INT. ANTONIO'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - DAY1.

SOUNDS of Flies buzzing about. Mixed with Heavy Breathing.

It's dark. Except for a single beam of sunlight comingthrough the draped living room window. The sunlight cutsthrough the particles of dust, musty air, and insects flyingin and out of its path.

We follow the shaft of light to the pained, unconscious faceof RICARDO RODRIGUEZ (33) Upside down, writhing on thehardwood floor, fighting the demons in his dream and losing.

ANGLE ON RICARDO'S FACE -- eyes rapidly moving back andforth under his eyelids -- face tight --- struggling --

Kneeling over him is LUIS ANDRADE (76), grandfatherly old

man with thinning grey hair, glasses, a navy fedora, heavycoat, winter boots...

LUISEasy..Easy!..Easy! Ricky its me,.. Luis...Sophia's father.(beat)are you ok?

Ricardo sits up -- Looks around -- dazed -- confused -- thenrecognition

RICARDO(uncertain)

LUIS(stands)

Ricardo looks up at Luis, shakes his head, rubs his eyes.

ANGLE ON CU of Ricardo's Face -- PANIC -- CONFUSION

Luis takes a step toward the window. Pieces of broken Glass

crunch under his boots. He bumps into ...

ANTONIO RODRIGUEZ (56) on the floor, face down under thewindow sill. Empty beer cans and a half empty bottle of Jacklies about next to him.

LUIS(dissapointed to Antonio,in Spanish)

Ahh Shit... not again

Luis kneels down..

LUIS (CONT'D)I thought the doc told you to.....

He pulls on Antonio's shoulder. Antonio's dead empty eyesstare past him.

Luis stands up abruptly and covers his nose and mouth withthe handkerchief.

Antonio's neck is cut from ear to ear. Flies buzz around thepool of congealed blood underneath Antonio's Body.

Luis backs away to the door. He looks over to Ricardo on the

floor.

LUIS(to ricardo)

Shit...What happened Ricky ...

Ricardo struggles to all-fours His legs buckle as he triesto stand, but falls smack-bang into the wall and uses it forsupport.

RICARDOI....I....can't...remember....

LUIS(to ricardo)

Luis' voice echoes...

ANGLE ON ...CU of Ricardo as he grabs his head with bothhands and slides back down to the floor. His eyes are closed

FLASHBACK TO:

A man turns to us and places a CURVED KNIFE into our hand --We see him. (We'll know him later as Gio) --- a FLASH --- weare behind a man with the Knife in our hand, its Antonio,our arm is around Antonio's neck, SUPER SLOW MOTION Staccatostyle.. Antonio's face is violently contorted both of hishands trying to pry off our arm, we rip our arm back, theknife blade rips open flesh, blood spatters everywhere ---FLASH.

BACK TO:

Ricardo lunges toward Antonio's corps in a half crawl.

RICARDO(angry, distraught)

Nooooo.

Luis bends down to pick up the knife..

LUISTell me what happened...

Ricardo lies on the floor. Tears streak down his face.

RICARDOI don't...I can't.....

LUISI'm going to help you Ricky...

Luis wraps the knife in the handkerchief and puts it intohis pocket..

Ricardo begins to shiver, his teeth chatter.

Luis sees Ricardo's JACKET on the floor. He picks it up andcovers Ricardo's shoulders with it as he and the jacket givea warm hug.

A small clear ziplock baggie with a white powdery substancefalls out of Ricardo's jacket pocket.

EXT. RIVER – BREAK OF DAWN 2.

The morning sun casts a soft golden glow on a passing BARGEon the river carrying cargo.

The sounds of Seagulls calling out each other in thedistance.

A wake from the passing barge breaks against the rocks undera dilapidated dock.

A FISHERMAN whistles a happy tune. He is carrying hismorning catch in a bucket, in one hand, and a fishing rodand tackle box in the other.

THUMP.THUMP.

Bobbing up and down in the water is a body wrapped in whiteplastic bound in Black tape.

THUMP.THUMP.

The fisherman looks toward the floater as another wakethrusts the plastic-wrapped body against the piling.

THUMP.THUMP.

A single tuft of blonde hair sticks out from the tape.

FISHERMANGod Damnit.

He drops the tackle box and rod to the ground and dumps thebucket of fish into the river.

He pulls out his cell phone from his pocket and presses 911.

EXT. ROSELLE - CITY SIGN - MORNING3.

A police car wipes the frame to reveal the "Welcome toRoselle" city sign shimmering in the morning sun.

EXT. POLICE STATION - CONTINUOUS4.

A handful of Feds and local cops enter the Roselle PoliceStation. FBI AGENT ISABELLA MARCHELLO (35) busty, beautiful,

but stern in dark slacks, blouse, holster, badge, andsunglasses, scans the parking lot. She rushes past theuniformed officers and enters the building.

EXT. FISH MARKET

LUKE DEMPSEY, late 30s, a bruisers of a Big man leansagainst the storefront, smoking. Wearing a black leatherjacket, jeans, tight white t-shirt - and one FUCKER of ablack eye.

He holds an ice pack to his bruised right hand, and checksthe action on the street: A bus passes by.

takes one long, last, drag from his smoke and enters themarket...

EXT. SHOE SHOP - ENTRANCE5.

LUIS ANDRADE walks up to the front door, unlocks it, andenters. The bells from the top of the door chime. Luisshuts the door and flips the sign to OPEN.

EXT. WAREHOUSE - ENTRANCE6.

GIO ARGENTI, 40's, sharply dressed, out of place in thisgrimy, dirty warehouse, steps up to a heavy sliding door andpounds with his fist.

BANG, BANG, BANG.

Sounds of Footsteps. metal on metal grinding then...

The Heavy Door slides open and reveals FERNANDO ORTIZ (30s)slicked back hair, cigar in his mouth, dressed like a cheapvaquero, complete with tacky oversize Belt Buckle and snakeskin boots.

Fernando nods. Gio steps inside. Fernando checks outside,then slides the heavy door shut. A magic-markered sign onthe door reads: FUCK OFF.

EXT. ANTONIO'S APARTMENT -WINDOW 7.

Curtains are drawn on every single window of this apartmentbuilding except ONE.

Ricardo, stands in the middle of it, looks about, then pulls

EXT. CLINIC - ENTRANCE8.

SOPHIA ANDRADE approaches the front door. TATIANNA, a younghispanic girl (13) sits on the steps. Her lip is split, andher face bruised. Sophia startles her.

SOPHIA(in spanish)

EXT./INT. DINER - FRONT WINDOW 9.

Its busy, customers stuff their faces, the sound of eggsfrying a pot of coffee brews.

A plate eggs and bacon is served to a uniformed policeofficer sitting at the counter reading the sports section ofthe local newspaper.

DETECTIVE DOMINICK CAVELLA struts in like he owns the placeand sits at the counter.

He's in his 40's and looks it - with an expanding waistline,he looks more like a mafia don, than a cop, his .45 caliberhandgun, exactly where it should be.

He sits at the counter, and motions to the WAITRESS.

DOMINICKHey Hon...the usual ...

The waitress drops off a mug and pours coffee into it..

WAITRESS Anything for your Partner?...

DETECTIVE JACOB WEISS also in his late 40s, walks in withcocky confident stride and A RACETRACK PROGRAM in his hand.

He is a mishmash of 1970s throwbacks complete with a fonzistyled leather jacket, elvis side burns and a handlebarmustache.

The door's bells chime.

DUNCAN MCCALLISTER, 35, tall, arrogant, wearing a light greydesigner suit, confidently walks toward the counter. He iscarrying a briefcase and a new pair of expensive shoes.

He stops and places the shoes on the counter.

EXT. SHOE SHOP – SIDEWALK - DAY27.

Sophia, turns the East corner sidewalk at 2nd and Chestnutand walks toward the Diner. She stops in front of the ShoeShop and looks inside.


Mickey tries to stand and, instead, falls out of the tub.His limbs are shaking.

He pauses on the cold ground, looks down at the wounds onhis body, and notices the surgical lines across his abdomen.His fingers trace the lines and his jaw locks.

MICKEY(angry,whispering)

EXT. SHOE SHOP – SIDEWALK - DAY29.

Luis is seen through the open door of his Shoe Shop. He tiltof his head towards the Diner. Sophia nods and continues towalk.


MICKEY gently opens the unlocked freezer from the inside andpeeks into the Fishmarket.

Jake is sitting with the paperin his hands nodding off.

Mickey reaches for the bloody bat leaning against thefreezer.

She is counting money by Janine, 20's, split lip, black eye,wearing half-ripped short shorts, giant heels, and just abra, ball gagged and tied up in a corner.

Fernando gives Carla a kiss on the cheek, the kind a lovingson would give his mother, like a good Spanish boy, andexits.

Luis grabs his coat from the back of the bathroom door, putsit on, and exits the Shoe Shop.

Luis bumps into Jake as he and Dominick exit from the Diner.They exchange “excuse me, sorry” nods.

INT. DINER - DAY38.

Sophia's POV, Luis enters the Diner, bumping into Dominickand Jake as they walk out.

EXT. DINER - SIDEWALK - DAY39.

Behind Luis, seen through the Diner window, is Mickey nowraising the 9mm pistol toward Dominick and Jake , his facecontorted, his hand trembling.

INT. DINER - DAY40.

Luis approaches Sophia sitting at the booth at the back ofthe Diner.

Just as Luis is about to sit down.

Luis flinches, ducks and turns around to face the Diner'sfront window.

Police cars swarm in, Uniformed officers around. OfficerJonesy, Reaches for his radio.."Officers down" Sirens,screech.

AGENTS DAMIAN and ISABELLA, CERMI, BARNS, ERICA SANCHEZ,WATSON rush to secure the scene from the station across thestreet Damian bends down to Jack, puts fingers to hisneck....

Mickey pulls Isabella down to his face by the collar of hershirt with a bloody hand.

Isabella is fearful, but then her expression softens and shefrowns as Mickey whispers into her ear.

He exhales his last breath releases his grip and falls back

to the ground.

Isabella sits up, pauses, then looks behind her in shock.
