lantsang Tsino.Sa isang text message sa
INQUIRER , sinabi ni Zhang Hua,tagapagsalita ng Embahada ngTsina: “We have noticed the
withdrawal of government ves-sels by the Philippine side. Wehope this action will help easethe tensions.”
Tinukoy ni Zhang ang ten-syon sa pagitan ng Pilipinas atTsina dahil sa pag-aangkin saScarborough Shoal, na tina-
tawag ng Maynila na PanatagShoal at Bajo de Masinloc.
Sinabi ni Zhang, deputy chief din ng seksyong pampulitika ngembahada, “the Chinese sidehas been urging the Philippineside to take measures to deesca-late the situation.”

AGAMUHLACH ON BEING A FATHER, EXPLORING
THEWORLD, AND KEEPING IN TOUCH BACKHOMEHow does one reconcile showbiz schedule with family
time? Ask Aga Muhlach and he’ll admit without a moment’shesitation that, indeed, it is never easy to be in show busi-ness, especially for a father like him. Aga has recently beengoing around the world, embarking on adventure-filledsprees that take him to familiar and exotic places, as host of TV5 weekly show Pinoy Explorer.
However, his globetrotting ways are not without personalsacrifice. As much as it is fun to travel and explore differentdestinations, it is also heart-rending for the actor every timehe travels without his wife and kids.
But home is where the heart is and so, whatever part of theworld the multi-awarded actor may wind up in, he is sureto touch base with his family. “Kahit pa busy at hecticang schedule ko, I see to it that I stay connected with Atasha and Andres e very chanc e I get lalo na pag their mommy (Charlene) is taping for a show,” shares Aga.
Aga’s edutainment show has brought him to provinc-es in the Philippines, as well as to foreign soils. Buthe has modern technology and Sun Cellular tothank, for bringing him closer to home. “Duringmy time, we only had operator-assisted calls.Good thing we have mobile phones today for calls and texts!”
Furthermore, Aga is always on the loopwith goings-on in his family even during hisabsence. “Calls from my wife and the twinsgive me the assurance that they are safe andsecure. I’m happy, too, that we use Sun Cellular not just for local calls but more importantly for overseas calls when I’m abroad. Ang gallingnga eh kasi parang local call lang, with Sun’svery affordable IDD rates! Plus, the signal isvery clear and stable,” he notes.
Sun Todo IDD Tawag comes very handy for theTV show host as it offers affordable IDD rates to dif-ferent parts of the world including the US (Main),Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Guam, and Hawaii at only P2 per minute. Meanwhile, callsto Australia, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Macau,
Brunei, Thailand, India, and Northern Marianas are at P5 per minute. Other countries covered by the Sun Todo IDD Tawaginclude Japan, Italy, Bahrain, and Kuwait at P8 per minute, and Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK, Indonesia, Spain, and France atonly P10 per minute. Plus, with Sun’s strong partnership withPLDT-Smart network, subscribers are sure to enjoy stronger signal and wider network coverage in the Philippines.
Fatherhood has indeed given the former matinee idolmuch fulfillment. “Like any parent, Charlene and I want our kids to be better individuals when they grow up, so we teachthem good values while they are young.” Aga also proudlyshares that his twins are very self-reliant and responsible as
early as now. Aga’s devotion to his children and family hasn’tgone unnoticed. Last year, he was named as one
of the Ulirang Ama awardees by the NationalMother’s Day and Father’s Day Foundation,Inc., an award-giving body that recognizes
model parents who exemplify integrityand high moral principles in raising
and nurturing their children. For allthe awards and titles that he’s beengiven, none is as fulfilling and bearsso much personal impact as that of
being a father. “It is something thatI work hard on because I want to bea good parent to my kids.”

Tom Cruise singingStacey Jaxx or not isirrelevant, because we
see him truly ASStacee Jaxx.
The one scene where the film actual-ly attempts to be dar-ing is when music
journalist Constance(Malin Akerman) in-terviews Jaxx in I Want to Know What
Love Is. After thatscene, I kept wonder-ing why the film lost
the hyper-camp,tongue-in-cheek, row-dy comedy of thestage original, consid-ering that the film di-rector is the stage ver-sion’s choreographer,
who was also respon-sible for the Hairspray movie. There’s anoth-er scene worth noting, involving Alec Bald-
win and Russell Brand(Lonny) but shouldremain a surprise.
The rest of the filmis a teen TV show pre-tending to be a rock
jukebox musical that’sabout as rock-rebel-
lious as alcohol-lacedfruit punch at Prom. There’s a reason the
stage musical had thesong We Built This City and that was becausethe strip was beingphysically demolished. In the movie, the songis an excuse so ’80spersonalities such asDebbie Gibson and Se-bastian Bach cancameo in the crowd.
While I never sawthe Broadway version,
I just recently saw theManila staging whichopened last Friday (which shall be thesubject of my next re-
view). It should not beunfair to compare thefilm with the stage
version, just as theManila staging is opengame for those whosaw the Broadway mount. This much Ican declare, as fair as Ican say it: the movie isnothing like the stagemusical. Not at all.The music may soundfamiliar, but the verveisn’t just the same.
Review by Vives Anunciacion
Rock of Ages Directed by Adam Shankman Based on the multi ple Tony Award -nomi nated Broadway musical
IWANTED to like this, but it’s Glee
with glam rock thrown in. Rock of Ages the movie is a collection of
music videos of karaoke-covered rock anthems vigorously mixed in a Rain-
bow Brite bag. If you like Glee, you’lllike this movie. I never liked Glee, nev-er ever. Nor did I like Rainbow Brite.
Based on the hitBroadway musical of the same name, the
jukebox musical isabout love and artisticstruggle in the sunset
years of Glam Rock.Just think: Bon Jovi,Journey, Twisted Sister,
Poison, Pat Benatar,Extreme, Steve Perry,Starship, and Def Lep-pard, among others.
Small-town girlSherrie (JulianneHough) and city boy Drew (Diego Boneta)fall in love on SunsetStrip as they struggleto reach their Holly-
wood dreams. Drewhelps Sherrie get a jobas a waitress in the
Bourbon Room—arun-down joint that
was in its heyday thecenter of Rock & Rolluntil pop music camealong. Careers and re-lationships collide
while the mayor(Bryan Cranston) andhis conservative wifePatricia (Catherine Ze-ta-Jones) connive torid the city of its “sins.”
Alec Baldwin playsthe owner of BourbonRoom Dennis Dupree,
who makes a last-ditch attempt to re-
vive the bar by invit-ing rock god StaceeJaxx (Tom Cruise) toperform. Jaxx is theliteral, and Cruise isthe figurative, super-star of the show, as if the Mission Impossible
star was born to act
the self-absorbed,strange Stacee Jaxx.
The film is hyper-edited to the point thatmany performances by the actors are cut off
just to showcasechoreography. The sto-ry is paper-thin as it is
with the original, butof course the originalbenefits from live per-formances. The setsmay look big andthere may be lots of extras and dancers, but the on-screen busi-ness is all pretend, justlike a TV show shot ina studio.
The film wouldhave benefited a lotfrom more engaging
and better performingleads. Case in point isthe only exception tothe karaoke proceed-ings: Stacee Jaxx.Whether it was truly
