The article featured Caroline Hill, Christin Kelly and Janet Oberholtlzer. It is an excellent read for any woman who is running or thinking of taking up the sport of running. The unique benefits that come with running is very inspiring. Nice job, Pacer girls!. The club continues to evolve with new changes on the horizon. We would like to see the club become more interactive with other local agencies such as Friends of Nolde, and the Berks Conservancy just to mention a few. Kim Rivera will be speaking at the March meeting. She is involved with the Girls On the Run organization. Her discussion hopes to center around more volun- teering from the Pacers. We, as an organization, can work with GOTR in helping to provide sneakers to young girls and boys who can not afford them otherwise. We received a very nice letter from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Blue Marsh Lake, thanking us for our ongoing dedication in volunteer- ing our time. TRAINING RUNS

FROM THE PRESIDENTThere was a very nice article in the Reading Eagle originally published on February 7th.

Her discussion hopes to center around more volun-teering from the Pacers. We, as an organization, can work with GOTR in helping to provide sneakers to young girls and boys who can not afford them otherwise.

We received a very nice letter from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Blue Marsh Lake, thanking us for our ongoing dedication in volunteer-ing our time. We are to be com-mended for the volunteering at Blue Marsh Lake. We received a very nice certificate expressing their appreciation.

Over the course of the next few months the newsletter and the website may take on a new and different look. We will be in the process of reorganizing the website and possibly making changes with the newsletter. The weekly eblasts appear to be well received. The eblasts are to inform everyone of what is occurring during that upcom-ing week. Mondays are the most likely day they will be sent out.

MEETING MINUTES by: Vera KochanLOCATION: JR’s Pizzaria February 14, 2013Treasurer’s Report: Shaun Luther presented the treasurer’s report and reported the club is in good financial standing. The taxes will be ready to be given to the accountant in about two weeks.Race Director’s Reports:Katie Exas reported on the third Shiver race. Neighbors are not happy with some of the traffic issues. There was a meeting with Muhlenberg Township officials after the race to discuss traffic issues. Next year the course may have to be modified in order to alleviate these problems. The banquet will be held after the last Shiver race on March 10 at the Temple Fire Company. Many volunteers are needed to help with the banquet. Please show up to help with this fun event.Mudfest will be held on Sunday March 30. Tom Chobot reported the Junior High Cross Country race will be held at the same location as last year. Ted Andrus reported The Run for the Ages race will be held on Sunday June 23. Ted will meet with Nolde officials on Friday February 15 to see if last year’s course can be used again for this year’s race.Stephan Weiss reported that hoodies for the Blues Cruise race have been purchased. The early purchase enabled the race director to make the purchase at a lower cost resulting in a substantial savings.Social events: David Feinauer, better known as Swamp, reported there will be an end of winter happy hour on Tuesday March 12 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Giannotti’s Restaurant in Wyomissing. On Saturday April 6, the Pagoda Pacers will be helping with trail maintenance at Nolde Forest. Volunteers are invited to go for lunch after the April 6 trail maintenance. If you cannot make this date, trail maintenance will also take place on March 23.There will be a Fat Ass run on Sunday March 3, leaving from Stephan Weiss’s house. If you plan on attending, please bring food or drink to share after the run. It was voted to have this event be an official pacer event, which allows this to be covered under the Pacer insurance policy.New Business: Katie Exas has been sending out weekly e-blasts to let members know of Pacer events that are happening every week. If you are not getting these e-blasts, please e-mail Katie at [email protected] and Katie will get you on the e-mail list.Deb Kenderdine has announced she will be stepping down from the scholarship committee. If you are interested in chairing the scholar-ship committee, please contact Katie Exas at [email protected] a near future Kate Murray will be resigning from her position of managing the website and compiling the newsletter. Polly Corvaia has offered to take over the newsletter. In the future the newsletter will be redesigned to cut down on the cost of the newsletter. There was interest in having someone from the Berks County Conservancy, and also have Kim Rivera, from Girls on the Run, come to a Pacer meeting to discuss ways the Pagoda Pacers could offer volunteer services to these groups. On Tuesday February 13, there was an officers meeting to discuss suggestions given at the January meeting on ways to spend some of the clubs revenue. The importance of having a two year reserve was discussed, so the spending may be modified from one year to the next. Below are ways the board decided on spending some of the money. Hiring a person or company to design a new website for the club was discussed. The website would be designed so it would be easy for an officer to add or modify the website. Beth Auman offered to be the person in charge of this. If you have any suggestions for things that should be on the website, know anyone that is experienced in this area, or could help with the design of a new website, please e-mail Beth at vicepresident@pagodapacers.

(continued on page 5)

Shiver #3 had 265 runners finishing the 5K and 185 runners finishing the 10K, for our 3rd highest turnout for a Feb Shiver. As always, thanks to all of the volunteers!

Prior to the race, Sue, Katie and Beth, along with Beth Auman and Phil Lechner met with representatives from Muhlenberg Park and Rec and the fire police to discuss possible changes to alleviate congestion on the road, so that we have as little impact as possible on the residents. It seems the main issue is when the cars leave the park, creating a very long line of traffic on Stoudt’s Ferry Bridge Rd. We are going to better control cars leaving the race, allowing residents to travel Stoudt’s Ferry as freely as possible. We appreciate your understanding if it takes an extra couple of minutes to leave the park.

Shiver#4 will be held March 10th. As always we need more volunteers for this race. Specifically, we need 3 or 4 people willing to take results off of the board, so that the race directors can calculate results as soon as possible. We also need the usual help parking, on the road, at the finish line, clean up, water stop and within the house (serving soup, constantly filling the snack baskets, keeping the bagel table full). Anyone helping with registration, should arrive at Jim Dietrich Park between 9:00 & 9:30; anyone helping during the race, should arrive by 10:30; either way, look for one of the race directors and we can find something for you to do.

The awards ceremony will be held immediately after the 4th race, at the Temple Fire Company, 4963 Kutztown Rd. Note, this is the same location as last year, only about 3 miles from Jim Dietrich Park. We will have directions at the 4th race. We are looking for more door prizes. If anyone can donate personally, or secure a door prize, please notify one of the race directors. To be eligible to win a door prize, simply complete the survey at the awards banquet. A cold buffet will be served shortly after noon, followed by door prizes and then the awards. Due to the costs associated with the party, we will follow the guide-lines we established a couple of years ago.

The party is FREE to everyone who has either:(1) Finished 3 or more races in this year’s series – please bring your race number from the 4th race to the party, it will be your ticket for free entry. We will place an additional label on the back of your number which will indicate your eligibility. (2) Assisted with any of the races.(3) Paid for the series. We will be charging all others (including Pacers who do not fall into one of the above categories), a $10.00 fee to help cover some of our costs. (continued on page 3)

Remember, to help us maintain accurate results, DO NOT COMPLETE ANOTHER REGISTRATION FORM if you already ran this year. If you paid for the series, registra-tion is in the front room of the house. If you are paying race by race, we have a number for you at the ‘single race registration’ table in the 2nd room. If you have not previ-ously registered for the 2012-2013 series, registration is also in the 2nd room.

Thanks for all the support we have received and hope to see many of you at the Shiver, either running or volunteer-ing! ~Sue, Beth, & Katie

There have been discussions of having a Pacer event that is free of charge. It was decided to have the annual picnic as the free event. The picnic was chosen because it is held outside and space would not be an issue. With offering the picnic as a free event, changing the menu, and having music, the club is hoping to have this event gain popularity once again.Interest was expressed in finding a way to donate money to Berks County youth, possibly supplying running shoes for athletes who come from families that cannot afford to buy them.Since many Pagoda Pacers run on trails in Berks County, having the Pagoda Pacers Athletic Club join organizations like Friends of Nolde, Blue Marsh, or Berks County Conservancy was discussed. The club would like these organizations to know that the Pagoda Pacers are interested in their organizations. If you already are an active member in any of these organizations, please let Katie Exas know.Expanding the scholarships also was agreed upon.

The Road Runner’s Club of America offers these running safety tips:

Don’t wear headphones. Use your ears to be aware of your surroundings. Your ears may help you avoid dangers your eyes may miss during evening or early morning runs.

Run against traffic so you can observe approaching automobiles. By facing on-coming traffic, you may be able to react quicker than if it is behind you.

Look both ways before crossing. Be sure the driver of a car acknowl-edges your right-of-way before crossing in front of a vehicle. Obey traffic signals.

Carry identification or write your name, phone number, and blood type on the inside sole of your running shoe. Include any medical information.

Always stay alert and aware of what’s going on around you. The more aware you are, the less vulnerable you are.Carry a cell phone or change for a phone call. Know the locations of public phones along your regular route.

Trust your intuition about a person or an area. React on your intuition and avoid a person or situation if you’re unsure. If something tells you a situation is not “right”, it isn’t.

Alter or vary your running route pattern; run in familiar areas if possible. In unfamiliar areas, such as while traveling, contact a local RRCA club or running store. Know where open businesses or stores are located in case of emergency.

RRCA General Running Safety TipsRun with a partner. Run with a dog.

Write down or leave word of the direction of your run. Tell friends and family of your favorite running routes.

Avoid unpopulated areas, deserted streets, and overgrown trails. Avoid unlit areas, especially at night. Run clear of parked cars or bushes.

Ignore verbal harassment and do not verbally harass others. Use discretion in acknowledging strangers. Look directly at others and be observant, but keep your distance and keep moving.

Wear reflective material if you must run before dawn or after dark. Avoid running on the street when it is dark.

Practice memorizing license tags or identifying characteristics of strangers.

Carry a noisemaker. Get training in self-defense.

When using multi-use trails, follow the rules of the road. If you alter your direction, look over your should before crossing the trail to avoid a potential collision with an oncoming cyclist or passing runner.

Call police immediately if something happens to you or someone else, or you notice anyone out of the ordinary. It is important to report incidents immediately.

The RRCA encourages our members to reproduce and circulate these tips.
