The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has embarked on a Capital Building fund campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to raise funds to finish the construction of a permanent home for the Chamber. This fund was started

many years ago by some of the founding members. Their contributions made it possible to purchase the building and do the initial work. The Chamber of Commerce and its Board are determined to se-cure the additional funds to continue their vision. This building, when completed, will allow us as a Chamber to continue to serve the business com-munity and promote tourism through our welcome center for Tooele County. The Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization, not a government body with taxing authority. The Chamber functions from the dues of its members and fund raising events. Funds raised by the Chamber have been rolled back into pro-motional venues for businesses such as the “Busi-ness Expo – Taste of Tooele,” “Come Together

The Stansbury Art and Literary Society was recently formed by Pat Jessie, former award win-ning fine arts photographer, and Marianne Rutishauser, an ac-complished watercolor painter. The idea for this came about after it was realized how few venues there were in the area where they could display their art work. The lack of venues for all the tal-ented people living in Tooele County was the impetus to form this organization. Whether one is an amateur or professional in the arts, there is a need to reinvig-orate the creative process. One of the ways to do this is by feedback from others when works of art are displayed. Another is through an organization where people inter-ested in art can gather with these talented people to promote ideas to get the community interested in non-profit cultural events.

For artists to grow, no matter the medium, there is a need to belong to an artistic community. Our aim is to bring the arts into this community then reach out to the larger community. This will bring people together through the arts which, in turn, can revive and enrich community life. It would also encourage the formation of a Tooele County Art Council as an umbrella organization over the nonprofit cultural organizations. This would provide another ave-nue to seek funding from outside sources for arts, music, drama, prose and poetry. It would be most beneficial for all local orga-nizations that fall within these categories. For further information or to be-come a member, call Pat Jessie at 882-0593 or Marianne Rut-ishauser at 882-1485. All are wel-come. Art nurture the soul and this organization can provide the creative opportunities to bring arts into the community.

Utah tops Forbes list of Best States for Business and Careers

SALT LAKE CITY- (October 14, 2010) The same publication that predicted Utah would lead the nation out of the Great Recession has placed our state atop the list of Ò The Best States for Business Careers.Ó  Forbes sites UtahÕ s growing economy (expanding 3.5 % annually over the past five years), job growth (up 1.5% over the past five years), low corporate taxes (decreased from 7% to 5% in 2008), low energy costs and a highly educated workforce as reasons for the coveted top ranking.  Ò This is a true chamber of commerce kind of day,Ó said Lane Beattie, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber, UtahÕ s largest and longest-standing statewide business association. Ò We are the best in the country because of our well-educated workforce and because we have cultivated a business friendly environment.Ó  After finishing in the top five each of the past four years, Utah ousts Virginia from the top spot it has held over the same period. The rankings take into account economic data over a five-year period.  Ò This ranking doesnÕ t just show that weÕ ve weathered the storm better than the rest of the nation,Ó said Beattie. Ò It shows that we have been good for a long time and that is very attractive to businesses looking at our state and for businesses that are already here.Ó  UtahÕ s high ranking plays an important role in the ongoing economic development of the state. Over the past year many businesses have chosen to expand in or relocate to Utah.  Ò Just like a good college football coach uses bowl victories and exposure to recruit better players, we use these ranking to recruit businesses that economically strengthen our state,Ó said Beattie.  The Forbes ranking also helps locally owned businesses understand how UtahÕ s situation is better than the rest of the nation.  Ò This tells our local businesses that Utah is on the right path,Ó said Beattie. County Commission Update: Seeking Solutions to the RMP Project

Tooele County Chamber of Commerce November 20109

Our efforts to oppose a small section of Rocky Mountain Power’s transmission line project in Tooele County have resulted in some positive headway. We’d like to bring you up to date on this far-reaching issue.First of all, everyone knows we use and need electric power in Tooele Coun-ty. Long gone are the days when electricity was a convenience; it’s now an expected basic need in society. As Tooele County’s Commissioners, we don’t ob-ject to additional electrical in-frastructure being built in the county. We benefit from elec-trical power. We want and need new economic development and that requires more electricity. However, we have been and remain opposed to the South Bench route of Rocky Moun-tain Power’s (RMP) proposed transmission line route through Tooele County. It’s important to note that the South Bench route is only a small percentage of the total RMP project. After all other attempts at talks and ne-gotiations with RMP have failed we have been forced to take legal action. We have appealed the State Facility Review Board’s decision which ordered the county to issue a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to RMP. That appeal is still pending before the Utah Court of Appeals. The day before the county would have been required to issue the CUP to RMP, in compliance with the Facility Review Board order, Tooele City sued Tooele County in Third District Court, seeking injunc-tive relief. Rather than being a hostile ac-tion, the injunction was intended to prohibit the county from issuing the CUP. We are pleased that the District Court recognized the importance of the issues raised by Tooele City and Tooele County by granting the re-quested injunction. Tooele City’s lawsuit highlights the gap be-tween the CUP process and the Facility Re-view process. That is one of the many issues we are raising with our appeal. Most recently the Third District Court denied RMP’s mo-tion to dismiss Tooele City’s lawsuit against Tooele County.

We remain optimistic that a settlement can be reached with RMP that would address our concerns with the South Bench route. A huge cooperative effort exists between all af-fected local governments, specifically Tooele County, Tooele City and Grantsville City,

and concerned citizens groups from both cit-ies with the common goal of changing RMP’s proposed route along the South Bench. These groups are not just complaining for the sake of complaining. They have valid con-cerns and have offered legitimate suggestions that RMP summarily rejected. As a Com-mission we have spent countless hours con-sidering and drafting alternate routes, all of which were rejected by RMP. Numerous negative impacts have been identified. We want to emphasize that we believe the proposed South Bench route of the RMP project is detrimental to public health, to the water shed, and to the view shed. As the Third District Court Judge found in issuing the restraining order prohibiting our issu-ing the CUP, the Fa-cility Review Board failed to consider

the environmental issues and other impacts along the proposed route. Everyone needs to remember that it is RMP that has insisted on moving forward with the South Bench route. RMP is the ap-plicant for the CUP and it is incumbent upon

RMP to revise its application. As commissioners we have been involved with this issue from the beginning. We have partici-pated in numerous discussions about this project and have at-tended the public meetings and Planning and Zoning meetings when this project was consid-ered. What you may not know is that not only have we had discussions with RMP officials, but we have had a special meet-ing with the President of RMP. We have also met with the state director of the Bureau of Land Management (the agency re-sponsible for the Environmen-

tal Impact Statement regarding the RMP project). We have pursued efforts on all levels, which have been necessary and effective in bringing the issue to its current situation. We will con-tinue to work on this issue on all fronts. We strongly believe that a solution can be found that will satisfy all parties.

What is all this construction along Main Street?10

The construction activity is asso-ciated with the laying of under-ground fiber optic communica-tions cables by a local company called Beehive Broadband.Who is Beehive Broadband? Beehive Broadband is a new brand for Wireless Beehive and its sister company Beehive Tele-phone Company. In short it re-flects our vision of providing a “fiber to the home” or business broadband connection to each subscriber. Beehive Broadband is the fiber optic division of Wire-less Beehive. What is Broadband? Broadband is a catch-all term being used to describe any type of high speed data or internet connection. One of our companies, Wireless Bee-hive, delivers broadband over a high speed wireless connection. DSL and cable modems are also considered Broadband. Our fiber division Beehive Broadband de-livers broadband over fiber optic cables. What is fiber? Fiber optic cables are made of ultra pure glass. A strand of fiber is about the same size as a strand of hair. It is sur-prisingly flexible but will snap if bent too sharply. These strands serve as literal pipes for photons or “packets of light” which can convey information. Why fiber? If we could compare a connection to the internet to a water system, a dial up mo-dem would be a garden hose. A DSL or cable modem connection would be a fire hose. A fiber connection could transport the entire Colorado River with room to spare. Physicists have not yet discovered the upper limit of ca-pacity for a fiber optic cable.Who needs fiber? Our lowest speed plan we sell on our busi-ness system is 20 Mbps. That is more than our whole company used just a few years ago. There are many things driving the need for speed. The medical profes-sion is transporting an ever in-

creasing amount of medical im-agery over broadband connec-tions. Businesses are using more security cameras that use the internet than ever before. Many business owners now have the ability to look at all their cameras from anywhere. We have seen the rise and fall of video rental stores. One popular company,

Netflix, is moving entirely toward sending movies over the inter-net. In order to view a Netflix movie without interruption and at HD quality, one needs a fairly high speed connection to the in-ternet. As time goes on demand increases. We are surfing the leading edge of that demand. Why Beehive Broadband? Not all fiber optic broadband systems are equal. Most have fiber op-tic cables only along main trunk areas but the connection to the home or business is via copper telephone lines or coaxial cable TV lines. Beehive Broadband takes the fiber clear to the home or business using underground cables. That makes us unique among service providers and re-moves any upper limit on speed. As a matter of fact, our fiber to the home and business systems start with speeds other systems top out at. The native speed of the connection to a home or business is 2.4 Gbps. That is throttled down to the speed the customer actually pur-chases. If someone needs more than 2.4 Gbps, we can switch to 10 Gbps with little effort. But that is not the

limit. 70 Gbps systems are cur-rently in use in our system and we can go up from there. In reality, we can deliver whatever is need-ed. In almost all cases delivered on one single strand of glass. Is this expensive? That depends. Compared to a dial up modem connection, YES. Compared to a traditional T1

connection from the phone com-pany, NO. Not only NO but HECK NO. 50 Mbps is more than 32 times faster than a T1. And we can fre-quently deliver that speed for a quarter or half the cost of a tradi-tional T1 connection. That means a 64 to 128 times more value for your dollar. If this was gasoline, a T1 would be a gallon of gas for $3.00. Our connection would be 100 gallons of gas for that same $3.00What are the install fees?Depending on what you need and your distance from our ex-

isting cables, installation runs between $1000 - $3000 in most cases. There are discounts avail-able for long time customers of Wireless Beehive. Is it available everywhere?Everywhere we have a cable. We are continually growing the tendrils of the system. We have wide coverage in Lake Point, Erda, and throughout the Tooele main street area. We go through Grantsville; we serve the Miller Motorsports area and are build-ing more each day. For residen-tial customers, we generally re-quire a pocket of 6 customers all within ¼ mile of each other be-fore we will extend the main line. Our system extends to downtown Salt Lake City with many business customers there as well. For companies needing interconnec-tion between their site in Tooele Valley to other sites in Utah and Idaho we partner with a regional company that can generally reach those areas we cannot. So the general answer is a qualified yes, it is available everywhere. Beehive Broadband is proud to offer the Tooele Valley the best services available. Residences in this area have more and bet-ter communication options than most other Utah communities, including Salt Lake City.

Local Dairy wins National AwardTooele County Chamber of Commerce November 201011

Shepherds Dairy Products, located in Erda, took a 1st Place at the National American Cheese Society competition on August 28, 2010 in Seattle Washington. The competition was fierce with over 1450 entries from Canada, Mexico and the United States. Shepherds Dairy Products was awarded first place in the Cheese Spreads Open Category for their goats milk cheese. The American Cheese Society is an active, not for profit trade organization that encourages the understanding, appreciation, and promotion of farmstead and natural specialty cheeses produced in the Americas and Canada. By providing an educational forum for cheesemakers and cheese

enthusiasts, the Society fills an important gap in today’s specialty food world. Unlike other cheese competitions, where cheeses are graded down for technical defects, the American Cheese Society’s goal is to give positive recognition to those cheeses that are of the highest quality in their aesthetic evaluation (i.e. flavor, aroma, and texture), as well as their technical evaluation. As a result, the highest quality cheeses are those that the Society feels deserve the recognition of an American Cheese Society award, based on a minimum number of points awarded (totaling 100 points possible) for First, Second, or Third Place.

Congratulations to Vaughn Oborn for this recognition. Shepherds Dairy Products cheese is sold at Macey’s here in Tooele and is also served at Sostanza.

The Tooele Applied Technology College has a new program offered in partnership with Tooele County School District. For the first time, adults and high school students have a professional, state licensed Cosmetology/Barbering school available at the School District’s new Community Learning Center at 211 South Tooele Boule-vard in Tooele. The program covers hair styling, which includes shampoos, cuts, colors and perms, in addition to salon management, scalp health

and diseases, proper tool sanita-tion and skin and nail care. Stu-dents learn to give manicures and pedicures, apply artificial nails and identify problems with nail health. Students are closely supervised by instructor Lyle Ferguson. Lyle has over 20 years of industry ex-perience and 21 years of teaching experience. Lyle also holds a Utah Cosmetology/Barber Instructor

Cosmetology/Barbering Program at the TATC

License and a Utah State Office of Education’s Professional Educa-tion License. Bonnie Perkins of La Chic Image Salon in Tooele is job shadowing Lyle while she obtains her instructor’s license, and plans to employ students in her salon after graduation. Students are en-joying the state-of-the-art facility at the Community Learning Cen-ter, and speak very highly of Mr. Ferguson and his techniques. As most students plan to have their own salon some day, they all agreed it is important to have hands-on experience in every as-pect of salon management. A visitor to the class can typically see someone having their hair cut or colored, men and women having their hair styled, students practic-ing on mannequins and someone else having their nails done; all while the instructor moves from station to station, checking on each student’s work. If you’re interested in becoming a state licensed Cosmetologist/Barber, or would like to experi-ence salon services for yourself or family, please contact the TATC at 435-248-1800 for more information.

Fret-less Violin

Tooele County Chamber of Commerce November 201014

Hi! Allison Vokac here, owner of Fret-less Violin… I know learning how to play the violin can be challenging, especially for younger children. Since I started violin lessons at age seven, I com-pletely understand the patience and discipline it takes to become a suc-cessful violinist. It is critical that a good foundation is put in place for beginning students. This enables them to develop good habits, and be successful with each phase of playing the violin. I have played in many orchestras, one of which was the Civic Orches-

tra, the Youth Orchestra of the Chicago Symphony. I have learned those skills and what it takes to play in an orchestra. I have a twenty year background from which to address specific needs of each student, and I incorporate all of my ex-periences as a traditional violin coach…which results in the student being suc-cessful and playing the violin without struggling. Fret-less Violin offers private coaching for beginners and intermediates. Call for your complimentary session today.Allison Vokac 435-249-0041

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has recently launched an exciting new web-site to help employers find qual-ity candidates and job seekers find employment opportunities. The new LDSjobs.org is not only a global search engine but a place for candidates to post profiles for potential employers. Many companies are no longer posting positions but shopping in the database and directly con-tacting candidates. Employers can now search for candidates without officially posting a job. Finding good employees who will make a positive contribu-tion to your operation is a dif-ficult challenge. LDS Employ-ment Resource Services (ERS) can help reduce your hiring risks by connecting you with a workforce of people who have been taught the principles of re-liability, responsibility, and con-tinued improvement. The benefits to employers of registering on LDSjobs.org are Access Talent — Create a

profile to begin accessing ERS’ worldwide database of candi-dates. Advance Your Opportunities — Communicate your employ-ment opportunities. Achieve Your Goals — Reduce the time and cost of hiring good employees. The site is open to the commu-nity and members of all faiths. The service is cost free to both job seekers as well as employers. We invite you to learn more about this business resource by attending a presentation put on by a Professional Staff Mem-ber of the ERS team. The pre-sentation will be sponsored by the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce and will be held on Tuesday, November 9th from 8:00 am to 9:00 am. The meet-ing will be held at the Tooele County Emergency Manage-ment Building located at 15 East 100 South, Tooele. There is no charge for this event and is open for all Chamber members and prospective members.

On September 25th, the Tooele County Board of Realtors selected Berna Sloan of Group 1 Real Estate as their 2010 “Realtor of the Year” at their annual Installation and Awards Banquet held at the Deseret Peak Convention Center. Selection crite-ria for this award is a combination of sales production and Community, Board and Industry volunteer service over the course of the year. In addi-tion, Berna received awards for “Elite Top Producer”, “Sterling Honor Soci-ety” for service, as well as Education awards for being in the top five per-cent of the TCBR for continuing edu-cation hours. Berna has been a Realtor since 1992, specializing in Tooele County real estate. She served as President of the Tooele County Board of Realtors in 2002, and has served on their Board of Directors and several committees for many years. She has also served as a Director for the Utah Association of Realtors, as well as being Vice-Chair of the State Grievance/Professional Standards Committee, and is a gradu-ate of the UAR Leadership program. She is currently serving as 2nd Vice-

Chair of the Tooele County Cham-ber of Commerce, where she has also served on the Board of Directors. She also serves as the Chair of the Cham-ber Easter Egg Hunt, a role she’s filled for the last 3 years. Berna is married to Chris Sloan, and is the mother of six children and has four grandchildren. Of her long involvement in volunteer service, Berna says “It was something I always enjoyed. Being a Realtor is re-ally all about service. Tooele County has been good to me and my family, and it’s a way to give back to a com-munity and a profession that’s been so good to me. I’ve made so many friends through involvement with the Board and the Chamber, I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon”!

After a ten year absence as a chamber member, success-ful Massage Therapist Mary Brasby, with 16 years expe-rience, returns to the Tooele County Chamber of Com-merce. She brings with her many additional skills and services to benefit Tooele residents, local businesses (with her on-site chair massage) and those visiting or working with this county. In addition to massage, the services I her practice include: Health-Scans, Contour-Body wraps, Auriculo Therapy Ear Stim, Foot Reflexology, Push Muscle-Therapy, Self-Treatments Pain Re-lief Training, Heated-Stones, Cell Phone Protection Bands, Weight-

Loss Patches, Ultimate Princess Spa Packages, “Emotion-Code” easy emotional baggage relief, a Steam-Sauna that burns 600 calo-ries (lying down) and Facial Mas-sage Treatments. I’m glad to be back. I was impressed with all the new and im-

proved activities, events and service opportunities that my printer designer friend Cari at JackRab-bit Press kept telling me about, so I’m glad that I joined again. I enjoy being able to talk about and share

my passions. I love all the things that I do to help others feel better and assist them with living a natu-rally healthier lifestyle. I know I was born to Massage, so 18 years ago I enrolled in Myotherapy Insti-tute of Utah and gained my license. It’s been the most rewarding jour-ney ever since, I can’t stop learning, growing and taking new classes. It all began when I was about nine years old. I started giving family and friends back and foot massages at home or at sleep-overs. It came natural to me, I loved it and it was fun to get paid with candy bars (oh, the good ole days when we could get away with it). Since I also helped milk our family goats as a little girl, I developed hand mus-cles that had strength and endur-ance. I didn’t realize at the time what a gift milking goats would be for me ( and for my future clients). Massage benefits almost everyone! Whether its tight shoul-ders, neck, arms headaches, ten-sion, strained muscles, back aches, restless legs, lack of circulation, in-activity, joint pain, Fibromyalgia,

Massage and much more!“You don’t have to feel bad to feel better!”

The Heart of

Caregiving

A caregiver is anyone who

Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. – The U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency (CMA) announced today that on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, they achieved the destruction of 80 percent of the U.S. chemical agent stockpile since Entry-Into-Force, when the United States ratified the Chemical Weapons Conven-tion treaty in April 1997.CMA Director Conrad Whyne said, “This is another positive step in meeting the treaty and our com-mitment to the American people to safely dispose of the stockpile of chemical weapons. It is the di-rect result of the dedicated efforts of the government and contractor

personnel at CMA who day-by-day safely store and destroy the stock-pile.” Eighty percent represents the destruction of 24,488 tons of agent and more than 2.1 million munitions. CMA reached the 50 percent milestone in December 2007, the 60 percent destruction mark in April 2009 and 75 percent destruction in July 2010. While not a treaty-mandated achievement, 80 percent demon-strates the United States continu-ing progress in fulfilling its inter-national obligations to destroy the chemical weapons stockpile. CMA is on pace to meet the 90 percent

milestone by April 2012. The U.S. Army Element Assembled Chemi-cal Weapons Alternatives (ACWA) program isresponsible for destroy-ing the remaining 10 percent.CMA’s progress is reflected in the fact that neutralization sites at Ab-erdeen, Md., and Newport, Ind., as well as the incineration site at Johnston Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, have successfully destroyed their chemical warfare materiel stock-piles and are closed. CMA’s four remaining sites at An-niston, Ala.; Pine Bluff, Ark.; Tooele, Utah and Umatilla, Ore., continue their final agent campaigns—de-stroying blister agent. Earlier this

year CMA’s Non-Stockpile Chemi-cal Materiel Project completed a mission at the Pine Bluff Explosive Destruction System site, destroy-ing more than 1,200 recovered munitions.CMA remains committed to the safe and timely destruction of the nation’s chemical agentand chemical warfare materiel, and continues to safely store chemical agent munitions atthe ACWA sites near Richmond, Ky., and at Pueblo, Colo. For more information about CMA, please visit www.cma.army.mil
