Topics Covered• Inertia

– Moving things stay moving, stationary things stay stationary

• All objects moved by gravity accelerate the same

• Rotating objects act funny

• The idea of conservation

Demos1. Pull tablecloth out from under dishes (inertia)

2. Skateboards on inclined plane• Same mass, same angle• Different mass, same angle• Same mass, different angle

3. Drop bowling ball and low mass ball

4. Newtonian demonstrator

Demos5. Bicycle wheel

• Sword fight• Hang from rope

6. Turntable• 2 lb weights• Bicycle wheel

7. Water in bucket

Newtonian Demonstrator: Assembly #1

• Raise first “A-Frame” vertically.

• Small crosspiece in interior.

Newtonian Demonstrator: Assembly #2

• Insert top piece in slots.

• Make sure “dot pattern” is same on A-frame and top piece

• Small crosspiece in interior.

Newtonian Demonstrator: Assembly #3

• Make sure small crosspiece is horizontal.

• Push top piece down to touch crosspiece.

• Attach major crosspiece using wing nut.

Newtonian Demonstrator: Assembly #4

• Attach load bearing arms by aligning hinges. Make sure to use the numbers to use the right ones.

• Insert clips into hinges.

Newtonian Demonstrator: Assembly #5

• Attach cables with turnbuckles between top and crosspiece. Tighten.

• Hang bowling balls from hooks.

• Enjoy!

Ramps: Assembly #1

• Take two support pieces and connect crosspieces via clips.

• Note that hinge connections are somewhat fragile.

Ramps: Assembly #2

• Attach ramps to desired crosspiece.

• Note that the structure is slightly wobbly, but not too bad.
