Fair Trade

Fair trade is an organized social movement that aims to help producers in developing countries to make better trading conditions and promote sustainability. It advocates the payment of a higher price to exporters as well as higher social and environmental standards.

It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries, most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine, fresh fruit, chocolate, flowers, and gold.

Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers – especially in the South.

The banana trade has been crucial to the national economies of the Windward Islands since it was established more than 50 years ago by the former British colonial power to supply the UK market. Bananas have provided a direct living for thousands of small-scale producers, accounting for up to 50% of the Windward Islands’ total export revenue, thereby providing crucial foreign exchange for investment in social and economic development.

Moses was born and raised in the farming community of Grace, at the southern end of St Lucia, where he still lives with his wife Robertina. He produces bananas, pineapples, pepper and root crops. Cornelius Lynch and his wife Eudoxia live in the Mabouya Valley community in the Dennery quarter on the east coast of St Lucia. He grows bananas, watermelon, cucumber, beans and salad plants.

• One in every three bananas sold in the UK is Fairtrade.

• Fairtrade accounts for 10% of all tea sold in the UK.

• There are now more than 320 Fairtrade Towns, 4,000 Fairtrade Churches, 37 Fairtrade Synagogues, 60 Fairtrade Universities across the UK.
