From the DugoutIsaid in my last set of notes that the

games against Burnham & Bashleywould give me a good idea of where

we were with regards to the personnel inthe squad and any areas that neededstrengthening.Six points out of six didn’t tell the wholestory of the games – there were times inboth where we made hard work of the sit-uations and against better sides we mayhave come unstuck, but ultimately we hadenough quality to get two important winsthat will give the players confidence in thegames to come. The most pleasing thingis that we’ve scored six goals, with themajority of them coming from the for-wards, and could have scored plentymore. In the first few games of my timehere, we were less of an attacking threatand chances were few and far between, but we could have beaten Burnham by 4or 5 goals instead of just the two, and thesame applied to the Bashley game.Today, we face a tough test against an in-form Totton side. They had a difficultstart to the season but recent results ap-pear to indicate that they are a side on theup, so we will have to be at our best to-day. And just to add a little bit extra to thegame Totton are likely to have one of ourrecently transferred players, in defenderIan Oliver lining up against us. “Oli” hasbeen a regular in the Wimborne line upthis season, but has found the travellingincreasingly difficult with his work com-mitments, and being Southampton based, playing for Totton is clearly a better situa-tion for him. We wish him well, but nottoday obviously! The same goes to Franklyn Clarke whoalso left to join Dorchester Town. Frank-

lyn had expressed a wish to play at a high-er level and being a non-contract playerlike Oli, there was little that I could do tostop the move happening. Franklyn seemsto have started life off well at Dorchesterand again we wish him every success. These departures have been an inevitabili-ty of the situation that I’ve encounteredhere at the Cuthbury. I’d love to say thatthere won’t be anymore, but I cannotguarantee this. I will, though, be workinghard to replace any players with the bestthat the current situation allows me to.Whilst on the theme of departures, itwould be remiss of me not to thank JasonHarvell for all he has done as a playerhere at Wimborne following his decisionto stop playing. I hesitate to use the word“retire” , as the door has been left welland truly open, should Jason get his “mo-jo” for football back. Jason has been afantastic servant to Wimborne, and one ofthe best keepers in the area to play at thislevel of football. Hopefully Jason willstill be around Wimborne games as aspectator, so the Wimborne regulars willget plenty of opportunities to thank him inperson for his efforts.Enjoy the game today, and please get be-hind the lads, your support is important tothe players and management, so keep itcoming – the louder the better!

From the Dressing Room

Hi, and a happy New Year to youall. Welcome to this afternoon’sleague game against old adversar-

ies AFC Totton. Our last home game was a classic 6-point-er. Nobody wants to play in such games, but we are where we are. If Burnham hadwon, it would have heaped even morepressure on us. There was enough pressureon us for that game, which everyone keptsaying was a “must win” game. All thelads had that message in their heads. As the game progressed we created andmissed a lot of opportunities, but we keptplugging away. I told the lads that “thecream always comes to the top”, and that’swhat happened in that game.I’ll claim an assist for our first goal mid-way through the first half. Just before thenI’d clipped a through ball for Preso whichhe took on for a shot. I did the same forStokes, but hadn’t allowed for the fact thathe’s not as quick! The ball ran through totheir keeper, but Stokes is great at chasingdown lost causes, and he managed to get ablock in as the keeper tried to clear. Theball rebounded off Stokes and rolled intothe empty net. There’s no doubt that wedeserved that half-time lead. But a one-goal lead is never enough in thisLeague, as both teams will always havechances. We needed a second, but had tobe patient. For all our opportunities itdidn’t come until the 90th minute. Preso isa clever footballer, and he used the condi-tions to great effect with his corner.I’d like to say that I ate and drank as muchas I wanted on Christmas Day. But with agame the day after, you can’t. As a playeryou know you’ve got to look after your-self, so I just took it easy.

After Burnham there was a different pres-sure on us for the Bashley game. Unfortu-nately they haven’t got a league point allseason, and you don’t want to be the firstto concede points to them. But they wereaware of the difficult time we’d beenthrough, including losing Franklyn and Oliin the week leading up to the game, sothey were well up for it.Credit to our boys - they did the job theyhad to do. In truth we had enough chancesto have killed the game off in the first half.Beforehand we asked who was willing totake a pen, and not a lot put a hand up. Socredit to Dan for volunteering in his firstgame for us. He’s been scoring a lot ofgoals at Blackfield & Langley, and wasfull of confidence. The keeper made agood stop from the first pen, taken byDan. But credit to Dan who came backand scored with his next chance. Ryan hadalready given us the lead.Bashley pulled one back in the secondhalf, and it was a bit nervy for 10 minutes. We created lots of chances, and they gaveaway 3 silly penalties. Preso gave thekeeper no chance with his 2 second-halfpens, even though they were into the wind.I mentioned Franklyn and Oli earlier. Wewish them, and the other lads who’ve left, all the best. The squad has changed a lotover the past couple of months, andthere’s only a handful of Cussy’s lads left.Although it’s been a tough time, it’s pro-vided opportunities for other lads.Today is another massive game for us.With your usual great support behind uswe’ll be looking to start the new year witha good result. Enjoy the game.Scott Arnold

Wimborne Town 2 Burnham 0 - 19 Dec 2015 - Ken Fergus reports

Magpie boss Simon Browne chalked uphis first three points with this vital winover Burnham which eased Wimborneclear of the relegation zone.In a game where Burnham had lots of pos-session without ever threatening ShaneMurphy's goal, it took until a Carl Prestoncorner sneaked in at the near post in sec-ond half added time for Wimborne to feelcomfortable. But the Magpies could haveput the game to bed long before that giventhe chances they had. With Jamie Davidson again missing fromthe lineup, Simon Browne recalled LouisKellaway to the midfield and he, JamesStokoe & Franklyn Clarke were the Wim-borne stars. Jordan Tewkesbury, a newgoalkeeping signing, started on the bench. The Magpies could have taken the lead inthe first minute when James Stokoe playedAnt Waters in but the youngster's wellstruck shot hit the Burnham post. AndStokes took a knock which needed JohnEdwards' healing hands.Carl Preston was put clean through on 17minutes but his shot was blocked and afollow-up strike from James Stokoe sailedover the bar. Two minutes later a Burn-ham player shot wide from distance andthen Wimborne took the lead through afreak goal. A through ball to James Stokoefrom Scott Arnold was slightly overhit butwhen Samuel Gray in the Burnham goalcame out, his clearance hit James' boot andwent back past him into the net.And it could have been two a minute laterwhen Carl Preston was put through butGray made an excellent save down to hisright. Billy Maybury hit a fierce shot justwide on the half hour mark but for the restof the half Burnham had more than theirfair share of possession without ever trou-

bling Shane Murphy. A shot from JonBlake went just wide of Burnham's righthand post after 39 minutes but the halfended with Wimborne ahead.A misplaced back header let Carl Prestonin on goal after an hour only for the excel-lent Gray to smother his attempt on goal. Then Wimborne were awarded two free-kicks within a minute, both about 25 yardsout on the left. From the first, Billy May-bury's shot was easily saved and, from thesecond, Franklyn's effort curled just overthe bar with the keeper beaten.James Stokoe was replaced by MorganTurner on 69 minutes, James clearly suf-fering from the challenge he received inthe first minute. With 7 minutes left,Wimborne almost doubled their lead. Acorner was won on the left after good workfrom Morgan Turner. It was met by IanOliver after a clever move and then de-flected close in by Jon Blake only for Grayto make another fine save.Ryan Murray replaced Ant Waters on 85minutes and then the second goal eventual-ly arrived in the second minute of addedtime when a corner from Carl Preston onthe right was allowed to creep in at thenear post despite the close attentions ofBurnham skipper James Walters.Ryan Johnson replaced Billy Maybury butwhen the referee blew his whistle it sig-nalled an excellent three points - and aclean sheet - for the Magpies.Wimborne had many chances but their on-ly goals both came out of nothing. On theother hand, Burnham had lots of posses-sion but never looked capable of hurtingthe Wimborne defence. Man of thematch? Undoubtedly Samuel Gray in theBurnham goal.

Wimborne climbed to eight pointsclear of the relegation zone with a 4-1win over bottom team Bashley. Goalsby Ryan Murray and new signing DanMunday gave the Magpies a two goalhalf time lead. Mid-way through thesecond half Luke Ridgley pulled a goalback to give some hope for the homeside, but two late penalties by CarlPreston sealed the victory for Wim-borne.Simon Browne was able to introducetwo new signings, with Dan Mundaycoming into the starting line-up andBen Goodge on the bench.Wimborne made a promising start andafter 12 minutes Carl Preston wentclose with a shot over the bar. Twominutes later he turned provider with alow cross that Ryan Murray convertedto give Wimborne the lead.On 18 minutes Wimborne had thechance to extend their lead when theywere awarded a penalty for a pullback, but new signing Dan Mundaymissed the opportunity to open hisWimborne account, keeper Joe Prodo-mo making a good save low to hisright.

But after several promising moves bythe Magpies, Munday did get on thescoresheet to give Wimborne a twogoal half time lead.Wimborne started the second halflooking to extend their lead. JamesStokoe had a double effort twice savedby the keeper, and Carl Preston had across deflected onto the post by a de-fender.But the next goal came at the other endwhen, after 66 minutes, Shane Murphycouldn't hang on to the ball and JoePidgley took advantage to tap it intothe net. These were now nervous times forWimborne, but the pressure was re-lieved on 82 minutes when Carl Pres-ton netted from the penalty spot after ahandball in the area. And six minuteslater another handball decision allowedPreston to make the game safe with hissecond penalty. This wasn't exactly an impressive winagainst a team anchored at the bottom ofthe league, and Wimborne again showedthey have a problem converting chancesinto goals. But in the end what matters isthe three points that move Wimborne fur-ther from the relegation zone.

Today’s ProgrammeThose of you who purchased today’s programme, and thank you for doing so, will havenoticed that the price was increased from £1 to £1.50, which it was last season. The reason for this is that, because of the Christmas and New Year holiday period,we’ve had to have it printed externally to the Club. You should notice an improvementin the quality of the paper and printing. We’d appreciate your feedback on whether you’d be willing to pay an extra 50p for thebetter quality printing. Please let Steve Harvey or Programme Editor Graham Dunn know your thoughts.

AFC Totton 2 Winchester C 0 - 26 Dec 2015 - N-LP reportTotton put in a tremendous display againstpromotion chasing Winchester City. They just about edged the first 45 minutes, but it was City who had the best opportuni-ty when former Totton player Adam To-masso shot just wide.Tooton dominated the second half, and de-servedly broke the deadlock after 56 min-utes when the impressive Nick Watts

whipped in a low cross that Nathaniel Sher-borne finished from 8 yards out.The Stags added their second when MikeGosney intercepted the ball in midfield be-fore putting Sherborne through on goal. The striker made no mistake as he slid theball past the advancing City goalkeeper,Brendon Norris.Star man: Nathaniel Sherborne (Totton)

Totton Football Club was formed in 1886 and became a founder member of the Hamp-shire F.A., and was a founder members of the New Forest League in 1904. After the1914/18 War they entered the Southampton Senior League and the New Forest League, and in 1920/21 joined the Hampshire League West. The early matches were played atSouth Testwood Park before Totton moved to Testwood Park in December 1933.

In 1975 they amalgamated with Totton Athletic, installed floodlights and opened a ClubRoom and Bar at the ground. Totton became a founder member of the Wessex League in1986/87 season. The Medisport Wessex League Cup was won in 1989/90.

2006/07 proved to be the most memorable in the history of the Club. In the League thefirst Team had a season-long battle with Gosport, missing out on the title by one goal.but the highlight of the season was the Final of the FA Carlsberg Vase at the new Wem-bley Stadium. In front of a record 36,232 crowd for a Vase Final Truro City won 3-1.

In the next season the team won our first ever Wessex League Championship, and pro-motion to the BGB Southern League. After a table topping start to the season we eventu-ally finished 3rd in the league and, after beating Beaconsfield SYCOB in the play offsemi-final, we lost in the final against Didcot Town after extra time.

2009/10 had seen AFC Totton lift the Hampshire Senior Cup for the first time in theClub’s history. 2010/11 was one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history, picking up not only the Hampshire Senior Cup for the second time but also retaining itfrom the 2009/10 season beating Sholing 3-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium. But this waseclipsed by the club being crowned Champions of the Southern League South and WestDivision, just pipping Sholing to the title by 2 points in a nail-biting finish to the season.

The highlight of the 2011/12 season was reaching the 2nd round proper of the FA Cup.The match, televised live on ITV, was against Bristol Rovers who came out on top inconvincing style. That season Stefan Brown scored the fastest FA Cup hat-trick by a sub-stitute, scoring all 3 goals in 15 second half minutes. The Club narrowly missed promotion to the Conference South, but lost 4-2 at OxfordCity in the play off final after only one season at Southern Premier League level.

The 2013/14 season saw the Stags undergo major changes, caused by previous mis-management of the Club. Forced to field mainly inexperienced youngsters in the toughsurroundings of the Southern Premier League, relegation was half expected, although asthe players matured, performances improved, and the dreaded drop nearly avoided.

The Club has been stabilised financially by the current Executive Committee, under theleadership of new Chairman Andy Straker, whose previous enthusiasm as a staunch sup-porter has now carried over into his new role. The club can now look forward whereasuntil recently there was a very real danger that it could disappear off the football map.

GAME ON! Those are the two words eve-ry football fan across the land is just des-perate to hear during the festive season.Stick your Merry Christmas and your Hap-py New Year (ok, that’s three…), any ex-cuse to get away from the leftover turkey, same old re-run movies and selection box-es is desperately welcomed.Of course, the weather, like usual, didn’twant to play ball. Storm Barney, Desmondor whatever ludicrous name the latest oneis given, have wreaked havoc, especiallyin the north.Clubs from Steps 1-7 who have been af-fected are urged to contact their localCounty FAs to see if they can get a cut ofa £750,000 emergency fund recently set upby the FA, Football Foundation and SportEngland. Northern Alliance side CarlisleCity saw their Gillford Park home sub-merged and long-term damage may havebeen done to the playing surface.“Our pitch was flooded to a large degreealthough not as deep as the Carlisle Unitedground,” said City chairman Brian Hall.“Thankfully we suffered no structuraldamage as far as we are aware, althoughwe will need to check our floodlights.“The water on the pitch for so long is aconcern and this is where we may needfunding to assess the damage and put itright. It is evident that one part of ourpitch now has a dip in it from the weightof the water. The FA fund is obviouslywelcome and hopefully it will assist thosein most need.”The FA gets a lot of criticism thrown theirway regarding grass-roots football, mostof it rightly so, but they must be congratu-lated on setting that up, and so quickly too.The mass of postponed games - especiallyin the Football League where they ofcourse get more attention - will again

bring up the question of a winter break. It’s done in most countries on the conti-nent and we’re often told that the Englandnational team constantly fail at major tour-naments because they ‘play too manygames’ and ‘they don’t get enough rest’.Even if that were true (rather than the realreason that the players aren’t quite goodenough), the UK’s fascination for festivefootball is there for all to see. You onlyhave to look at some of the crowds fromBoxing Day and Bank Holiday Mondayfor that to be abundantly clear. In what other country around the worldwould you get 4,381 turning up a game atlevel nine of the league structure? That’smore than some top division clubs getacross Europe. That’s exactly how manysupporters were at Edgar Street on BoxingDay for the Midland League Premier gamebetween Hereford and Westfields - unsur-prisingly a league record.Around 2,000 were expected at SouthShields’ match against Hebburn Town atStep 6 before the weather intervened.Salisbury welcomed 1,485 to the Ray Macfor the Bank Holiday Monday fixture withBemerton Heath Harlequins while over1,500 watched Hythe Town overcomeFolkestone Invicta in the Ryman South.Weymouth and Dorchester attracted 1,808in the Southern Premier and a hundred lesswent to Dulwich Hamlet v Kingstonian inthe Ryman Premier. Both Blyth v Darling-ton 1883 and Stourbridge v Halesowen inthe Evo-Stik NPL saw over 1,800 throughthe gates. That’s even before you look atSteps 1 and 2!The appetite is clearly there so touchingsuch a widely loved British traditionwould be sacrilege. All we need now issome help from the elements!

CHRISTER Warren couldn't praise his players enough after they did everything heasked against much-fancied AFC Totton - except score.Warren thought his side "absolutely battered" the opposition in Saturday's game, onlyfor Totton to steal the points with virtually their only effort on target.Wimborne rattled the woodwork on numerous occasions before their day was summedup when player-manager Warren missed a late penalty."I couldn't have asked more from the lads. We were superb from start to finish," Warrentold the Daily Echo. "To have as many chances as we did - we must have hit the wood-work three or four times - I just thought it was one of those days, it just wouldn't go in.""If we show that commitment and desire we won't be too far away. I was proud of eve-ry single one of them. I personally think it was our best performance of the season barthe finishing side of it. We did a tally and we had 30 shots at their goal, so we must bedoing something right. We've scored a lot of goals and put chances away (this season)but you'll get days like that when you don't get what you deserve."Despite dominating them, Warren thinks Totton will be right up there at the businessend of things come the end of the season. He said: "They're a really good team. That's the pleasing thing, we've battered them andcaused them a lot of problems. For them to not play well and come away with threepoints is pleasing for them. They're not firing on all cylinders yet."Wimborne: Hutchings, Percival, Thomas, Roast, Masters, McCormick, James, Warren,Whitcher (Vavrecka 60), Joyce (Mulhern 83), Bailey-Pearce (Moore 74).Christer was right - Totton went on to win the Wessex League, and gain promotion tothe Southern League - Ed.

From the Archives - Daily EchoGeoff Maxted’s Father passed away a few months ago. Geoff thought we’d be interestedin an old article in the local paper about his Dad winning a Mini in a draw run by WT-FC. Here’s a copy of the article:

“CHAMPAGNE ALL THE WAY FOR DEREKIt’s a fair bet that factory machinist Derek Maxted will be drinking champagne this week- and driving in it as well! For Mr.Maxted, of St.Mary’s Road, Poole, has just taken delivery of a champagne col-oured Mini City car - his prize in a draw run by Wimborne Town Football Club.Mr.Maxted, who makes aircraft parts for Moore’s Engineering at Wallisdown, boughthis winning ticket from a friend at work for 50p.“I’ve never won anything like this before in my life - it was a great surprise,” he saidafter receiving the keys to the £3,000 car from the football club’s chairman, Mr.JohnSmith.Now Mr.Maxted finds himself at the head of a four-car family - for he already has aDatsun and his two children are also car owners.Echophoto shows Mr.Smith (right) handing over the keys to Mr.Maxted.”Geoff - thanks for letting us use the photo and article. Many of our readers will recog-nise John Smith. The car had a W-suffix number plate, dating this to about 1980.
