PASTOR’S GREETING, INTRODUCTIONS AND LIFE OF THE CHURCH
CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 52
L: I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever. P: I will thank You forever, O God, because of what You have
done. I will proclaim Your name, for it is good. L: Let us worship God!
HYMN #321 The Church’s One Foundation AURELIA ST. DENI (See music in bulletin)
PRAYER OF CONFESSION In the mirror we call scripture, Revealing God, we see ourselves for who we are and who we are not. We whine about those who are not doing what we think they should, and ignore our own failings. We speak words which nibble away at the life of our family and friends. We step over the poor (or drive by them) on our way to get more and more, ignoring their needs. Forgive us, Father. Sit us down at Jesus' feet, so we may learn the balanced life You intend for us. Then, and only then, can we set aside our grudges, and offer our gifts to our neighbors; can we stop licking at our wounds, and bring healing to others; can we reach out and welcome our sisters and brothers, even as we have been welcomed into Your heart through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
(Silence for personal confession.)
Amen.

DECLARATION OF PARDON Phil. 2:9-12 L: Hear the words of Paul when he writes that God has bestowed on Christ “the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend . . . and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” As we make our confession we have the assurance that the exalted Christ intercedes on our behalf. P: Thanks be to God! L: Let us stand and give glory to God!
GLORIA PATRI Hymn #579 Glory be to the Father And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, World without end – Amen, Amen.
PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST
SPECIAL MUSIC Psalmody No. 1 Lyndi Peacock Lyndi Peacock, Piano & Vocal
I waited for the Lord my God, And patiently did I bear. At length He did to me incline, My voice, my cry to hear.
He drew me up from the fearful pit, Out from the miry clay. Upon a rock He set my feet, Establishing my way.
He put a new song in my heart, His name to magnify. That men might thereby know His truth, And on His strength rely.
O magnify the Lord with me, Let us exalt His name. The one who trusts in the Lord our God Will never be put to shame.
O Lord my God, full many are The wonders that Thou hast done. And I will ever sing Thy truth, Until the battle is won.
[Children & Youth excused for Sunday Classes.]

PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES, GIFTS, AND COMMITMENTS
OFFERTORY A Prayer of Quiet Thankfulness Fenton Groden
DOXOLOGY Hymn #592 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
SCRIPTURE READING: Colossians 1:15-28 (NRSV, Pew Bible pp. 956-957)
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16 for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.
21 And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him— 23 provided that you continue securely established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel.
24 I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am
completing what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. 25 I became its servant according to God’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
SERMON Empowered by God Rev. Dr. Sue Marie Baskette
5
CONFESSION OF FAITH Rom. 8:1, 28, 38, 39 We believe there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus; for we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to God’s purpose. We are convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
HYMN #702 Christ Be Beside Me BUNESSAN (See music in bulletin)
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND INTERCESSION, CONCLUDING WITH THE LORD’S PRAYER
The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power
And the glory, forever. Amen.

AURELIA7.6.7.6.D
This hymn was one of twelve written by an English curate to affirm the articles of the Apostles’ Creed withbiblical allusions such as 1 Corinthians 3:11 here. Though not created for this text, the tune was joined to it in1868, and the two have been inseparable ever since.

The lines given here convey the central message of the longer song for which they form the refrain. Theprincipal Scripture reference is 1 Corinthians 3:16–17, Paul’s reminder to the Christians at Corinth that “[they]are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in [them].”

702Christ Be Beside Me
This text adapts part of a traditional Irish prayer associated with St. Patrick (see also no. 6). Such a prayer forprotection is known as a lorica, from a Latin word for “breastplate” or “armor.” It is set to a Gaelic melodythat gained wide popularity in the 1970s.

INTERSECTIONS CLASS is currently studying and discussing the book The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation by Richard Rohr and Michael Morrell. This book delves into the central doctrine of the Trinity using one of the metaphors of the early church leaders who described the one God who is three persons as a divine dance. The book discusses how a deeper conception of Father, Son and Holy Spirit can transform our relationship with God and renew our lives. All are welcome. Sundays at 9:00 AM in the Sicatuva Room.
FRIDAY WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP meets Friday's at 9:30 AM in Sicatuva. We are on SUMMER BREAK.
