Nutrient researchAnalysing vitamins
Vitamin Chemical structureSoluble in
waterStability
Boiling Point (°C)
A NoFairly stable, changes with
heat 181
B12 Yes Stable >300
C Yes
Very unstable:
oxidizes in air and water,
heat sensitive
553
E No Stable 210
Most favourable vitamin to
test, due to its
instability!
Understanding the reaction
Broccoli has lots of vitamin C
The enzyme governs this reaction
Creating the Vitamin C test
Performing a titration:
Definition: Quantitative chemical analysis that is used to determine the
unknown concentration of a solution.......Wiki
• Green colour when Vitamin C is still present
• Blue colour when all Vitamin C has reacted
• At the precise moment the sample permanently changes colour, we are able to know the amount of Vitamin C in the sample
• Video demonstration: VIDEO0016.3gp
Results of testing
End result: Strix steamer blender retains the most Vitamin C and therefore holds more nutrients
