Together We Strengthen
Our Schools!
10Years of PiE!
Celebrating
2014–2015 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
To our supporters in the Palo Alto schools community,This year we hope you will join us in celebrating an important milestone: PiE is ten years old!
As we look back on our first decade, we are so proud of all that we have accomplished together. We have
raised funds to be distributed to at all eighteen Palo Alto Unified (PAUSD) school sites. And, we have
worked hard to develop a common vision of support and enrichment for all our students.
Most importantly, we have gone from raising $1.7 million in our first year to giving over $5.3 million
to Palo Alto schools this year. In fact, with your help we have raised nearly $35 million over the past
decade. And, we have done it together. In the past ten years we have tripled the number of donors, to
more than 4,500 this year.
We are incredibly proud of the impact that you, our donors, have had on our schools. With your help,
we have made dramatic increases in school staffing and the number of classes offered. Many important
teachers, counselors, and caring adults have been present in our children’s lives for the past ten years
because our community has come together through PiE.
That is why our new message is: Join us! Together we strengthen our schools. Whether you grew up in
Palo Alto or just moved in from overseas, you have an important role in helping make your student’s life
better at school. After all, our kids only grow up once. So let’s make it the best it can be.
Thank you for all that you have helped us accomplish in our first ten years for our students, and please
continue to support us in the next decade—together we can continue to strengthen our schools.
Warmly,
Asha Guha and Missy Reller P A R T N E R S I N E D U C A T I O N

PiE Supports all Elementary Schools:
Bill Gutoff“We augment the teachers’ curriculum with classes on
astronomy, geology, physics, biology, and chemistry.
Scientific thinking helps the kids learn how to gather
information to make good decisions in all aspects of life.
I love watching them get into it with hands-on projects as
they discover new things and figure it out for themselves.
Sometimes I’ll even try to trick them, so they learn to
think independently and use other information sources.
Thanks to the PiE donors for making this all possible!”

PiE Supports all Middle Schools:
Michele Chin“PiE funds enable one counselor per grade level, allowing
me to follow a class all the way through Terman. We
really get to know the students over three years and
have enough time to help them. I check in with each of
my students at least once a year and assist with grade
transition, social-emotional issues, academic issues,
organizational and time management skills, and class
selection. It’s incredibly rewarding and fulfilling to watch
the kids grow during middle school and see that our
efforts really make a difference.”

Brett Griffith“Our unique program provides the tools and support our
talented students use to create great movies. I really like
working with them; their ideas are so fresh and fun. This
year, three student films were shown at the prestigious
Cinequest film festival. Our graphic design students
use professional design tools to create works receiving
widespread recognition. PiE is instrumental in making it
all possible.”

Thank you! Together we strengthen our schools.
Every Palo Alto school—from elementary through high
school—has a team of dedicated parents who serve as its
PiE Chairs, and and who are on-site to answer questions that
arise from the community. To these and all the other amazing
PiE volunteers, we offer our sincere thanks. We could not
have done it without you this year—or any of the past ten
years! Volunteers truly are the heart of PiE.
Please join us in actively supporting PiE at your school! The
best way to begin is by contacting one of your PiE School
Chairs, or by sending an email to: [email protected].
