Welcome Thank you for joining us today as we gather together to worship our Savior and King, Jesus. This service is a liturgical service, meaning the congregation is an active participant. Theologian James K.A. Smith writes, liturgy “shapes and constitutes our identity by forming our most basic attunement to the world... our ultimate love/desire is shaped by practices, not [only] ideas that are merely communicated to us.” So we orient our heart and mind through the rhythm of poetry, song, vows, music, bread and wine. And through that process, we immerse ourselves into the ancient story of the Christian faith.

In the liturgy, the congregation participates in the bold liturgy. During the Communion portion of our service, all baptized Christians are welcome to the Lord’s Table. Restrooms are located in the outside breezeway located next to the parking lot. At this time please silent your phones or noisemakers.

Preparation As we gather together into this sacred time, quietly consider anew the mystery of the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us. Just as Jesus the Christ was present two thousand years ago walking with and among his people, so we believe that in the gathering together of God’s holy church, Jesus meets us here as our risen Lord and King.

The Prelude

The Collect for Purity Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord.

People Amen.

The Processional is the act of movement in worship by a group of people for the sake of all. In the Entrance, the procession symbolizes the entire congregation coming before the Lord.”

The Summary of the Law Jesus said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. Why do we sing in church? As God's people gather for worship, we focus our attention on God and away from ourselves by singing together. We respond with thanksgiving to God, because we have hope. And we sing because it is the best and most complete response that we can utter.

The Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with your spirit. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever.

A collect (ka-‐likt) is a form of prayer in the Western Church that some argue dates back to (A.D. 483). The term reflects the “function of the prayer it described, namely that of gathering the people together for worship.” It emphasizes the unique focus of worship according to the church season and is designed to “collect” our hearts into common prayer.

As the Bible is the primary means by which God speaks to and edifies his people, we read and listen to the Scriptures together in worship. In ancient Israel and the early church, services of worship were organized for the public reading of scripture – a practice vital to building up the community of faith

The Sermon Guide: 2 Corinthians 13:11–14 (ESV) — 11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 All the saints greet you. 14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Matthew 28:16–20 (ESV) — 16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

A sermon is not just teaching for living; it is mainly a time when Christ encounters his people

through his Word.


The Affirmation of Faith

“The Nicene Creed”

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

When we affirm our faith together, it reminds us that we are part of an ancient and global faith. This was the last great creed of the undivided church. The Nicene Creed forms the great theology of the Holy Trinity, the great drama of redemption, and the hope of restoration from sin through faith in Jesus Christ.

Grant your heavenly grace to all people, especially these gathered here, that with meek and reverent hearts, we may hear and trust your holy Word, devoting our lives to your righteous service. Ascended Lord, in your mercy,

Prayer is a vital act in Christian worship. To aid in preparing the congregation for prayer, the church developed litanies dating back to the early church of Antioch. A litany is a prayer form in which a minister says or sings a petition followed by a congregational response. Prayer doesn’t change God-‐ prayer changes us. Through prayer we are changed and transformed into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ. To pray means that we must be open and willing to change.

We humbly ask you, gracious Lord, to comfort and strengthen all those who, in this earthly life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. Ascended Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. I invite you to add your own requests at this time.

We bless your holy Name for all your servants who departed this life in your faith and fear, praying you would grant us grace to follow their good examples, that with them we might partake in your heavenly kingdom. Ascended Lord, in your mercy,

Minister Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Confession and Absolution* Minister All who truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and seek to be reconciled with your neighbors, and intend to lead the new life, following the commandments of God, and walking in his holy ways: draw near with faith and make your humble confession to Almighty God.

All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those, who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Because sin is so pervasive in both our corporate and individual lives, Christians and non-‐Christians are called to come before the Father with honesty and transparency, confessing our brokenness in thought, word, and deed; and asking for both forgiveness and healing through Jesus Christ......

Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.

“The Eucharist is the definitive action practiced in the Christian community that keeps Jesus Christ before us as the Savior of the world and our Savior, and ourselves as sinners in need of being saved. The Eucharist is the sacramental act that pulls us into actual material participation with Christ (eating and drinking bread and wine) as he gives his very life “for us and for our salvation” (cf., the Nicene Creed)... The Eucharist puts Jesus in his place: dying on the cross and giving us that sacrificed life. And it puts us in our place: opening our hands and receiving the remission of our sins, which is our salvation.”

The Prayer of Consecration Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in your tender mercy, you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He offered himself and made, once for all time, a perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. He instituted this remembrance of his passion and death, which he commanded us to continue until he comes again. So now, Father, we ask you to bless and sanctify, with your Word and Holy Spirit, these gifts of bread and wine that we may partake of his most blessed Body and Blood.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

After supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

The Proclamation Celebrant Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith: All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Celebrant Lord and heavenly Father, with these holy gifts we celebrate the memorial instituted by your beloved Son, remembering his passion and death, his resurrection and ascension, and his promise to come again. Grant that by his merits and death, and through faith in his Blood, we and your whole Church may receive forgiveness of our sins and all other benefits of his passion, making us one body with him that he may dwell in us, and we in him. And here we offer to you, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a living sacrifice, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as

it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

The Prayer of Humble Access* We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness,

but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same

Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his

blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
