GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE MP TROLL 9000
Your new Multi-Parameter TROLL 9000 water quality probe uses the
latest sensor and electronics technology to provide a robust, durable,
and user-friendly instrument.
Designed for both short- and long-term monitoring, the MP
TROLL 9000 logs data from up to 7 optional pressure and water-
quality sensors, as well as built-in temperature and barometric
pressure sensors. Many custom options and versions are
available, so your instrument may not look exactly like those we
have chosen to illustrate in this manual.
The MP TROLL 9000 provides the convenience of a laboratory-
quality measurement instrument for field use, providing true in-
situ monitoring of water level and water quality.

CONVENTIONS
Throughout this operators manual you will see the following symbols.
UNPACKING AND INSPECTION
Your MP TROLL 9000 was carefully inspected before shipping. Check
the instrument for any physical damage sustained during shipment.
Notify In-Situ and file a claim with the carrier if there is any such
damage; do not attempt to operate the instrument.
The instrument will arrive with batteries installed, basic sensors
installed and kept moist in the Calibration Cup. Sensor port plugs are
included for all sensor ports.
Accessories may be shipped separately and should also be inspected
for physical damage and the fulfillment of your order.
SERIAL NUMBER
The serial number is engraved on the body of the Multi-Parameter
TROLL 9000. It is also programmed into the instrument and displayed
when the instrument is connected to a PC running Win-Situ or Pocket-
Situ. We recommend that owners keep a separate record of thisnumber. Should your Multi-Parameter TROLL 9000 be lost or stolen,
the serial number is often necessary for tracing and recovery, as well
as any insurance claims. If necessary, In-Situ maintains complete
records of original owners names and serial numbers.
Serial numbers of the water-quality sensors are stored in sensor
memory and displayed in the software when sensors are installed.

If you suspect that your Multi-Parameter TROLL 9000 is malfunction-ing and repair is required, you can help assure efficient servicing by
following these guidelines:
1. Call In-Situ Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-446-7488. Have
the product model and serial number handy.
2. Be prepared to describe in detail the exact nature (symptoms) of
the problem, including how the instrument was being used and the
conditions noted at the time of the malfunction.
3. If service personnel determine that service is required, they will
assign an RMA (return material authorization) number.
4. Write a description of the problem for service personnel, indicating
whether the malfunction occurs intermittently or constantly. Save
printouts or other materials that illustrate the problem.
5. Clean the Multi-Parameter TROLL 9000 and cable. Decontaminate
thoroughly if it has been used in a toxic or hazardous environment.
See the cleaning guidelines and form at the end of this section.
6. Pack your Multi-Parameter TROLL 9000 in its original shipping box
if possible. Include your write-up of the symptoms, a statement
certifying that the instrument and cable have been decontaminated
and any supporting information.

CLEANING GUIDELINES
Please help us protect the health and safety of our employees by
cleaning and decontaminating equipment that has been subjected to
any potential biological or health hazards, and labeling such equip-
ment. Unfortunately, we cannot service your equipment without such
notification. Please complete and sign the form below (or a similar
statement certifying that the equipment has been cleaned and
decontaminated) and send it along to us with each downhole
instrument.
A good cleaning solution, such as Alconox (a glassware cleaning
product available from laboratory supply houses) is recommended.
Clean all cabling. (Dont forget connectors and protective caps.)
Remove all foreign matter.
Clean the probe bodyincluding the nosecone, restrictor, cable
head, and protective caps. Remove all foreign matter.
Remove and clean all removable sensors. Rinse with deionized or
distilled water after cleaning.
INSTRUMENT RETURN PROCEDURE
1. Contact In-Situ Inc. Customer Service at 1-800-446-7488 and
obtain an RMA (Return Materials Authorization) number from
service personnel.
If an instrument is returned to our Service Center
for repair or recalibration without a statement that ithas been cleaned and decontaminated, or in the

POWER OPTIONS
The MP TROLL 9000 operates in 3 power modes:
internal power external battery pack
external AC line power
These may be used separately or together in any combination.
INTERNAL POWER
MP TROLL 9000:
two standard 1.5V alkaline D cells, OR
two 3.6V lithium D cellsrecommended for use with an RDO
optical dissolved oxygen sensor, and with a turbidity wiper
MP TROLL 9000E:
4 standard 1.5V alkaline D cells
External power is recommended for long-term monitoring and for
networks.
EXTERNAL POWER
A single stand-alone MP TROLL 9000 can run exclusively on power
supplied from a 9-12 VDC line power supply connected to a 90-264
VAC input. When line power is enabled, the MP TROLL shuts down
the battery regulator, thus preserving the internal or external batteries.
Both the comm cable and the direct-read cable include external power
jacks.
NETWORK POWER SUPPLIES, 12 VDC
Three regulated DC network power supplies are available:
North American (120 VAC, 0 to 50 C)
Universal (95-250 VAC, 0 to 40 C)

CABLES
Several basic cable types are used in the MP TROLL 9000 system:
Submersible cable: Vented: yellow polyethylene or blue FEP*
Non-vented: black high-density polyethylene (HDPE)
Stainless steel suspension cable: non-vented, no communica-
tion capabilities
Network cable: non-vented non-submersible gray PVC

QUICK-CONNECT SUBMERSIBLE CABLE
Vented submersible cable includes the instrument's backshell and
provides conductors for power and communication signals, a vent
tube, strain relief, and a service grip to anchor the instrument securely.
Vented cable is designed for use with gauged
pressure/level sensors, atmospheric pressure
reference for DO sensors, and to measure
barometric pressure.
Non-vented submersible cable is designed for
use with absolute pressure/level sensors.

The Surface Connector remains above the water
surface and mates with a variety of cables and

Vented Cap
The surface connector cap is vented to allow the
cables vent tube to carry atmospheric pressure to the back of the
pressure sensor diaphragm. A hydrophobic membrane (moisture bar-
rier) of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) under the vent keeps water
droplets out. A canister of indicating desiccant (replaceable) protects
the cable and electronics from condensation of water vapor.
COMMUNICATION CABLES
ComIT2 Communication Interface
A null modem cable that connects the MP TROLL's
quick-connect submersible cable to a desktop or laptop
PC or to a handheld PDA. Includes a port-powered
RS485 to RS232 converter. Weatherproof, withstands
temporary immersion. Cable vents into ComIT body,
protected by a hydrophobic membrane.
Computer Connection Cable ("Comm Cable")
Vented polyurethane cable (1.8 m, 6 ft),
connects the MP TROLL's submersible cable to
a PC or PDA. Converts the instrument's RS485
signal to RS232. Includes a 2.5 mm external
power jack to connect the instrument to 9-12
VDC external power.
Recommended for applications where a
permanent desktop PC connection is required.
Direct-Read Cable
Combines the functions of the quick-connect
submersible cable and comm cable; connects
the MP TROLL 9000 directly to a PC or PDA;
includes RS485/RS232 converter and external
power jack.

VERSIONS AND FEATURE SETS
The features available in different versions of the Multi-Parameter
TROLL 9000 are shown in the table above.
CONTROL SOFTWAREWin-Situ enables communication between the MP TROLL 9000 and a
desktop or laptop PC. Pocket-Situ is Win-Situ for PDA.
Both versions of the software provide instrument control for calibra-
tion, profiling, long-term data logging, direct readings, data extraction,
data viewing (text and graphical interface), choice of units and other
custom display options, battery/memory usage tracking, interface to
networks and telemetry.
WAKEUP
The MP TROLL uses a technique we call sleeping to minimize poweconsumption and extend battery life. When the instrument is asleep
whenever there is no immediate task to performonly its internal
clock remains active. The MP TROLL will wake when its clock
indicates it is time to take a data point, or when you are directly
communicating with it via Win-Situ or Pocket-Situ.

SMART SENSORS
The MP TROLLs smart sensors retain manufacturing and calibration
information for plug-and-play ease and flexibility in the front end option
ports. Sensor insertion and removal tools simplify insertion and
removal.
SYSTEM CONNECTORS
The lightweight, weather-resistant nylon connectors used throughout
the Multi-Parameter TROLL 9000 system are designed for straightfor-
ward connection. Connector keying prevents misconnections. For
example, submersible cable cannot mate with network cable.
Each connector is protected by a dust cap. Replacements for worn or
damaged dust caps are available from In-Situ Inc. or your local
distributor.
TRIPLE MOISTURE PROTECTION
A vented connector cap at the top of the Multi-Parameter TROLL
9000's submersible cable is fitted with a hydrophobic membrane that
will not allow water droplets to pass into the cable. This replaceable
cap contains indicating desiccant to protect the cable and electronics
from condensation of water vapor. Additional desiccant in the Multi-
Parameter TROLL 9000 body provides further protection against
moisture damage, but is not user-replaceable.

Multi-Parameter TROLL 9000
Operators Manual
This section provides a quick overview of the initial steps necessary to
get the Multi-Parameter TROLL 9000 ready to take measurements.
You will need
Power Sensors
Cable
Software (Win-Situ or Pocket-Situ) and a desktop or
laptop PC, or a supported PDA
Calibration Kitone for each sensor to be calibrated, or
the QuickCal Kit for the Basic Sensor set (pH, ORP,
polarographic D.O., Conductivity)
POWER
The Multi-Parameter TROLL 9000 and TROLL 9000E ship with
internal alkaline batteriesstandard off-the-shelf 1.5V alkaline D-cells.
For use with an RDO optical dissolved oxygen sensor, and with aturbidity wiper, the alkaline batteries in the TROLL 9000 (but not the
TROLL 9000E)may be replaced with In-Situ-supplied 3.6V lithium D
cells (shipped separately, customer installation required).
SENSORS
Basic water-quality sensorspH, ORP, polarographic D.O., Conduc-
tivitymay arrive installed in the instruments sensor ports. Proceed to
Cable if there are no additional sensors to be installed.
Install sensors in the Extended Sensor Set and any sensors shipped
separately as follows:
1. Remove the restrictor from the front end of the MP TROLL 9000.
This allows access to the sensor block depicted in the drawing
below. There are four sensor ports, P1 through P4, plus a perma-
nently installed pressure and/or turbidity sensor or plug.
2. Remove the sensors protective cap or storage bottle and set asidefor future storage of the sensor. If the connector end
is covered with a cap, remove it also.
3. Use the sensor removal tool to remove the plug from
the port where you will install the sensor. Retain the
plug for use when deploying the instrument with
fewer than 4 removable sensors installed.
4. Check lubrication of the sensor o-rings.
TIP:When unscrewing the restrictor, it is best to grasp the
body (not the back end) with one hand and the smooth
area of the restrictor with the other.

If the o-rings appear dry, apply a silicone lubricant beforeinstallation.

5. Align the mark on the side of the sensor with the mark on the port.
6. Press the sensor firmly into the port until you feel it
dock with the connector at the bottom. When
properly inserted a small gap (width of the sensor
removal tool) remains between the instrument body
and the widest part of the sensor, for ease of
removal.
CABLE
The cable port at the back end of the MP TROLL 9000 accommodates
different quick-connect cables, depending on the application.
Quick-Connect Submersible Cabledesigned to be capped off
and left in the field during deployment. To connect to a PC,
simply add a communication interface or comm cable.
Quick-Connect Direct-Read Cableconnects directly to a PC
for calibrating, profiling, programming, and downloading.
QUICK-CONNECT CABLE
1. Remove the soft dust cap from the instrument backshell at the end
of the quick-connect cable.
2. Remove the protective plug from the cable port at the back end of
the MP TROLL 9000 body.
3. Attach the backshell end of the quick-connect cable to the cable
port. The threads will
screw smoothly
together. Hand-
tighten.
PC CONNECTION
1. Attach a ComIT2 Communication Interface or comm cable to the
surface connector of the MP TROLL 9000s quick-connectsubmersible cable.
2. Attach the DB9 connector on the ComIT or comm cable to a PCs
standard RS232 serial port (a serial cable or card may be needed
with some PDAs).
If the sensing element is at the end of the sensor, becareful to handle the sensor by the sides. Use the
insertion tool to press the sensor into the port at step 6.

After installing a polarographic D.O. sensor, we recom-mend conditioning it for 2-4 hours, preferably overnight,
before calibrating. For more on D.O. sensor conditioning,see Section 13.
TIP:Retain the dust cap to protect the backshell's contact
board from damage when not attached to the instrument.
