Trust News goes digital

From 2014, electronic versions of Trust News magazine and Trust Newsletter will be available on our website.

This is part of the Trust’s shift towards the better utilisation of technology to provide information for our members and supporters.

The advantages of using electronic media to distribute information include avoiding the escalating costs of printing and distribution, providing more timely information, having more flexibility in formats and lay-outs and also saving a few trees.

All Queensland National Trust members, including Green Guardian members, will still receive printed copies of the magazine and newsletter until June 2014.

From July 2014, Trust members can choose to receive printed copies of our magazines. To register, please ring on (07) 3223 6666 or email [email protected]

To further improve the information we provide for our members, NTQ is also introducing monthly e-news bulletins in 2014. To sign up for our e-news, go to our website www.nationaltrust.org.au/qld

Take a journey through Brisbane in 1942 with Garrison Town, an exciting choose-your-own-adventure story trail through the CBD. Immerse yourself in the story of siblings Patrick and Rosie and discover more about life in the city during World War Two. Using a smart phone and the Garrison Town map follow the story online and through the streets. Help Rosie when she becomes entangled in Patrick’s underage enlistment trouble, but watch out for simmering tensions between Australian and Yankee soldiers.

The Garrison Town self guided tour is free but you will need a smart phone or tablet with internet connection or data allowances and a QR Code reader application.

Head to GarrisonTown.com.au for a map then take to the streets to walk through the story…

President’s Message

The National Trust of Queensland’s 2014 Heritage Festival is now in full swing with over 100 events across Queensland for you to enjoy.

This year’s theme, Journeys, is very appropriate as we celebrate the achievements of the Trust during its first 50 years and we start a new journey as a company. We certainly

hope this new structure will ensure the Trust is here to promote Queensland’s heritage for another 50 years.

The process of becoming a company is progressing well indeed. The amendments to the existing legislation have been tabled in parliament and have been referred to committee for review. After it returns to parliament for approval, probably in May, we will then be able to lodge the application to establish the company.

The nine First Directors of the company have been selected and are members of the current National Trust Council and the Board of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. These First Directors have already met as a committee to start planning for a smooth transition.

We are also making a valuable contribution to many of the Trusts’ national projects and sincerely acknowledge the support of the Australian Government’s Department of the Environment for these projects.

The National Register of Significant Trees is now up and running and can be found at www.trusttrees.org.au Also, the National Trust of Queensland’s Heritage Register is being uploaded to our website in stages, and our first Australian Curriculum Schools Programs for Wolston House and Royal Bull’s Head Inn are there as well.

Northern Links to China

The Fifth “no fuss” Conference organised by Chinese Heritage in Northern Australia Inc took place in Cairns in February. Entitled “Northern Links: Chinese Networks and Nation”, the many papers explored the rich Chinese heritage of the northern regions of Australia.

The topics covered by the papers frequently highlighted the great difficulties faced by Chinese immigrants in the late 19th century in entering Australia, pursuing their business interests and returning to visit their families in China or reuniting with them in Australia. Of great interest to anyone from Cooktown were the papers dealing with the heritage of that region, particularly that of Darryl Low Choy, whose family travelled to the Palmer River Goldfields in the early days of the rush. Stephen Gapps from the Australian National Maritime Museum also offered a tantalising insight into Chinese boat building activities during the early years of the settlement in Cooktown. Jonathan Richards explored the fascinating practice of Chinese exhumations and repatriation in Queensland, while Carol Chong shared her own family’s experience of Aboriginal and Chinese kinship, an intriguing and relatively hitherto neglected area of Chinese/Australian history.

As well as attending the paper sessions, delegates had the opportunity to take part in several tours of significant Chinese heritage sights, including Cairns Chinatown, with a viewing of the beautiful Lit Sung Goong Temple artefacts, and the National Trust Hou Wang Miau Temple at Atherton. The conference demonstrated the increasing enthusiasm and interest for this previously neglected area of northern Australian heritage. We look forward with interest to the next instalment.
