The Hoka Revolution By Jenny Barker # 736

Let's be honest, when Graham Ridley rocked up to Trotters 2 years ago in his platform trainers we all thought he looked daft. It was like he'd just come from a 70's

fancy dress party and yet he was thinking of running in this super padded, weirdly shaped, height compensation footwear. But Graham has had the last laugh, and he has initiated a Hoka explosion within the more senior members of Trotters... apparently they are good for the old joints, those who thought their running days were coming to an end have seen an extension to the fun and joy of battling for a car parking space at 5.30am every Saturday before a spirit rousing run with Trotters. These platform shoes might all look the same but there are in fact numerous different varieties... 3 lots are trail specific and 3 others are road specialities. There are the low, medium or high padding varieties depending on what you are doing, Hoka's use the more professional adjectives of plus, full and ultimate though PhD's in maths are then required as they talk about 'midsole volume coefficients' which are used to calculate what level of protection each shoe gives. Just arrived in shops and websites near you is a new variety - the non-slip Hokas... so now there should be no complaints on a rainy time trial day when the enthusiasts say they would have gone faster if they hadn't been doing Torvill and Dean impressions on the greasy road surface. This new edition is called the Conquest Tarmac and boosts something called a 'unique engineered water drainage system'... in normal English this just means you can run through puddles with confidence.

www.terrigaltrotters.com.au

From anecdotal experience Hokas are not for everyone, if you run on your forefront then the rolling motion might not work for you and it could feel like you are on your Grandma's rocking chair. If you have narrow feet then you might be slipping around the shoe with room to spare, borrowing a pair off one of the

enthusiasts might be the way forward to make sure they are good for you. From comments in the group the uplift is good in protecting your ankles, knees and hips but it is a long way down if you turn your ankle on Kincumba Mountain. And finally some Trotters are never for turning, one member who may remain nameless (but his Trotter number is 658) recently met a chap at a play date for their sons. Mr Nameless was introduced as a Trotter, the new chap asked if Nameless wears Hokas, 'Huh, I would not be seen dead in those' replied Nameless Trotter. 'Oh' replied the new chap, 'my name is Ian Thomas and I am the national sales and marketing manager for the company that promotes Hokas'. Oops!!!

Aquathon Summer Series #3. Thursday 6 February 2014

Hawaii Ironnmen Take 1st and 2nd

The talent scouts were out for our 3rd aquathon to find someone that could beat Mark Dunlop in the final aquathon for the summer. They succeeded and it took a Hawaii Ironman to beat him. Actually, Mark ended up 3rd behind two Hawaii Ironmen: Chris Fuchs and Stuart Baverstock.

Chris Fuchs, our most recent Ironman pulled away in the second lap of the run winning comfortably. Stuart and Mark battled it out for 2nd with Stuart winning the battle. It was great to see first timer at the Aquathon, Mark Andrews (coincidentally also an Ironman), and returning athletes Joel Green & Ian Temblett going hard as always. The females were there in full force giving their support, with only myself racing on the day. On the junior side, we had some great performances from Tristan Byrne (with his Dad, Kevin, by his side) & Eric Ridley (paced by Dad, Graham). Mark Dunlop does retain some bragging rights, being the overall Aquathon Summer Series Champion by winning 2 of the 3 events. Well done, Mark – you put in some very strong performances. After the formalities of the event were over, it was time for the actual reason we all turn up on a Thursday evening: our group dinner after. This was enjoyed by everyone and the menu was BYO pizza, noodles, fish and chips. A big thanks to everyone that turned up over the series and particularly to the spectators who provided their support and great company.

Winner 2013/14 Aquathon Mark Dunlop

We aim to have a similar training event next summer toward the end of the year and encourage all to come and have a go including kids. Mel McDonald #837

The First Friday Walkers On Good Friday 2013, a small group of walkers from Trotters, made a train trip to Newcastle where we walked from Nobby’s breakwater, along the beaches & returned via Cooks Hill. The excursion was enjoyed by all & someone had the brilliant idea that we could meet once a month on a Friday to enjoy a walk & share a cuppa. Since then we have been meeting on the first Friday of each month & have explored a variety of courses. We are not exclusively members of the Trotters, with several friends of Trotters joining us regularly. For our February walk ten ladies met at 9.30 am at Memorial Park, The Entrance. We crossed over The Entrance Bridge to follow trails along the sand-dunes & return via the bike track that winds its way through the Sensory Garden & reserve on the northern side of the bridge. We were also joined by Wendy O’Shea who had cycled from her house to meet us for lunch after the walk. While this walk covered approximately 6 kms, our other walks have varied in distance & difficulty, but are usually no longer than 10 kms. We take our time to enjoy the views along the way & make the most of any photo opportunities. In this way we cater for a range of fitness levels. We usually bring a sandwich & a snack to eat on the walk as well as plenty of water, but we all enjoy stopping at a café for a cuppa afterwards! In the past Wendy has been our photographer, responsible for taking & sharing photos from the walks with those who have participated on the day. If you think that either you or someone you know would be interested in joining us for a walk on the first Friday of the month, please speak with Lynn Bromwich, Sharyn Smith or Lorraine Cooke at Trotters on a Saturday morning. Alternatively you can e-mail Lynn at: [email protected] Next walk: Meet at Ferry Road, Ettalong at 9.30 am on Friday 7th March, 2014.

Inaugural Unsanctioned Skillion Challenge Results

8 February 2014

Congratulations to those who chose to take up the challenge. In all I believe we completed about 650 round trips to the top to “Terrigal Skillion”, not a bad effort for a totally unorganised, unstructured mob. Everyone who started achieved a PB and smashed their personal goals. Some of the stand outs were: Cathy Donnet, who increased the Ladies World record for “Non-Stop –Running” the skillion from 63 repeats to a huge 71 repeats running followed by 5 cool downs. Viv, who set a new record for repeats carrying a 15kg back pack for 4 hours, how much fun can you have in one morning??? Graham Fowler, a true gentleman, set a new Men’s Run-Walk record of 101 repeats. Paul Davison smashed his personal goal of 57 and came in with 61 repeats. Kara Cannon took out the under 9s event and completed 12 repeats as well as being a huge help to me on the night. Sue Ingham smashed Jo McCarthy 40’s repeats on the night completing 45 repeats (well done mum). I personally completed 101 repeats and enjoyed every moment of the challenge. But the real stand out for me was Margaret Vaughan who with Kay Worrall beside her managed to achieve an inspiring number of repeats and demonstrated to all who observed what a determined athlete she really is. A heartfelt thank you to all the Terrigal Trotters who turned up at the Skillion and supported us. In particular Mark A, Ed, Kevin B & Dave N. A very special thankyou to my wife Karen for staying awake to record each and every lap we did.

Hi Trotters,

We are nearly ¾ of the way through the Trotters year.

Our club competitions have being going well and competition is fierce especially amongst the leaders in

the Time Trial Aggregate.

We will give you a final look at the progress points this month and then keep them a secret until the

presentations in July.

There is still plenty of time to improve your scores, do some more events, attend some Saturday morning runs

or start planning your strategy for next year.

Detailed progress points for all Trotters can be found on

the Trotters website.

Thank you to Dave Byrnes for maintaining the Super 7 and

Time Trial Aggregate spreadsheets this year and

providing monthly updates for the newsletter.

Annual Running Competitions

Terrigal Trotters makes a number of awards each year (1 July to 30 June) to recognize the running

achievements of its members. To be eligible for any of the awards, a member must have recorded no less than fourteen (14) attendances at Saturday morning Trotters’ runs. Only performances achieved after a member has earned their official Trotter Number by

completing ten (10) recorded Saturday morning runs will count.

SUPER 7 SERIES

This series was first conducted during the 2002-03 race year. It is a point score series where the best seven (7) races of a member are averaged over the year to determine the highest scorer. Points are determined using the World Masters Athletics Road Age Standards which allocate points to performances based on the age and gender of the athlete. The member with the highest average point score wins, and trophies are awarded to the top seven (7) finishers in the competition. The competition rules are as follows:

1. Members can earn points in the following events:

a. A maximum of four Terrigal Trotters 10km Time Trials. Because the Charles Kay Hill Time is a tough (slow) course, it is treated as being the flat distance equivalent (FDE) of 10.4km, and points are calculated accordingly.

b. One of the Gold Coast Airport, Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km (July)

c. Sydney Harbour 10km (July)

d. One of the Hunter Valley Marathon and Half Marathon (July)

e. City to Surf (August)

f. Lake Macquarie Running Festival Half Marathon (August)

g. One of Blackmores Sydney Running Festival Marathon and Half Marathon (September)

www.terrigaltrotters.com.au

h. One of the Melbourne Marathon Festival Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km (October)

i. Central Coast 10km Track Championship Mingara (September)

j. Run 4 Fun 10km Homebush (October)

k. One of the Central Coast Half Marathon and 10km (November)

l. One of the Cadbury Hobart Marathon and Half Marathon (January)

m. Six Foot Track Marathon (March)

n. One of the Australian Running Festival (Canberra) 50k, Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km (April)

o. The Sydney 10km Homebush (May)

p. Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon (May)

q. One of the Macleay River Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km (June)

r. Woodford to Glenbrook 25km (June)

2. The finishing times of all participants will be adjusted for age and gender using the “WMA Road Age Standards” tables. This will give a rating for the performance out of 1,000.

3. Where 'gun time' and 'net time' are measured, then the time included is the 'net time'.

4. The seven (7) best scores will be averaged for each participant, subject to the limitations specified in Point 1, above.

5. For other than the Terrigal Trotters Time Trials, it will be the responsibility of the participant to notify the Results Coordinator of their race results.

6. It is a condition of entry to the competition that you enter races in your own name! That is, you cannot compete under another runner’s name if they pre-enter and then withdraw for reasons such as injury, illness etc.

www.terrigaltrotters.com.au

TIME TRIAL AGGREGATE POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP

This is a point score series where all the Time Trial performance points of a member are aggregated over the year to determine the highest scorer. Points are determined using the World Masters Athletics Road Age Standards which allocate points to performances based on the age and gender of the athlete. The member with the highest total point score wins, and trophies are awarded to the top three finishers in the competition. The competition rules are as follows:

1. Members can earn points in all Terrigal Trotters 10km Time Trials. Because the Charles Kay Hill Time is a tough (slow) course, it is treated as being the flat distance equivalent (FDE) to 10.4km, and points are calculated accordingly.

2. The finishing times of all participants will be adjusted for age and gender using the “WMA Road Age Standards” tables. This will give a rating for the performance out of 1,000.

3. All points scored will be totalled for each participant.

Thanks Bruce

After 12 years in the “hot seat”, Life Member Trotter # 65 Bruce Renwick, has decided to hand over the reins as time trial coordinator. Trotters Time Trials are an important part of our running schedule with many of our members using them to gauge their fitness, often incorporating them into their training program when preparing for events. Bruce’s dedication to the role and attention to detail has ensured that time trials run smoothly and runners results are recorded accurately, with runners always greeted with a friendly smile at the finish line. As with many of the official roles undertaken by our members, there is much work done behind the scenes that often goes unnoticed, what you see on Time Trial day is only part of what Bruce does for our club. February will be the last time Bruce coordinates the Trotters Time Trial, so be sure to say an extra thanks as you hand him your place card and have your name recorded. I for one have benefitted greatly from the contribution Bruce has made to our club, so on behalf of the Committee and all our members I would like to say thanks mate. I look forward to seeing Bruce ”Runquick” out there on the time trial course participating with the rest of us, I’m sure he will be racking up plenty of Super 7’s points in no time at all. Volunteers Needed

The 2014 Bay to Bay will be upon us soon, so the call for the volunteers will be going out. To ensure the amazing success of the Bay to Bay we will be asking Trotters, their family and friends to donate their time throughout the day. Many Trotters already have their usual location and duties for the day and we encourage you to make contact with your location captains ASAP to confirm your intentions for this year’s 2014 event. We have introduced a Volunteers Co-ordinator (Me) for the B2B to provide new trotters, family and friends a central register to allocate a location/duty for this year’s event. We have expanded to include a successful Children's Fun Run and Half Marathon therefore Trotters are required far and wide across the event. Over the next few weeks post Saturday runs I will be taking names from those members who are yet to have a volunteer spot and are able to give us your time for the day. Remember, this is our premier event for the year and we raise some serious money for local charities so your time volunteering is well spent.

Points are determined using the World Masters Athletics Road Age Standards which allocate points to performances based on the age and gender of the athlete. The competition rules are as follows:

1. Any performance over the year on a certified (and verifiable) Half

Marathon or Marathon course is eligible.

2. It must be the competitor’s first ever Half-Marathon or Marathon, not simply their first as a member of Trotters.

3. The competitor must not have previously completed an event longer than a Half Marathon to be eligible for the Debut Half Marathon Award, or longer than a Marathon to be eligible for the Debut Marathon Award.

4. Competitors must be over 18 years of age to be eligible for the Debut Marathon award.

5. Competitors must notify the Results Coordinator of their performance and confirm that it is their debut.

6. The finishing times of all participants will be adjusted for age and gender using the “WMA Road Age Standards” tables. This will give a rating for the performance out of 1,000.

7. Where 'gun time' and 'net time' are measured, then the time included is the 'net time'.

If you believe you are eligible for this award please email

[email protected] to ensure that I have your result. Yondi
