This message is short and sweet. Due to family issues I totally lost track of time and did not get the article sent in. Ron, doing his wonderful job of editor let me slide and write a quick note. I really appreciate all he does in getting the paper together and out to our members. It is a big job and it as well as the rest of the positions in our Association are volunteer.

I just want to take a minute and wish each of you a very Happy Thanksgiving. Take a moment to let your friends and family know how much they mean to you. I am very thankful for my family, my friends, the opportunity to serve as your president and all the blessings that have been bestowed on me.

Don’t forget to send in your winter convention reservation forms it is going to be really fun!

Happy Thanksgiving,Angie Marek

The month of October has slipped away into history for another year. It went way to fast and the shotgun stands in the corner gathering cobwebs which I am sure sadden the heart of the hounds.

I would like to dedicate this month to the PNW Men of Region 3. Particularly to the Club of Those Guys Off Road who have pretty much giving up their entire summer to building one trail within the Mt Hood National Forest. This is very important fi rst step towards achieving a trail system that allows a Class II user a meaningful outing in our National Forest within the state of Oregon.

This as all true Class II trail systems will require the Four-Wheel drive to be engaged. It is a sad thing that the Forest Service within Region 6 has closed Thousands of miles of this type of trail to Class II users. Many of these trails

had been used by our early ancestors for well over a hundred years and were handed down to us from our fathers to use. Most of these men encounter the Jeep in WW II and once returning from war purchase these jeeps for average fee of $250 dollars to take their families into the Mt Hood National Forest and the surrounding forest lands. In the early days of four wheeling there was no other way to access this forest except in a four by four. Jeeps were cheap and most of the family would fi t with camping supplies for the weekend thus the jeep became a household word and the public lands and forest could be accessed in less than a day’s drive from downtown Portland.

The following script is the words of Jon Halleaux of Those Guys OffRoad and I fell no need to change them. One of the newest trails in Oregon on public lands is located in LaDee Flats Off Highway Vehicle Routes in the Mt Hood National Forest. Yes it is a true Class II trail built by members of the PNW and you will need to engage the hubs and shift the short lever into low range. To view the map or copy it go to http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5301095.pdf

So many people have been involved in this project; I really appreciate all the time they have put in and help they have given me. Here is a list of some of the all-stars who have been there nearly every weekend with me so far.... (We have worked the trail 9 weekends straight so far). Dave Hiatt – ODF. You were there at Warn when Dave stepped up and volunteered his personal time to help design the trail system. He has driven hundreds if not thousands of miles to make this happen, and has spent countless hours in the fi eld, on the phone, and buried in paperwork to help us make this happen. He has taken the time to teach techniques for building sustainable, enjoyable class II trails in a wet forest, and is always there when I need a helping hand. We could not have done this without his assistance. Malcom Hamilton – Recreation Director USFS MT Hood National Forest. Malcom was who we fi rst worked with when discussing the need for trails and our desire to build them. He had the vision and understood our need for real trails. He helped guide us in the forest to obstacles we hope to include in future trails and helped us navigate through the processes that where new to us. Kathleen Walker – Westside Recreation Manager USFS MT Hood National Forest. Kathleen has helped us on the fi eld, in the offi ce, and in Salem. Legal class II trails are a brand new concept in the MT Hood National Forest, and together we have had to both learn a lot about what it would take to build out this entire OHV system. Aaron Pedersen – Westside Assistant Recreation Manager USFS MT Hood National Forest. Aaron is the local rec manager in the area we are building trails and his support for the project has been awesome. He has always been extremely positive of the work we are doing, thanks us for our time, and even helped arrange Tread Lightly! training at the Estacada Ranger Station. Scott Wagner – Clackamas River Ranger District USFS. Scott has been the man in the fi eld with us. He helped with organizing a crew to come brush the trails early on in our build. He came out to Tillamook with us and toured the trails out there to understand the type of trails and techniques we would use

to build them. It was his fi rst time ever wheeling, and he had a blast and it truly opened his eye to why we enjoy what we do. Unfortunately Scott’s position was recently cut, and I will miss working with him. He’s a great guy both professionally and personally.Tread Lightly! – Can’t say enough about this organization. They have helped us with grants, signage, and just general knowledge and support. Jason Ketterick and Justin Lilly have been awesome to work with, and have helped us get this trail construction off the ground. Bill Manbeck – Those Guys Off Road VP. Bill has been there with me since day one of meeting with the USFS to get this project started, and has been there nearly every weekend to help construct the trail. He has put his winch to the test to help haul up fallen logs to anchor the trail with, and has helped manage the crew of volunteers while I drive the excavator day and night to create the trail. Desmond Caravella – Those Guys Off Road. Desmond has worked countless hours on the excavator, often through the dark of night during fi re restrictions when that was the only time we could work. He has allowed us to use his tow rig to haul equipment and machinery to the trail. His dedication to this trail system and vision for creating obstacles has been inspirational. Ryan Simpson - Those Guys Off Road. I should also thank Ryans wife

Ryan has put in countless hours on the trail, and is letting us stage equipment at his house. Not only have we taken over his house with equipment, and having Ryan out in the woods with us all weekend, Ryan has also been serving as our master repair man, often working on the equipment all week so we can beat on it all weekend. Dusty Webinger – Those Guys Off Road. Dusty has been another one who has put in massive hours on the excavator shaping trail, and harvesting boulders. He has also helped trouble shoot equipment in the fi eld, fi ne tune obstacles, and keeps us all going with his great sense of humor. Kyle Condray – Those Guys Off Road. Kyle is one of our newest club members but has shown his heart and commitment to the trail system by helping harvest fallen logs, hand harvesting rocks, and testing obstacles with his little but mighty TJ. ChazWolfard – Grand Krawlers Off-Road. Chaz has helped the trail in so many ways, a lot of them without even stepping on the trail. Chaz has helped organize work parties and fund raising events and has been one of the main driving forces in getting our trail system and work parties advertised on KUPL New Country 98.7 FMTim Anderson – JeepTubes.com. Tim has teamed up with Chaz and has helped drive donations of time, equipment and material for the trail and fund raising activities. As if that wasn’t enough, Tim also recruited his Dad and his 4 wheel drive Kubota Tractor to come out to the trail to help us shape trail sections, haul logs, and move boulders. TicTak – KUPL Evening DJ.TicTak has been awesome to work with to help gain exposure to the new trail system, our work parties and our need for equipment. When he heard we needed a dozer and heavy machinery to rip the road, he jumped on the airwaves and called out for people to step up. My phone began to ring off the hook and we literally had over 100 people at our

next event. TicTak and the entire KUPL crew continue to assist us in advertise fund raisers and work parties. They’ve really helped us catch our second wind. Chris Sines – Sines Construction. When the call went out for big machinery Chris was the fi rst to step up. He asked not only what we thought we needed, but what we needed it for. This helped greatly, because having him understanding what we were doing enabled him to pick the right piece of machinery for the task. He showed up with a massive excavator attached to his dump truck, and that day he created some of the most awesome obstacles on the trail... work that would have taken us a week he was able to complete in a day. Corey Young – Generous donor. When I asked for help with money

for fuel, or machinery rental Corey stepped up, and donated 220 gallons of off road diesel... even delivering the fi rst 110 gallons to us. Now that may not seem like much, but Corey lives over 2 hours away.... each way. His donation saved us an easy $900-$1000. Without this donation we likely would not have been able to get as far into this build as we have. There are so many more people I should be naming, Steve, John, Pat, Sean, Mike, Ryan and many more. This has truly been a project that is being done by the community for the community. It’s been challenging, and at times has seemed impossible, and we still have a lot of work to do, but the way the community has come out and supported this system has made overcoming the challenges possible and well worth the hard work and effort we will continue to put into this

system. Lastly, I should also list you Randy and the rest of the DC4W crew. You and Mona have been a huge help with helping me understand how to work my way through the river of red tape, and seeing the work you and the DC4W crew have done on the East side of the mountain has been an inspiration to us over here to keep at it, have perseverance, and never give up in working for real class II trails in our local forest. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thank you Jon and all of those mentioned above for creating a Class II trail on public lands. I look forward to the rest of the Class II trail system in this area.

Above is testimony that you and your club could and should also be involve

in the next chapter of Class II trails in the state of Oregon. This year tens of thousands of road miles have been or will soon be closed to Class II users. We; the people of Oregon need men like the above mentioned to step up and change the world we currently live. If you and your club (or clubs) don’t step and create routes for our usage on public land our future will revolve around very short Class II trails. The problem with these short trails they are loved to death in short order and taken thousands of miles of Class II trails have been closed to us we need thousands of miles of trails have to be built. The PNW needs your help or the existing Class II trails will soon be over crowded to death.

Respectively submitted: Randy Drake Oregon Executive Director.

4W613 Abandoned Truck RemovalReport & photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

Someone left their truck on 4 wheel drive trail 613 south of Strobach Mountain in the fall of 2011. The Department of Natural Resources had to go through the legal stuff to be able to move it off of the land they manage. This was a long process and by the time we were given the go ahead to move the truck, it had been vandalized by many. The first time we saw the truck in June 2012, the battery was missing. A month later someone had shot the truck up with small caliber bullets.

On August 26th, 2012 a few clubs of the Pacific Northwest 4 Wheel Drive Association Region 4 got together to remove the abandoned truck off 4W613. These clubs were Yakima/Kittitas Forest Watch (a division of Eastern Washington Adventures), Jeeping Nomads and Yakima Ridgerunners.

We met up at Nasty Creek Corrals around 9 AM to air down and sign the DNR volunteer form. The DNR gave us a battery and some gas to see if we could get the truck started. Josh Wesselius (Yakima Ridgerunners) and Steve Haverfield AKA "Havo" (Yakima/Kittitas Forest Watch) bought up four tires on 8 hole Ford wheels just in case the wheels on the truck were missing. Steve Haverfield (Yakima/Kittitas Forest Watch) hauled the tires on his Toyota truck. James Ewing (Eastern Washington Adventures) brought up his K5 to tow the abandoned truck.

We had a drivers meeting and then convoyed up to the abandoned truck. Mike Nelson from the DNR rode with Ron Rutherford (Jeeping Nomads).

A long the way we regrouped at the Strobach Mountain 4x4 Trailhead and then again on Strobach Mountain. Once at the abandoned truck we found some more damage to the truck. Some bigger bullet holes were added, the carburetor was missing and someone took the tires along with the lug nuts.

A lot of volunteers went to work getting the truck ready to be hauled off the trail. The truck was sitting on the ground so it had to be jacked up which was not that easy since it was on the side of a hill. Volunteers dug holes for the tires so the truck would not have to be jacked real high. They put on the tires that Josh and Havo brought up. Josh also had some lug nuts. They used Havo's on board air and impact gun to bolt on the rims.

As the guys worked on getting the tires on, Darin (Eastern Washington Adventures) and Kris Eims (Yakima Ridgerunners) worked on breaking the steering free. Ron Rutherford (Jeeping Nomads) got the guys with the winches lined up to pull the truck onto the trail.

Once everything was ready they winched the abandoned truck onto the trail with Josh Wesselius (Yakima Ridgerunners) and Unknown (Jeeping Nomads) TJs. Darin Clack (Eastern Washington Adventures) steered the abandoned truck.

Next Josh Wesselius (Yakima Ridgerunners) used his TJ the hold back and push the abandoned truck steered by Darin Clack (Eastern Washington Adventures) down 4W613 then out the Strobach Mountain 4x4 Trail.

At the end of the Strobach Mountain 4x4 Trail the volunteers pulled off the 4 loaner wheels and left the truck on the ground for the towing company to pick up.

I would like to thank all the volunteers that gave up their Sunday to help with the abandoned truck removal.

Forest Watch Volunteer Program The "Forest Watch Volunteer Program" is open to everyone. All outdoor enthusiasts including campers, hikers, bird watchers, horsemen, fishermen, hunters, ATV riders, 4 wheelers, snowmobilers, etc are encouraged to participate.

This is a volunteer program for those who are willing to report violators that break the rules on our Public Lands. If people know we are watching then hopefully we can lessen the damage done and keep access to our public lands open and reduce the amount of money being spent for repairs to these areas.

2012 BlueRibbon Board of Directors Election Results

LAS VEGAS, NV (October 29, 2012) -- The BlueRibbon Coalition is proud to announce the results of the recent BRC Board of Directors Election, which saw the re-election or election of four candidates to positions on the BRC Board of Directors.

Re-elected to the BRC Board of Directors is Joni Mogstad, who currently serves as our President. The three new candidates elected to the board are Chad Booth, Kevin Carey and Dan Thomas. The BlueRibbon Coalition would like everyone to join them in welcoming these fine new board members. Each of them brings a number of outstanding assets to the recreational access table, and we look forward to working with them as they assume their new positions at the onset of 2013.

BRC would also like to thank all those who participated in the election and submitted their vote. This year's election--along with the BRC General Membership Meeting itself--went off without a hitch primarily due to the input of these dedicated participants!

The final tally of election results was tabulated at the BRC General Membership Meeting on October 27, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada. All votes were gathered from members in good standing, and were tabulated on location, online, via absentee ballot, or via proxy vote. The rules and standards used in the election, as well as those of the Board of Directors itself, are outlined in the Bylaws of the BlueRibbon Coalition, Inc.

Trail Political Action Committee (TPAC)

Dear Trail Voter,

The mainstream media is working overtime to bias the news to discourage pro-trail voters in blue and battleground states in the hope that you will give up and stay home. The Trail PAC is going to counter that with the 1st ever pro-trail social media week. This national counter offensive is called OPERATION SOARING EAGLE.

Some congressional races are won or lost by less than 50 votes or just one vote per precinct. With the election just a few weeks away, it is important for trail voters to inform their Facebook friends about our targeted races and encourage them to go to the polls on November 6 and VOTE!

TPAC knows many people are busy trying to make a living and don’t have time to follow political campaigns. That is why it is important for YOU to LIKE the pro-trail candidates below so your social networks throughout the country will know about these candidates and the issues.

TPAC is not asking for any donations today. Our national counterattack is FREE. All we ask of you is to go to the following races and LIKE them. Also, feel free to share your support of the Trail PAC and these candidates

Gloria announced that she is handing over the program to Teia Ireland (Yakima Kittitas Forest Watch). Region Director Earl Nettnin presented Gloria with a plaque thanking her for three years of serving as the Jr. Jeepers Advisor. Gloria was instrumental is getting our program up and running in Region 4. Thank you Gloria for all your hard work; the region appreciates it more than you will ever know. Other regions have been interested in seeing how our program worked.

PR: Clay Graham (Yakima Kittitas Forest Watch) will put information out to our Region 4 list on activities if you send him the information. He also will post it on Face Book if you want him to.

LAND MATTERS:Director Earl Nettnin asked Jeff Jones (DNR) to report on activities in the Ahtanum. Jeff said he is new to this program as he started last March so he’s only been on board for seven months; his experience has been with 4-legged mules and snowmobiles. He said he does not have a background in Jeeping, Quads etc. so he does not really know what challenges we face, but he is willing to learn, and work with us on what we would like to see happening. Jeff thanked the volunteers, he said without us things would not get done. He especially thanked everyone who attended the Ahtanum clean-up; and the volunteers who took out the abandoned pick-up on the 613 trail. The Ahtanum State Forest Plan is a ten year plan. The White’s Ridge Trail Head is a motorized trail head from December 15th to April 1st particularly for snowmobiles, the rest of the year it is a non-motorized trail head for hikers and equestrians. Jeff said some discussion on why quads and other motorized could not use it were spelled out in the plan for the Ahtanum State Forest. Jeff said they are building a ten mile trail for hikers and horsemen so they can use that trail head in the summer time. Jeff said this

will be completed next fall. He said several stumps have been removed from the trail head and they will be using some fencing and a toilet was put at the east end, also they brought water to it making it camping accessible, they also put in a covered pavilion. Jeff said it’s coming together pretty good, they are about a year behind. They are always looking for volunteer hours for the projects they have planned. In the plan it calls for another ORV Park. The plan called for expanding the Ahtanum campground, they have a really good spot above the Ahtanum Campground that they believe will be a start to expanding the campground. Jeff said he is looking for comments on what we would like to have so when they present the project for grants they will have some idea of what we want and what it will cost. Jeff stressed the importance of writing letters to our legislators in Olympia to appropriate funds so we can accomplish the projects. Grants are really hard to come by as several groups are competing for the same dollars. We really need to write letters stressing the importance of recreation in the state forest. Jeff said he thought it would be good to have all users sit down together and discuss what we would like to present to our legislators in January regarding capitol funds. Jeff said the Discover Pass dollars didn’t bring any new money to the program, it just allowed them to fi x the back log of maintenance. Logging has impacted everyone. We need to remember that this is a working forest and sale of logs is what funds the trust for our schools. Logging will take place until the snow fl ies so we need to be patient, roads will be closed from time to time. The bridge is in on the North Fork. Snow Cabin is open; a lot of new signs are up. The road from Jackass to the North Fork will not be a full time road. However, we are not giving up on it just yet, so please keep writing letters. To get a hold of Jeff use his cell phone 509-961-3525 or email him at [email protected], he is always glad to hear from you. He wants us to come and recreate in the Ahtanum. He would like to have the Forest Watch up and running again this winter. Jeff would like to get all users together sometime this winter and talk about various issues and concerns. Jim Putman our Washington State Executive Director for the PNW4WDA has a state meeting in January on this side of the mountains for land matters only so maybe Jeff would like to attend and have an opportunity to address the users. The Secretary will pass on Jeff’s information to Jim Putman.

Ron Rutherford (Jeepin’ Nomads) reported an area in the Ahtanum he had Jeeped in for about 25 years is now considered a riparian area,

and is closed to snowmobilers too because the groomer can’t get between the trees. Ron has been talking to the higher ups about keeping it open and some think it’s a good idea to open it others say NO. Ron isn’t giving up on this just yet.

Clay Graham (Yakima Kittitas Forest Watch) said the Ahtanum clean-up is scheduled for July 27, 2013.Clay also said there will be a meeting for the Wenas Wild Life area this Thursday at 6:30 PM at the Fire Station on Freemont in Selah because of the no shooting rules. Clay also said the Naneum Ridge State Forest Committee he is on had scheduled a fi eld trip but due to all the fi res it’s on hold for now.

Doug Conner (Roamin’ Chariots) tried to get an update of the status for Peterson Road to Juniper Dunes. No engineer was in the offi ce to answer questions. The road to Juniper Dunes is open.

Clay Graham said the Beverly Dunes clean-up is scheduled for April 27, 2013. He said there are no issues at this time.

NACHES AREA UPDATES: The Pyramid Bridge Trail (motorcycle Trail) has received the materials needed, but will not be able to work on the project until next July. A work party at Copper City is October 10 – 13. Jim Putman (The Hombres) is in charge of this, special arrangements were made with the Forest Service and they will have a special crew working with Jim and his people. The 1808 Project will go back to bidding, the Forest Service only received one bid and it was extremely excessive, so the new bid will go out to a wider audience. The recently presented grants to NOVA are fi nished and the RTP grants have been turned in; thanks to all who wrote letters of support. The Deep Creek Horse Camp and Trail Head Project planning is underway with Title II money. Minnie Meadows and Bake Oven Toilets have received Title II money; the exact date of project completion is unknown. Roads: The 1913 Bridge is fi xed; 1900 mile post 5.0 and 2.0 repairs are completed; Pileup Creek (1900) has the new crossing in but there is still some fi nishing construction occurring with a chance for some delays; the 1601 arch is in the process of going in now. Should be open in 3 weeks hopefully sooner; 1605 has always been open, but construction is occurring to enhance the crossing. In general several road projects and maintenance have experienced delays in the past couple months, and the south zone engineers are working hard to fi nish up all work possible before

Continued from page 14the snowfall. Several engineers were assigned to various tasks on fi res and were delayed due to the IFPL (Industrial Fire Protection Level) being at a Level III and some Level IV for some period of time. The future of ERFO (Emergency Road Repair Funds) Project is still in the planning phase and they are continuing to accept comments and feedback during the scoping period. The next news you will hear on them is when the EA/CE (Environmental Analysis/Categorical Exclusion) has been completed and the preferred alternative is presented then you will have a chance to comment during the offi cial comment period. The only project that will not have an offi cial comment period is the FSR 4517-117 on the Cle Elum Ranger District. CLOSURES: Engineers have been surveying 1501, 1703, and 1708 (word has it that someone removed the barricade on the 1501 and people are driving in the creek). Merrick Graves (Naches Ranger District & High Country Cruisers) said there is no money to put it back so if you are caught driving in the water it’s a fi ne of $1500. There is also a temporary fi re access to the 1702. We did hear from the Naches District that the PNW4WDA represents the most responsible users in the 4-Wheel Drive community and they hope that we will continue to spread the word respecting the closures. The NEPA 101 and Comment Writing Workshop has been postponed and they will let us know as soon as a new date has been set. They also plan to have a powerpoint that groups can use and share. FIRES: The fi res are winding down but conditions are still dry. Woodcutting has ended and will not be extended. NO campfi res on Forest Service land until the signs come down, if you are caught having one it’s a $1000 fi ne. They will not say the fi res are offi cially out until we get signifi cant snow fall. The next TWIG meeting is scheduled for November 6th Election Day and we are hoping it won’t be canceled. Michelle King the NEPA Planner for the Okanogan-Wenatchee National

Forest has taken on another job, she is now the Public Information Offi cer; Doug Jennings is retiring. Ron Rutherford (Jeepin’ Nomads) said he felt we had made some progress with the Naches District this summer working with Jeff Leisy (Naches Forest Service Trails) and that Jeff was ill, however, he is back on the job now taking things a little easier for a while. We are glad to hear he’s back. We still have no news on the Travel Management Plan it was to be out this fall and the Forest Revision Plan was to be out in the spring of 2013; they didn’t want them both coming out together. We have no news on either one of them.

Pam Remley (Volunteer Trails Coordinator & Shindig Wheelers) has not received anything from anyone on their adopted trails. They were to submit their hours and details of their work to her as well as the Forest Service. Some just submitted it to the Forest Service. This is still a work in progress so we need to have patience. They did have a trail appreciation work party in July.

LATE BREAKING NEWS: Copper City & Granite Lake CERCLA (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act) PROJECT. The Naches Ranger District would like you to review and comment on the proposed removal actions for the Copper City Mill Site and a mining prospect on the western shore of Granite Lake. After 100 years someone has determined that the mining operations that took place could be endangering health. Information on this can be found by going to http://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/okawen/landmanagement/projects click on the link under CERCLA projects for “Copper City Mill and Granite Lake Prospect Cleanup”. The offi cial comment period will end November 28, 2012. If you are on our alert list this information has already been sent to you.

The NOVA committee met the fi rst

week in October and we have not received any results of how the funding went. Recreation Trails Program (RTP) grants had 77 to review. Doug Conner (Roamin’ Chariots) sits on this committee; he said there was about 5.3 million dollars needed and only about 2 million dollars to award. He said letters are very important. He also said he was not planning to continue as he has done it for 8 years representing motorized, so an opening will be available.

Washington State Trails Conference: it’s not too late to attend October 25 – 28 in Vancouver, WA at the Hilton Hotel & Conference Center. If you have questions call Pete Beaupain 253-569-2473 or [email protected].

OLD BUSINESS:Pick Up A Mountain (PUAM) follow up. Coordinator Pam Remley (Shindig Wheelers) said she felt things went very well. She apologized again for forgetting to put one of the sponsors on the back of the shirts. The Eastern Washington Dirt Riders donated $250 and somehow they were left off the fi nal list that was turned in to the t-shirt place. Randy Hayes (Sand Commandos) stepped up and ran the Corn Shucking contest. The Desert Rats got tables ready for the pot luck on Saturday night and Yakima Kittitas Forest Watch headed up by Lisa Graham was in charge of cooking and serving the breakfast on Sunday morning. Next year Pam would like to have every club in Region 4 take on one of the jobs. Next year Luke Ireland (Yakima Kittitas Forest Watch) and Mike Palachuk (Shindig Wheelers) have volunteered to be in charge of the raffl e. Irene Davidson Naches District Ranger and her driver Jodi Leingang stopped by to see how things were going and they seemed impressed at the number of volunteers we had. Everyone seemed to have a great time and have said they will be back next year. Not everyone who attended

signed in and that’s a problem. Pam said we had three clubs from Region 1; four clubs from Region 2; nine clubs from Region 4; and one club from Region 7 as well as non PNW member clubs.

NEW BUSINESS:Next month nominations will be opened for Region 4 offi cers for 2013. Nominations will be opened again in January and voted at that time.

CLUB REPORTS: Due to the lateness of the hour club reports were not given.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:Remember to be sure and vote November 6th and remember who our friends are and vote accordingly.

For the fi rst time in 15 years the Sand Commandos are not having their Haunted House in October.

Sande Nettnin (Secretary/Treasurer & Desert Rats) thanked everyone for birthday wishes and the brownie with the candle. What a great bunch of people to spend your birthday with, I love you all.

FUTURE MEETINGS/EVENTSPNW4WDA BOARD meeting December 1, 2012 in Longview, WAWinter Convention February 8-10, 2013 in Bothell, WA hosted by Region 1

Randy Hayes (Sand Commandos) made a motion seconded by Gloria Joralemon (Shindig Wheelers) to adjourn the meeting at 9 PM; motion passed.

Respectfully Submitted,

4-Wheelin’ News OCTOBER 2012 19

A HALO FOR A DUST DEVILWritten by Brenda Bowie

When we hear halo we automatically think of angels, not steel rods and screws. This story consists of both.

On November 12th 2011 my husband, Dan Bowie, rolled his jeep three and a half times during our clubs annual snow run at Naches. Without hesitation, the club members of the Eldorado Dust Devils took immediate action. Dan was safely transported to an emergency vehicle and taken to the Yakima hospital where he was told he had broken his neck in two places. There was good news though. He wasn’t paralyzed and had complete function of all body parts. Needless to say still alive!

November 13th a device called a halo was installed on and around Dan’s head. The unpleasant part was four screws being driven into his skull in order to attach the halo and stabilize his head from any movement. After two days in the hospital Dan was stable enough to be taken home.

When we arrived home in Bonney Lake several hours later we received yet another blessing. Four club members had gotten together and delivered a hospital bed with bedding to our living room. Dan’s next three months would have been miserable without this bed due to the fact that he was heavily medicated and had to sleep sitting up. This alone was such an amazing and thoughtful gift that we would have never expected all that was yet to come.

All twenty-three family’s of the Eldorado Dust Devils joined together and scheduled daily meal deliveries to our home. This was very much appreciated and allowed me to focus all of my time on Dan’s needs and maybe squeeze in a nap here and there. Along with the meals came cash gifts from so many friends, club members and friends of friends who didn’t even know us. Including offers of doing any inside or outside household chores, etc. The generosity seemed to never end.

While Dan was receiving visitors on a daily bases, something even larger was brewing.

Our oldest son, Branden, whom witnessed his dad’s accident, had decided he wanted to rebuild his dad’s jeep and surprise him. Branden called a close friend and club member to discuss his plan. The two of them ran with it. It began with the Dust Devils acquiring a stock 1990 YJ. Soon the word got

out and others started donating parts, man hours, their skills and cash. Manufacturers where contacted and many contributed to the cause. Its unbelievable how the jeeping community came together to give to a fellow jeeper.

As the donations where pouring in, the Dust Devils gathered for their annual Christmas party. That evening our son Branden, along with our club members, presented to Dan a card and a picture of his future jeep. Dan was mind boggled, shocked and

speechless at fi rst. This was something he would have never dreamed of. More than half of that room was in tears, including Dan. That will be a Christmas nobody will ever forget.

At present day, Dan has made a full recovery and has returned to work with no limitations. The gifted YJ is still in the works but getting closer to completion. Dan is eager to go jeeping in his own rig again but we all know these things take time.

Although many thanks have been given over the last year, it never seems to be enough. So Dan, Brenda, Branden and Blake Bowie want to thank all of you that participated in Dan’s recovery and supported this cause. To those who came together to help us get through this unexpected event. It has enriched our hearts and lives. We truly can’t tell you how grateful we are of all of you. For taking time out of your own lives to help our family fi nancially, spiritually and showing us the true meaning of humanity. Thank You To All.
