Over the years you hear and remember some interesting things. Like the old saying about how old men sit and talk about the weather, and old women sit and talk about old men. Which makes me think about one of my favorite sayings, “if it isn’t broke, don’t ! x it.” This holds true for many things in this world, especially our cattle herd. Good feet, good utters, and good temperament. If any of these qualities aren’t met, the animal doesn’t stay. This goes for our women too. My family works around our cows every day and a quiet temperament is essential. Another saying I like is “If you don’t make the ! rst step, the ! nish line doesn’t get any closer.” Which translates into if you don’t take the ! rst step to improve your herd by purchasing top genetic bulls you won’t be raising those top $1700-1800 calves in the fall. So this is your chance to improve your herd and your bank account.

Expected Progeny Di!erenceExpected Progeny Di$erences (EPDs) are statistics generated for individual cattle through national genetic evaluations.

EPDs:• allow breeders to estimate a young animal’s breeding value - that animal’s value as a parent• allow a fair comparison of breeding value by removing environmental bias such as climate, feed and special management• the best tool available to compare animals between herds, countries and year of birth• help breeders make informed decisions regarding breeding stock selection by evaluating numerous traits such as growth-related traits (BW, WW, YW, Milk), carcass (REA,FAT, %IMF, etc.) and reproductive e%ciency(CE, MCE, SC)• estimate the group performance of one parent compared to the group performance of another parent, assuming similar mates

EPDs evaluate group averages and o!spring’s performance. They can not predict individual performance or weights.

For example. If Bull A (weaning weight EPD of +10) and Bull B (WW of +60) were randomly mated with ten similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A’s o$spring 10 be 50 Ibs lighter than that of Bull B’s (60-10=50).

To evaluate seedstock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual assessment. With EPDs, the concept of “intermediate optimums”works best. Selection for one trait or for extremes generally results in unexpected consequences due to genetic correlations - for example, intense selection for high yearling weight will also increase birth weight. Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and carcass merit while improving pro!tability and e%ciency.

TERMS AND CONDITIONSTERMS: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque. Settlement to be made immediately after completion of the sale, payable at par to Bow Slope Shipping Association. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerk before any cattle will be released.

Bidding: Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. No by-bidding will be permitted.

Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in the dispute. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be !nal.

Announcements: All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to such disclosures.

Certi"cate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the breed association. A certi!cate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.

Health: All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements.

Liabilities: All persons attend the sale at their own risk and the seller and sale manager assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur.

“If in the opinion of the buyer an animal proves to be a nonbreeder, he must notify Bow Slope Shipping Assoc. within two months after the date of the sale. When an animal is proven by a veterinarian to be a non-breeder, the contributor agrees to refund the purchase price in full providing the bull is returned to the contributor in good physical condition, or to supply the purchaser with an animal of approximately equal age, quality and breeding. In either case, the non-breeding animal is to be returned to the contributor, and the purchaser is responsible for all transportation and veterinary charges incurred. The contributor is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies, nor the sickness not apparent at the time of the sale.’
