Hello Triangle Section Members,

I hope everyone enjoyed a great summer and is looking forward to very nice fall driving weather. I am guessing that by now most of you heard that the Triangle Section won Section of the Year for 2017! I want to congratulate all of you for your enthusiasm and participation that helped make winning the award possible. If you attended the Members Appreciation luncheon, you had the pleasure of hearing the announcement, receiving a special wine glass commemorating the award while enjoying a great lunch. Our Calendar of Events for the balance of 2018 is full of fun activities that I hope you will be able to attend. Three particular events you won’t want to miss are:• Oct. 7 - Octoberfest at Montague Lake in Cary. It

is open to all German automobiles and is hosted by our friends at the Hurricane Region Porsche Club. The Triangle Section is a sponsor for this event and working with the PCA to increase the MBCA’s participation. We are looking to do more fun events with several clubs in the area going forward.

Continued from previous page In congratulating Triangle on winning the Section of the Year award, Rick Siefert explained that by whichever method the committee used to evaluate the criteria, Triangle Section accrued the most overall points, even finishing first in four of the ten criterion. Steve Redwine, Bill Faison, and Newsletter Editor Vicki Wilson collaborated to complete the application process that required an extensive amount of data and details. The 10 categories with multiple criteria included: Membership numbers Newsletters Co-sponsored events Social events Auto-related events (technical session, rally, driving) Membership promotion Charity events Advanced event planning Section treasurer’s or financial report General statement Section of the Year is the third MBCA recognition for Triangle for 2017. Vice President / Events Chair Bill Faison was named Office of the Year and Triangle Section was awarded a First Place in Communications for digital newsletters. President Steve Redwine was the 2016 Officer of the Year. Triangle has a rich history of awards. The late Mike Dowry was Officer of the Year in 2008, and in 2005 while Dee Oglivy was president and Tom Lewis ws vice president, Triangle Section hosted StarTech and the National board Meeting. StarTech was so successful that the section returned the $2,500 seed money to national and had enough money left over to make a charitible donation. n

Appreciating Members with luncheon at Maggiano’s Little Italy

Parking lots at The Streets of Southpoint, an upscale mall in Durham, held more Mercedes-Benzes than usual on Saturday, September 8. Forty-five Triangle members gathered for lunch at popular Maggiano's Little Italy restaurant for a Members Appreciation luncheon sponsored by the Section. President Steve Redwine welcomed members and guests and conducted a brief business meeting prior to everyone breaking bread. He introduced three special guests who came to help Triangle celebrate its selection as 2017 Section of the Year: National President Gene Jurick from Texas; National Awards Chair / Central Region Director Rick Siefert from Missouri, and Eastern Region Director Doug Geganto from Georgia. As the business meeting concluded members quickly focused attention to satisfying appetites with appetizers of classic bruschetta with sausages and peppers, Italian tossed salad with ciabatta rolls, vegetable penne primavera, meat lasagna, and chicken parmesan. For those folks able to save some tummy room, the meal was deliciously completed by servings of NYstyle cheesecake, tiramisu and coffee. Overheard comments as members departed verified that this Members Appreciation celebration was a great success! Special thanks belong to Bill Faison for organizing this event.n

These Triangle members are all smiles in anticipation of delectable Italian cuisine to be served family-style following the brief business meeting. Seated from left are: Diane Kocsi, Lana McGlynn, Kathy and Fred Hayes, and Dave and Pat Waters. Each member received a wine glass commerating Triangle’s selection as 2017 Section of the Year.

National Awards Chair Rick Siefert, left, and National President Gene Jurick, right, came to Durham for the award presentation.

We All Scream for Ice Cream! Photos by Rob VanDewoestine

What better way to momentarily escape the North Carolina August heat than by gathering with fellow Mercedes lovers and sharing stories over bowls of that most delectable invention—ice cream. Rob and Barbara VanDewoestine graciously hosted the ice cream social for more than 30 Triangle members. They served a smorgasbord of ice cream treats in their pristinely clean garage at their beautiful Prairie style home in Durham.

Incidentally, folks at the ice cream social couldn’t help but notice that the

number of late model Mercedes driven to the event debunked the too-

often misconception that MBCA members just own older Mercedes.

Many in Triangle, as in other sections, own both late and vintage models of

our favorite marque.
