Mumbai: It was Karachi’s most high-profile wedding, but one that never made it to the newspapers or society magazines. On February 4, the second daughter of un- derworld don Dawood Ibra- him Kaskar, Mahreen, mar- ried a Pakistan-born US national, Ayub, in a hush- hush wedding, followed by a reception on February 5 at the gangster’s palatial bunga- low in the exclusive and up- scale Karachi neighborhood of Clifton, aid sources. The only thing that gave it way was the fleet of expensive cars that were lined outside the bungalow. The husband is believed to the son of promi- nent US-based Pakistani businessman. TOI has learned that the guestlist included a few Pa- kistani army officers, Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) agents, and businessmen from Dubai. The gangster’s friend and in-law Javed Mian- dad and his family members were also allegedly present for the wedding ceremony. Miandad’s son Junaid is mar- ried to Dawood’s daughter Mahrukh. Their wedding took place at the Hyatt, Du- bai, in July 2005. Mahreen’s wedding, however, was more low-key, said sources Da- wood’s brothers and his lieu- tenant Chhota Shakeel were present along with the rest of Dawood’s relatives. “The marriage was sched- uled to be held in May, but then a few months ago, Da- wood suffered from a massive heart attack. He recovered, but after that insisted that Mahreen tie the knot as soon as possible,” a well-connected gang member from Mumbai told TOI. He added that the groom, too, was keen on re- turning to the US. “Dawood does not want his son-in-law to come under the police scan- ner,” the source said. The ceremony and wed- ding reception were allegedly held indoors to avoid the pry- ing eyes of the press and the intelligence agencies. The D gang is suspected to have performed a recce and provided logistical support to the 26/11 terror attack exe- cuted by the Lashkar-e-Taiba at the instance of the ISI with which Dawood has extremely close links. According to sources, Dawood has not vis- ited Dubai for many years now, especially after the 9/11 attacks in the US. TNN 2008 Malegaon blast: Mutalik’s police custody is extended Thane: The Thane police ar- rested a conman for blackmail- ing and sexually abusing at least 50 women and one minor over the last two months by pretending to be an assistant commissioner of police with the Mahanagar Telephone Ni- gam Ltd (MTNL)—a non exist- ent post. Under the guise of a police official, Bhupendra Verma (35) allegedly called up his intended victims, and in- formed them that a male mem- ber of their family, a husband or father, had been caught in- dulging in phone sex during a telephone surveillance oper- ation. He would demand cash, gold jewellery and even sexual favours from the women prom- ising to protect the “guilty hus- bands”, said the police, who laid a trap for the conman on February 10. Thane police commission- er K P Raghuvanshi said: “Ver- ma would pick his targets ran- domly by calling them on the phone from different loca- tions. If the call was answered by a male he would hang up. If a women replied he would an- nounce that he was an ACP with MTNL and that the resi- dential phone was under sur- veillance for obscene calls.’’ Most of the women were from middleclass families. One of them, Pamela Dante (name changed) was a teacher. He told her that MTNL had recorded conversations between her husband and another woman and that he was liable to be ar- rested. He warned Dante not to call her husband as her phone was tapped. “He asked the teacher to meet him at a loca- tion with money and jewellery. He also abused her sexually,’’ said Dattatrey Karale, deputy commissioner of police (crime). Another victim paid up to protect her father. A official added: “They would agree to his demands thinking they were saving the family’s honour.” One of his victims is allegedly a 12-year- old girl who thought she was coming to the rescue of her ol- der brother. “Verma made the girl pose nude and took pic- tures of her,” the official said. The matter came to light last week, when one victim con- fronted the police. They laid a trap for Verma. While Karale was DCP in Mumbai, he had arrested Verma on a similar charge. The hospital dis- charge card incorrectly mentioned that the patient, Shewakram Dawra, had been suffering from hyper- tension for two to three years when the complainant actually contract- ed the condition two to three months ago. “There is no material on record to prove that the complainant (Dawra) was suffering from Ischemic Heart Disease, a heart ailment, before hospitalization. Barring entry in the admission note dat- ed January 9, 2006, there is no material on record to show that the he was ever suffer- ing from hypertension,” the forum held. Dawra had taken a mediclaim policy from Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Compa- ny Ltd in 2004 for an assured sum of Rs 5 lakh and renewed it for the period from May 2005-2006. The company met his first claim of Rs 50,000 in 2005. But the second time, when he was hospitalized on Janu- ary 9, 2006 for chest discomfort and breathlessness, the insurance repudiated his claim saying had that been suffering from hypertension before he signed up. The company said that the “indoor case- sheet” stated that Dawra had hyperten- sion since two-three years. Two months after his discharge, Dawra sent a letter to the company stating that he began suffer- ing from hypertension recently. He had a certificate issued by Dr J P Jadwani, a car- diologist who had been treating him. In July 2006, Dawra turned to the con- sumer forum and demanded that the com- pany pay his medical expenses of Rs 79,680. The company said the hospital’s discharge card specifically mentioned that Dawra had been suffering from hy- pertension for two to three years. It added that Jadwani had tried to shield the com- plainant. But the forum observed that hy- pertension could be attributed to several factors, particularly Ischemic Heart Dis- ease, and also related to blood pressure. The company should not have considered the entry in the admission note, said the forum. Consumer forum sides with patient: AWARDS `1.1 LAKH Rebecca Samervel TNN Illustration: Ram
