Page 2: To Love and To Serve

Welcome to The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd! Whether you are longtime member, a newcomer or newly reacquainted, we hope this listing of groups, guilds and activities is helpful to you. The title of this publication is drawn from the post

communion prayer found in the Book of Common Prayer. After receiving communion, members of the congregation rise and pray, saying, “...Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart...” Among these pages you will find a variety of ways “to love and serve” and a community that welcomes and invites you to join them. If you need guidance in discerning which opportunities are right for you please feel free to contact the point person listed for each group, or any member of the clergy or staff.

However, this publication is more than just a listing of ways to get active at Good Shepherd. It is also an extraordinary witness to the “strength and courage” and the “gladness and singleness of heart” that members of the Good Shepherd community demonstrate through their love and service to God, one another and the wider community. Members of all ages and stages of life offer grassroots leadership across the breadth of our common life. We are a community that believes that we are called to love and to serve and it is our hope that within these pages, you too will find an opportunity for ministry that calls you to join.

God’s Peace,

Kathy PfisterAssociate Rector for Program

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the

Sacrament of his Body and Blood.Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and

courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart;through Christ our Lord Amen. - BCP 365

In 2003, the GS Vestry completed a Master Plan for our campus, which sought to meet current and future needs of both Good Shepherd and the greater Austin community. The first phase, included the purchase and closing of Moffett Street, the provision of on-campus parking, the completion of the Administration Building, the move of GSES into Baxter Hall, the betterment of GSES traffic, and the repair and improvement of underground infrastructure was completed in 2010. For more than two years the Vestry has been at work reviewing the Master Plan and evaluating new needs of our campus. With a growing parish and a commitment to service, the following parishioners comprise the building program task forces and are the leaders of this ambitious vision that includes updating and expanding our primary worship space, replacing the Education Building which also serves as parish educational and fellowship spaces, building an underground parking garage, improving our grounds, and resolving our drainage issues. We are grateful for the work and ministry of these Task Forces as they work within their committee as well as with consultants, the Vestry, the School Board, and expertise within the church and school to do the following:

The Building Task Force: Review plans, select contractor, and offer support during construction.

The Capital Campaign Task Force: Coordinate financial support of the building program.

The GSES Task Force: Oversee school-related layouts and planning for temporary relocation of programs.

The OutreachTask Force: Identify the beneficiary of the project’s tithe and oversee the program’s development.

The Worship Task Force: Determine necessary improvements to the Sanctuary, Nave, Narthex, and organ.

*elected position, not subject to the 3 year term.

Foyer GroupsEnjoy meeting new people over a wonderful home cooked meal or at a great new restaurant in Austin? Foyer Groups are comprised of 8 - 12 parishioners that meet monthly to share meals and fellowship. Foyer Groups provide a monthly opportunity to forge new friendships, to become better acquainted, and to strengthen the bonds of our church community. New groups are formed each year following a sign up beginning in January and a great Kick –Off Dinner in the Parish Hall. The host/hostess rotates monthly and the date and the group chooses the date and time of each gathering. This is a fun and laid-back way to get involved in parish life and make some new and wonderful friends.

Good Old BoysThe Good Old Boys offer fellowship and parish-wide cooking opportunities. The GOB’s grill meats and prepare food for planned church activities including the annual picnic, Hands Across Exposition, and chili dinners. We also maintain the church’s outdoor cooker, horseshoe/washer pits, and the “meditation” garden surrounding the cooker on the NW corner of the church property. Join us if you have an interest in cooking (you don’t need to be good, just interested) and fellowship around church meals. There are no limits on the size of this group. We welcome all Good Old Boys; age is only a state of mind! We recognize that you can be 20 something and still be a GOB.

“We are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people….” (from Eucharistic Prayer I, Book of Common Prayer, 339

Women of Good ShepherdThe Women of Good Shepherd will host two events this year: the Annual Christmas Tea and a Women’s Retreat in the spring. These events provide the opportunity for all women of the parish, of all ages, to come together and reflect on living the life to which Christ has called us. While the tea is a time of great fellowship and fun, the retreat allows women to deepen their faith and connection with one another and with God through worship, education, evangelism and pastoral care. We welcome all who are interested in helping to organize and shape these events.

St. Anne’s GuildSt. Anne’s Guild gathers on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 10:30a in the Choir Room for friendship and fellowship and to receive stories from parishioners or staff guest speakers. Come as you are and come when you can! All are always welcome to join and no RSVP is ever required!

Sunday Breakfast TeamLooking to impress someone besides the kiddos with your bacon frying skills? We’d love to have you cook with us! Sunday Morning Breakfast Teams provides breakfast on Sunday for the congregation, meeting on Sunday morning at 8:00a in the Parish Hall kitchen. 8 to 10 groups rotate cooking breakfast between August and May. Each group of 5 - 7 members cooks approximately 4 Sundays per year.

Parishioners Without Childrenat Home (PWOCAH)PWOCAHs are parishioners without children at home interested in getting involved in Children & Family Ministry. They help to develop intergenerational relationships within the parish and strengthen parish-wide community. PWOCAHs participate on many levels from helping in Preschool Sunday School, to Shepherd and Jam Camp and all the special events in between. You’re invited to help out in the area of family ministry that you’re most interested in!

Sunday Mornings andSeasonal OfferingsThroughout the program year two adult education classes are offered most Sunday Mornings: the Sunday Forum and a second class that varies from season to season. Approximately once a month adults and children participate together in an intergenerational program such as Day of the Dead and Advent Wreath Making.

Adult Christian EducationGood Shepherd offers Christian education programs and classes for adults on Sundays and throughout the week. These formation opportunities engage the intellect, open the heart and deepen faith. They include Sunday morning forums, newcomers’ classes, and adult confirmation; weekday

gatherings and Bible studies; commitment groups that meet regularly for more in depth study; and seasonal series that are centered in small groups. Christian formation at Good Shepherd holistically fosters and nourishes the spiritual life of adult parishioners.

Sunday Morning ForumFollowing breakfast, adults gather for a presentation led by members of the clergy and staff, guest speakers and parishioners. All are welcome to attend and no registration is required. This fall, The Rev. Mike Russell will lead 8 part series on church history and the reformation. Sunday Forum meets from 10:40a - 11:20a in the parish hall.

ADI: Acclimate * Dedicate * IntegrateADI is a series of three courses designed to help interested adults become familiar with Good Shepherd, the Episcopal tradition and the practices and beliefs that undergird the Christian life. It is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to examine their faith more closely and renew their connection and commitment to the church community. This series also serves as Confirmation Classes if you are interested in becoming confirmed at GS. ADI meets on Sundays from 10:40a - 11:20a in the family room.

• DedicateGoing deeper in our commitment to the Christian life requires dedication: clarifying what we believe, exploring the tough questions and all the while leaving room for God’s mystery. Dedicate is a six week class crafted to guide participants toward confirmation or adult baptism. It is also an excellent refresher for those wishing to renew their commitment to Christ and to examine their life in light of the Gospel. Confirmation will take place twice over the program year, December 23rd and March 3rd.

November 4, 11, 18 (not 25th) and December 2, 9, 16Led by: The Rev. Kathy Pfister

• IntegrateTo integrate is to bring together many parts into a cohesive whole. As members of Christ’s Body we are united one to another in a community that brings life to us and to the world. In this three week series we will examine the gifts and obligations of membership and make a plan for how we will incorporate the practices of faith into our daily lives.

• AcclimateAcclimate is a five week series designed to support you in this process, answering your questions, connecting you with other parishioners and introducing you to the Christian way of life as it is expressed in the community of Good Shepherd. The class will include a tour of the campus, a demystification of worship customs, and the basic tenets of Christianity as it is lived out in the Anglican tradition.

Weekday OfferingsEach week many groups gather for learning, fellowship and the development of their faith. All of the weekday offerings are open to new members at anytime during the program year.

Men’s Bible and BrewCome when you can and BYOB: Bring your own Bible, Bring your own Brew! Men’s Bible and Brew is a multigenerational group of different intellectual friends who also happen to study the Bible. We meet on Monday evenings 6:30p - 8:00p in the Choir Room for refreshments, fellowship and Bible study. We currently have about 35 men with 10 - 12 men attending each week, but we’re always interested in having more join the group.

Contact: Edward Bellingrath at [email protected]

Men’s Breakfast and BibleJoin other men in the parish on Wednesday mornings at 7:00a in the parish hall for breakfast, fellowship and a lively discussion of the readings for the upcoming Sunday. The 4th Wednesday of the month includes Holy Eucharist. We sit down for a delicious breakfast at 7:00a and begin our discussion of the readings at 7:30a. All men are invited to come when you can; we can never have too many!

Contact: Earl Nesbitt at [email protected] William Cromwell at [email protected]

Glory into Glory Lenten ProgramDuring the Sundays of Lent, Sunday Forums are suspended and replaced by a special community wide Christian Formation opportunity. Led by the Rector, the Rev Morgan Allen, participants engage in a deliberate study of a faith-relevant topic. Lecture and discussion are offered each Sunday (and a video taped for on-line viewing for those who are unable to attend). Large group presentations are then followed up with a small group component known as Glory Groups. Parishioners join one of many groups offered throughout the week to discuss the presentations, enjoy fellowship and explore their faith.

Thursday Morning Forum and Bible StudyWould you like to meet more GS folks and have the same opportunity to explore your faith at the same time? Thursday Morning Forum gathers weekly at 10:00a in the Administration Building in order to deepen faith and a sense of community, while studying the Bible and sharing in conversation. Come when you can! The forum is open to both men and women and there is always room for more to join in.

Contemplative Prayer GroupIf you hunger for silence and strive to hear God’s “still, small voice,” this group is for you. Contemplative prayer (oftentimes referred to as centering prayer or Christian meditation) is a form of wordless prayer that aims to open us to the Divine presence within. The group meets on Wednesdays at 12:15p and Thursdays at 5:30p in the church nave, and the 3rd Thursday of the month is a Contemplative Eucharist at 5:30p. Contemplative prayer provides a wonderful break from the hustle and bustle of the week and allows an opportunity to sit still, reflect and feel God’s presence all around.

Contact: Ann Riopel at [email protected]

Moms’ Bible StudyThis group of women meets on Thursdays at 9:15a in the Choir Room to learn more about God’s Word and to support and listen to one another during the trials and joys of rearing children. Each “semester” group members choose a new study. The coffee is always hot, the conversation is always warm, and more importantly the nursery is always available! We hope you will join us.

Women on the JourneyWomen on the Journey are weekly small groups that meet for a time of spiritual connection, mutual support, study and prayer. Using Holy Scripture as a guide, participants reflect upon the inward and outward journey that each of us is called to in the life of the Spirit. At each meeting there is a time of prayer, a time to share something of our everyday lives, and a time of learning. In this way, members can find not only meaning and guidance for their own journey, but become companions to one another on the journey of faith to which Christ beckons. Groups are co-led by members of the clergy and laity, limited in size to about 10 participants per group and typically formed in the fall and spring depending upon interest.

Contact: Kathy Hatfield Denum at [email protected] Rev. Kathy Pfister at [email protected]

Commitment GroupsCommitment groups require participants to attend regularly, to keep confidentiality and are often limited in size. Groups generally open to new members at the beginning of each semester. If one of the following commitment groups sounds interesting to you, please contact the designated point person for more information and availability on joining.

The Art of Engaging Holy Scripture (TAEHS)TAEHS nourishes adult faith formation by seeking to hear the message God has for each of us in His Word through the practice of reading Holy Scripture with a Lectio Divina approach and group sharing. Our group of 6 - 12 members meets on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30p - 3:30p in the Conference Room, and commit to attend regularly and participate actively.

Education for Ministry (EFM)EFM is a weekly small group course of study, prayer and reflection following a curriculum developed by the University of the South: Sewanee. It is based on the premise that every baptized person is called to ministry. This course prepares students to minister more effectively by helping students recognize connections between their life experiences and the Christian tradition. The group meets on Thursdays from 6:15p - 9:00p in the Conference Room. EFM is open to people of all denominations and traditions. Tuition includes all study materials and is $350.00 per year and scholarships are available. EFM is a 4 year course which meets 9 months out of the year. Commitment is one year at a time and the group is limited to 6-12 participants. Curriculum must be taken consecutively: Year One - Old Testament; Year Two - New Testament; Year Three - History of the Christian Church; Year Four - Theological Choices. Participants take turns providing light meals for the group.

Shepherd GroupsShepherd groups provide parishioners with eclectic and diverse short-term small groups experiences. Designed to be led primarily by parishioners, Shepherd Group topics are determined by the interest of the leader and vary from season to season. Groups are typically made up of 6 - 12 participants and can last anywhere between 3 and 6 weeks. If you are interested in leading a Shepherd Group, all you need is a passion for your subject matter and a willingness to serve. Training in the basics of small group dynamics and session planning is provided. Interested?

Spark Sunday School SPARK Sunday school seeks to educate children in 1st through 5th grade about God through teacher-led activities. Spark lessons bring to life 150 stories from the Old and New Testament through games, art, music, and science, to accommodate all the different ways kids learn. Classes are taught by members of the parish on a rotating schedule. SPARK students will meet in classrooms in the Parish Hall and Baxter Hall following breakfast in the Parish Hall. Participating children are required to be registered by a parent.

K5 - Kinder Sunday School The K5 - Kinder Sunday school class seeks to educate children who are in kindergarten or five years-old about God through teacher-led activities. The curriculum for K5 - Kinder will reinforce the most important stories of The Gospel. The K5-Kinder students will begin in the 9:00a family service and follow the Elementary school children out of “Big Church.” The K5 - Kinder class will then follow out of children’s chapel and go to their own classroom for Sunday school. Parents are expected to volunteer two Sundays a semester for each child as teaching assistants. Parents are encouraged to bring children at least twice a month to maintain classroom consistency.

Club 2345This ministry is offered to children ages 2-5 following their Sunday school class. It is run by the nursery staff and gives children a safe place to play while their parents attend adult education opportunities. Play is not restricted to the nursery building as depending on the number of staff present and ratios with the children, older children can be supervised on the playground. The nursery is open from 8:30a - 12:30p each Sunday and during other parish events as published.

Episcopal Family Groups (EFGs)EFGs gather in groups of approximately 4 families who meet 2 times for a meal and for Bible study. They explore 2 Bible stories and develop a way to present the stories on 2 consecutive Sundays as part of our 9:00a family worship service. Activities relating to the stories are also developed and offered in Children’s Chapel.

The EDGEWe hope your fourth and fifth graders will join us for a fun monthly gathering of service and fellowship. The goal of this tween group is to provide a safe place for tweens to go in order to grow in their faith and build healthy relationships with their peers. Along with the youth, there will be at least 4 adult advisors who will help with supervision and serve as role models for the youth. Registration is required as some of the events will be off-site and permission slips are required.

The Primary Choir sings occasionally at the 9:00a Sunday Eucharist and on Christmas Eve, Palm Sunday and Easter Day. Regular attendance at weekly rehearsals is important for the musical development of both the individual child and choir as a whole as well as for preparation to sing in the liturgy. All children are invited to participate: the more the merrier! Time and date of rehearsal to be determined.

Family Outreach Ministry (FOM)FOM ministers to the greater Austin community as a parish family. We look for opportunities to serve in Austin while teaching our children about the importance of Christian service and the needs of others. Our service events are developed to include children as young as age 4 to participate. Some events are small, intended for 3-4 families, while others are very large, encouraging our entire parish to participate. Service activities vary throughout the year with an average of 3 activities per month. Some organizations where we serve include: Ronald McDonald House, Micah 6 Pantry, North Loop Apartments, El Buen Samaritano Mission, Austin Nature & Science Center, and St. James Episcopal School. We also have social gatherings for our families on a semi-annual basis. Each family helps to lead at least one service event per year and participates in as many service events as possible. There is no maximum for this group - we welcome all members of the parish. We have a brand new leadership team of 6 families. 3 will end their term at the end of 2012: Svahn, Mucci, and Hassibi. The Richardson, Roossien, and Bencken families will continue through 2013, with 3 families rolling off each year and 3 new families joining each year (similar to the vestry process). We hope to see you and your family in the upcoming year!

Eucharistic Visitors (EVs)Eucharistic Visitors (EVs), bring communion and pray for the homebound and hospitalized members of our Good Shepherd family. They offer a pastoral presence to those who cannot come to church or who may need some spiritual companionship. EVs visit parishioners once or twice per month, and gather as a large group 2-3 times a year for continuing education and reflection upon their ministry. Eucharistic Visitors are trained in the parish and licensed by the Bishop of Texas. If you feel called to pastoral care and enjoy getting to know and spend time with those in our parish that would benefit from your ministry, we encourage you to get involved.

Love on the RunLove on the Run delivers flower arrangements from the Sunday altar each Monday to parishioners who are either in the hospital, at home with a new baby, grieving the loss of a loved one, or under long term care. The volunteers may also deliver food cooked by St. Brigid’s Guild and a prayer shawl knitted by our Prayer Shawl Ministry. We meet on Mondays at 10:30a. Deliverers are placed on a rotation schedule, serving about once a month. Two people are needed each Monday.

Flower GuildThe altar flowers have a purpose far greater than just enriching our worship together on Sunday. The following Monday morning, the Flower Guild breaks down Sunday’s altar flowers and arranges them into 5 or 6 small vase arrangements for Love on the Run to deliver to parishioners. One or two flower arrangers are needed each Monday morning and serve once every 5—6 weeks. No need to be a professional florist; all you need is an eye for what looks good in a vase! Members of the staff are available to help guide you if needed.

Guild of the Christ ChildHave time to make a delivery after you drop the kids off at school or after heading home from work? This low-commitment, help-when-you-can guild would love to have you join! Good Shepherd is blessed to have such a vibrant and joyful group of children in our parish, baptizing more children last year than any other parish in the Diocese. The goal of the Guild of the Christ Child is to foster the relationship between the youngest members of Good Shepherd, their families and the Church from the very beginning of their life in the parish. Members are asked to contact expectant mothers to touch base and offer support. After the birth of the baby, guild members deliver a gift with information about Good Shepherd and food.

We strive to be mindful of our far-reaching potential through outreach and through welcoming newcomers to our ministry. We meet on the 3rd Friday of every month in Conference Room from 10:30-11:30a. All knitters knit at their own pace and are welcome to come when they can, with no production deadlines or requirements. If you have always wanted to learn how to knit, this is the perfect opportunity! We hope you will join us.

Parish Care CommitteeThe Parish Care Committee prepares food and hosts receptions for the parish throughout the year. This mainly involves funerals, however, the committee has also hosted receptions for special events such as: ordinations, welcoming new staff members and confirmations. Each of us comes when we can, and has a food item that we generally bring to add to the table. Some of these include finger sandwiches, deviled eggs, cookies, chip and dip trays, etc. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Members gather a few weeks prior to an upcoming project, and participate in projects as their schedule allows. Currently, the committee consists of 6 women, and is open to all interested in getting involved.

Tuesday Morning Outreach (TMO)Every Tuesday morning, volunteers of our parish and those who come seeking assistance come together in prayer, listening to one another’s stories over coffee and breakfast tacos in a safe and non-judgmental atmosphere. Tuesday Morning Outreach provides free 30-day bus passes each week (which we secure at a cost of $15 each from Cap Metro) and fellowship to approximately 20 individuals referred to us from: ARCH (Front Steps); Austin Transitional Center; Austin Travis County Integral Care; Salvation Army; and Trinity Center. TMO meets every Tuesday morning from 8:15a - 9:45a in the Administration Building and our doors are open from 8:30a - 9:30a for those seeking assistance. We have approximately 50 people involved and volunteers come when they are able with typically about a dozen participating each week. Volunteer training sessions are available, and we have an information sheet that explains the three roles (greeter, check-in and person who meets with the individuals). This has been a transformative ministry for those involved and we invite you to join us and see for yourself what it is all about.
