Transcript of Tri-City News Real Estate Sept 16, 2011
Each spring, a great manygardeners are upsetwith withering daffodil
and tulip leaves that lookedunsightly for such a long periodof time. What really worriesme, however, are the numerouscomments folks have made about not plant-ing bulbs because of their sloppy foliage thatcan spoil the appearance of an otherwiseneat and tidy garden.
It would be a shame for any garden to losethese vibrant spring colours, simply becauseof a few leaves, when there are many waysto overcome the problem. The most obvioussolution is to group bulb plantings in pocketswhere they can make their wonderful dis-play and then die back without disruptingthe entire garden. If you can camouflagethem among other plants, so much the bet-ter. Secondly, by adding copious amounts ofsand when you plant the bulbs, they will notonly naturalize more easily but will also dieback more quickly. The most creative andeffective way to enhance a display of springbulbs is to plant them in combination withshrubs. With a little imagination, you cancome up with great combinations that giveyour garden a new look, conceal dying foli-age and make certain locations work over-time to keep that colour coming.
Flowering shrubs are a natural for com-panion planting with bulbs. I’ve often men-tioned the combination of miniature blueIris reticulata with the ‘Buttercup’ winterhazel (Corylopsis pauciflora), but also tryfragrant Daphne mezereum with the crocus‘Remembrance’. The lavender tones workmagic together. Winter heather is a naturalfor bulb combinations because it flowersfrom November until late April and thenit flushes out with lots of new growth toscreen bulb foliage. Try combining it withsome miniature narcissus, like ‘Minnow’,‘Hawera’ and ‘Jack Snipe’. Early blooming‘Star Magnolias’ (Magnolia stellata) could begreatly enhanced with an underplanting ofwhite narcissus like ‘Ice Follies’. When theleaves flush out on the magnolia, they wouldnicely conceal the narcissus leaves. Largermagnolias should not be left out either.‘Saucer Magnolias’ (M. soulangiana), thatoften lose their big blossoms prematurelydue to heavy spring winds or rains, wouldbe greatly enhanced by an underplant-ing of beautiful salmon ‘Angelique’ tulips.Flowering quince looks spectacular in anyspring garden, but a surrounding plant-ing of early double tulips would be a realclassy touch. Try ‘Peach Blossom’ aroundthe whites and pinks and the yellow ‘MonteCarlo’ around the orange and scarlet variet-ies.
White spiraeas offer all sorts of opportu-nities with red tulips. Spiraea thunbergii
would be aknockout withthe early tulip,‘Red Emperor’.The mid-season‘Snow Mound’(S. nipponicatosaensis)would lookgreat withred ‘Darwin’tulips and thelate-flowering‘Bridal Wreath’spirea (S. ar-quta) would benice combinedwith a redlily-floweringtulip. Spiraeas are great for covering up tulipfoliage.
Don’t forget about broad-leafed plantseither. One of the most overlooked sun orshade loving plant is the ‘Oregon Grape’(Mahonia aquifolium). Its yellow flowersand green holly-like foliage would combinebeautifully with the soft yellow narcissus‘Carlton’. Euonymus ‘Emerald n’ Gold’ andwhite/green ‘Gaiety’ provide a wonderful op-portunity for tulip planting. Bright colouredearly single or trumpet tulips could be un-derplanted for a delightful effect each spring. If the new growth was left untrimmed, itwould cover dying tulip foliage and then
both could bepruned at onceto save time.
Long-blooming,low-growingshrubs likepotentillas anddwarf spiraeasoffer tremen-dous potentialfor daffodil andtulip plantings. The red, whiteorange andpink blossomsthat begin inlate April canprovide a neat
contrast for late flowering varieties of bulbsor the green foliage can offer a backdrop, then cover for the flowers and leaves.
Hostas and ferns also provide good foliagecover for daffodil and tulip leaves in areaswith morning or dappled sunshine.
Frankly, the potential for fabulous combi-nations is unlimited. This fall, please take anew look at the opportunities for using yourtulip and narcissus bulbs to enhance yourexisting trees and shrubs. In doing so, younot only create a new dimension in colourschemes, you can also conceal the foliagethat too often can spoil the fresh look of yourspring gardens.
