    NEWS

Shine airs side vs Buboy’s sis

When they were together,Shine used to confide in metheir marital woes. I remem-ber telling her once, “Itdoesn’t mean that Buboy loveshis siblings more than you. It’s just that he has loved themlonger.”

Even if Buboy is my BFF, I would like to believe that my friendship with Shine is notcoterminous with their mar-riage. We don’t get to talk anymore; still, I treasure themoments I shared with Shineduring their happy days.

For the longest time, I real-ly wished they could stillpatch things up. But it lookslike they have reached theend. Hopefully, in time, Buboy and Shine can meet halfway.

After I published the side of Buboy’s sister, Marimer “AteChed” Hamilton in this col-umn last week, Shine took toFacebook to air her senti-ments:

The FB post“Guys, the rape case is still

pending. I’m not doing this for

money because I have beenproviding well for my kidssince I got separated two years ago. Kaya ko naman (I canhandle it). Cesar, on the otherhand, only gives [money]monthly for rent and the kids’tuition. I have been really qui-et about this because I believethis should be settled incourt... They are the ones whogive interviews left and rightand [then] they blame me. Iam a mom and whatever I amdoing now is... for my chil-dren. Ched/Marimer is mad at

me. She once harassed me,[saying] that Buboy was notthe father of our youngest. I won [that] libel case. Onemore thing, she is the sister of my ex, so... her actions [don’tsurprise me]. Maybe I shouldreally consider … airing my side of the story becausethey’ve been making noise for weeks. I am a mom who willprotect and fight for my threegirls.”

Not a coupleIn my previous column, I

posed a question regardingthe closeness of Derek Ram-say and Ynna Asistio . I didnot confirm anything. Theplayful conjecture was just to

pique readers’ curiosity. Sincethe main story in that column was my Q&A with AntoinetteJadaone , the director/writerof “That Thing Called Tad-hana,” I was surprised that my short item about Derek and Ynna became the headline.

It did not sit well withDerek or with Ynna’s mom,Nadia Montenegro . To set therecord straight, Derek and Yn-na are not a couple.

    End of story.Mama Ara

Ara Mina is busy preparingfor the baptism of her first-born, Amanda Gabrielle , onMarch 17 at San RoqueChurch in Mandaluyong. The“Lush and Luxe Princess”-themed reception is set at theCorinthian Gardens Club-house.

Among the 15 pairs of god-parents are Sharon Cuneta ,Jessa Zaragoza-Avanzado ,Jan Marini , Jaycee Parkerand Ara’s sister, CristineReyes .

The rest are close friendsand relatives of Ara and herpartner, Patrick Meneses .

Baby Mandy will be wear-ing a fab Frederick Peraltacreation.

After the christening, ismarriage next on their agen-da? “I still have to propose toPat,” Ara jested. “I’m not ex-

pecting a fabulous proposalfrom him. What’s important isthat he proposes. I’m already thinking of a dream destina-tion for our honeymoon.”

Previous to this, three otherPinoy fighters fought in vari-ous places in Thailand for in-ternational titles and were alleither stopped or knocked out with Lionel Legada losing by TKO3 to Paipharob Kokietgymfor the WBO Oriental light fly-

On February 28, the cornerof promising flyweight con-tender Jether Oliva was forcedto retire their ward after fourrounds of almost one-sidedbeating he took from his biggerand stronger Mexican opponentLuis Nery.

The Filipino fighters’ stringof dismal losses started at thetail-end of January when JomarFajardo, a journeyman flyweightfell by unanimous decision toMexican former two-belt worldminimumweight titlist FranciscoRodriguez in their rematch heldin Chiapas, Mexico.

This was followed by the de-feat of Jeffrey Galero on Febru-ary 5 at the hands of Thai WBC

    world minimumweight champi-

on Wanhang Menayothin intheir title bout in NakhonSawan, Thailand where an in-ternational panel of judges hadthe Thai titlist winning virtually all the rounds.

Pinoy junior lightweight Adones Aguelo followed suit, dropping a 10th round TKO lossto undefeated Mexican AdtrianEstrella in Los Mochis on Valen-tine’s Day.

On February 18, in Tokyo,Japan, Ricardo Roa came in asa late substitute for ArgentineSergio Perales and was stoppedinside two rounds by world rat-ed Japanese Ryosuke Iwasa.

Four days later, veteranSylvester Lopez who has justmoved up to the bantamweightclass after fighting most of hiscareer at super flyweight, facedChinese super bantamweightQui Xiao Jun and was stoppedinside 6th round of a 12 roundbout for the vacant WBC super

    bantamweight title in Wenshan,

China. Before February wasthrough, Pinoy fighters wouldsee action in foreign rings andall would lose dismally. They were Allan Tanada,Powell Bala-ba,Bong Nacionales,Jimmy Pay-pa and Oliva losing in Mexico.

There’s a common thread inthis foreign ring debacles: ei-ther our Pinoy campaigners were seriously outmatched by their world rated opponents ora few of them fought in the wrong weight classes as in thecases of Tanada, Oliva and Pay-pa.

This number do not includeminor bouts in foreign ringsthat involved a few Pinoy fight-ers where they lost more thanthey won.

We admire the zeal of theGames and Amusements Board(GAB) for assering its mandatein protecting Filipino profes-sional boxers in its ongoing row

with the ABAP over the over-

seas stint of Pinoy OlympiansMark Barriga and Charly Saurez whom GAB already considers as pros for fightingin an AIBA sponsored tourna-ment where cash prizes aregiven.

However, we need to seethe same zeal from the GAB inthe matter of preventing proboxing mismatches involvingovermatched Pinoys fightingabroad and overmatched for-eign boxers contracted to fightin the local rings.

We also need to see GAB’sdecisiveness in the case of aPinoy fighter who is supposed-ly under medical suspensionfor 90 days who was able tofight in Thailand recently with-out the prior knowledge of hispromoter and manager.
