IntroductIon
The joy of travelling always brings with it the need to plan and
choose, because seldom do all the places you’d like to see fit in
to a travel itinerary This can be quite a confounding task when it
comes to the Moravian-Silesian Region, as its list of attractions is
long thanks to its bountiful history For example, if you like the at-
mosphere of old noble residences, you can choose from amongst
dozens of castles and chateaux – from the ostentatious red and
white chateaux in Hradec nad Moravicí to the rather mysterious
castle Hulkvaldy or the uniquely fortified Sovinec
Just as wide of an offering is found in city and village archi-
tecture Fantastic places await you like the monument reserve
in Nový Jičín with townhouses around the square Masarykovo
náměstí, Štramberk with its remarkable Tube and Heřmanovice
featuring a distinctive group of folk structures Wooden struc-
tures of many types dot the entire region: in Havířov there’s the
preserved and remarkable Kotul’s Log Cabin, and some of the
spa buildings in Karlova Studánka are also timbered The loveli-
est examples of “wooden architecture” here are the myriad typi-
cal churches found primarily in the Beskydy Mountains and their
foothills
The Ostrava area with its industrial heritage is also known for
its important technical monuments, including the Michal Mine,
the ODK Museum and the Lower Area of Vítkovice When visiting
Kopřivnice, make sure you tour the Tatra Museum Enjoy an un-
forgettable ride along the Osoblaha narrow gauge railway And
don’t miss the military fortification complexes in Darkovičky and
Milostovice, testimonies to the difficult times prior to WWII You
will see that the region’s tourism treasure chest is rich in themes
and is nearly inexhaustible

debris from 1920 to 1960 Its top reaches 315 above sea level, mak-
ing it one of the city’s highest points Terezie-Ema is easily accessible
along the yellow-marked hiking route leading from Ostrava’s cent-

Several villages and entire towns disappeared due to black coal
mining The former city of Karviná saw changes in its periphery,
where today there are just modest reminders of its former wealth
One unique structure here is the Baroque Church of St Peter of Al-
cantara Built in 1759, undermining later caused it to sink by over 37
meters beneath its original level and it has tilted 6 8 degrees to the
south Individual walls have different angles of crookedness This has
led to this rare structure earning the nickname “Czech Pisa”
