This week’s Twilight on the Pier concertsare sure to leave an impression with

Grammy-nominated electronica bandBrazilian Girls lighting up the main stage, with dance club favorites and a perform-ance by groundbreaking visual artist andfrontwoman Sabina Sciubba. The actresswill likely be unrecognizable from her recur-ring role on the FX series Baskets, as sheassumes her mysterious stage persona. Withsongs wafting from lounge to pop, thegroup’s 2008 album New York City wasnominated for a Grammy in the Best DanceRecording category.

Earlier in the evening, audiences won’twant to miss self-taught violinist SudanArchives, with hip-hop beats and experimen-tal jams inspired by Sudanese fiddlers. Theglobal mix may sound unusual, but trust us,it works. The 23-year-old musician is turningheads and collecting YouTube clicks with herethereal vocals on head-bopping songs likeCome Meh Way, which has more than 1.1million listens on YouTube.

Nearby, Los Angeles-based “folktronic”group yOya will combine classic folk lyricswith contemporary electronic beats on thePacific Park Stage. The band just spent their

summer touring the Pacific Northwest andmidwest before returning to Los Angeles forTwilight on the Pier. Dance music actCapycac will round out performances at theWest End Stage.

Picked to go with the lineup, are twoSmorgasburg food vendors that are as eclec-tic as the music. A paratha taco is, “the but-tery, flakey lovechild of the tortilla and crois-sant” according to the chefs at Goa Taco(Aussie slang for go for a taco).

The second option, Cheezus, never disap-points with grilled cheese sandwiches stuffedwith your pick of cheeses, from fontina, comte, cheddar, manchego and more. As always, theSmorgasburg record vendor will have a curat-ed collection by Beat Swap Meet.

Music fans who leave wanting more cancheck out a book on the Pier to take homegreat reads by indie musicians like CarrieBrownstein, Hunger Makes Me A ModernGirl: A Memoir and Florence Welch, UselessMagic: Lyrics and Poetry.

“Indie” music has expanded way beyondthe singer songwriter with the guitar- AtTwilight you’ll see Indie darlings BrazillianGirls perform their classics and new work,Sudan Archives will blow folks away withher powerful violin and hints of her NorthAfrican influence, CAPYAC are making awhole genre of their own with their jazzmeets dance music vibes, and yOya’srefreshing and heartfelt tunes will melt awayeven the most stubborn cynic,” said PierCorporation director Negin Singh. "Theseartists are redefining what American musiclooks and sound a like today, and I can’twait to watch it all unfold!"

BRAZILIAN GIRLS

Brazilian Girls return in 2018 with Let’sMake Love, their first album since the 2008Grammy-nominated New York City. Formedin 2003, the group—Sabina Sciubba (leadvocals, electronics), Jesse Murphy (bass, vocals), Didi Gutman (keyboards, vocals),Aaron Johnston (drums, percussion, vocals)—was born after the four memberscrossed paths at East Village club Nublu.“Somehow we all ended up at Nublu on aSunday, and Ilhan (Ersahin, the club’sfounder) suggested we play together,” saysJohnston. The band began playing Nubluweekly, embracing a free-form ethos thathelped shape their kaleidoscopic sound. “Alot of the spirit of the band comes from

being so open to improvise like that,” saysMurphy. Fast earning attention for theireuphoric live show—and winning fans likeZach Galifianakis, who later cast Sciubbaas a regular on Baskets—Brazilian Girlsreleased their self-titled debut in 2005 andsophomore album Talk to La Bomb in 2006.

Produced by longtime Brazilian Girls col-laborator Frederik Rubens, Let’s Make Lovecame to life over the course of severalyears. Since they’re now scattered through-out the U.S. and Europe, the four bandmembers assembled when possible to writeand record, piggybacking those sessionsonto gigs in Istanbul and Madrid and Parisand New York. Despite the distance,Brazilian Girls consistently found their chem-istry as kinetic as when they first started out.“It’s a little astounding to us because we’llgo so long without playing, and then weget together and things just happen in thisvery harmonious way,” says Sciubba.

Brazilian Girls bring a woozy romanti-cism to many tracks on Let’s Make Love.Opening the album with lead single“Pirates,” Sciubba notes of the modern-agenew wave love song, “It’s a song abouthow we should all sleep more and sleep

more together. It would change everything.Actually that's what the whole record isabout. It may even be the true meaning oflife." The album gets its title from a glori-ous anthem at the heart of the album. Likemuch of their latest record, the frenetic yetethereal “Let’s Make Love” takes a moreclassically arranged form than the band’searlier work. At the same time, both albumand title track embody the quintessentialspirit of Brazilian Girls: their strange bal-ance of wildness and elegance, cheekyhumor and fractured poetry, soulful mys-tique and libertine wisdom. “Right now‘Let’s Make Love’ seems like a very goodmessage to put into the world,” saysSciubba of the song’s inspiration. “It’s noteven ‘Make love, not war’—it’s just ‘Makelove,’ and nothing else.”

SUDAN ARCHIVES

Violinist and vocalist, Sudan Archiveswrites, plays, and produces her ownmusic. Drawing inspiration from Sudanesefiddlers, she is self-taught on the violin, and her unique songs also fold in elementsof R&B, and experimental electronic music.

Sudan Archives grew up in Cincinnati,Ohio, where she "messed around with instru-ments in the house" and took up violin in thefourth grade, eventually teaching herself howto play the instrument by ear. When she dis-covered the violin playing style of NortheastAfrica, her eyes opened to the possibilities ofthe instrument. "The way they played it wasdifferent from classical music. I resonated withthe style, and I was like, 'Maybe I can usethis style with electronic music,'" she says.

This fusing of folk music and electronicproduction was the turning point for Sudan."I started mixing my violin into beats,” shesays, “It wasn't complicated — I'd just singstraight into the iPad." She honed her at-home style after moving to Los Angeles aged19 to study music technology, and after achance encounter at a Low End Theory partywith Stones Throw A&R and Leaving Recordsowner Matthewdavid, she signed with StonesThrow. At the very start of her musical career, she's already won plaudits from the likes ofthe New York Times and Pitchfork, andplayed live at experimental festival Moogfest.

Her EP Sudan Archives is an extraordi-nary debut statement from a singular artist.Over six tracks, Sudan Archives layers har-monies, violin figures and ethereal vocals, grounding them all with the hip-hop beats.

In a world where all dogs are gooddogs, only one dog can be the best at beinga great dog. Coming soon to a theater nearyou. #hollywood

That’s an idea we had for a movie.Universal wasn’t into it. They said dogmovies “ran their course” a decade ago.

Whatever, Universal. The next year, they stole our idea and

released The Secret Life of Pets, which made$875 million at the box office.

We tried to sue, but our lawyer was abaked potato and we didn’t even make itinto a courtroom. Even Judge Judy said wedidn’t have a case.

Since then, we’ve just been makingmusic. Kind of boring, really, considering wehad an $800 million movie idea in our backpocket from the beginning. But life isn’talways fair. Rarely is, in fact.

Anyway, the music thing turned out to bepretty fun.

Imagine chopsticks so big they could dou-ble as walking sticks, a noodle as long as

a lasso and a bowl the size of your bathtub, and you get a pretty good picture of IdealMeal, a goofy, interactive game that puz-zled concertgoers two weeks ago at Twilighton the Pier. Using the chopsticks to get agiant shrimp into a bowl became the settingfor some serious, physical comedy, asfriends and family members competed tocomplete the recipe for ramen.

“It’s hilarious and it makes for a greatpicture,” said Indiecade CEO StephanieBarish. Ideal Meal is one of several gamesIndiecade is bringing to the iconic concertseries as the biggest independent game festi-val in the world gears up for its first year inSanta Monica Oct. 12-13.

Barish said independent game develop-ers love to push the envelope when it comesto interactive games, and this week is noexception as concert goers get a crack atKlaxo Radio Hour alongside the EclecticIndie line-up. The award-winning gameallows players to solve a mystery by switch-ing between channels on old-timey radio.

“People invent all these crazy ways tointerface with games,” Barish said. Oct. 7,concert goers will get to play a game calledIndie Mad-Dev, a spin off traditional madlibs that brings the iconic books to life.

The Indiecade CEO hopes concertgoers who like what they play on the Pierwill decide to attend the international festi-val to experience more cutting edge gameson a variety of platforms - from tabletop totag to television screens. Immersive theatergames and escape rooms continue to beon trend for 2018. Those who want toattempt the latest independent games usingaugmented reality and virtual reality willget a chance to try games you can’t playanywhere else. The developers will be onsite to meet players and explain their con-cepts and inspiration.

Now known as the “Sundance of gam-ing,” the Indiecade games launched inBellevue, Washington in 2009, then movedto Culver City. Last year, the festival movedto Little Tokyo, in its quest for a new loca-tion. Barish said she hopes 2018 will markthe first of several years in Santa Monica, asthe festival gets ready to take over the brandnew Center for Media and Design at SantaMonica College next month.

Barish said the new location combinedwith the partnership with Twilight on the Pierproves the festival has met its perfect match.

“There’s such a love of culture and art inSanta Monica,” Barish said. “It’s a wonder-ful synergy of what’s happening in santamonica already.”
