Culture and Heritage

There is no question that the history of trade and colonization have resulted in the unique evolution of culture in every country and province throughout Southeast Asia region and most of them developed its own unique identity in the areas of religion, art and communal structure. One can only impress by the perfect of culture blend when visiting place like Borobudur in Yogyakarta, Angkor Wat in Siem Reap or Laos’s Luang Prabang.

In most cases, the old history of mixture between the local and the foreigners’ culture creates a perfect balance and deliver fascinating feelings for those who appreciate history and beauty. Places like Penang and Malacca have managed to maintain their historical landmarks despite the encroachment of modern development. It is in these and many others that visitors can enjoy discovering the history and stories behind the buildings.

In this edition, we feature some fascinating hotel destinations like the beautiful colonial structure of Hotel Majapahit in Surabaya, the huge collection of artworks and antiques of The Majestic Malacca and Bali’s own gem, Hotel Tugu. For those who are looking for a city of traditional culture, Solo should not be missed.

In line with our theme, we present some of the culinary venues that serve up delicious Indonesian local dishes such as Café Degan, Tapis Restaurant, and Banyubiru where a Balinese blessing is given before dinner.

This is the 10th Anniversary of MixMedia and to celebrate, we are conducting a “Tropical Life Online Photo Contest”. one of the prob-lems face in selecting holiday destination is the o ve r whe lm ing choice at one fi-

ngertips. Places to stay, good restau-rants, attentive service, access to nature and scenery as well as point of interest are all standard prerequisites for a suc-cessful holiday. Of course accommoda-tion is one of the most essential parts in having a fine vacation. In these days of modernity, high tech facilities are obviously expected if not always required. However, most of the thrill of getting away on a well-earned holiday to foreign parts is the feeling that you are really in a different part of the world. I don’t want to travel overseas to end up in a room, albeit a luxury room, that I can find close to my own place of residence. I think, hotel or resort design should be influenced by the culture of its environment or at least the property uti-lizes some elements of the traditional style to its architecture or interior. In this edition, we feature some exciting resort destinations that really do bring their local culture into play for visitors. The Reef on Gili Meno blends perfectly with nature while offering all the comfort and amenities one expects.

Pandawa Cliff Estate with its clever Balinese design features and tropical gardens has incorporated modern facilities and comfort with all this. The “5 Best Beach Getaway” presents some truly remarkable destinations of attractive scenic environments. Destina-tion choices here offer some unforgettable holiday experiences. As we all aware Bali has become a holi-day destination that has now reached new heights with its culinary choices. Restau-rants for all tastes flourish here. Style, presentation and just good food have brought Bali to the attention of world gourmets. Featured in this issue are Cut Catch Cucina at Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort, Kayuputi at St. Regis Bali Resort, Locavore and Urchin Spas are also highlighted in this issue including The Spa at Bulgari Hotels & Resorts for an experience of pure pamper. Enjoy this edition, travel safe and have a happy holiday!

Sited facing the pristine, wave-sung sunset beach of Canggu

and flanked by the Batu Bolong Temple and to roll of rice

history and culture.

The Hotel’s lobby is a structure of extravagant beauty and

villas here are set just steps from the beach.

The Red Puri Le Mayeur villa is the largest and grandest

of the two villas here. This villa is often described by local

folklore as “The Sexy Villa” as its construction was inspired

by the love story of Belgian artist Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de

Merpres who in 1932 moved to Bali in with Ni Polok,

a beautiful Legong dancer and Adrien-Jean’s model.

The villa has an area of 200 square meters and is designed

to appear as if floating on its own 700 square meter lotus

pond as it faces the Indian Ocean. The Puri Le Mayeur villa is

furnished some of the original carved furniture of Le Mayeur

as well as some of the furniture carved by his blind wood

carver. It was Ni Polok who made all this available. The villa

also features a charming bedroom, a wonderful outdoor bath,

a private plunge pool, and a veranda from where striking

sunsets can be witnessed. If you wish to have a romantic

dinner under the star, there is an intimate dining hut for two

A novel way to experience the charm of Malacca is to book accommodation

at the historic Majestic Malacca. Here the spoils of colonial luxury are

available to all. The Majestic Malacca is regarded as the best hotel in

Malacca and is where the art and architecture of history combine with the

pomp and ceremony of exceptional service.

The lobby of this historic hotel is small by todays standards but one is

made to feel privileged on entering and once taken in, the lobby will time

warp one back to another age. Leather upholstery, teakwood fittings,

Straits Chinese porcelain tiles and in ones imagination, the hiss fizz of soda

siphons pointed down to whisky, the white linen suits of the patrons and

the graceful curl of cigar smoke as it heads up to the rafters. No real need

to imaging though, the linen suits may be gone but the rest of it is all there

to enjoy.

The UNESCO World Heritage city of

Majestic Malacca houses the Mansion

A great deal of effort has been made to

present this new wing as complementary

to the original mansion. Careful selection

of furniture, soft furnishings and

colours has allowed the rooms to meld

well with state of the art technology.

My room was one of the deluxe king

rooms with a view of the Malacca River

and the city. I was very impressed with

the overall comfort of my room and the

effective charm it had on me.

To get a better understanding of

Malacca’s history I availed myself to the

hotel’s complimentary historical walk.

This is a fascinating excursion and is

led by the hotel’s own historian. Setting

off at 10 a.m. I spent a very informative

and enjoyable 2 hours through the city’s

historical sites and the 600-year-old

port.

I can’t leave Malacca without

mentioning Spa Village Malacca. Here

I selected the palm sugar and honey

body scrub, this was most relaxing

treatment. The spa provides treatments

based on the healing heritage of the

Baba-Nyonya, a unique combination

of Chinese and Malay influences.

The indulgence didn’t stop with my

treatment. I had a delightful session of

Afternoon Tea with cakes, sandwiches,

freshly baked scones and of course, tea.

My stay at The Majestic Malacca was a

fascinating trip into a long gone past

but with just enough if its glory to make

me feel wanted and important. This is

certainly a hotel that I will return to.

5 Best Culture & Heritage Destinations

in Southeast Asia

Here I have listed 5 Southeast Asia holiday Destinations that should appeal to

those who enjoy sharing and/or observing some of the local cultural and historical

aspects of their chosen holiday destination. So often the value of holiday memories

are enhanced by an interaction with locals and an appreciation of the cultural

background.

The rapid growth of Southeast Asia holiday resorts and tourist facilities that have

played an important part in the area’s growth and stability, drawing millions of

visitors a year to the region. However, it has been long recognised that the intrinsic

draw value of any destination is soundly based on a state’s ability to preserve

and visually promote the unique aspects and its culture and historical sites. The

combination of modern facilities, tropical beaches, islands and lush hinterlands with

the visual exposure of exotic cultures has become the successful formula for the

most enjoyable of holidays.

Bali, IndonesiaBali’s earliest inhabitants have been traced back as far as 2000 BC

but it was Indian and Chinese influences along with Hinduism in

the 1st century AD that created the lasting cultural milieu that is so

iconic of Bali today. Despite the overwhelming adaption to tourism

the Balinese have maintained their age-old culture for the last 1,000

years and their colourful religious displays and processions have

become a major tourist attraction.

One of the most popular cultural sites on Bali is the Tanah Lot

Temple that sits on a large rock just offshore in the Tabanan regency.

Founded in the 16th century by Dang Hyang Nirartha to appease

the Sea Gods, this temple is one of Bali’s largest tourist draws. Tide

erosion has meant that access is restricted to local deities but both

the site and the amazing sunsets produce a remarkable spectacle.

Perched on a cliff top overlooking the Indian Ocean, Pura Luhur

Uluwatu is considered an architectural wonder. Built in large part

of black coral rock the temple is one of the 8 Kahyangan Jagat holy

temples that are spread across the island. From here a magnificent

view of the South Western Bali peninsula can be had.

Yogyakarta, IndonesiaThe city of art and culture, Yogyakarta is the capitol of the Yogyakarta

historical buildings. Of the most visited of all the sites here is the

9th century Borobudur, the largest Mahanyana Buddhist Temple in

the world. Built by King Samaratungga of the Wangsa Dynasty in 824

AD this shrine has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Toped by three circular platforms the temple contains 2,600 relief

panels and around 500 Buddha statues. This edifice to the dynasty

lies between the Sumbing and iconic Merapi volcanoes and it is

recommended to reach the top at sunrise for a breath-taking visual.

Yogyakarta is also the home of the Keraton, the regions royal palace.

Built by a Portuguese architect in the mid 18th century as a recreation

and secure defensive centre with swimming pools and resting rooms

for the Sultanate of Yogyakarta it has become known as the Taman

when under threat by enemies. Nowadays tourists and locals alike

Angkor Wat is of course the temple we all know about. It was built

for Khmer King Suriyavarman II in the 12th century as his state

temple and capital city, and eventually mausoleum. Angkor Wat is

the country’s prime attraction for visitors and has become one of the

Originally called Rajavihara, Ta Prohm was founded in 1186 AD by King

and has been left in much the same condition in which it was found.

Many trees are growing out the ruins in its jungle surrounds and

this creates a somewhat magical setting, a sort of “Jungle Jimish”

Bangkok, ThailandDespite the plough of rush-hour traffic, eager development

construction and the hustle and bustle of its busy population,

Bangkok is known to its residents as ‘Krung Thep’ or the ‘City of Angles’

and has a amazing rich history, an impressive record for honouring its

cultural traditions and a serious approach to the conservation of its

historical and religious sites. Thailand is the only country in SE Asia

that has never been colonized by a foreign power and as such its

history is its own.

The Historical records of Bangkok start in the early fifteenth century

when because of its strategic location near the Lower Chao Phraya

River the site was developed as a trading post serving the greater

region. Without any significant interest from Europe the port

slowly grew in size. It was in 1782 when King Rama I of the Chakri

dynasty named the city of Bangkok. Today after two centuries of

rapid development Bangkok has morphed into a cosmopolitan

powerhouse.

There are approximately 400 temples in and around Bangkok today.

Spectacular as a monument to traditional art and architecture is the

Grand Palace in the city’s central Rattakosin district. The Grand Palace

was built at the time of the city’s foundation and for 150 years served

as the residence of the King of Siam (The former name for Thailand)

and his royal family as well as the administrative seat of government.

Hundreds of coral reefs and fish species inhabit the sea around Nusa

Penida and recommended dive sites include Crystal Bay, Toyapakeh

and Sanur Bay named from the island side as Malibu Point. For

snorkeling enthusiasts both Toyapakeh and Crystal Bay are free of

strong currents.

Nusa Penida, along with Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan are

collectively designated as a bird sanctuary. Back in 2006 a group

of 35 local villages under the wing of Friends of the National Park

There are several ancient historical sights around the island and

traditional Balinese Temples indicate the spiritual folk law of Nusa

Visitors tend to stay in the Sengigi area, the long

see around the island. One of them is Tanjung A’an near Lombok Kuta Beach (not to be confused

with the one in Bali), a shore famous for its unique pepper-like sand. There is also the magnificent

Tangsi Beach a.k.a ‘Pink beach’, so named for the striking pink sand of its entire shoreline.

The island is also the home of some intoxicatingly beautiful waterfalls; the most well known are Air

Terjun Sindang Gila, Air Terjun Tiu Kelep and Air Terjun Betara Lendang. Visitors should also check

a twice-weekly ferry service to Banda Nerira Port. Local

airlines or charter planes also offer services to Banda.

Banda is the fabled gem of the Indonesian archipelago.

Once called the ‘Spice Islands’ by foreign armadas

of traders that included Chinese, Indian, Arabian,

Portuguese, Dutch, and British, the islands are blessed

with fertile soil ideally suited to the growth of mace and

nutmeg. It was these spices that from the 14th century

lured the Portuguese, Dutch and British (In that order) to

a hysterical and sometimes bloody spice rush. So highly

profitable was the trade in these then exotic spices that

greed was to drive conflict between the Dutch and British

traders and cause real problems for the local Bandanese.

The Banda Islands are made up of

three main and seven smaller islands

and this group is now one of the most

popular tourist destinations in the

Maluku region. The topical beauty of

this cluster, the conical Gunung Api

volcano, the rich history and superb

diving/snorkelling opportunities

in a rich marine environment are

the reasons the islands attract so

many visitors. Colourful coral reefs

abound and divers will come across

sharks, schools of Napoleon wrasse,

dogtooth tuna, enormous turtles,

mobula rays, red tooth triggerfish,

giant groupers and various species

of whales in crystal clear water. The

area is not only suitable for advanced

divers because here beginners and

snorkelers can enjoy the safety of

shallow lagoons scattered between

Banda Neira and Gunung Api. The

major Banda Island dive sites are

Keraka Island, Lontar Island, Batu

Belanda and Ai Island and it is

believed that there are still more to be

discovered.

It is said that the majestic natural beauty in Banda Island can only be

compared with Raja Ampat of Papua.

The two of largest islands are Banda Neira and Banda Besar. For the

adventurous, a climb up to the peak of Gunung Api (Mount Api) is well

worth the exertion. From the top, breathtaking views of the area are

available. In Banda Neira one can visit Fort Belgica, an impressive and

somewhat infamous fort built by the Dutch to protect their trade from

the British. Preserved and refurbished this UNESCO World Heritage

site gives visitors an opportunity to explore and understand some of

the Spice Island’s past history. Of significant historical interest is Fort

Nassau, built by the Dutch in 1609 on Bandaneria Island and which

marked the end of any independent trading rights of the Bandanese.

A visit to Banda is well worth the extra travel involved and the effort

will be repaid tenfold. The sheer magnetic beauty of the place is

enough by itself to draw one to its distant parts.

casual and market venues. It is the hawker centres that have most appeal for

me because it is from these that the real taste of Asia is made available at

local prices and inimitable flavour. One of the popular eating-places is the

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre, one of Penang’s most popular shopping malls.

Here the stalls offer all sorts of local dishes such as kwey teow, asam laksa,

nasi lemak and the best chicken curry I have had anywhere in the world.

This busy and prosperous island state of Malaysia has managed a sensitive

incorporation of modernity with its rich and colourful history.

This once a tranquil fishing village of Hua Hin has become

one of the most sought-after holiday areas on the Gulf of

Thailand. So popular is it that it has developed into the

favoured getaway destination for residents of Thailand’s

larger cities. International brand hotels have built their

properties around the vicinity of Hua Hin. It should be said

however that rapid development is controlled by local

government authorities that have committed to a program

of maintaining the natural beauty and value of the city’s

surrounds.

Hua Hin can be reached easily from the country’s capitol,

Bangkok. A four-hour train service from the capitol

provides a relaxing and sight full travel experience. Bus

and minivan services offer a faster way to Hua Hin and for

those who like to get on the water, boat services also ply

their way to Hua Hin from Bangkok.

The initial development of Hua Hin city can be traced

Nha Trang

The beachfront area of Nha Trang has these last few

years, been through some great improvement with added

parks and sculptured gardens spread along its impressive

shorefront. The local streets now present a host of dining

options that have contributed to turning Nha Trang into a

fully-fledged resort city. It has become one of Vietnam’s

most important tourist hubs and most sought-after

tropical holiday destinations in Southeast Asia.

It was the French who first realized the potential of Nha

Trang, with its beautiful bay and sweeping crescent

beach. The city’s development has continued and it

eventually becomes a favourite spot for American soldiers

during the Vietnam War era.

Most of the hotels and resorts in Nha Trang are built

overlooking the sea, embracing the beauty of the city’s

white-sandy beaches, but those adventurers at heart will

still have a chance to explore some untouched shorelines

and amazing views. Inland waterfalls have become very

popular amongst tourists and Ba Ho waterfalls have a

series of three falls well-worth visiting. On the north side

The most popular historical site to be found in Nha Trang’s vicinity

is the Po Nagar, a Cham temple tower at Cu Lao Mountain in the

centre of the city. It is dedicated to the goddess of the country, Yan

Just like any self-respecting resort should be, Nha Trang is city

Nha Trang has enjoyed continued city development without letting

Historically, Solo plays an important role as the centre of power in Central

Java’s past at a time when the Mataram Sultanate reigned and spread its

influence all across Java. When the Sultanate split, it left two ‘court’ cities as its

heirs; Solo and Jogjakarta.

Solo is a less targeted tourist destinations compared to Jogjakarta, but it

has more than enough points of interest for those with an edifying bent for

history. Here traditional markets, royal ‘Keraton’ and traditional villages

(or ‘kampung’) stand with modern shopping malls. Solo still preserves the

best of its authentic Javanese characteristic. One should plan to stay for a

few days in order to explore the traditional ambience, the vibrant street life

and the ancient buildings of the city.

One of the oldest historical sites in Solo is Keraton Kasunanan. This is

a large palace built back in 1755 and combining the finest of traditional

Javanese and European elements. This palace was built as a result of

Giyanti agreement between The Dutch East Indian Company (VOC) and

the disputing parties of the Mataram Sultanate, Sunan Pakubuwana III and

Prince Mangkubumi. This dispute divided the Mataram Sultanate into two

cities: Surakarta and Jogjakarta. Another interesting historical landmark

in Solo is the Puro Mangkunegaran. Raden Mas Said established this palace

back in 1757 after the divide of the Mataram Sultanate, as a part of his

treaty with the VOC. Raden Mas Said later becomes the ruler of Eastern

Mataram region as King Mangkunegaran I. The palace is now a residence

of King Mangkunegaran IX, who has reigned since 1987.

A visitor’s explorative stay here will also be rewarded in a culinary sense.

One should try some of the city’s authentic food such as nasi liwet,

tengkleng, timlo, and refreshing beverages such as tahok and es dawet.

Solo is also home of the Batik processing industry. Batik is the traditional

Indonesian art of cloth decoration using liquid wax to control the spread of

colour through a design. Nowadays the art of Batik has produced popular

pattern arrangements for garments and is widely considered as the identity

of Indonesia.

With its, ancient sites, bustling markets, enamouring food, art and

traditional life, Solo should be on the agenda for anyone visiting

Central Java.

For most foreign travelers, Surabaya is regarded as a transit

stop, although for the locals it is one of the most important cites

in Indonesia and often linked with the birth of the nation itself.

For those with the will and patience to explore, it is a city of

charming old heritage wonders and a vibrancy that will lead one

through some interesting experiences.

The city government has committed itself to prevent rapid

modern development extinguishing the priceless historical

nature of its earlier days. Some of the most valuable heritage

sites date back from Dutch Colonial era and while some now

accommodate commercial interests such as hotels, bars and

restaurants, great care has been taken to maintain the structures

in their original form.

The Hotel Majapahit, built on 1910 as the ‘Oranje Hotel’ is an

exquisite example of bipartisan preservation. Here one can

enjoy the immaculate posh of a bygone age and experience the

treatment of a respected Raja. Beautiful gardens bright with

sinuous rills and incense-bearing trees enfold sunny spots of

greenery. (I’ve pinched a pastiche of some of Coleridge there

but such was the pleasure of my first visit) Another wonderful

delight of this hotel is the afternoon tea in the main lounge as

ducks waddle through to the fishpond out in the garden. The

is another heritage landmark in

Surabaya in which the city has managed

to maintain the essential ambience of

its past.

For those with a fascination for nature

will expose the awesome power of the

Earth’s moving tectonic plates. Not far

from the city is the village of Ngadisan

Indonesia’s capital began its long journey through life as a

trading post established by the Kingdom of Sunda back in

the 4th century. In 1596 the first Dutch traders were given

permission by the Sultanate of Batan to establish a trading

post on the site. Some 6 years later the British East India

Company arrived and entered into direct competition with

the Dutch. This eventually led to the Dutch defeating the

armies of the Sultnate and throwing the English out.

In 1619 the Dutch VOC named the site Batavia and became

the colonial power in Indonesia for over 300 years.

Nowadays the emblematic colonial site in Jakarta is Kota Tua

and is a popular tourist destination for visitors to the city.

Here at Fatahillah Square in Kota Tua visitors can view the

original town square of Batavia with its heritage buildings

housing the Wayang Museum, The Jakarta Historical Musium

heritage buildings have been taken

preserving the original aesthetics and

restaurants and bars. An interesting

remnant of the colonial era is Jembatan

Intan - or The Bridge of Diamond City.

This wooden bridge was built around

1710 over the Ciliwung River connecting

the Dutch and original British fort. The

bridge utilizes a bulky counter leaver

system on the tops of its two columns

for the span support and has become a

popular photography site.

While visiting the capital one should

visit Monas-Jakarta’s National

Monument and Indonesia’s treasured

structure. This symbolic 132-meter

monument with its golden tip was

erected in the middle of Merdeka

Square and was built as a tribute to

soldiers who lost their lives in the

Indonesian battle for independence

against Dutch.

Visitors should not forget that Jakarta

is the capitol of the country’s shopping

Shopping outlets of note are Plaza

Perhaps two of the most appealing draws for the city’s visitors

are the bonanza of shopping opportunities and the now world

famous culinary delights on offer.

The iconic Orchard Road is of course where many head for

distinctive retail outlets, shopping malls, restaurants and

hotels. This is where stores range from those presenting

premium brands to those offering more affordable

merchandise. This is also where exclusive fine dining

restaurants share the road with fast food outlets, cafes and

Pan Asian food courts. Such is Singapore’s ethnic diversity

that restaurants and eating-places represent almost everyone

of the world’s cultural culinary entremets.

Marina Bay Sands with its much-photographed trio of 200

metre towers has become a huge draw for visitors. The towers

jointly support the 340-metre Sky Park where a 150-metre

infinity swimming pool provides entertainment and city

skyline visuals from its lofty heights. Beside offering world

class hotel accommodation, Marina Bay Sands has its own

shopping centre lined with high-end boutiques, ‘celebrity

chef ’ restaurants, an ice skating rink, two floating Crystal

pavilions, as well as the world’s largest atrium casino with

500 tables and 1,600 slot machines.

The Universal Studios Singapore is another major attraction

that has lured many visitors into Singapore. Situated within

the Resorts World Sentosa on Sentosa Island, this theme park

is packed with fun rides and exciting shows for everyone.

Page 73: Tropicallife jan apr2015 web

It is worth putting aside a full day for Universal Studios to take advantage of the

entertainment provided for the whole family.

For evening and nightfall feasting, Clarke Quay, the historical riverside quay in

Singapore, is a buzz of restaurants and entertainment venues. Cafes, restaurants

and clubs occupy this strip on the river and together offer an incalculable range of

dishes from all over the world. It is here that Brewerkz offers American food and

boutique Singapore beer. One should not miss Quayside Seafood, Clarke Quay’s

award winning seafood restaurant where Singapore’s famous chilli crab is served.

Visiting Singapore, one can be sure of excitement and new things to do and see.

With its Mediterranean climate of fine sunny weather for

most of the year an outdoor lifestyle predominates. The

relaxing cool of autumn, a mild winter and the green lush of

spring follows “Beach Weather” in summer. With so much to

see and do in Perth, we provide you with some of the major

attractions of this modern and invigorating city.

As an admirer of historical buildings myself, I would invite

visitors to take in sometime for these sites. My first choice

is the impressive St. Mary’s Cathedral. Situated at the centre

of Victoria Square, this Gothic style cathedral was designed

by architect and mason Brother Joseph Ascione and built

by Benedictine monks in 1863. Closed for some time for

restoration St. Mary’s was reopened in 2009. Other sites of

note are the Round House, the Old Mill, the Perth Mint and

the Barrack’s Arch that symbolises an important period of

Perth’s History.

Visitors should not miss the opportunity to take in Kings

Park. So much more than a municipal garden, the park is just

1.5 kilometres from the city centre, covers an extensive area of

natural vegetation and is home to Perth’s Botanical gardens.

From the park’s outer lookout point, one can view the much-

photographed city’s modern central towers over the expansive

wind of the Swan River and across

hinterland to the backdrop of the

Darling Ranges.

If shopping is one of the reasons

to visit Perth, one can do no better

than take in the old European

facades of King Street’s buildings

and from there access both the

intersecting Murray and Hay

streets. Here open pedestrian malls,

fashionable shops, department

stores and high-end boutiques

offering Louis Vuitton, Prada and

Gucci and many others abound.

For a change of scenery, visit the

port city of Fremantle. It’s about

a 30-minute drive from Perth and

here careful attention has been

paid to the preservation of the city’s

colonial heritage. Freemantle is on

the mouth of the Swan River and

as the original port for Perth, has a

distinctly cosmopolitan air and look

about it. Renowned for its markets,

ethnically diverse restaurants,

the European influence through

Cappuccino Strip and rich history, a

good day trip is recommended here.

For accommodation in Perth I would

suggest The Best Western Premier

Terrace Hotel situated on the corner

of St George’s Terrace and Mount

Street in the ‘West End’ of Perth’s

CBD. Originally built in 1892,

this newly restored Terrace Hotel

offers 15 custom designed suites

with each reflecting the historical

sophistication and luxury of its time.

My recent trip to Perth was both

rewarding and exhilarating and I

am certainly planning to return

again soon. It’s easily accessible

I visited Malacca a couple of months ago and was

overwhelmed by the rich history, culture and landmark

architecture. The city is a historical treasure trove and was

listed in July 2008 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

From its foundation Malacca rapidly developed to become the

most important warehousing and staging port as gateway to

the Spice Islands during the profitable days of the spice trade.

The Portuguese traders first arrived on Malaccan soil in 1511

but then in 1641 they surrendered power to the Dutch who

controlled the trade in the area until the British took over

until the establishment of the Malaysian State in 1957. It was

then that Malacca ran as a semi autonomous province.

Thanks to The Majestic Malacca, my fascinating historical

journey started with the informative and truly interesting

complimentary daily tours for their guests. Starting along

the winding banks of the Malacca River towards Heeren

Street. This is one of the earliest streets built by the Dutch

to accommodate The Dutch East India Company’s managing

officials. Later, wealthy Chinese traders inhabited the street.

The residential buildings of Heeren Street display the

opulence and ornate facades of its mixed history.

From Heeren to Jalan Toko Emas, home

of the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple Built

in1673, this temple is one of the oldest

and most revered Chinese temples

in Malaysia. Jalan Toko Emas is also

known Harmony Street and is located

close to the Kampung Kling Mosque.

This historic mosque is a Sri Poyatha

Moorthi Temple, the oldest in Malaysia.

The highlight for me was of course a

visit to the Stadthuys. Built in 1650

as the official residence of Dutch

Governors, this building is a fine

example of the Dutch architecture of the

time. Good preservation practises have

maintained the building’s original form

and its distinctive bright red exterior.

The Victorian Fountain and Christ

Church are located in the same area as

the Stadthuys. This is perhaps the most

photographed area here in Malacca.

Restaurants and craft shops line Jonker

Street where souvenirs and distinctive

Malaccan cuisine can be enjoyed.

Feeling a little like something from the

current century? It is in Jonker Street

that Hard Rock Café Malacca is situated.

My visit to Malacca was revealing,

interesting and fun.

Perhaps, one of the most popular and photographed

historical sites is the Sultan Abdul Samad Building

situated in front of the Merdeka (Independent)

Square Kuala Lumpur and the Royal Selangor Club.

The name was derived from Sultan Abdul Samad

who was the Sultan of Selangor at the time when

construction began. The building was completed

in 1894 by A.C. Norman to accommodate several

important government departments during the

British administration and now is used for Malaysian

Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture.

The building was made entirely by bricks, featuring

Moorish-style influences, a combination of local

culture and British styles, and has a shinny copper

dome as well as 40-meter high clock tower. It also

functions as a backdrop for many important events

such as the National Day Parade on August 31 and the

bringing-in of a New Year.

Within walking distance, one can visit Chinatown (Petaling

Street). Here with many of its original buildings, attractions

abound through the Malaysia Heritage Walk, also known as

Katsuri Walk by the locals. This covered walkway is home to an

open-air flea market where vendors sell local snacks, delicacies

and more. The Central Market situated alongside Katsuri Walk

is a popular site for visitors and is lined with shops providing

a wide variety of products including jewellery, souvenirs,

Page 79: Tropicallife jan apr2015 web

Malaysian Batik, embroidery carvings, sculptures as well as eateries

serving delicious local dishes.

Another interesting place of interest in Chinatown is the gorgeous

ornamented Sri Mahamariamman Temple, a large structure

integrating Spanish and Italian tiles, precious stones and gold

through its internal structure. It’s worth seeing this oldest Hindu

temple in the city as it offers a wonderful insight towards the history

of this religion and its connection with other cultures.

While in Kuala Lumpur I was enthralled by the sight of the Railway

Administration Building, now the Headquarters of KTM Berhad

(KTMB). Completed in 1917, the building has a captivating age-

browned façade dominated by Moorish style arches and domes. This

lovely old building is steeped with attention to the detail of its time.

My recent trip to Kuala Lumpur was memorable. It’s hard not

to enjoy this modern and sophisticated city with its uniquely

exceptional heritage architecture and where the contrast between

glass and concrete is so pleasing to the eye.

the place for those seeking a reprieve from life’s scurrying

lush forests, waterfalls, exotic wildlife and remote hill tribes.

Here one can visit the historical Golden Triangle intersection,

a meeting point between Laos, Myanmar and Thailand and the

former centre of the world’s largest opium trade.

To reach the city, flights can be had from most airports in

Thailand to Chiang Rai International Airport located 8 km from

the centre of the city. Alternatively, driving from Bangkok on the

Bangkok Highway or from Chang Mai on Highway 118 will take

The abundance of rural landscape is delightful here and villages

this area.

Throughout the city, attractions range from ruins of ancient

settlements to magnificent Buddha temples including Wat

built by Thailand’s famous architect Chalermchai Kositpipat

back in 1998. The temple is a bizarre mix of surreal science-

fiction art and Thailand traditional architecture where pure

white dominates the colour theme. Other noteworthy places

to visit include the commanding sweep of the Mae Kok River

and the popular hiking grounds of the Phucheefah Mountain.

Chiang Rai is also the home of a number of museums and art

galleries where much of the area’s artistic repute is on display.

One should not miss the opportunity here to take in the local

restaurants and the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar where tasty

traditional dishes for you and some rather extraordinary items

Combining great cuisine and interactive renditions, Banyubiru at The Laguna Luxury Resort & Spa offers an exquisite cultural dining program, involving a Balinese Blessing, fire dance performance and dinner ceremony that take the guests into an intimate journey through Balinese and religious performances.

This fascinating dinner program begins with a gathering of guests at the Cascade bar close to the lobby to view a fire dance enacted by three dancers and two musicians. At the conclusion of this dramatic dance I was escorted with the rest of the guests to an open area just in front of a Pura (temple) in the Temple Garden. Here for the blessing I took part and experienced first-hand the basic ‘five steps’ of the Balinese Hindu prayer procession. A walk through the garden followed this

to the Banyubiru Restaurant to enjoy a magnificent pan-Asian buffet meal in the opulence of a fine dining space.

Here the wide range of Asian choices that included Balinese seafood satays, gado-gado, urap, lawar and Bali’s famous suckling pig allowed me to mix my dishes; one of my favourite habits. The suckling pig with its crunchy skin and tender meat was irresistible. The buffet also presented an array of sweets, from macaroons to traditional Indonesian treats such as pisang goreng (Indonesian banana fritters).

The Balinese blessing and ceremony dinner at Banyubiru was just as entertaining as culturally interesting and the dinner itself - Well that was just superb!

A recent renovation has given Café Degan more seating capacity and extra comfort for their guests. This popular café is known for its Indonesian and Thai dishes and is now able to present these in the style they deserve. Two VIP rooms have also been added and each has a capacity for 10 diners or can be combined to accommodate a larger group. An outdoor terrace provides a refreshing eating venue on fine nights and the new items have been added to their already extensive menu.

Being a seafood eater by nature I went for Degan’s Mangut ikan lele – catfish fried with coconut oil and then reheated in a soup bowl of coconut milk, green tomato and ‘petai’ an Indonesian bean. Smooth and moreish this dish is best taken with steamed rice. I followed this with bebek tumis cabe – wok-tossed fried duck under red chilli, tomato and fried shallots. This is one of those dishes that can be taken as mild delicacy or a more exciting walk through the fire of hot chilli. Back to seafood after this and I chose the pla muek thod grathiam – a Thai version of fried calamari and tofu. My main meals saw me through a range of Asian flavours and the subtle threads of herbs and spices.

To complement my pleasant feast, a portion of rhubarb and hibiscus compote with creamed yoghurt was a satisfying end to a grand meal. Don’t forget this one when you visit Café Degan.

Casually tucked in Sayan area overlooking the majestic Ayung River just outside the crowded part of Ubud, The Sayan House is an extraordinary fine dining restaurant designed for comfort and expressing a home like atmosphere with an emphasis on “welcome” for all its guests.

the Sayan houSe

The place is totally hidden from the main road, but as one drives into the circular sand area of the property it becomes obvious that one has arrived at somewhere special. Deceptive from the front but a full mind blowing vista awaits those who venture to the rear of this establishment. The green and scalloped landscape of Ubud fame spreads magnificent from the dining area. It doesn’t take much of a geographer to realize that the view to the West is going to produce some magical sunsets over paddies and palms.

So much for the view, let’s get on to the really good stuff. This is where The Sayan shows its true colours.

The menu here in influenced by various spices from around the world that are put together in an exquisite rainbow of taste.

No idle potluck in this kitchen! Do try the porcini royal soup consommé and then tell your friends. Thai style green curry fettuccine is a delicious cross-cultural marriage of Al Dente and Noy Quin. Perhaps the innovative sautéed foie grass nigiri will add another taste experience to the already tumbling magic of our planet’s seductive spices. On the other hand an Australian wagyu steak served with freshly grated wasabi may convince one that

good taste comes from good ideas. And just to come back to earth how about oma’s apple pie served with homemade gelato.

Go on! Treat yourself! The Sayan Houseis is an experience not to be missed.

The restaurant is relatively small and presents as a luxury home. Timber furnishings dominate the interior and while there is an Indonesian authenticity with the menu, dishes are presented in an appealing modern mode.

I made myself comfortable at one of the tables and started my culinary journey with tuna sambal matah - pan seared tuna with sesame seed served with Balinese chili sauce ‘matah’. I followed this with the restaurants rendang, a rich beef stew based with coconut milk and the delicate sway of tamarind. I just couldn’t get enough of this delicious rending as authentic and savory spices soak up thorough the tender meat of beef.

Eager to sample as much as I could, I ordered a second main course, Magnut Ikan - snapper simmered in coconut milk and topped off with a special chili sauce. This was Indonesian fare at its best.

I took a plunge with Tapis at Kayumanis’ new cocktail that they have named Melodi Kemangi. Here vodka, mango, strawberry and ‘kemangi’ leaves are brought together to produce a very refreshing drink indeed. To end on a sweet tooth I had a plate of Klepon Nilasari - a sweet cake made from purple yam, brown sugar and grated coconut. This sweet goes really well with a scoop of red bean ice cream.

Just in case you haven’t heard, there is a delicious treat waiting to be discovered in Ubud called Room4Dessert. This is the creation of the palate seducer Will Goldfarb of previous Room4Dessert fame in New York City. Famed for creating avant-garde desserts and known as ‘The Prince of Pastry”, Will is the unchallenged master of turning simple ingredients into seductive plates of delicious desserts. Local products and Indonesian preparation techniques have given Will a whole new string to his sweet bow. Indonesia has an enticing range of products like belingo, kemangi, palm sugar, tombong, snakefruit and klepon that have added zest to his already well-honed art.

Room4Dessert serves 9 different desserts, each with its own character, presentation and taste. Here are 5 of my favourites. Chocobubbles,

reminiscent of teenage years, adds warm chocolate with caramelized honey and lime to mum’s cookies. Todo sobre mi coco is a delicious coconut based dessert made from coconut – milk, cake and candy with the addition of tombong. Baba O’Rhiley utilizes brioche that has been soaked in rum and served with snakefruit ice and cashew nutella. For something a little savoury, Cheezus West is a fancy grilled cheese on un-kneaded cibatta with kemangi pesto and rosella. Petit fours are artistically presented cocoa covered nibs of praline, klepon, buttermilk biscuit and strawberry jelly.

An exciting and mouth watering way to enjoy Will’s desserts is to sit at the bar as the man himself prepares your order. Room4Dessert also offers a range of cocktails to pair with an indulgent feast. Don’t miss this one! It’s art to eat.

A trip to Ubud is not complete without a visit to the Blanco Renaissance Museum. There are two very good reasons for this excursion. Firstly, the museum presents a fascinating collection of art works of the legendary Don Antonio Blanco and the attached Restaurant Rondji is the worthy second reason for a visit. This delightful restaurant is a visual as well as a gourmet experience.

Inpired by and named after the wife of the late Don Antonio Blanco, Rondji is immediately captivating with its expansive timber decked floor up there in the tree tops and tangle with nature. The interior dining area is housed under an exposed timber roofing structure of traditional style and sits well with its surrounds of tropical Bali.

Rondji delivers its promise of good food and drink with exceptional style and grace. The menu offers a mix of

European and a modern format of Balinese dishes. My first choice here was the slow cooked (24 hours) short ribs. Soaked in a sweet tangy sauce these plump offerings simply melted in my mouth. The short ribs were followed by Rondji’s nasi ayam or chicken rice. This is a dish that combines the cooking influence of The Philippines, Indonesia and China. Pulalu style rice with green peas and fried shallots is served with crispy betutu chicken and an explosive pelalasan or chilli sauce.

For something rather different the Rondji smoked roll is well worth a try. This vegetarian sushi roll is prepared, coated with seaweed and served in the restaurants own unique style.

Here at Rondji the delightful ambience was well matched by the excellent food and careful service.

French for ‘plate’, L’Assiette has devoted themselves to serving high quality French Cuisine with appealing twists.

The restaurant’s interior resembles an open-air art space where paintings, wood sculptures and antique objects are either hanging on walls or making interesting corner pieces. The dining area is a friendly clutter of objects and colour – welcome to provincial France. There is a gallery adjacent to the restaurant and here the displayed works of art are for sale.

L’Assiette’s reputation rests on its fine French cuisine along with one or two interesting Asian dishes.

The menu is decidedly French however and projects the same homely approach as the décor of this casual dining restaurant. Starters include black truffle in pastry, tuna salad, duck salad and an orange almond salad that is served with prawns. Main courses take one through the range of traditional French fare incorporating beef, pork, lamb, poultry and fish prepared with classic French style. The restaurant’s tenderloin in pastry with mushroom sauce is not to be missed.

Set menus for lunch is changed on a daily basis and add a certain charm to this friendly family business.

Sweets of course are an important French indulgence and a rather delightful “Fruit L’Assiette”, a combination of fresh fruit, homemade ice cream and sticky drink is a wonderful round off to a meal here. For the more devilish, hot chocolate fondue with ice cream or cream brulee will add another indulgent layer to a delightful meal.

kiLoDesigned with modern Balinese architecture, wood furniture and big windows overlooking a well-manicured landscape, Kilo serves refined comfort and adventure food for those looking for good taste in a casual space. Serving for lunch and dinner, the dishes in KILO are influenced by several cuisines such as Japanese, Italian and Spanish.

One dish I found incredibly tantalizing was the squid ink rice. To be honest, this is not an appetizing looking dish. The black colour resulting from the squid ink can be a bit overwhelming for first timers. However, it is the taste that tantalizes and one immediately forgives oneself for any initial doubts. I guarantee you won’t stop eating until the plate is empty.

The rice is infused with squid ink and mixed with little pieces of squid. Eaten together the rice, crispy baby squid, salmon roe and garlic aioli produces an explosion of flavour where each ingredient complements the other.

Other innovative and delightful meal on the dinner menu is the cream of ebiko pasta, a generous portion of angel hair pasta topped off with tiger prawns, smelt of roe, spring onion and a light sauce.

Although the dessert selection is pretty limited with only 3 choices, I suggest you go straight for the pistachio cake, creme fraiche. This is a deliciously moist and light cake. Kilo is highly recommended for a comfortable gourmet adventure.

After the success of their restaurants in Singapore, Kilo recently opened up their first overseas branch, in the heart of Seminyak.

Jiwa Spa is a luxurious sanctuary where dedicated staff attend to the mind, body and spirit of their guests with a wide selection of treatments and 5-star service accruements that include a welcoming foot massage, a personal Jiwa Spa robe with slippers and complementary use of the steam, sauna, pool and Jacuzzi facilities.

One of the more traditional Balinese treatments is the traditional Balinese lulur where you would be treated like Balinese royalty using a special scrub made of turmeric, sandalwood and rice powder. This mixture is beneficial to the skin.

For my treatment I decided to go for something a little different and chose the Polynesian Mahana, one of the spa’s signature rituals. The Mahana is

basically the island lomi lomi massage where warm oil from Thalgo is applied to the back and feet, the focal points of this massage. After the oil rub, warm sand pouches are placed on the back where they effectively relieve muscle tension. Finally sacred Thalgo oil is applied to the whole body. This wonderful oil soothes and moistens the skin and produces a healthy body glow.

My treatment took place in one of five garden spa pavilions surrounded by the delightful gurgle of water gardens. The spacious pavilions are completed with their own indoor bathrooms, outdoor bathtubs and terraces overlooking the big pond. The mesmerizing environment here is a treatment in itself.

Nestled in a luxurious resort in front of the famed Seminyak Beach, the Oberoi Spa is cleverly designed to blend with Bali’s natural beauty so that a peace of mind is delivered while enjoying one of the many treatments offered.

The spa has two couple open-air pavilions surrounded by natural ponds of lotus and splashing koi. There is no air-conditioning in the treatment room, however the natural breeze flowed freely enough to keep me fresh and cool during the treatment.

One of the signature holistic massages is the Oberoi Massage, a 90-minute treatment that begins with a foot bath ritual. Before it started, I was given the choice of three types of sympathetic spa music: Balinese gong relaxation, Javanese tranquility, or journey overseas.

I was pampered with a 60-minute massage using Uplift oil made from essential oil of lemon grass, eucalyptus and geranium. This has the benefit to strengthening and refreshing the spirit. The technique used by the skilled and very attentive therapist is a medium pressure massage, which combines soothing and rhythmic strokes to increase and rejuvenate circulation.

Next, with the application of turmeric body scrub, a traditional Javanese recipe, a 30-minute body scrub was performed. This effectively gets rid of dead cells and softens the skin. Lastly, a generous amount of fresh yogurt is smeared all over the body to nourish and cleanse the skin leaving the body silky smooth. I found this very relaxing and refreshing treatment.

There is no question that the spa business in Bali is prodigious and varied. The pampering and healthy effects of this industry here are recognised throughout the world. YHI Spa at Melia Bali provides an excellent selection of treatments and pampering rituals to invigorate the senses and relax a weary body.

YHI Spa is the only spa in Nusa Dua facing directly on to the beach featuring 10 indoor treatment rooms, 2 double spa suites, 2 outside massage bales, 1 massage bale at the beach front and 1 massage bale at the pool side, eco spa, steam bath and an attractively set outdoor hydro-massage with warm and cold water. All the services on offer here are innovative new treatments designed for the purification of the body, the balance of the mind and cultivation of the soul.

One of the most popular treatments here is the YHI Beautiful Skin. This is a two-hour session aimed to rejuvenate, relax and beautify. The treatment begins with dry body brushing using lemongrass powder in order to open up the skin pores. Next is an application of YHI’s special plant extract body mask. This cocooning allows the skin to absorb the benefits within the plant extract. A body wash follows before a sensational Balinese massage is performed. It is with this massage using soft but firm pressure that both skin and muscle become relaxed and vitalised.

DaLa Spa at villa de daun

The name DaLa comes from ancient Sanskrit and means leaf. The leaf symbolises Gaia’s or if you like nature’s bountiful gifts to all that live with it; providing shelter, food and vitality to its charges. Here at DaLa Spa treatments are drawn from traditional Asian healing and beauty practices.

Despite the bustle of its surrounds, DaLa Spa welcomes its guests into a veritable haven of serene peace with the artful décor and lighting through the lobby and its 7 florally named treatment rooms.

The spa menu is especially directed towards beauty and relaxation treatments and I was drawn to The Palace Ritual, a 2.5 – hour treatment inspired by gracious traditions of the Sriwijaya Kingdom of South Sumatra. My treatment room was designed in Moroccan classic style of maroon colours overlaying soft fixtures with a bathtub centrepiece beneath a chandelier.

The treatment began with the spa’s tepak manggis foot ritual. With this the feet are cleansed with lime, daun sirih, essential oils and salt. The foot wash was followed by the classic urut nusantara massage where thumb and palm pressure techniques release tension and relax muscles. After this an asam payo body scrub with rosella, coconut milk, and grated candlenut. This scrub eliminates dead skin while moisturising and softening the body and was followed by a tomato and basil body polish. The applied mask was a mixture of tomato, basil, and corn-starch. The final process was a supremely relaxing lemongrass and tuberose bath. The whole experience left my skin radiant and refreshed.

Born in Bandung on March 25th 1968, Doddy Obenk got fascinated by photography as a junior high school

student. After a self taught 20 year journey, Doddy further refined his talent by learning professionally

from several big names in commercial photography including luminaries like Sarah Silver (New York),

Eric Victor (Australia), Geraldo Pace (Canada) and Urs Rechter.

It was in 2006 that Doddy began to showcase his artworks by holding an exhibition themed ‘Life in

Motion’. This marked the beginning of his long and successful career in the world of photography. He has

held numerous exhibitions in that four-year span; one of them prestigiously set in Tokyo, Japan.

His passion and love with Balinese art grows larger each year, and in 2012, he and his friend, fellow

photographer Tjandra Kusuma saw an opportunity to preserve the island’s sacred art and culture through

a documentation project specifically capturing the art forms of Tejakula and Blangsinga villages. The

results of this project in form of photography and video are exhibited each year along with performances

from Balinese maestro dance performers. His interest is such that he established the Intan Budaya Negeri

Foundation in 2008 with the purpose of preserving Balinese culture and tradition.

Today Doddy still continues his focus on preserving the ancient art and tradition of Bali, he is determined

to immortalize it through his lenses, talent and creativity. You can view his artwork at
