Students attend 7 classes each day

School hours are 7:20 - 2:50

Classes are 55 minutes long

5 minute passing periods (class transitions)

3 lunch periods (A.B,C)

Each student is assigned a Counselor, Assistant Principal and Attendance Clerk according to your last name

ALL Students are required to take and pass five End of Course (EOC) exams to be eligible for graduation.

Earning College Credit while in High School

Students have an opportunity to earn college credits by taking AP and or Dual Credit courses.

Advanced Placement ● Credit earned by passing AP exam. Exam scores and credit awarded varies with each university.● Texas public universities will award credit for AP scores of 3 or higher at the discretion of the

university.

Dual Credit● Offered through Alvin Community College● Placement test required prior to enrolling in courses● Cost = $25 per credit hour plus textbooks● Opportunity to graduate with both high school diploma and Associate's Degree

What is Class GPA/Class Rank

Class Rank is a way to see how your academic achievements measure up to those of your classmates.

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a standard way of measuring academic achievement. Each semester grade earned is assigned to a grade point depending on the grade and level of instruction of the course. (see chart on next slide)

PreAP and AP Courses● PreAP and AP Courses are open to all students - please seek advice during your 4

year plan meeting.● Students need to complete the Pre AP/AP contract on the HS Campus Advanced

Academics page if selecting these courses.● You will not be able to request a change until weeks 7-9, and only after attending

tutorials and demonstrating educational need.● Some of the PreAP and AP courses have summer assignments - be sure to inquire

before the end of the school year.● AP courses indicate to 4 year universities that a student is prepared for the rigors of

college.● Human Geography and Computer Science Principles are the recommended

introductory AP Courses for Freshmen.● Students may be able to receive college credit with an AP Exam score of 3, 4 or 5

● Please contact your JH or HS Advanced Academics Specialist with any questions.

ASSETS Academy at JBH

ASSETS is one of the 4 high schools in Alvin ISD

• This is a school of choice – students choose to attend.

• Good option for CTE students in certification pathways who want to stay at JBH campus all day.

• Dual credit, credit recovery and initial credit opportunities

• There is an application and interview process.

• Information is available with your school counselor.

The ASSETS Advantage

• Small academic classes• (15 students/class)

• Provides intervention for social, personal, and academic conflict.

What is AVID?AVID is an academic, regularly scheduled elective class based on

writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method, and collaborative

grouping. The three main components of the program are:

• academic instruction

• tutorial support

• organization and time management

THE MISSION OF AVID

▶ AVID is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students, and most especially students in the middle with academic potential capable of completing a college preparatory path. AVID students:

● will succeed in rigorous curriculum

● will be involved in extracurricular activities in school

● will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges

● will prepare all students for college readiness and success in a global society

How does the AVID program contributeto the success of the students?

• Teaches study and organizational skills

• Uses English as a writing tool for learning

• Strengthens their writing skills

• Gives tutorial help through college tutors

• Teaches students to work collaboratively to be successful in the most rigorous courses

• Takes students to visit colleges and universities

• Assists students with the college application process for four year colleges and universities

2018-2019 Course Selection Process● Junior High and High School Counselors will meet individually with all

8th grade students to develop a 4 year plan● Letters will be mailed home to parents this month with a scheduled

date and time for their students conference.● Four Year Plans will be completed in Skyward. Students and parents

will be able to view in their Skyward Family Access Account● Courses selected in the four year plan will be used for 9th grade

course registration.
