NO DROUGHT … at Trinity! I think all who attended the Big Fat Fall Festival would agree. It was a wonderful day … a full and busy day with many things to do and LOTS to eat! (Oh, my goodness was there a lot to eat….a won-derful noon day meal … popcorn and snow cones in the afternoon and THEN an abundance of pies and ice cream to top it all off that evening. I have decided that pie and ice cream is THE best balanced meal EVER!) Enthusiasm permeated our worship in the morning as one of our seminary students, Lynn Robinson preached. ..with the sanctuary full with members and guests and the singing was exhilarating. It was a great morning. The afternoon with its numerous activities was invigorating. Our entertain-ment, Daniel Christian, was delightful. We were blessed with an abso-lutely amazing day. BUT what does this have to do with drought? (No, it does not have any-thing to do with our need for rain for the crops.) This drought has to do with the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT. It has to do with those qualities God is calling us to have in our lives; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, good-ness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control! These are the attributes that help identify us as followers of Jesus … these are the qualities that help us to grow in our faith and to turn from concern about what I WANT to what is good for others. And it is those qualities that were in abundance … that were plentiful on August 12th.
I believe our BIG FAT FALL FESTIVAL is much BIGGER than the monetary gifts we share with those who are seeking ordination or certification as a professional church worker. This event is a wonderful lab for each of us as we grow in our likeness to Christ … as our LOVE for others is strengthened and extended, as we reveal lives filled with JOY, seek PEACE in the midst of awkward moments and situations, have PATIENCE when it would be easy to fly off the handle, show KINDNESS to people known and unknown to us,
make GOODNESS a public expression of who we are, and
FAITHFULNESS is revealed as we center our lives not on things but on Jesus,

September 2 - Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Jesus protests against human customs being given the weight of divine law, while the essence of God's law is ignored. True uncleanness comes not from external things, but from the intentions of the human heart. Last week Jesus told us "the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life." Now James says God has given us birth by the word of truth. We, having been washed in the word when we were born in the font, return to it every Sunday to ask God to create in us clean hearts.
September 9—Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost James tells us to stop showing favoritism in the assembly, treating the rich visitor with more honor than the poor one. Jesus himself seems to show parti-ality in his first response to the Syrophoenician woman in today's gospel. Was he testing her faith in saying Gentiles don't deserve the goods meant for God's children? Or was he speaking out of his human worldview, but transcended those limits when she took him by surprise with her reply? Either way, the story tells us that God shows no partiality. Everyone who brings her or his need to Jesus is received with equal honor as a child and heir.
September 16 —Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost Three weeks ago we heard John's gospel's version of Peter's confession of faith. This week we hear Mark's version, when Peter says, "You are the Mes-siah." In John, the stumbling block is Jesus' invitation to eat his flesh, given for the life of the world. In Mark too the scandal has to do with Jesus' words about his own coming death, and here Peter himself stumbles over Jesus' words. But Jesus is anointed (the meaning of "messiah") in Mark only on the way to the cross (14:3); so we are anointed in baptism with the sign of the cross.
September 23 –Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost Today we hear James warn against selfish ambition, while the disciples quarrel over which one of them is the greatest. Jesus tells them the way to be great is to serve. Then, to make it concrete, he puts in front of them an actual flesh-and-blood child. We are called to welcome the particular children God puts in front of us, to make room for them in daily interaction, and to give them a place of honor in the assembly.
September 30 –Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost Someone is casting out demons in Jesus' name who isn't part of Jesus' own circle, and the disciples want him stopped. They appeal to Jesus, as Joshua did to Moses about the elders who prophesied without official authorization. Like Moses, Jesus refuses to see this as a threat. Jesus welcomes good being done in his name, even when it is not under his control. The circle we form around Jesus' word must be able to value good being done in ways we wouldn't do it, by people we can't keep tabs on.

We would like to thank members of Trinity and Pastors Patti and Steve for their love, concern and support at the time of Anthony’s untimely passing. Trinity had an important impact on Anthony’s spiritual life through the years. We appreciated the flowers, food, memorials, cards, calls, prayers, hugs, offers of help, and visits. We feel very fortunate to be a part of the Trinity family where everyone comes together when support is needed. Thank you so much for making the people from Bro-ken Bow feel welcome in our church and all the extra effort you gave and work you did on the day of the funeral. Your love and care helped lift us up during a very difficult time. We ap-preciate all of you and will always remember your kindness

GENTLENESS is seen in encounters of compassion and SELF-CONTROL is ours when we refrain from saying and doing things that might inflict pain or discomfort on others. You and I have the opportunity to use these FRUITS each and every day but these qualities permeated the planning for BFFF, the execution of all the activities and the in-volvement in the BFFF . This event (and certainly oth-ers) helps create an environment for us to grow and use these qualities Jesus is calling us to have and develop. I am grateful we have the BFFF for so many reasons … it is one more opportunity for us to grow thanks to the downpour God provides us! Thanks for being TRINITY! Pastor Patti
Pastor’s column continued from page 1
Celebrate grandparents Several sociological factors are affecting grandparents’ role. Because families are spread out geographically, “long-distance grandparenting” is now common. On the other end of the spectrum, many grandparents are actually raising their grandchildren. Despite modern-day challenges and changes, grand-parents are more important than ever for providing kids with a sense of history and heritage. Whether through social media and Skype or special outings and storytelling, the older generation has a variety of ave-nues for connecting with grandkids. In the process, grandpar-ents can share their Chris-tian faith. “One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts” (Psalm
145:4, NIV).

―WHAT’S NEXT?‖
On Sunday, August 26th twenty-eight folks met to see what God might be calling our congregation to do next. It was a great “meeting-of-the minds and hearts” as small groups talked about possible ideas for us as a congregation. A multitude of ideas were shared and they were sorted into three categories that overlap a great deal. The three cate-gories are:
Community Action: possible ideas would be a Com-munity Garden, Community Make-a-wish (assisting locally or larger area)
Bible Studies: possible ideas community/short term Bible studies, Bible Study night with various op-tions, tour of homes with a spiritual bent/Bible study, have a theme each month with a Bible study to go with it, incorporate our Harvest Event with a trip to the co-op and a study, video Bible Study, Prayer Committee
Fellowship and the Arts: possible ideas would be Community Thanksgiving meal, Pot-Luck-with-a-Purpose (connect a potluck with a ministry of interest), Road Rally with a purpose.
After a great hour of brainstorming, and discussion was that a group of four folks (Linda Fecht, Linda Booth, Peggy Hinrichs and Karen Frerichs) will move forward with the idea: “Potluck with a Purpose” and Marilyn Hays will seek interest from others to move forward with a Thanksgiving meal. There was also a desire to talk about small groups that might develop. There will be a “WHAT’S NEXT?” PART 2, so watch for further opportunities to participate in strengthening our min-istry.
Thanks to the ladies for all your
hours of quilting. Carol Joy Holling 24th Annual Quilt Auction was held
on July 24th. The quilt that Trinity send brought $375.00 to add to the
grand total of $99,000 raised for
NLOM’s Carol Joy Holling Camp
at Ashland, Neb. A break in the hot weather encouraged more than 650 to
come out for a day of fun and a chance to bid on more than 360 quilts and specialty items that had been donated by quilters and
craftsmen from all over Nebraska.
