To Our Karate Friends,
In remembrance of Criccy, we would be delighted if you could join us to
celebrate Criccy at the first Christopher Nugent Memorial Karate Competition to
be held in Tallaght Leisure Centre, Fortunestown Way, Tallaght, Dublin on
Saturday 2 November.
Categories for Under 21yrs in both kata and kumite disciplines are available for
your members to participate. Please log on to sportdata and register your
entries.
For those of you who did not know Criccy, please find attached a letter from Mr
Peter Coyle, who knew Criccy well during his karate career and a copy of the
newspaper article written by him at the time of Criccy’s death.
It is hoped that this tournament will be an opportunity for all of us in Ireland to
get back to enjoying karate, to benefit from our friendships, knowledge and
skills and to instil in the next generation the martial art attributes of respect,
honour, discipline, courage and passion - (attributes that Criccy had in
abundance).
We are delighted that Ireland’s newest and brightest talents Sean and Chris
McCarthy along with their coach Stephen O’Callaghan will be in attendance at
this event do a Q&A session so budding champions can find out what is
required to be the best. They may even pose for a photo!
We look forward to seeing you there.

On Saturday the 2nd of November 2019, the Christopher (Criccy) Nugent Memorial Karate Competition will
be held for the first time in the Tallaght Leisure Centre, Dublin, to commemorate the life of Criccy, who was
a prominent member of the ONAKAI National Kumite Squad until his untimely death at the age of 19 in
2004. Together with his brother Stephen, Criccy was a student of Oliver Carolan and trained with him at the
Seneschalstown Karate Club for many years. He was a much loved and respected ONAKAI squad member
who lived life to the full and who enriched the lives of all who befriended him.
In a single-car accident on the 29th of July 2004, Criccy suffered injuries which would later claim his life on
the 5th of august 2004, 3 days after his 19th birthday. Before Criccy’s passing, his distraught parents, Pas-
chal and Geraldine very bravely consented to multiple organ donations being given to others, as they felt
Criccy would have wished this, so that his passing would prolong the lives of some who were in critical need
at the time.
Previously, remembrance of Criccy had been maintained by the ONAKAI membership through the annual
presentation by Criccy’s parents of The Christopher Nugent Perpetual Trophy at the ONAKAI National Sen-
ior Championships, when, by the consensus of all the senior officials present at the event, the trophy was
presented to whoever they considered to have been the ‘most spirited Kumite performer’ of the day (not
necessarily the event winner), as this had always been Criccy’s ‘hallmark’. Win or lose, Criccy would always
give a memorable performance.
Two ambitions which were long held by Criccy, but which were unfortunately never realised, were to par-
ticipate and succeed in the Olympics and to win a medal in the WKF Championships.
To pay respect to Criccy’s unfulfilled ambitions, and to honour his memory, two young Irishmen who have
fulfilled his ambitions (and theirs), the McCarthy twins, Sean and Chris, from the Cloghroe club in Cork and
their instructor Stephen O’Callaghan, who is Ireland’s most successful coach ever, will be in attendance as
special guests at the event. Chris won gold in the EKF Junior European Championships in Denmark in Febru-
ary 2019 and Sean won bronze in the Youth Olympics in Rio de Janiero in 2018.
Looking forward to seeing you and your competitors at the event in November.
