Cat 3508B Diesel Engine. Is a four-stroke design and uses long, effectivepower strokes for more complete fuelcombustion and optimum efficiency. (1)It is designed with large displacementand a low speed rating for long hours ofservice between scheduled overhaulsand lower operating costs.

Torque Rise. Of 30 percent provideshigh lugging force during dozing andacceleration in high rimpull conditions.The torque curve effectively matchesthe transmission shift points toprovide maximum efficiencyand faster cycle times.

Electronic Unit Injection (EUI). Is aproven high-pressure, direct injectionfuel system that electronically monitorsoperator demands and sensor inputs tooptimize engine performance.

ADEM™ II (Advanced Diesel EngineManagement System). Controls the fuelinjector solenoids to start and stop fuelinjection. This system provides automaticaltitude compensation, air filter restrictionindication and will not allow the engineto fire until it has oil pressure, actingas cold start protection and a form ofpre-lube.

Separated Cooling System. Isolatesthe radiator and fan from the enginecompartment providing lower soundlevels, more efficient cooling and asloped hood for increased viewing. (2)

Advanced Modular Cooling System(AMOCS). Improves cooling capabilitiesby using a parallel flow system with16 cores. Serviceability is improvedwith AMOCS as there is no top tank toremove and the radiator guard does nothave to be tilted to remove the cores.

Separate Circuit Aftercooling (SCAC).Dedicates six of the radiator’s cores tothe independent aftercooler circuit. Thisallows the aftercooler circuit to operatecooler, resulting in denser air chargeand improved emissions.

Caterpillar Planetary Power ShiftTransmission. Features perimeter-mounted, large diameter clutch packsthat control inertia for smooth shiftingand increased component life. (3) Theelectronically controlled transmissionenhances productivity, durability andserviceability.

• Top side power train filter removal

Final Drives. Feature planetary reductionat each wheel. Torque is developed atthe wheel, which gives less stress at theaxle shafts. The planetary units can beremoved independently from the brakes.

Impeller Clutch Torque Converter (ICTC).Combined with the Rimpull ControlSystem (RCS) allows the operatormaximum flexibility in modulatingrimpull. (4)

• Improved calibration procedure

• Improved left pedal modulation

• Compensates for wear by providingthe ability to recalibrate for optimumleft pedal modulation regardless oftorque converter wear.

• The impeller clutch torque converteruses the left brake pedal to modulaterimpull from 100 to 20 percent ofavailable rimpull for reduced tireslippage. After 20 percent is achieved,further pedal travel applies the brake.

• The RCS selector dial is used to selectthe desired rimpull setting from fourfactory presets (Maximum, High,Medium and Low). The reducedrimpull is only active in firstgear forward.

• RCS will allow the operator to matchrimpull to ground conditions.

• The torque converter is equippedwith a lockup clutch for direct driveefficiency in second and third gear.

ICTC is standard with lock-up and freewheel stator.

Heavy-Duty Axles. Feature standard axleoil coolers, permanently lubed universaljoints and stronger axle components inboth the differentials and final drives forincreased performance, serviceabilityand durability. (5)

• Free floating axle shafts can beremoved independent of the wheelsand planetaries for quick and easyservicing.

• Axle oil cooling system circulatesoil from the brakes and differentialsthrough an oil-to-air cooler thatprovides increased oil life whileextending component performanceand durability.

• Conventional differential is standard.

Oil Enclosed, Multiple Disc Brakes.Are adjustment-free with fewer partsfor improved serviceability. (6) Fullyhydraulic actuators with independentfront and rear circuits use separateaccumulators and new valves forincreased performance and reliability.

• Brake location improves serviceability.The axle shaft brake design allowsbrake service while leaving the finaldrive intact.

• Axle shaft brakes require less forceby operating on the low torque sideof the axle. Combined with improvedaxle oil circulation for increasedcooling, the oil enclosed, multipledisc brake design improves durability.

Service Brakes. Are four wheel,hydraulic, oil-dipped multiple-discbrakes that are completely enclosed andallow modulated engagement withoutslack adjusters.

Parking Brakes. Are spring applied, oil-released, dry disc that are mountedon the transmission transfer gear outputshaft. Manual override is possible toallow movement of the machine.

Secondary Brakes. Will trigger theelectronic monitoring system to alertthe operator if pressure drops and thenautomatically applies the parking brake.

Castings. In the engine end frame areused in critical high-stress areas to helpspread the load and reduce the number ofparts. The casting for the rear trunnionmount also serves as an engine mount,which provides a load path for the weightand torque of the engine to travel downto the trunnion and then on through to theaxle. Other castings used in the engine-end frame include: front trunnionmounts, steering cylinder brackets,articulation stops and lock link.

Full Box-Section Frame Design. Hasbeen redesigned for increased strength.Internal and external members havebeen added to the rails in criticalsections. (1) The heavy-duty, box-section front frame provides maximumstructural strength to resist twistingloads experienced during dozing. (2)

Upper and Lower Hitch Pins. Pivoton a double-tapered roller bearing. (3)The upper hitch plate thickness has beenincreased and the lower hitch plate hasbeen extended to improve transition tothe rail assembly.

Spread Hitch Design. Helps square upthe frame and provides more clearancefor hydraulic lines. (4) Double taperedroller bearings and hardened pins resistboth horizontal and vertical loads toincrease life. The spread-hitch alsomakes service access easier.

Engine and Transmission Mounts.Are designed to use mushroom and cup-shaped ISO mounts, reducingcomponent vibration and sound levels.The engine mounts directly to therear cross member, simplifying andimproving load transfer structure.

Separate Hydraulic Systems. Featureone system for the brakes and steeringand another for blade control and thehydraulically-driven engine cooling fanwith full flow filtering. (1) The benefitsof the separate hydraulic systems areincreased cooling and elimination ofcross-contamination. XT-3™ and XT-5™ hose and reliable componentshelp reduce the risk of leaks and blownlines, helping protect the environment.Reusable O-ring face seals makeservicing easy.

Blade Control. Floor-mounted controlsadjust lift/lower and tilt/tip bladefunctions. (2)

• Tandem gear pumps provide hydraulicflow for the lift, tilt and tip functions.

• Well-proven pumps, valves andcylinders are common with thoseused on large Caterpillar TrackType Tractors.

• For improved serviceability, allhydraulic pumps are mounted ona single pump drive.

Case Drain Filtration. Is includedthroughout the hydraulic systemto protect against contamination.(3) Easily accessed for serviceability,seven filters protect the hydraulic pumps,fan motor and axle oil cooler circuit.

• Optional high pressure screens areavailable as an upgrade to the casedrain filtration package. This deluxefiltration package places high pressurescreens on the output side ofthe hydraulic pumps, furtherprotecting the hydraulic systemfrom contamination.

Load Sensing Steering. With STICControl System is a revolutionarysystem that integrates steering andtransmission into a single controller.(4) The variable displacement pumpmaximizes machine performance bydirecting power through the steeringsystem only when needed.

• Simple side-to-side motions of theoperator’s left arm turn the machineright or left.

• Transmission shifting forward,neutral or reverse is controlledby the operator’s fingers andgear selection is controlled bythe operator’s thumb.

Cab Design. Is spacious and incorporatesinnovations for operator comfort,maneuverability and productivity.Features include outstanding viewingarea, improved cab ventilation, interiorsound levels below 75 dB(A), standardcoat hook, cup holder, storage bin,intermittent wet-arm wipers, room for alarge lunch cooler and radio readiness.

STIC Control System. Provides a fluidmotion that reduces effort and allowsthe operator to work the machine forlong periods of time with little or nofatigue. (1)

Left Pedal. Operates the impeller clutchtorque converter. (2)

Comfort Series Seat. With air suspensionis designed for comfort and support. (3)The seat cushions reduce pressure onthe lower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.The seat is six-way adjustable and theretractable seat belt remains off thefloor and is easy to reach. Armrestsare height and tilt adjustable.

Throttle Lock. Allows the operator topreset the engine speed for a varietyof applications, resulting in faster cycletimes and increased productivity. (4)

Vital Information Display System (VIDS).Provides information on the 854G’smajor components and systems. (5)In the event a problem occurs, VIDSgives pertinent information that leadsto a more accurate diagnosis and areduction of overall downtime.VIDS configuration supports:

• Gauge displays fuel tank leveland temperature for engine coolant,power train and hydraulic oil. Thetachometer is an analog gauge withdigital readout for gear selection.

• Two languages (English and any oneof 17 others) and a 40-character textdisplay instantly communicatesmachine problems.

• Step-by-step service instructions forcalibrations, option selection andadjustable settings.

Hydraulic Blade Controls. Are floor-mounted and adjust fore and aft sooperators of any size can find acomfortable operating position.(6) The single lever control allowsoperators to control blade functions,while a switch control on top of thecontrol lever allows the choice ofsingle or dual-tilt operation.

Viewing Area. Is large and bonded glassin the front window eliminates distractingmetal frames to provide the best view tothe blade. (7)

Quick Shift. Allows quicker cycletimes by automatically shifting fromfirst forward to second reverse.

Rimpull Control System. Has four factorypreset rimpull settings (low, medium,high and maximum) to better matchground conditions.

Caterpillar Blades. Are designed withhigh strength, pressed rib constructionand large Caterpillar Track Type Tractorbolt-on cutting edges and bottom wearplates that offer excellent dozing androlling characteristics. Capacities andwidths are set to achieve increasedproductivity while dozing heavyloads or spreading cover material.

Coal Blade. Is designed for preciseand productive dozing while helpingto retain load control with increasedcapacity for lighter materials.

• Wing angles help retain the loadwhile dozing.

Semi-U Blade. Combine thecharacteristics of the S and U bladesinto one package.

• Increased capacity with the additionof short wings, which includeonly the dozer end bits, withoutsacrificing spreading characteristicsof straight blades.

Heavy-Duty Semi-U Blade. Utilizes thesame design as the standard Semi-U bladewith the addition of a Hardox 400 linerplate, Hardox material on the side platesand additional gusseting on the bottomof the blade provide increased strengthand durability in high wear applications.
